Anyway you slice it, it comes off with a lot more attention than the last slice of holiday fruitcake.

Okay, so at my table that wouldn't be too hard to do...LOL...but seriously, this was a lot of fun!

From the various tropes running around that will draw their individual fan bases to the fabulous characters you'll be cheering on from the word go, the story potential was BIG and it lived right up to it!  I loved our leads, both Rosie and Drew.  They each had their histories, some shared and others not so much, and they each had their own challenges of the moment, which of course leads to the proposed solution for them both, but in the end, their hearts were totally in sync, and their chemistry was off the charts.  😉  ...no mistletoe needed, although the tree setup was PERFECTION!

If you're looking for a great holiday romance?  Check into The Duchess Hotel (see what I did there?!) and experience a staycation you won't want to forget.  OH, and did I mention it appears to be the first in a potential series?  Oh yeah...I'll be keeping room on my TBR for me!

This was a book that came my way earlier in the year, and I actually started reading it way back then, but other obligations cropped up along the way, so it had to be put on the proverbial backburner to read as I could.  The good news...the story is memorable, and the characters have a life of their own, so once I picked it up again, there was no lag time.  I didn't have to back track in order to feel like I was in the right mindset, or jiving with the timeline; everything simply fell into place.

Hope was such a resilient young woman, taking life by the horns and doing what needed to be done in order to care for her two children.  To say she was dealt a bad hand would be negligent, because she had a hand in creating the life she had, however, the fall from happy home to divorced single parent was certainly not her doing.  The fallout from a good marriage turned bad came in may shapes and forms, thanks to the piece of work that up and left with pretty much everything, but you can't keep a good woman, and a great mom, down.  Hope put her big girl pants on and carried on, if not for her sake, but the sake of her children.  Times were very tough, but she scraped and scrapped, and did what needed doing in order to provide the basics...shelter, food, clothes, and love.  The last one came in such a great abundance that when it came to a moment of good luck, she couldn't fully trust it, or the person's intent delivering the prize.  I don't blame her, she was thinking of more than the moment, and in truth prizes often come with other expenses than the ones it actually covers, but having to tell her kids no every time something twisted and turned it away from the bright and shiny holiday it seemed to be, was too much.  So, she carried the burden herself, suffered through the heartache...and in the end, found not only her place in this town she called home, but a kindred spirit waiting to be recognized, accepted, and loved as well.

I loved the town, the main characters, and the townspeople.  Hope and her kids were a team through and through.  Watching her struggle through the tough times was heartache inducing, but knowing there had to be something more out there for her left you filled with hope.  Steve and his brother were quite the pair, and their relationship really warmed your heart.  It didn't matter his challenges with communicating with the world, together they made it work because they really listened to one another with their minds AND their hearts.  I appreciated his diligence as well, even when things really turned south, because it showed the goodness behind his character.  While the idea of the BIG PRIZE was great, and the fallbacks realistic, I will say that, for me, there may have been one too many turn aways, but in the end, things still reached that moment of warmth filled with that glow of happiness we all look for.

All in all, it was a story that reminds us there are good people in the world and happily-ever-afters do exist, if only we're willing to put the effort in to reach it.  Take a trip to Hope Valley and discover some of the magic the season offers, while perhaps gathering a view ideas of how you can put more good out into the world this holiday and thereafter!

Definitely no false advertising here...it WAS a great Christmas romance!

Go ahead.  Admit it.  At some point in you life, you had a celebrity crush.  Most fade with time, but how often do you actually get the chance to turn them from fond daydreams into reality?  Our leading lady, Lucy, gets to realize that dream, and yet not simply as a wish fulfilled from once upon a time, but as an even better version because it's REAL.  Finn was the object of her desires, and had a stroke of luck getting into the business he's in, but fame can get old, especially when everyone thinks they know you because they've seen your work.  This Christmas, even the star of the show gets a special wish...to finally be seen for who he is beyond the movie star status.  Now don't get me wrong, there are awkward meet cute moments, and a few times of utter embarrassment as well, but all's well that ends well, right?

One of my favorite parts, occurs closer to the end, when characters are facing their fears, and you're on pins and needles to see if they can make it through...of course the surprise moment there was a fab fit as well, but something about showing the other person that they matter most, just gets me right there.  💓  Definitely a potential couple worth taking a chance on this reading season, or any time you're in the mood for a little celebrity and everyday Jane sort of romance.  It felt real enough with the complications that cropped up along the way, but despite the good reasons behind staying apart, you won't be able to help rooting for them to make it back together again.

Take one part A Christmas Carol, with one part It's a Wonderful Life, shake, shimmy, and stir to set the potion in motion for a holiday mishap Caroline won't soon forget!

This is definitely a case of the familiar being taken in a new direction. I loved the aspects of the story that I could recognize from those tales of old, but I equally loved the new twists. How so? Well, in lieu of three separate spirits, it seems that even the ghosts are experiencing a supply in demand type issue and have to multitask. The big scary potential ending that shocks old Ebenezer into action has a rather mundane effect on our big city gal; very now, but still chuckle worthy. Then there's the future that could have been filled with so many hiccups, surprises, and the unexpected that your heart both hurts and beats in time with the heightened fever moments. I don't want to disclose too much because half the fun is seeing her reactions to everything and everyone she encounters, but let's just say her little spirit guild definitely knew what she was doing.

All in all, it's a great holiday tale that reminds us to prioritize the right things in life. Success, money, fame, popularity, and the like have their time and place, but we can't take them with us, nor will they comfort us on a bad day, or share in your joyous moments. Build a life you can look back on and say, I TRULY LIVED; I TRULY LOVED.

