Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to... The Ground that Devours Us by Kalla Harris - REVIEW!

 THE GROUND THAT DEVOURS US
by
Kalla Harris
Entangled Teen

About the book...

The world ended ten years ago.

Vampires showed up, took over, and turned the whole planet into their personal all-you-can-drink buffet. The president? Bloodsucker. The government? Bloodsuckers. My social life? Absolutely nonexistent.

But hey, at least I had one thing going for me—slayer training. My twin sister, Ripley, and I were about to go pro, officially joining the ranks of the last people on earth who actually do something about the whole “undead overlords” situation.

And then X had to show up. The vampire boogeyman. The worst of the worst. And instead of killing Ripley, like any decent monster would, he turned her. Now she’s technically a vamp, but something tells me my sister is still in there. Which means I can’t slay her.

What can I do? Break every rule. Lie to my friends. Strike a deal with the most dangerous vampire on the planet: X will protect Ripley from everyone else who wants her dead—like, really dead—until I can snag the cure for vampirism. The catch? Risking my own head to help him free his good-for-nothing BFF from the very slayers who taught me everything.

If I want Ripley back, I’m going to have to play nice with the thing that ruined my life. And the worst part?

I think he’s enjoying this.

🦇 🦇 🦇 🦇 🦇 🦇 🦇 🦇 🦇

This is definitely more of a "protect-my-loved-ones-even-though-they-are-now-undead" story than a romance, so if you're thinking Twilight-esque, meh... not so much. To me, that's not a bad thing! I don't mind when a story draws you in with similarities, but I love when they stand on their own literary feet, and I think this one does!

🌟 The things the vampires are able to do are varied, how they turn new ones into, well, new ones...unique. I gotta say their preferred method of travel is rather fascinating. I've never read nor watched a vampire lore story that included something like this, so major points on creativity to the author for spiking my curiosity, and I was certainly invested in the story to see who was really the "bad guy", if there was a chance at redemption (and what form it might take), and simply how it would all play out.

I admit, the pace is the storyline threw me a little bit though. We start out in the thick of things and full steam ahead... and then sorta drop into days/weeks passing where we really don't make any discernable progress seemingly worth the time that's expired. Overall, it only causes a little friction, but certainly not enough to stall the story.

Rockstar Book Tours presents... BLOODY FOOL FOR LOVE by William Ritter - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today is definitely one of those fangirl type days because the spot I'm hosting on the current Rockstar Book Tours promotion is definitely from a world of LOVE!  Well, okay, so it has fangs, and all sorts of paranormal critters and such, but it's from the BUFFYVERSE so how can you say no?! That's right. I am thrilled to be hosting BLOODY FOOL FOR LOVE by William Ritter, out now via Disney Publishing Group. Check out my review post below and make sure to enter the giveaway before you head over to the other sites participating in today's tour!

Title: BLOODY FOOL FOR LOVE: A Spike Novel

Author: William Ritter

Pub. Date: August 2, 2022

Publisher: Disney Publishing Group

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 256

Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, Kindle, B&N, iBooks, Kobo, TBD, Bookshop.org

Bloody Fool for Love from New York Times best-selling author William Ritter marks the beginning of an all-new series that explores prequel stories about fan-favorite Buffy characters.

A verified villain. A slayer killer. A god among vampires. And most of all? A hopeless romantic...

Spike just wants to enjoy the spoils of his new badass reputation. He’s now a legendary slayer killer, and he’s returning to London—the greatest city in the world. Unfortunately, his new abode is far from ideal (a dank basement), and the rest of his strange little “family” is reeling from the fact that their patriarch, Angellus, abandoned them. Spike’s love, Drusilla, seems especially heartbroken and spends her time lost in her tarot cards and planning their next gruesome family dinner when they all can be reunited.

Desperate to break Dru out of her melancholy, Spike vows to steal a powerful relic that will help her focus on their dark future together. It’s the perfect plan—that is until a monster named Gunnar, leader of the demon underworld of London, steals the relic first. Forced to form his own ragtag group of underworld denizens, Spike plans an epic heist against a ruthless gang of undead criminals. As he navigates paranormal plots, royal black ops, and breaks for teatime (they may be abominations, but they’re British abominations, thank you very much), Spike soon realizes that his homecoming is about to get bloody.

This rompy, action-packed novel inspired by one of Buffy’s most infamous bad boys is part Bonnie and Clyde, part Sherlock and Watson, with just a bit more bloodsucking.

