WHAT'S THE BUZZ?: A Lady on the Edge of Ruin by Lotte R. James - REVIEW!

Regency Romance fan?  FABULOUS...because today's WHAT'S THE BUZZ title is perfectly suited to you!  We're got the latest release by author Lotte R. James COMING SOON via Harlequin Books, and it stars an interesting duo with an equally interesting storyline.  Don't believe me?  How about if I told you I didn't really like our main female lead for a good portion of the story?  Or what if I said the male lead seemed a little too perfect?  Ah, now I have your attention!  Let me burst one of your thought bubbles though, in the end...I LOVED the book, but as with most people harboring a secretive nature, it took a bit to get to know it.  Ladies and gents, prepare yourself as we dive between the epages of today's book of choice...

Release Date:  11/23/23 UK

About the book...

A passion that could destroy her reputation...
...but save her heart!

Since the traumatic events of her first Season, Lady Mary Spencer’s been wary of Society. Tired of feeling angry and bitter, at a seemingly innocuous garden party, she lets her guard down with Luca Guaro. The charming Italian rogue also abhors the ton’s dictates and becomes a much-needed light in Mary’s life. A liaison with Luca would be scandalous, so why is she so tempted to head to the brink of ruin...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lady Mary Spencer is QUITE the character.
She has a carefully crafted reputation that the ton can not ignore, wields the information (aka secrets) she gathers like so much armor against the world, and is equally adept at turning it into weapons as needed.  That's not to say she's heartless, merely that she's locked hers away under lock and key.  It's not until a good portion of the story has transpired that we discover the reason for her actions.  Grant it, there are hints along the way, but nothing, in this case, was better for enlightenment of her true character than full disclosure.  Frankly, I don't blame her for all she did, but she was missing out on all that could be as she built a fortress for herself that seemed unable to be penetrated.  I was heartbroken when it seemed all that was within reach was being pulled away again, and in utter despair when the one at the heart of the betrayal was revealed, but in awe of her family and the plan concocted on her behalf.  Ah, catch that earlier statement did you?  Seemingly....let us examine our male lead, Luca Guaro.
The title often makes the man, and yet Luca was just fine without one.
He kept fine company, provided for his mother and sister, lived a life filled with balls, excursions, and decadence...but he was what the ton would call a fancy man.  In our times, I believe an escort would be a close definition, though there were relations with some of the women, but I digress.  His latest "keeper" may have started that way, but turned into more of a deep friendship, a companionship, if you will, allowing his heart to remain free, and his desires to fall where they may.  Where did they fall?  Why, upon Lady Spencer, of course!  She's so appealing from what I wrote above, is she not?  NO, she was a beauty, yet could be ruthless, but he saw deeper, below the masks she wore, and keenly wanted to know her in her heart of hearts.  Remember my mention of "too perfect"?  Yes, there's the bit that caught me unawares.  He's gorgeous, kind, willing to both take a chance and give one in return, and...really the only flaw I could find was he seemed to give up on Mary a might too easily when his inner dialogue seemed to know better, though that was a situation that was remedied in full color splendor.
By book's end, I was in Mary's corner fully with fingers crossed and baited breath that all would turn out as hoped.  It was definitely a till the last page type of ending, but it was so much better for it. We come to know her fully, the same can be said for Luca, and the more that comes to light, the more a union between the two can easily be seen as the best finale for the tale (but I won't confirm anything, you have to read it!). Though a standalone title, I also enjoyed the mentions and meetings of the other novels that came before it; it was like meeting old friends, and walking memory lane hand in hand.  One small stutter for me, the use of italics and ellipsis, or rather their over use.  I'm not an editor, and it could purely be author's choice here, but they definitely seemed to be favorited to a degree...a touch Shatner-like...and while it niggled my brain, it didn't ruin the story.
Silver Dagger Book Tours presents... THE HONOR OF AN HEIR by Linda Rae Sande - EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're taking part in a Silver Dagger Book Tours promotion featuring the seventh release in The Heirs of Aristocracy series.  Now, I, for one, LOVE a great Historical Romance and from the sound of things, this should be on my radar for a future read...but let's see what YOU think!  Ready or not, here comes today's title in the book spotlight...
