Let the joys of commencement commence!: WILL THE PIGEON GRADUATE? by Mo Willems - REVIEW!

Graduation...a milestone in everyone's life on some level, and yet some look at it with joy, and others trepidation.  Is it truly something to fear, or something to make certain we've got the tasseled hat all ready to go for?  Let's take a bird's eye view at the matter with the infamous Pigeon in his latest adventure...

Written and Illustrated by
Mo Willems

Union Square Kids

For fans of the series, you know the pigeon and his wily ways...most recently when he tried to drive a sleigh, and was deciding whether a roller coaster ride was what he REALLY wanted.  Today, he's taking his first steps into the world of ADULTING, or at least NEW adulting, as he ventures forth into the unknown.  Okay, that sounded scary, let me rephrase.  He's possibly taking his first steps into the FUTURE as he contemplates whether or not he will graduate.  It's something everyone faces at some point in their lives, whether it be from elementary to middle school, middle to high school, college to...LIFE.  We all have milestones we're reaching for or tracking towards, and that next step into something COMPLETELY new can be scary.  There's so many questions unanswered, and so many questions to ask, and so many things that haven't even been thought about yet, but we're certain they're important that just escaped our minds.  The thing to remember though, the thing that makes it LESS scary....we've all been there, and while unknown, it doesn't have to be feared.  There are new roads to walk, new places to see, new people...and pigeons...to meet, and new goals to reach.  True, there will also be new challenges, but having faith in our own abilities to "fly" will help us truly soar.

A great addition to the series, and a great pick for those about to commence their commencement ceremonies in the near future.  If the Pigeon can do it, why can't we?

Scare up some weekend fun with the... GRAVEYARD GIRLS: Scream for the Camera by Lisi Harrison, Illustrated by Daniel Kraus - REVIEW!

The days are getting longer, and the temperature is rising, but you can still scare up some spine tingly nights with the right read! So, are you game? Well then, let me introduce you to the Graveyard Girls. We first met them in 1-2-3-4, I Declare a Thumb War ... but now, their story continues...

Graveyard Girls, Book 2
By
Lisi Harrison
Illustrated by
Daniel Kraus

Union Square Kids

About the book...

It’s been a month since the events of 1-2-3-4, I Declare a Thumb War, when the Graveyard Girls—Gemma, Whisper, Sophie, Frannie, and Zuzu—discovered Silas Hoke’s empty grave. A month, and no answers. That changes when messages from the other side start to creep up on the Graveyard Girls. Gemma’s good-luck charm. The skull in Whisper’s spilled milk. Sophie’s vanishing phone. Frannie’s theater curse. And Zuzu’s possessed Jōurnal. Who is trying to reach them . . . and why?

The good news: There might be one person with some answers. The bad news: She’s a mortician . . . with a deadly secret.