Reviews:
"Ritter introduces several charismatic new side characters and nails the fan favorites’ voices, from Spike’s wisecracks to Dru’s hilariously bizarre musings. The tone―a mashup of funny, dark, and thrilling―fits perfectly with the show...This entertaining story will please Buffy fans and is easily accessible to newcomers who appreciate charming paranormal baddies...A diverting Buffyverse tale."―Kirkus Reviews

Guys. Guys. GUYS! GUYS!
Yeah, you there!
Remember the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
The TV series, not the movie.
The characters, the storyline, the ups, downs, and in-betweens?
Yeah, this will TOTALLY take you back there in the BEST way possible!

Though the author may not have had a hand in the original writing, he certainly nailed Spike, and his cohorts at the time, PERFECTLY.  From fangs to hang ups, dialogue to lack of planning, you feel like you've stepped back in time before the Buffy days and are catching up with big bad William the Bloody.  Fresh from his slayer kill, and hanging with two of his three "family" members...Angelus had a pesky soul again...Spike is heading back to jolly old England.  However, times have changed and there's a new paranormal force in town, bigger and badder than the vamps...or so they say.  I mean, when has Spike ever backed down from a challenge, especially when it involves something Drusilla wants.  Anything to keep his little lady happy, am I right?  Things get out of hand, as usual, and by book's end, the walls are all crumbling down, figuratively AND literally...but you'll swear to having had the best time of your life (or afterlife, if that happens to be your current state).

Fans of the original will find themselves comfortably at home between the pages as we take a closer look at the life and times of a character that had a pretty big story arc as the series continued, and yet we only saw a fraction of his past.  It was quite a relief to see how well the author pegged William (ironic that he shares a name with the lead...🤯), as well as Dru (so much creepiness there!) and Darla (always thinking ahead, but never shying from the action!).  I, for one, enjoyed myself immensely, and can't wait to see if we get more additions to Spike's story as well as those of the other characters to let fans revel in the world once again and invite new readers into the fold!

Silver Dagger Book Tours presents... SHADOW SEEKER by Michelle Areaux - SPOTLIGHT + GIVEAWAY!

Shadow Seeker
A Crow Haven Series Book 1
by Michelle Areaux
Genre: YA Paranormal Mystery, Romance

My name is Lizzie Sanders and I am far from normal. You see, I know ghosts and demons exist. How? Because I am the daughter of Sadie Sanders--mediator to the dead extraordinaire. However, that isn’t what makes me different. No, discovering I am a Shadow Seeker is what truly signifies my own fate in the supernatural world.

In one breath, my entire life was flipped upside down. At the heart of small-town America, Nicholasville, KY houses southern charm and deep-rooted secrets. It is here that I am forced to move after my parents inherited my great aunt’s farm.
This was supposed to be a change for us-- a place where no one knew our past, but of course, this town is haunted with its own mysteries yet to be revealed. The true enigma being the secrets plaguing Crow Haven-- and the family it protects.
Just when I thought I could handle the insane world I lived in, everything changed.

He happened.
Ace Creed.

He might be drool-worthy, but he is insufferable with his moody attitude and demanding ways. Thankfully, I have his sister, Maylee, on my side to help me deal with Ace.

As it turns out, though, Ace’s attitude is the least of my troubles.

Now, demons are attacking innocent people in town and coming straight for me. With the help of Ace and Crow Haven, I must uncover a way to rid our town of the demons and save myself.

Only, I have no idea what is more terrifying: the demons after me or the guy stealing my heart.

Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to DEMON BOUND by Chris Cannon!

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're shouting a great big HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY to author Chris Cannon, as a new title hits virtual shelves via Entangled TEEN.  It's a paranormal doozy of a GREAT TIME between the pages that you definitely don't want to miss.  Don't believe me?  Well then, let's see if I can tantalize you...

 Demon Bound

by

Entangled TEEN

About the book...

When a summoning goes awry, suddenly booknerd Meena’s summer job becomes something drastically different. Instead of cleaning eccentric Carol’s house, she’s bound to a demon as his soul-collector. Soon Meena discovers that the boring, pageant-obsessed, bonfire-loving town that she’s never fit in to is a hotbed for soul-sucking demons, demon-hunting witches, and vampires who just wanna have fun… And then she comes into her own powers.

Could things get any stranger? Good thing she meets new guy Jake—who gets her and still hangs around.

