BLOG TOUR: Kika the Upside-Down Girl by Jessica Tudos

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're welcoming an iRead Book Tours tour starring a Children's Storybook from an author that knows the world as our little lady does...upside-down that is.  That's right!  It may sound odd, but it's quite clear once the story's end is reached that right-side-up may not be all its cracked up to be.  Ladies and gents, get in your favorite positions whether upside-right or downside-left or something in between, it's time to greet today's book of choice and blog tour guest...

I admit it, I wasn't in love with Kika....at first.
Ah ha!  Caught you off guard didn't I?  Not to worry, you'll recover.  Anyway...

At first read, I was a bit confused.  Why on earth would a child want to walk around on her hands all day, hand from a tree like a monkey, even do her class assignments UPSIDE-DOWN?  I just couldn't fathom it but then again, you're talking to the girl who follows the rules and the norm as closely as possible to avoid the spotlight or turning heads, so there is a bit of a difference.  As I kept turning pages though, it became all too clear...Kika just needed to find the RIGHT arena to spotlight her fascinating talents and the perfect group of fellow upside-downers to celebrate them with! A great reminder to be true to ourselves and not let the world make us conform to what's considered the norm.  Really, if we WERE all the same, how boring would that be?

Now, a storybook isn't only story but also pictures and that's what also stole my heart here.  Kika is adorable, bright, colorful, and bursting forth from each page...except when they are trying to turn her right-side-up, aka not letting her be herself.  Her cheerful little face exudes nothing but joy when set free and once she finds where she belongs, her smile doubles in size.  It was wonderful to see her in her glory, letting her enthusiasm and delight shape the world as she knew it.  Once again, a great way to remember that the world is what we make of it and can only get us down as much as we will let it.

Overall, a wonderful read that's imaginative and creative to boot while staying true to itself.  It conveys a message of love and acceptance in short, easy to read passages hidden amid pages of wonderful illustrations that will capture the eye and delight the youngest to the eldest.  I can definitely see older readers quirking an eyebrow at first read, but trust me...in the end, it all comes together to make a memorable moment worth sharing.

Intrigued by the title. This could have been based on my naughty little sister who went through a phase of walking on her hands whenever she could. Needless to say she was more supple than me and loved her trousers whilst I've always been more of a skirts/dress person .... not ideal for walking upside-down.