Have you ever wished your life could be like a Hallmark Christmas movie? You know, a heroine looking for a new start in a charming, quaint town, where she happens into a meet-cute she can't identify, develops feelings she can't quite name as does the other party of the meet, obstacles appear that are deftly knocked down, and then one final big hurdle and BOOM...romantic outlook clear and happily ever after straight ahead! Yeah...a life like that where you could live ALL OUT all the time and not worry about if things will work out because without a doubt they will...that would be the life. So...why can't you live that way? Why can't it all work out? Is it silly to pin our hopes and dreams on something that may seem like a stretch to many, but could simply be out of reach do to a lack of faith on our part? Am I asking too many questions because, yeah...I too would love to live that way, but lack the yuletide influenced confidence to do so? Maybe...but I bet I share that sled with many, now back to the book...

Flora is a doll! She is unapologetically HER in everything she does and that's FANTASTIC! She's a great person with a bad track record in work and love, but it's not for a lack of trying. The former...she helps too many people, much to her own detriment; the latter...she doesn't want to compromise herself for someone else. Neither was something I could fault her for, so when she embarked on this new stage in her life, I was right there rooting her on. I couldn't think of a better solution to her problems, and with the friends she has, as well as the ones she makes, she's definitely on the way to a brighter future, come what may. That come what may comes in the form of a "Norse god" type man that would give the Grinch a run for his money, and yet is connected with one of the biggest holiday events in their area. Go figure. The run-ins he has with her range from straight aggravation to heart flutter moments, with a few embarrassing ones in-between, but in the end...there's the hope for a reformed man, there's the chance of a wish granted, and a candy cane sweet ending that is fit for the season.

Start your holiday reading early and get to know the true meaning of Christmas from festive Flora...as she opens hearts one encounter at a time.

Hello, and thank you so much for hosting me today as part of the Twelve Dates ‘Till Christmas blog tour!

I think I’m more nervous about the release of this book than any previous title, as it’s definitely a change in direction for me, and a story that really took me by surprise, much like the possible change of feelings for Lexie and Callum, in the three months up to Christmas 2019. 

Some of my favourite stories have featured the friends-to-lovers trope (it’s up there with enemies-to-lovers for me), including some of my on-screen favourites too – I know Friends focuses so much attention on Ross and Rachel, but don’t Monica and Chandler somehow seem the happier pairing, without all the drama? Not that going from friends to lovers isn’t without its problems. After all, once that boundary has been crossed, it can be impossible to come back from, and certainly both Callum and Lexie have worried about ruining what is a perfectly good friendship, one which has lasted through all the drama of university, moving to London, and starting off in their dream jobs. Is a shot at romance really worth the risk of losing all of that?

Callum and Lexie arrived in my mind fully-formed, and I knew at once they had a solid history behind them. They knew all of each other’s little quirks, what they were thinking in most situations, and had that almost telepathic connection that true friends have. I had also just seen a friend talking about writing a Christmas romance, and I had been wanting to write another novella, having really enjoyed writing The Last Plantagenet?, so everything slotted together nicely. 

After all, who doesn’t love a spot of romance in the lead-up to Christmas? For me, I love the perfect Christmas romances, and it isn’t a proper December now without a spot of Love Actually, for example. There’s something about the season, I think, which lends itself to romance far more than summer does in my mind. Twinkling lights, big snuggly jumpers, and plenty of reasons to be out and about celebrating. That’s where Callum and Lexie come in, for each other at least. Having been friends ‘forever’ in their eyes, they always have the other on stand-by for the big seasonal events, like work-place Bonfire Night or Christmas parties, or whenever a plus-one would be ‘useful’. 

We first meet them at an engagement party for two of their university friends, and as usual, the comments are there about how perfect Callum and Lexie are for each other. Until Callum does his usual, and vanishes, to be spotted later, trying to charm the chief bridesmaid. Could he even be boyfriend material if he wanted to be? Lexie isn’t sure, but she is sure that she’s getting a little tired of the constant remarks from their friends. 

Things carry on as usual, until Callum’s oldest friend, Mark, arrives back in town after years of working overseas. I think sometimes, it can take an outsider, somebody who hasn’t been too deep into a situation to see the truth of things, whether that’s in terms of romance, friendship, or even work problems. Mark raises some questions in Callum’s mind, as well as causing sparks to fly when he asks Lexie out on a date, and she says ‘yes’… 

I had great fun tying poor Callum and Lexie in knots in the run up to their Christmas 2019, and really hope everyone enjoys reading it just as much!

About the author...

Jennifer C. Wilson stalks dead people (usually monarchs, mostly Mary Queen of Scots and Richard III). Inspired by childhood visits to as many castles and historical sites her parents could find, and losing herself in their stories (not to mention quite often the castles themselves!), at least now her daydreams make it onto the page.

After returning to the north-east of England for work, she joined a creative writing class, and has been filling notebooks ever since. Jennifer won North Tyneside Libraries’ Story Tyne short story competition in 2014, and in 2015, her debut novel, Kindred Spirits: Tower of London was published by Crooked Cat Books. The full series was re-released by Darkstroke in January 2020.

Jennifer is a founder and host of the award-winning North Tyneside Writers’ Circle, and has been running writing workshops in North Tyneside since 2015. She also publishes historical fiction novels with Ocelot Press. She lives in Whitley Bay, and is very proud of her two-inch view of the North Sea.