When Jake’s mom sends him off to his Aunt Zelda’s for the summer, he thought he’d be bored. But nothing is what it seems in this town. His aunt isn’t just odd, she’s a witch who fights demons and tries to maintain the magical balance of the town. Jake should get the hell out of there and, he would leave, except for bad-ass newbie witch Meena, who looks at him like he matters.

He never counted on sticking around, but Meena’s bound to a demon who wants to destroy her soul—and Jake’s finally found someone worth fighting for.

I'm definitely not an ebook girl, but when this one came round from Entangled Teen, I couldn't say no!

It reminds me of a cross between BUFFY and SUPERNATURAL. You've got strong female characters in a town full of almost every paranormal type creature/critter you can think of (well, I mean it IS called CROSSROADS, so yeah...Sam and Dean would totally love this place)...living somewhat harmoniously. Unexpected? Yep...but things don't stay so calm and collected for long...and when things explode, BOY do they do so with spectacular results! You've got witches now working for Bane (a demon that enjoys his lot in life so much, he's made a business out of it), our girl Meena being drafted into the biz thanks to way too many loopholes in a supposed summer job contract with said demon having a bigger interest in her than simply her soul, magical powers appearing along with familiars that have smizing (when in human form) down pat, our boy Jake getting his rear handed to him time and time again either by the women in his life or readers, like me (yeah, Jake...so wanted to knock some sense into your unfortunately not unfortunate face), and SO MUCH MORE!

So, really...do yourself a favor and GET THIS BOOK because you won't be able to put it down. I wonder if they'll be more from the town of Crossroads because as FABULOUS as this one was...that could be SO freaking interesting!

Carlie Henson is pretty, popular, and an All-American girl. She has a gorgeous boyfriend and a mother who lives to keep her safe. Probably because everyone is drawn to Carlie…including the murderers she has the ability to identify when she looks in the eyes of their victims.

Keeping Carlie’s secret is pretty simple when all she has to do is avoid dead people. But when a cheerleader at her high school is murdered and the killer seems to have gotten away with it, Carlie knows what she has to do. With the help of her boyfriend, Dillon, she devises a plan to see what she must, no matter her personal safety.

But when Dillon is the one who’s injured in the showdown with the killer, Carlie vows to never help anyone again…until the next young woman attacked is her best friend, Jenna.

I was five and a half when I realized I could see him. I was five and a half, two days, and six hours when I realized he could see me too.
There was nothing extraordinary about that night. Mom had long put me to bed, and she and Dad were watching an unsolved cold case show on TV. By the time I’d made my way downstairs for an unnecessary drink of water, a picture of a murdered lady was flashing on the screen. No one knew who’d killed her, and the cops had looked for the murderer for several years and given up.
“That’s such a shame,” my dad had said. He was still around then.
“Yeah, it is.” Mom’s words were dragging and nonchalant, as if she were reacting to some lame laundry detergent commercial or something.
But not me. There I stood in my Belle Disney Princess nightgown, my gaze transfixed on the television. I couldn’t move—couldn’t look away. Something about the image of that dead woman struck a chord—her lifeless body and wide, opened eyes.
All I could do was scream. “I know who killed her!” I remember the panic, the way it made my stomach ache and my skin crawl. “I know who did it! I can see his face!”
“Carlie.” Dad picked me up, the exasperation in his voice as clear to me now as it had been ten years ago. “What are you doing out of bed? This is way too scary for you to be watching.”
I was crying so hard my nose was running. “Daddy, I know who killed her! I can see him! I really can!”
Mom turned off the TV and took me from Dad. The puzzled look she threw him let me know she was at least listening to my wild claim, and to this day I’m grateful for her next move.
“Do you want Mommy to draw a picture of the face you’re seeing, sweet girl? Would that make you feel better?”
“Linda, what the hell are you doing? Don’t encourage her.” Dad was pissed at me to be up that late. He was always such a tight ass about things like bedtime.
“It might help her,” Mom insisted. “Something obviously has her freaked out, Patrick. I’m getting my sketchbook.”
It’s the one time I was actually glad that my mom’s a sketch artist for the Pensacola Police Department’s Homicide Division. People describing perps to her so she can draw them never bothered me. But the photos of decomposed bodies—the ones of unidentified missing persons that she has to create faces for—totally creeps me out.
Mom lit a lavender candle to help me relax and set me on her knee. “Go ahead, honey. Tell me what the man looks like.”
One hour and three holy shits from Dad later, I’d described a killer’s face, and Mom had him on paper. I was sure of it. But my parents were convinced I was simply spooked from seeing the dead lady on that show.
Until two nights later when he came for me.
