The Adventures of Eric the Spider by Elaine Madle

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining Faye Rogers PR for a stop along their current tour featuring a Children's Picture Book you're gonna want to read to believe.  It's stars an unusual lead that goes on some interesting adventures one must certainly would not expect with quite a bit of rhyming fun along the way.  Sound good?  Great...let's get started!  Today's blog tour guest and book of choice is...

About the book...
Eric may only be a little spider, but that doesn't stop him from having some big adventures!

When a spider, with big, long, spider legs, is spotted behind a curtain he seems a little scary. Luckily, he is quickly caught in a box full of socks and named Eric.

But when Eric steals the socks (and a bike!) and goes on the run it is up to a diligent policeman to find the right sock-footed spider, stop Eric and rescue the bike!

Join Eric on his adventures as he escapes with some socks, flees from a birthday party, and goes camping on a very, very wet day in this beautifully illustrated rhyming book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was quite the adventure...and I'm not just saying the because the lead is a teeny tiny but giant in his own right SPIDER...but because it's really THREE stories in one!
We start out with an introduction to our hairy "friend" as he peeks from behind a pair of curtains only to take off the next moment with his eight legs adorned in mismatched socks, "borrowing" a bicycle built for a biped (but that doesn't stop him!), and getting himself locked up.  Yes, LOCKED UP!  Well, what did you expect?  That's what happens when you take what isn't yours, and parade around in mismatched socks and equally mismatched trainers.  Make that be a lesson for you all...  *giggle*
Next up, a camping trip...and if you think a spider can't have fun camping, you are ENTIRELY wrong.  No, he's not scaring the daylights out of people, or simply hanging out in a corner weaving a home.  No, our Eric is doing his own version of hang gliding, watersports, and even saving the day when his unprepared co-camper is being done in by the weather.  Yep...it's amazing what one somewhat little guy can accomplish when he puts his head and eight legs to it.
Image result for bicycle
Last but not least, we are invited to Eric's birthday bash...but apparently a particular party crasher was not, or at least his sheer size and species scares the daylights out of all the guests, including the star of the hour.  What's a spider and his bug friends to do when someone that can feast on their very lives swoops in out of the dark?  Continue the party?  Dive for cover?  Run for your life?  It's a toss up and I'll let you find out for yourselves what Eric chooses, but suffice it to say, this story is a good reminder choose your party location wisely, and take responsibility for the messes you make.
All in all, I had a dandy time with Eric and friend (as they technically remain undisclosed allowing readers young and old, girl and boy, to claim the spot for themselves!), and I think kiddos will too.  From the fun illustrations to the creative rhyming, there's a lot going on between the pages that will have you smiling, in stitches, or somewhere in between...and according to the end pages, there's still more to come!
BLOG TOUR: Thomas Troll's Travels by Nicolas Starling
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're playing host to a stop along the Authoright Marketing & Publicity blog tour for a Children's Fiction release filled with fantasy, fun, and far off places.  It stars a little guy by the name of Thomas who just so happens to be a TROLL.  I know, I know...we're use to hearing about them under bridges, but hey, this is Norway, or at least that's where we start off, and considering it's their homeland, I'm pretty sure connecting structures aren't their only hang outs.  Ready or not, here comes today's ebook of choice...
About the book...
Thomas the Troll comes from Norway. Like most Trolls he is mischievous, naughty and full of adventure.
One day, he has to leave Norway because the troll elders are going to punish him for being so cheeky.  Thomas decides to live in England and has had all kinds of adventures on the way there.  He meets elves, gnomes and brings Ticklefish with him; Ticklefish are great fun and nearly as naughty as Trolls.  Thomas meets pirates a friendly ghost and even thinks he's sees the queen!
Some people think Trolls are a fairy tale. I don't. Do you?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thomas the Troll isn't content to just let life pass him by.  No siree, he prefers more sneaky endeavors that seem to get him in A LOT of hot water.  The last one though...stealing all the Troll toffee (not just a sweet tooth satisfier, either)...takes the cake, or rather toffee.  In one felt swoop he goes from prankster and trouble maker to the outcast of the village...basically the "most wanted" number one slot, if he were a human.  Good thing he doesn't mind relocating because that's really his only option.  Good thing he's open to meeting new people and creatures because he's about to.  Good thing he makes friends just as fast as enemies because he's gonna need all the help he can get.  Pillaging pirates, slumbering Trolls and Gnomes, even a Tinkerbell-esque elf that probably would be upset that I just referred to him as a girl fairy, even if his penchant for turning into a winged critter was more often than not, there's a wide cast of characters introduced along the way that leave their mark indelibly on Thomas and friends, passing on messages and morals along the way.

Now, for the tough part.  While it certainly had its moments and fair share of surprises, for me, the magic never really seemed to stick, and the traveling was a bit over the top. Though aiming for the kiddo audience, some of the content and writing begs for a slightly older age group, yet the tale doesn't seem to steer us that direction in concept or plot. I will say Thomas was a sweet troll underneath his mischievous exterior, and what he did for Tracy or even Ronnie, was commendable... I just can't say I was in love.  Who knows...perhaps YOU will be!  All it takes is just the right audience and TADA...instant magic.

