About the book...

“Eric Carle never fails to surprise me—and yet every book he creates is so vibrantly true to who he is as an artist and a person,” says Michael Green, President and Publisher, Philomel. "The Nonsense Show offers us a glimpse of the funny, playful Eric Carle that I have come to know behind the scenes, while remaining true to his vision of introducing children to the world of fine art. When taken in context with his two most recent titles, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse and Friends, The Nonsense Show forms a trilogy of sorts, opening to young readers the worlds of expressionism, abstract art, and now surrealism. He is creating more than books; he is preparing children for a lifetime of loving words and art.”

Eric Carle commented, "The Nonsense Show came to me over a long period of time and I had fun working on it. It is a playful word-and-picture game and an upside-down way of looking at life and the world. I like these topsy-turvy points of view. I appreciate the way Surrealist artists like Magritte showed us all in their paintings that you have to keep looking, keeping paying attention. And keep playing.”

This was an unusual work of art.  At times I didn't know whether I was coming or going but what I did know is that my imagination was engaged.  That's the whole point!  It's suppose to make you think, spark questions, engage those thrusters of creativity, and make you ponder things you never did before.  It gives you a new way of looking at the same old thing and a new perspective to consider.  Take the fish in the cage and the bird under the water...

...would you have ever thought that possible?
...did you consider their feelings towards being out of their usual habitats?
...how would the bird swim?
...how with the fish fly?
...what does the fish think of the fresh air?
...how does the bird like liquid oxygen?

There's so many ????'s to pUZzle and ponder while you gaze at the imagery it's RiDIcuLous...
...which is exactly the point.  Confused?  Don't be...there's MORE where ThaT came FroM and still more in the liKes of YOUR imagination to uncover!  A book recommendation for the young and young at heart to enchant, entrance, and ENGAGE!

I don't know how many copies of The Hungry Caterpillar I've bought, lent out never to get back only to buy another copy and lend it out never to get back.

No longer working as a teaching assistant and with no children of a suitable age its been a while since I've taken a look at this authors work. However with three great-nephews all of under five I hope to rectify this.

Whoops, nearly forgot my pun. Not a pun as such and I don't know any caterpillar jokes so how about this, my favourite butterfly joke?

Q: Why couldn't the butterfly go to the dance?
A: Because it was a moth ball!