The Honor of an Heir
The Heirs of Aristocracy Book 7
by Linda Rae Sande
Genre: Historical Regency Romance
They swore never to marry. But will the right suitors melt their hearts?
Fiercely independent and daughters of a wealthy countess, twins Dahlia and Diana have no desire to husband-hunt, despite their mother’s pleas. But when the ghost of their late father makes an appearance, he takes it upon himself to guide the girls into marriage – even if his presence will scare off potential suitors.
Caught cheating in one of their university courses, twin brothers Anthony and Andrew’s dreams of a Grand Tour are shattered when their father pulls the plug on their allowances. They had hoped to put marriage off as long as possible – but with their father withholding their allowances until they are wed, they have no choice but to face the daunting task of a lifelong commitment. There’s only one problem – although one of the brothers wants to marry, the other feels as if he‘s being forced to wed for money.
Brought crashing together by fate and aided by the girls’ late father, both pairs of twins must learn to see through their differences and get along. But marriage is no easy decision, and it will take more than a miracle to convince these sisters to tie the knot.
Are the twins a match made in Heaven? Or will the girls’ independence and the brothers’ lack of a fortune serve to drive them apart?
Artfully blending a beautiful 19th-century backdrop with all the classic charm of British aristocratic life, this scintillating historical romance novel by bestselling author Linda Rae Sande is a delightful read that’s perfect for anyone looking for their next emotional fix. From the threshold of the parlor in which the argument was taking place, Clarinda, Countess of Norwick, regarded her identical twin daughters with a look of resignation. She did that often given their propensity to vex her.
At least she could tell them apart—most could not. Dahlia Davida bore a slight scar on her neck from when her sister had scratched her, and Diana Dorothea, who preferred to be called Danielle because the man she knew as her father was named Daniel, tended to hold her left hand in a fist as if she needed to punch someone.
“Whatever has you two arguing now?” Clarinda asked as her own fists went to her hips. She decided she needed to appear more determined.
More battle-ready.
Girls were trouble.
Twin girls were double the trouble.
Dealing with double the trouble meant girding her loins.
Dahlia and Danielle turned to face her, immediately silenced upon seeing their mother’s stance.
“Something important, Mother,” Dahlia replied.
“Terribly important,” Danielle agreed.
Clarinda blinked. Well, they apparently agreed on something. “Out with it.”
“It’s about making love,” Dahlia stated.
“What’s involved, exactly,” Danielle added. “I’m quite sure I know, but Davy seems to think otherwise.” She directed a glare in Dahlia’s direction. “She claims she read all about it in one of Father’s books.”
“I didn’t just read about it,” Dahlia argued. “I examined all the color plates. They were quite instructive.”
Clarinda blinked. So much for battle.
Glancing toward the sideboard, Clarinda had a thought to pour herself a glass of brandy before she dared attempt to answer the girls. Instead, she motioned the twins to take seats near the fireplace and rang for tea.
Perhaps she would merely add some brandy after the maid brought the tea service.
“First, I must ask why you’re even discussing this,” Clarinda said as she moved to her favorite floral upholstered chair. “Has one of you accepted an offer of marriage without telling me?”
The twins shook their heads in unison. “If lovemaking involves bending over a library table with my naked bum pressed against some man’s bare frontside, then I shall insist Father give me my dowry so I can go on a permanent holiday to Italy,” Danielle announced. “I’ll have none of that.”
But when she stumbles upon her beloved father’s darkest secrets, the line between her two worlds quickly blurs. Now she needs the help of the one man a lady should never trust.
Devlin Byrne stands on the edge of London society, knowing he will never be accepted. No one else knows that his obscene wealth and ruthlessness aren’t without purpose. But having Ophelia is only the beginning of Devlin’s plans.
It’s undeniable that Devlin Byrne is a dangerous temptation?but just as Ophelia begins to trust him, maybe even fall for him, she discovers she’s not the only one with secrets. And his would lead her down more than just the path of scandal…
Each book in the Sinful Wallflowers series is STANDALONE:
* My Darling Duke
* Her Wicked Marquess
* A Scoundrel of Her Own
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, any time I break out the fangirl pic, you know things are about to get seriously real.