Speaking of bad news, straight-A Sophie is quickly sliding down the scale to becoming a B-flat friend. She is spending way more time hanging out with “Danger Me” and way less time with the Graveyard Girls and her schoolwork. Will her scary story be enough to win back her pals, or will her picture-perfect life become the ultimate photo bomb?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love the fact that this story picks up pretty much where we left off... long enough after the creepy spooky ending to give us a sense of calm, but not so far after that everything's changed. The girls are still together, besties at heart, but something is amiss, and if they don't figure it out sooner than later, change will be the least of their worries...in fact, it'd be welcome.
This series has some SERIOUS spookiness going on. After our introduction to Silas (~shudder~), I wasn't certain if the creepy factor would be turned down this time around. Quick word... it's not 😵‍💫 ... but neither is it turned up, leaving it enjoyable (with a light on) for Middle Grade fans and beyond. When the messages from beyond keep coming, and the potential for danger kept growing, they did what they did best, depend on the strength of their friendship, pull on their resources, and make it through the scary 😨 times to solve the mystery at hand. It's a tale to get drawn into, but not lost in because didn't you read my intro... SERIOUS SPOOKINESS! Keep a tether here, and let your imagination run wild to discover all the secrets within.
Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to... ETHAN FAIRMONT via Union Square Kids!
Greetings and salutations!
Today is another FANTASTIC release day, and while there are a plethora of titles I'd love to feature right here, right now, you're getting a glimpse at the latest duo I finished, of which the sequel just released! Excited? Well, you should be because it's not like a lot of other books out there, and it's a Middle Grade Sci-fi adventure to boot! Ready, set, let's get between the pages of today's books of choice...
(Book 1)
(Book 2)
Nick Brooks
Union Square Kids
Okay, so even though book two was the one releasing today, I really prefer starting a series at the beginning, hence the DOUBLE READ and DOUBLE REVIEW!  If you've already read the first book, congrats; you know what I'm about to expound upon.  If not, no worries...no time like the present!
In book one...we meet Ethan Fairmont.
DUN DUN DUNNNNNN
Okay, not really...I mean, we meet him, and his friends, family, the newcomers to town, and welcome back others that deserted him previously, but apparently had their reasons (which come out during the story).  But I digress...Ethan is an inventor, somewhat genius, and a middle grade friend.  He means well, but can tend to focus on himself a bit much at times in lieu of those around him...such was not the case when he came upon Cheese.  No, not cheese the food, but rather Cheese the little alien that appears in his designated workshop with his pinball ship and...oops.  Let me backtrack.  I told you from the start, these books are not exactly what they seem.  Ethan has more on his plate this summer than he imagined, but with the help of a new friend, and perhaps the aid of an old one, he'll get his chance to reach the stars...or at least help someone else reach them before it's too late!
In book two...we're back with Ethan and friends, but the trouble is not over!
Cheese may be gone, but that doesn't mean those seeking him...man, or...something else... have given up the trail...and that's only part of Ethan's problems.  He's getting ready for the school year, dealing with new friends and old, discovering his feelings for a one of those friends may have turned into something else, and battling his jealous side when he might not be the smartest one in the room.  OH, and yeah, trying to figure out how to make the shiny thing with the flower power that Cheese might have left him actually work!  Did I mention there are others on his trail?  Did I also mention it's not just others, but might be Others?  Yeah...danger ahead, my friends, DANGER AHEAD!
So I don't ruin the surprises because they are many, let me take another angle here.  The series has a science fiction bend I wasn't expecting, while at the same time exploring much more than the far reaches of space...and the invaders that might be among us!  (EEK!)  We tackle everyday topics like friendship, bullying, growing up, families, and the importance of STEM in the school curriculum, but also racial inequality, prejudice, and the journey to citizenship.  Some heavy hitters in that latter part too, and they don't spare the senses even with the Middle Grade genre it's written in.  It's not a bad thing, but rather a "me too" thing, allowing readers from various backgrounds to either see themselves, recognize the past, future or current world conditions that still need change, or simply get a new viewpoint on an issue that has and does exist to this day.  So yes, I was rather surprised by the content, but it melded entertainment with cultural education rather well, leaving room not only for the issues to be pointed out, but examined, all while witnessing the same for our otherworldly friends, AND entertaining us with a wild, and woolly tale that's out of this world.
A great add for your Middle Grade reading shelf, and an interesting selection perhaps for school reading with plenty of room for discussion.  Don't miss Ethan Fairmont's adventures...and be prepared for more to come!
Formats: Hardcover, Paperback, eBook
Pages: 280