BLOG TOUR: The Elephant of Frimley by Nicholas Rawls

Hi there!
Welcome back to post number two today on Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.  What can I say?  So many books, so little time.  I'm sure YOU understand...  ^-^

So, today's second tour comes to us via Authoright Marketing & Publicity, and stars a Children's Storybook filled to the brim with picture and verse.  No, really.  Every page has an image to catch the eye and witty rhymes to ensnare the tongue, what more could you want?  A story...I know...but guess what?  It has that too.  Ready or not, here comes our next book of choice...

About the book...
After the discovery of an elephant in their back garden, sisters Hannah and Emily make it their adventurous mission to return it to its home.

Originally written as a bedtime story for his two daughters, The Elephant of Frimley by Nicholas Rawls is a delightful and fun read that parents, primary school teachers and extended families will enjoy sharing with young children.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't know about you, but the moment I saw that sad little (okay, not so little) elephant on the cover with a tear in his eye, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG!  I mean, if I could have, I would have physically come through the page and given this poor guy a hug.  Why was he crying?  What could possibly be that bad in his little pachyderm life that warrants this level of sadness...and what's with the apple?  So many questions, all sparked from one image...and then we crack the cover and discover more...
...see what I mean?
MORE QUESTIONS!
Why is the little guy still upset?
Where are the children leading him?
WHAT'S GOING ON?!
Let me tell you now, all these questions and more ARE answered within the 48 pages, leading to a happy reunion you won't want to miss.  The illustrations are moving, the story is charming, and the rhymes are quite clever, even as things progress.  The message we're left with is that there is a place for everyone to call home, from the tall to the small, and people that care for us even when all seems lost.  We merely need to reach out a trunk, I mean, hand, to receive the help we need.
About the book...
Angelique has long thin legs, long thin arms and a turned-up nose on which sits an enormous pair of spectacles. Her spectacles are so big that they look like magnifying glasses and make her eyes look very large. She normally wears black shoes, a blue dress and a red scarf, and she had just been awarded all her Certificates and Diplomas to become a teacher. But she needs a job. Returning to her home village at the foothills of the French Alps, Angelique finds her childhood school has closed! All she needs is determination, enthusiasm and ten pupils to re-open the school and realise her dreams. But Angelique soon realises that her daily adventures have only just begun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we have a storybook that combines playful and colorful imagery with a lengthier tale than one might expect for the intended audience.  Though that may concern some choosing to read this story at bedtime, it's actually a pretty big PLUS!  Though it is wonderful to read all at once, it is broken into smaller pieces beautifully, so that it can be taken in smaller bites for younger readers.  The fact that you can match up your reading night to the day/chapter of the book is simply the cherry on the sundae!  Now, let's get between the pages...

We all have teachers we'll never forget.  They are the ones that molded and shaped our young minds, helped us see something about ourselves or the world that we never considered, and otherwise left an impression most favorable.  Angelique is certainly one of those people, despite her being a fictitious creation.  She's not afraid to get her hands dirty, encourages interaction in both the classroom and at play, and never lets a student fall through the cracks...whether human or otherwise.  ^-^  Yes, my friends, her imagination runs as wild as her hair, but that willingness to try something new, to let the students help guide their classroom learning as well as their creative endeavors is part of her charm...the fact that she has bubble potions to aid her in her quest is simply an accessory.  She provides the real magic, along with her students, and it is that connection forged that makes this story THAT much better...along with those wonderful illustrations!

Now, as this is a blog tour, I had the option of getting something a little extra for you guys and my pick was a GUEST POST from the author himself!  Topic suggested and accepted...a glimpse into their own school days so we can perhaps see where their inspiration for the book and love of learning came from.  So, ladies and gents, children and magical creatures of all ages, allow me to introduce, author Malcolm Howard....

School Days with Author Malcolm Howard

Image result for westgate on seaAged nine, I was packed off to boarding school. It was 1953 post-war Britain. My Dad was in the Army and it was not unusual to go to a boarding preparatory school.  Happily my elder brother was already there.

It was like something out of Harry Potter. Dressed in new uniform and cap I was taken to Victoria Station to join the school train to Westgate–on-Sea in Kent, complete with tuck box and trunk.

Today the journey would take about two hours by car, but then it took all day, and seemed to be a world away. So far away that parents would visit once a term and we would write weekly letters in the meantime.

The week before departure, I was riding down a hill standing on the back axle of a friend’s tricycle. “brakes don’t work” he said. I jumped off and incurred a broken front tooth and a bleeding face. Undaunted I arrived at school with scabs and stitches.

I enjoyed the boarding experience. They were years of innocence. I remember the Headmaster interrupting a Latin lesson to say that a storm had washed driftwood onto the beach. The lesson was suspended.

We took trolleys to the beach and loaded up old railway sleepers and wheeled them back to school. At the weekend we cut them up into logs, using a long two-handled saw operated by a boy on each end, for burning on the schoolroom fire.

Image result for geographyMy brother moved on to Pangbourne Nautical College because my Father thought he needed discipline! I was more of a daydreamer and moved on to Bradfield College in Berkshire.

I wasn’t a scholar. I drifted through and had a knack of just achieving the necessary pass mark to progress. I can’t say that I recall a favourite teacher. My Housemaster taught Geography which I managed to fail, but he still made me head of house.

I had just started my final year when my Father asked if I would like to sit the exam for Officer training at Sandhurst. True to form I passed by just three marks. I left the school at Christmas. I think my parents were finding it difficult to pay the fees.

I finished my education at the Royal Military Academy – where I got paid!
