Women's History Month: Refusing to Be Silenced... FROM PLAIN TO PLANE by Patty Bear - REVIEW!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Did you know that March is Women's History Month? In fact, it all started back in 1980 with the first official Women's History Week and grew to its current month long affair beginning in 1995. It's a month to celebrate all that women have done to make strides for their gender in life, politics, and other national/international forums. Last year's events were curtailed thanks to in part to the pandemic, so the chosen theme carried over to 2021...Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.

Today's title in the spotlight was chosen specifically to celebrate this month with a REAL story that, while not necessarily gaining us the right to vote, certainly reflects the “refusing to be silenced” part in more ways then one. We're setting our sites on a Memoir, released this February via Barnstormers Press, that takes us through the life and times of a child growing up in the Mennonite community, and the unusual, unexpected, and uncommonly high turns her life took along the way. Ladies and gentleman, please join me as we welcome today's book of choice...

From Plain to Plane: My Mennonite Childhood, a National Scandal, and an Unconventional Soar to Freedom

Patty Bear

Barnstormers Press

About the book...
Patty Bear grew up among the "Plain People" amidst bountiful farmlands, black bonnets, and black cars. It was a world unto itself, both bucolic and beastly, with traditions and beliefs from the old world deeply rooted in the fertile soil of Central Pennsylvania.

Insulated by a culture that steadfastly kept its distance from outsiders and the march of progress, as a little girl she anticipated following in her mother's footsteps. But in 1972, at the age of eight, her father sparked religious controversy and ignited a scandal rare in the Mennonite community. Abruptly subjected to the chaos that surrounded the ritual practice of shunning, Patty, her mother, and five siblings were swept into a tornado of absurd accusations and public humiliation, forced to hide and endure publicity that headlined prominent national newspapers for almost a decade.

With her childhood and adolescence overshadowed by domestic violence and her father's abusive rhetoric, as well as persistent teaching by the Church that women were designed for subjugation and obedience, Patty's assumed image of her future gradually shifted-leading her to heed the call of her wild soul and the whispers of her Guides toward a bold quest for freedom she never imagined possible.

I definitely don't review this type of work the same way I do those of Fiction. I always try to keep in mind that this was/is someone's life, their trials, tribulations, joys, sorrows, celebrations, and learning experiences. It's a tale that can be wonder-filled or lacking that certain spark, but it's real nonetheless and that makes it important.

Patty Bear let's us inside her world, from childhood to present times, with an uncensored look at all that transpired. From the weird to the wonderful, the traditions to the tragedies, the blessed events to the shunning both inside and outside their beliefs, we see a family from both sides of their faith. Torn apart by one man's tirade against a church, held together by the blood that ran through their veins, it was hard being a witness at times to some of his actions, the reactions, and games. He could never see past his own selfishness to what he was doing to everyone around him. He could put on a show and play the wounded party, but in truth, he was creating his own victims. I won't dwell on his piece, although it is a big part of the tale shared, because I don't want to taint our celebration here...because there is much to celebrate.

Despite all Patty and her siblings, as well as their mother for that matter, went through, there was light at the end of the journey. All achieved freedom in their own way, some more so than others, and watching their growth happen regardless of the events unfolding was something to smile about. I loved when Patty found her footing, so to speak, in sports, but also when she really started to spread her wings to fly. It was satisfying to see this child become a young adult with a dream and eventually a woman with a destiny destined by her self. She was even able to see that while she may have wished it all away if given the chance, the hardships she went through, the bad times she survived, all went into making her the strong person she is today.

All in all, it was a fascinating story, filled with memories of things held close to her heart as well as some best forgotten, but learned from. While overall what transpired was in turns appalling, fascinating, and inspiring (as to how she and her family pulled through, each in their own way), the way her story was structured was rather broken...which posed a slight problem for me. I get (as she explains in her introduction), the author was piecing parts of the story back together herself, as a lifetime is hard to remember for anyone, let alone with so much media attention, but it made for a tougher digestion of the tale. Go in with that awareness, and it'll make the journey that much smoother.