Find it: Goodreads, https://books2read.com/THE-FALL-OF-THE-HOUSE-TATTERLY
Twelve-year-old Theo Tatterly’s ability to see ghosts is a useful skill in a house full of dead relatives, but it makes him a loner at school and everywhere else, where ghosts eternally pester him for help. For Theo, life is easier on the periphery. When his first failed exorcism portends an end to the Tatterly line, Theo must bring together his entire family—living and dead—to save the home they’ve lived in for generations . . . and maybe the world.
Author Shanna Miles’s story of magical modern-day Charleston crackles with unforgettable characters and pays homage to the city’s rich culture, folklore, and history.
Reviews:
“A richly detailed story that amplifies the importance of connections and community.”—Kirkus Reviews
"A spine-chilling stand-alone for readers who love the works of Eden Royce and Lora Senf." —Booklist
"Over-the-top fantastical ambiance, paired with rich depictions of Charleston’s historical and cultural lore, makes for an endearing, enchanting adventure teeming with quirky characters." - Publishers Weekly
Quickie review from my time between the pages...
...I really enjoyed this one!  From the super appropriate timing for release (it IS October, and all things with a SPOOKY tinge rule, and yes, this has it in spades!) to the family heritage shared (fascinating learning about a culture!), the bigger back story that allows you to really get into it to the characters themselves (both alive, and not so much!) that bring you along for the ride to the lessons learned along the way (such as asking for help is not a sign of weakness!), everything feels real, has that tangibility that only comes from great storytelling.
I really felt for Theo as he seemed so locked in by his "talent", but he handled it with hard earned maturity, and more responsibility than most adults could/would.  What he tried to do for the spirits left behind was commendable, even if he didn't always seek assistance where assistance was MORE than warranted.  Issa was also a curiosity to me...one of the scenes I remember most was the aquarium and how she charmed the sea animals seemingly without trying, and yet could be so easily taken over by a rogue spirit for better or worse.  It seemed she had two halves of a wicked powerful stone that didn't add up to much freedom either.  All of the Aunties leave their mark as well, but if I start listing them out, we'll be here all night.  My point is, the entire Tatterly family is remarkable in their own way, but they also remind us that that which makes them remarkable, whether asked for or not, comes at a price.  They were all too happy to "pay" it, but would YOU be?
Now, let's get into a little TOP FIVE action with the author herself as we tackle your favorite subject and mine...BOOKS!
~~~   GUEST POST   ~~~

Top 5 Books of Shanna Miles
with author Shanna Miles

I’m old enough to remember the Top 8 at MySpace. For all of you born in the new millennium, My Space, was a social network that rivaled Facebook and you had to curate a homepage that listed your top 8 friends on the site. It was a big deal to be on someone’s Top 8. The whole enterprise was anxiety inducing. Similarly, choosing my favorite books of all time is also a little nerve wracking. How can I choose just five? Will I feel the same about my choices a year from now and have to justify the change?

Given all that I won’t say that these are my favorite books of all time, but my favorite books today. My debut middle grades novel, The Fall of the House of Tatterly, is a fantasy set in Charleston, South Carolina. It features twelve-year-old Theo Tatterly, a boy medium who finds himself in a battle for his home and his soul when a centuries old demon rises from the grave. It’s spooky and fantastic and because of that I’ve got horror and fantasy on the brain. So here are my top 5 speculative fiction picks.

Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark

I had the privilege of being on a panel with the author this year and I was absolutely geeked out. Ring Shout was my favorite book of 2021. It’s about a rag tag group of zombie killers in Macon, Georgia during the 1930’s, and the zombie’s are klan members. Delicious!

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

This gem is set in a fictional town two hundred years after Cinderella’s death. Of course, she’s worshiped as some kind of quasi-goddess, because of course that would happen. The commoner becomes the queen? That’s a legend. But now , it’s bound all girls to the same kind of ritual, where they are chosen by men in their village with no choice and no escape. It’s fun, and queer and full of adventure. I love it.

Reverie by Ryan La Sala

This was something I loved because of the world building. Kane Montgomery was found unconscious in a river and he can’t remember why. That would be messed up enough, but when he’s dragged waking into these dream worlds with people who claim to be his friends, but feel dangerous, things get weird and in the best way.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

I love a book set in the South. Give me a heart to heart in a Waffle House and I’m sold. Grady is able to evoke the humid and haunting feeling of living in South Carolina, while also tossing in some pretty vicious vampires. He also allows older women to be the heroes, which doesn’t often happen in slasher stories.

Fiyah Lit’s Entire Catalog