Another add to the Sinful Wallflowers series, and another FABULOUS story for Historical Romance fans to indulge in!  These ladies are far from the wallflowers that the ton has made them into, and in an effort to hedge their bets in their own directions, they've come together and made a pact, if you will, to live life on their own terms, seek our their desires, and make their own way in a world dominated by men, but held captive by the women standing subtly by.

I really enjoyed how this story began, in childhood no doubt, sharing with us just how deep their bond really was.  The innocent beginnings that turned into long held desires that seemed as if they would never see the light of another day...and yet, fate showed them just enough mercy for a reintroduction; what they did with it from there is entirely up to them.  Or was it?  It's a time when the voice of one among the ton can make or break you.  Your reputation as a lady, and your family name, are the most important things outside of lofty bank accounts, and stepping outside your class, in any sense of the word, is pretty much forbidden.  But what's a girl to do when her father, lying on his death bed, reveals a secret, startling, yes, and yet making clear things you never before understood?  What if after same said confession, a turnabout in health occurs...leaving the secret aired, and both parties with whom the knowledge lies at opposing ends of what to do next?  It's a predicament that sends Lady Ophelia into a world of shadows and darkness, as she seeks to make sense of her world torn asunder, but she's not truly alone in her endeavor...

Enter Devlin Byrne...my somewhat latest book boyfriend, and mysterious shadow to our Lady Ophelia.  With his connections, nay with his reputation alone, her safety is not in question...but what of her heart?  There's something there just beneath the surface that aches to know more.  The why, what, and who that are driving her mad with curiosity, and yet...in the telling, in the revelation, in the removal of masks painstakingly set in place, her world is about to shatter all over again.  She'll gain knowledge of things she never knew she wanted to know.  She'll grow to understand things between men and women that she and her friends could only speculate about.  She'll discover things about herself, society, and those she holds dear that will shock, awe, and inspire, but ultimately, when all is said and done, Lady Ophelia will understand that life is only well lived if one embraces it with a full and open heart.

The highs and lows of love and societal demands will keep you turning pages long into the night, while the relationship between our leads will have you on high alert.  You'll hope against hope that all turns out well, both in Lady Ophelia's quest, and Devlin's endeavors...and while it may not all be a smooth road to happily-ever-after, those bumps along the way create pure magic.  A high recommendation for ADULT Historical Romance fans...sorry younger readers, but there's definitely adult content and conversation best kept for older ears/eyes.  Even I never knew there were so many names for certain things between men and women...some most comical too!

RRR presents... A GENTLEMAN'S PROMISE by Penny Hampson - REVIEW!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we’re joining Rachel’s Random Resources for a stop along their current tour featuring the work of author Penny Hampson. We’re setting our sights on the first in her Regency Romance series and let me tell you...it’s SO GOOD! Ready or not, it’s time to dive between the pages of today’s blog tour guest and ebook of choice…

A Gentleman’s Promise
by
Penny Hampson

About the book...
A docile wife is what he wants. A husband is the last thing she needs. Can a quest for a killer teach them that they are both wrong?

Emma Smythe and her brother arrive at Easterby Hall to discover that a handsome stranger has laid claim to their ancestral home and the family title. Have her relatives been murdered, and is her brother next? Determined to find the answers, she has no option but to trust the gentleman who insists that he will help. But danger appears in many guises, and for a woman intent on remaining single, her intriguing protector may prove the biggest threat of all.