RRR presents... THE UNFINISHED GARDEN by Barbara Claypole White - REVIEW!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining Rachel's Random Resources for a stop along their current tour starring a work of Women's Fiction that I just so happened to escape into the AUDIOBOOK version of.  *GASP*  I know, right?  I was surprised too!  I haven't listened to many, although the few I have at this point, I have adored (I'm pretty picky though...the narration is key here not just the story!)...and this one is included in that summation.  Yes, once I got into the groove of the story, James was definitely James to a T, and no one could have played Tilly any better than our Tilly here (the unique combination of Southern and English accents was right on!)...but I'm getting ahead of myself.  Allow me to properly introduce today's audiobook of choice and blog tour guest...

by
Barbara Claypole White

About the book...
A love story about grief, OCD, and dirt

Tilly Silverberg is rebuilding her life with her young son, Isaac, one potted-up plant at a time. Since her husband’s death, gardening has become her livelihood and her salvation. Hiding out in the North Carolina forest, she wants only to be left alone with Isaac and her greenhouse.

New to the area, successful software developer James Nealy needs a garden. On a solitary mission to reclaim his life from irrational obsessions and relentless compulsions, he has a plan: to conquer his greatest fear. Dirt. One glimpse—or two—of Tilly’s garden, and he knows she holds the key. But when he asks her to take him on as a client, she refuses.

After a family emergency pulls Tilly and Isaac back to her native England, she’s quietly happy, because nothing has changed in her childhood village. Or has it? Her first love is unexpectedly single, her mother is scheming, and her best friend is keeping secrets. Then James appears on her doorstep.

Tenuous at first, but gradually taking root, James and Tilly forge an unlikely bond. As they work together to rescue a garden choked by neglect, they unearth each other’s secrets, each other’s fears, each other’s hopes—and maybe, a shared second chance.

Alrighty them, so as I was saying...this was only my fourth audio book EVER, since I generally have a hard time getting the narrator I "hear" in my mind versus with my ears to match up.  So yeah, I had to get use to the male and female duo narrating this one.  Honestly, I think I liked the gentleman voicing James (predominantly) a bit more (at least at first), and he really gave what felt like an honest voice to the inner torture that OCD must cause.  The lady giving voice to Tilly (predominantly) took a moment to get the knack of, but it totally fit the character and her origins.  Once they were both "in my head" so to speak, I was hooked and ready to "read".

Tilly and Isaac were quite the team, though I couldn't help but wonder what she was hiding from.  I mean, I see she's been through a traumatic experience, and she has her little boy to think of, but there was definitely something else there...a premonition that gets proved more than right later on.  As for my initial reaction to James Neely...well, quite honestly I wasn't sure what to make of him. Throwing around money is nice and all, but offering double for a garden from a nursery that doesn't even DO gardens is a bit more than eccentric...not to mention the lengths to which he continued to try to wear Tilly down.  Don't worry, I mean in some vein I suppose it could be viewed as stalkerish behavior, but it's certainly not intended to be or taken by Tilly in that tone, letting readers rest more at ease and continue burrowing deeper into the story.

As things progressed both in their relationship (whatever label you wanted to throw at it) and in her personal dramas, I couldn't love the characters anymore than I did.  I was so scared for Tilly when everything was coming apart...and adored Isaac and how smart/sweet he is...and James, well he still remained an unknown quantity for the most part, but was endearing nonetheless. Sebastian on the other hand...I was never really keen on, and quite frankly, Tilly's bestie Rowena wasn't really making be a believer of her character either, but then again there was more on both their plates then we were privy to at the moment.  By book's end, I was completely in love with everything, longing to know just who she would end up with, and honestly thought it might even be herself for that matter (really, so much drama...did she really need it?).  I won't spoil the ending, but I will say that while my guesses were sometimes proven to be truths, it wasn't in call cases, and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome.

All in all, an AMAZING listen/read that I highly recommend to fan's of the Women's Fiction genre. It has loss and love, surprises and revelations, future dreams and realities come true...and it all comes packaged in a fabulous tale that will warm your heart and tantalize the soul.

Today, Storybook Sunday is celebrating the power of pink!  That's right. We're joining millions of women around the world as they come together this weekend to commemorate the 2017 Women's March...and do it all over again.  What IS the Women's March?  Good question.  The best explanation I've seen is this...

We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families - recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.