Sometimes I can’t sustain the attention span to read something long. I may be drafting something new and I don’t want to take that long of a break so short stories are my go to. Fiyah Lit is a speculative fiction literary magazine that publishes short stories, non-fiction essays and poems. With a focus on afro-futurism I always find something new and refreshing.

BOOK BIRTHDAY WEEK Kid Lit Celebration!

What can I say?
I read A LOT.
I review A LOT.
I...sometimes run out of time (or mental energy!) to post everything in one day, but who doesn't want to extend the celebration? Am I right? 😉  Hence today's BOOK BIRTHDAY WEEK celebration post! We're doing it up KID LIT style with not one, but TWO titles that hit bookstore and virtual shelves this week, and I'm here to give you a bit of inside scoop!  In no particular order because they are equally amazing their own rights, make room on your TBR for today's featured titles...

Quest Kids, Book 2
by
Mark Lieknes
9781454946281
Union Square Kids

The Quest Kids are BACK and better than ever...or at least they will be once they get a grip on everything that's going down, especially this creepy, larger than life baby that is really giving them all pause when it comes to a fight!  But I digress...

When we last left this motley crew, they were still riding the high of finishing their first quest, but well on their way to starting their next.  You see, Ned's parents are MISSING, and while that's doom and gloomy enough, there's more spreading throughout the land, and someone needs to put a stop to it...or several someone's.  When you find out the who, what, why, and eventually where, you'll be perplexed, slightly confused, and maybe a little in awe as to the point of it all (especially surfing 🏄‍♂️ a wave of fire 🔥... sounds more like a human barbecue moment to me!), yet you still be in for a reading adventure filled with... well adventure, but also heart, friendship, revelations, and new mysteries to keep this quest group going for ages!

Like mysteries?
What about secret passages?
How about time honored traditions dating oh-so-far back in a place known for adults setting the rules, but this time, they have everything to do with the kiddos rules?
Thought that might grab your attention. 😉

The young ladies in this book,  Marissa and Clara, aren't bad kids, they're just not completely in love with their new lifestyle. I mean, taking a full entourage just to go to and from school? Climbing a tree with not a concerned parent looking on, but a security detail? See what I mean? So yeah, the life and times of the children in that great big house colored white, aren't exactly what you might imagine at times, but it doesn't mean it CAN'T be... 😏

All it takes is one secret panel opening, a slide down into a mysterious oval-shaped darkness, and signing your name on a parchment that's seen better days (or better yet, centuries!) to take things from ho-hum to what in the year 1905?! Explorations commence, a secret group that's not a secret amongst themselves is revealed, as is the task they need to complete in order to get back home! Trust me though, it's gonna take some intuition, investigation, and a lot of teamwork to get the job done... once they figure out WHAT exactly it is... but the rewards are more than just, as is the potential homecoming.

A great ride through history from a viewpoint that oftentimes gets overlooked with a message of never giving up the good fight!

Dare To Question: Carrie Chapman Catt’s Voice for the Vote
by
Jasmine A. Stirling

Union Square Kids

About the book...

Jasmine A. Stirling, author of A Most Clever Girl: How Jane Austen Discovered Her Voice, delivers a powerful, poetic picture book biography about suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, perfect for fans of I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark and the Rebel Girls series.

As a child, Carrie Chapman Catt asked a lot of questions: How many stars are in the sky? Do germs have personalities? And why can’t Mama vote? Catt’s curiosity led her to college, to a career in journalism, and finally to becoming the president of The National American Woman Suffrage Association. Catt knew the movement needed a change—and she set to work mobilizing women (and men) across the nation to dare to question a woman’s right to vote.

On August 18, 1920, Catt pinned a yellow rose to her dress and waited while lawmakers in Tennessee cast their deciding votes to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. After a seventy-year campaign, had women finally won the right to vote?

Stirling’s suspenseful retelling of the dramatic final “yea” that changed the history of women’s rights brings the past to life for young readers.

Dare to dream.
Reach for the stars.
Follow your heart.
All easy enough to say, but to do, now that takes guts... that takes persistence... that takes drive, determination, and a never-say-die-spirit...all things Carrie Chapman Catt had in spades, and it all started with a few questions.

That's right, questions.
She thought about things. She wondered about things. She felt things deeply, and fought for things strongly. She saw where change was needed, and went after that change. When the fight got hard, she went about it in new ways. When she was told no, she continued to pursue that yes, until one day, her message made it into the hearts and minds of enough supporters to turn a nation.

It's a wonderfully told story filled with illustrations that truly bring the past to life, while reminding us that change only comes about because someone decides to speak up. A great lesson for readers of all ages and stages in life, and a great addition to personal, public, and school libraries alike.