The attempts on Richard Lacey’s life begin when he inherits a title and a rundown estate. A coincidence? He’s not so sure. Problems multiply with the unexpected arrival of Jamie and Emma Smythe. Long thought dead, they too are potential targets. Richard thinks he wants a docile, obedient wife, but will the task of keeping headstrong Emma safe from danger change his mind?

Embroiled in a sinister mystery, can Richard and Emma work together to catch a killer? And will this dangerous quest teach them that what they both wish to avoid is exactly what they need?

Filled with intrigue, unexpected twists, and faultless period detail, this slow-burn romance is a must-read for lovers of classic Regency fiction.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A family name looking for an heir after two terrible tragedies. A distant relation found to claim the title. But what happens when upon his arrival to his new domain, two lost souls arrive on his doorstep...and turn out to be far more than they appear? The thought lost heir has been found, and the Viscount is only too happy to relinquish the title...but a rouse must be played or the newfound family members may not survive to stake their claim! *cue the sinister music* Oh and if THAT wasn’t enough to intrigue you, let’s throw in the fact that of the two new arrivals, the eldest lad is not actually a lad, but a lady passing as such for safety, and her outspoken mind, and beguiling ways are about to cause a bit of chaos of their own to a certain formerly titled man’s heart. Yes, my friends, there is MUCH to see here, and only so much that I shall spoil...nay TAUNT with, but what’s the harm of a little more...right?
Right from the start, I LOVED our lead characters! Richard was a head above in his way of thinking, thanks to his fabulous sister, especially in how he dealt with women. He actually LISTENED to them, worked WITH them, and could easily be persuaded (especially my a certain recent arrival) to to all sorts of things that the ton may look down on, but in reality, they had no baring on them whatsoever! His acceptance of people, of love in its many forms, and of life’s oddities was refreshing to say the least...and let’s not forget he was certainly easy on the eyes! As for our lady Emma, she too was much different than the ton might expect, but having had to survive what she and her brother did, make their way mostly on their own to new parts, find their family, establish who they were and accept whatever may come their way with little to no support….come now, lesser women would have swooned and be done with it all! No, Emma was not the swooning type, and though she had a hard time trusting her heart, she knew her mind and the way she tackled everything thrown at her from start to finish was top notch.
In the end, all’s well that ends well...and it ENDED VERY WELL! They’ll be a few surprises along the way, and I most certainly thought things may take a deadlier tone at one point or another, but I was pleased nonetheless by the direction the author decided upon. As I hear it, there are other works by this author already out in the reading wild...and I just might have to do a bit of searching of my own for my next adventure!
About the author…
Penny Hampson writes mysteries, and because she has a passion for history, you’ll find her stories also reflect that. A Gentleman’s Promise, a traditional Regency romance, was Penny’s debut novel, which was shortly followed by more in the same genre. Penny also enjoys writing contemporary mysteries with a hint of the paranormal, because where do ghosts come from but the past?
Penny lives with her family in Oxfordshire, and when she is not writing, she enjoys reading, walking, swimming, and the odd gin and tonic (not all at the same time).
Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to.. MY DARLING DUKE by Stacy Reid!
HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
So, it's the last post of 2019 (maybe...but for now, let's say yes), and while some of you may be planning for your big night out to ring in the new year, others are plotting just how to stay cozy in their pj's and well read.  I would be with the latter...once I get off work (*yay retail*)...but the well read is totally taken care of, and now yours can be too!  May I present, an end of year present of sorts from author Stacy Reid via Entangled Publishing, and today's BOOK BIRTHDAY title of choice...
The Sinful Wallflowers, Book 1
About the book...
Miss Katherine Danvers has always been a wallflower. But now with her family on the brink of financial ruin, she finds herself a desperate wallflower. To save her family, she'll do anything. Luckily, she has the perfect plan...
She’ll impress the ton by simply announcing she is engaged to the reclusive and mysterious Duke of Thornton, Alexander Masters, and secure strong matches for her sisters. No one has heard from the duke in years. Surely he’ll never find out before her sisters’ weddings and she can go back to her own quiet life.