If you've had the pleasure of joining one in person, do tell!  If not, never fear...there are many ways to participate in your own little way, including reading and sharing the first book in our pink duo today.  So, without further ado, I give you today's storybooks of choice...

While a lovely commemoration of the Women's March that took place round the world January 21, 2017, it's also a great reminder of just how loud our forces can be when used as one. It's a visual representation of not simply a pink hat traveling here, there, and everywhere, being used for a variety of purposes and with so much strength in its fibers to withstand anything and everything, but of the power of women and why equal rights in all aspects of life is not simply a desire...but a right.

Priscilla and the Pink Planet

Priscilla is a wonderful girl who simply has had too much of a good thing...the color pink! She sets out to find another color, ANY COLOR in her rosy hued world. When a potential find is made, she discovers there's more to this single colored land than meets the eye...but with a little eye-opening suggestion from Priscilla herself, perhaps the beauty of the color can be found anew.

This was another unexpected find at my library's second chance bookstore and boy am I ever glad I found it! It reminded me very much of a pink-hued Dr. Seuss story in both writing and illustrations. Our leading little lady is charming, as is her endeavor to brighten her world, plus the ingenuity she displays when push comes to shove was ace. A great story for fans of the color pink, or simply those looking for a tale that's...out of this world...and a great reminder that it takes MANY COLORS to make the world the truly beautiful place it is.

Women's History Month: WTBDA First Ladies by Ruby Shamir - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Image result for Women's history month

Today, we're joining in the WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH celebration with a great new release via Penguin Young Readers.  It's a work of Children's Non-Fiction presented in a somewhat Picture Book format that highlights the accomplishments and triumphs of some of America's most noted female voices over the past 100 some odd years...otherwise known as the First Ladies.  Ready, set, edutainment is on deck...

Following in the footsteps of So You Want to Be President?, this first book in a new series features fun, kid-friendly facts about America's First Ladies and shows young readers just why they're such a big deal.

Did you know that Mary Todd Lincoln played a huge role in fighting to end slavery? Or that Edith Wilson decoded secret messages from our allies during World War I? Or that Michelle Obama has led a nationwide initiative to promote healthy lifestyles for children?

Or how about fun facts: Did you know that Grace Coolidge had a pet raccoon? Or that Dolley Madison loved oyster ice cream? (And would later have a brand of ice cream named after her!)

In addition to being hostesses, ambassadors, activists, educators, historians and role-models, each first lady put her own stamp on the White House and her husband's presidency. Filled with fun, kid-friendly facts that bring each First Lady to life on the page, this picture book written by a member of a former first lady's staff, shows us just how much our nation's first ladies have accomplished from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama.

Alrighty then, so that's that.
The end of the review.
What's that?
I didn't actually review it?
Yes, I know, but you see, this was an "anything-but-just-a-review" tour, so the post gets to turn a bit creative, reflective, or otherwise non-review-y.  Are you ready?  Here goes!

So, we were each assigned a first lady to highlight, and my first choice was a no brainer...

Image result for mary todd lincoln

...Mary Todd Lincoln.

Why?
Well, back in high school, I did a pretty extensive report that counted for both my English final and History final on her husband, Mr. Abraham Lincoln.  Yes, I was THAT girl.  I was the one tasked with uncovering the life and times of one of histories most memorable leaders and by golly, it was time to learn more about the little missus!  But, my fair readers, don't think she stood by idly as Abe got all honest to the folks of the nation and created a ruckus that would wound and heal a nation divided.  No siree!  She was right there in the fray!

Image result for facts

*She hated slavery with a passion as fiery and fierce as her husband, partnering with him to put an end to the barbaric practice.

*She opened the White House to thousands of guests believing in welcoming the "every day" man and woman, not shutting them out behind walls of power.  Sadly, she paid for her generosity at times...loosing the very buttons off her shirt, err...dress to some less than honest souls, but she was not to be deterred.

*Continuing with the open door policy of sorts, she was the first first lady to welcome African Americans to the White House, a practice that was highly controversial back in her day and times.

Image result for girl power

All of these reasons and more are why I highly respect this particular first lady, but there are many more to learn about and from within the pages of this nifty Picture Book.  I highly recommend it for all ages as a great source of edutainment, and inspiration for the next female leaders among us.