Soon, though, everything is out of control. At first, it’s just a few new ball gowns on the duke’s accounts. Then it’s interviews with reporters eager for gossip. Before she knows it, Katherine has transformed herself into Kitty Danvers, charming and clever belle of the ton—with everyone eager to meet her thankfully absent fiancé.
But when the enigmatic Alexander Masters suddenly arrives in the city, dashing and oh so angry, he demands retribution. Except not in the way Katherine expected…
Oh my, my.
I do believe I may have to retire for the evening...
...because I TOTALLY have a touch of "Duke fever"!
This was a title I saw coming up on the Entangled Publishing roster and while I was biding my time trying to keep the schedule open (Cybils Awards reading starts in like 24 hours!), I knew I couldn't pass this one up.  Kitty and the rest of the self-dubbed Sinful Wallflowers are such a delightful bunch of smart, beautiful, and discerning women, that, thanks to the time period they live in, are starting to consider themselves past their prime...at two and twenty.  *looks aghast...does not admit own age*  They chatter and plot about how to change their lots in life, and while to some it seems merely as a potential dream, two ladies are putting actions where words only formerly existed.  Maryann has her own designs on things (which we follow along the way), but Kitty...well, she takes the cake!
Despite being a self-proclaimed wallflower, I think she really wore that moniker only because it was bestowed, as we see another side of her come out while the story progresses.  That's not to say she isn't sweet, demure, and innocent at heart, but she also has sass, brains, and good-natured cunning to spare.  All her actions were for the sake of her family...and if one looks at it from the outside, it really wasn't such a bad plan.  I mean, who would have thought the illusive Duke not seen for seven years or so would all of a sudden return to the ton?  How was she to know his reaction to her transgressions would be so...unusual.  Could she have guessed that things would work out the way they did...for all parties involved?  The answer is no to most of those questions, though she did prepare for the worst...it wasn't exactly the worst she received, and THAT made for an especially tantalizing tale indeed!
All in all, a wonderful start to a series I'm leaving room for on my future reading list.  It reminds us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that love can truly conquer all...even the most stubborn among us.  Definite recommendation for Historical Fiction fans who like smart leading ladies and open minded gents willing to see just where curious situations may lead...
Jenna has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager. A romantic herself, she has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise. She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories. She lives in Virginia with her family and a small menagerie of pets. When not reading or writing, she indulges her passion for the theatre, working with local theatres as a director. She often feels she is directing her characters on their own private stage.
She has equated her writing to an addiction to chocolate because once she starts she just can't stop.
Born in Las Vegas, NV, I joined the air force to see the world. An assignment to England kindled my love of the Regency era and prompted my dream to publish the stories in my head. I love to write with a steady supply of coffee nearby and one of my three cats on my lap. I currently live in Alaska with my husband and two teenage boys and wish I had the attention span to be a better cook.
Annabelle Anders
Married to the same man for over 25 years, I am a mother to three children and two Miniature Wiener dog.
After owning a business and experiencing considerable success, my husband and I got caught in the financial crisis and lost everything; our business, our home, even our car.
At this point, I put my B.A. in Poly Sci to use and took work as a waitress and bartender.
Unwilling to give up on a professional life, I simultaneously went back to college and obtained a degree in Energy Management.
And then the energy market dropped off.
And then my dog died.
I can only be grateful for this series of unfortunate events, for, with nothing to lose and completely demoralized, I sat down and began to write the romance novels which had until then, existed only my imagination.
I am happy to have found my place in life.
Finally.
Anna Bradley is an RT Reviewer's Choice award-winning author of Regency Historical Romances. Anna came by her love of the regency-era the usual way--via a deep, abiding love for Jane Austen, and an appreciation for gentlemen in breeches and polished Hessians.
Anna's next book, MORE OR LESS A TEMPTRESS, releases on November 13, 2018. Anna lives with her husband and two children in Portland, OR, where people are delightfully weird and love to read.
