Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to SOULMATCH by Rebecca Danzenbaker - REVIEW!

๐Ÿฅณ Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY to SOULMATCH by @rebeccadanzenbaker ... out today via Simon Teen!

About the book...
The Selection and Matched meet Scythe in this gripping, high concept debut YA novel.

Two hundred years after World War III, the world is at peace, all thanks to the soul-identification system. Every eighteen-year-old must report to the government to learn about their past lives, a terrifying process known as kirling.

Good souls leave the institute with their inheritance, a career path, and if they’re lucky, a soulmate. Bad souls leave in handcuffs. It’s a nerve-wracking ordeal for Sivon, who, given her uncanny ability to win every chess match, already suspects her soul isn’t normal. Turns out, she was right to worry. Sivon’s results stun not only her, but the entire world, making her the object of public scrutiny and anonymous threats.

Saddled with an infuriating and off-limits bodyguard, Sivon is thrust into a high-stakes game where souls are pawns and rules don’t exist. As deaths mount, Sivon must decipher friend from foe while protecting her heart against impossible odds. One wrong move could destroy the future lives of everyone Sivon loves, and she can’t let that happen, even if they’ll never love her back.

๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ’œ ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ’œ ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ’œ ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ’œ

Honestly, I was pulled in by the description, but I stayed for the content. It really does itself justice with the initial "for fans of" recommendation because I actually forgot about the mention of MATCHED, and that's what I was totally vibing on while I was reading. It brought me back to one of my first ARCs and the delicious way the story unfolded. It was slow, but not so much that you lost interest. Instead, that careful cantor served to lay the foundation for greatness ahead as you built relationships with the characters, and got tangled up in their lives... past, present, and potentially future. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's a fascinating concept with so many societal pluses and minuses to debate I won't even get into all that here, but rather I'll firmly recommend this title to you and then we can "battle" it out! ๐Ÿ™ƒ

REVIEW + GIVEAWAY starring... Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

We're heading back into the vivid world author Neal Shusterman created, once upon a time as we host a spot on the Rockstar Book Tours event rocking the blogosphere! It's a trilogy that was memorable, forceful, and action packed, creating a legion of fans that never knew what hit them, and would never forget all they learned, all the experienced, all they felt between those pages.  After finishing the final book, a reader can always go back to the start...but what if there was more?  What if we could dive further into the people, places, and events that shaped the books we loved?  Now THAT would be rather delightful...

GLEANINGS: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe

by Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofรญa Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman

RELEASE DATE:  November 8, 2022

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, Kindle, Audible, B&NiBooks, KoboTBD, Bookshop.org

The New York Times bestselling Arc of the Scythe series continues with thrilling stories that span the timeline. Storylines continue. Origin stories are revealed. And new Scythes emerge!

There are still countless tales of the Scythedom to tell. Centuries passed between the Thunderhead cradling humanity and Scythe Goddard trying to turn it upside down. For years humans lived in a world without hunger, disease, or death with Scythes as the living instruments of population control.

Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofรญa Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman—returns to the world throughout the timeline of the Arc of a Scythe series. Discover secrets and histories of characters you’ve followed for three volumes and meet new heroes, new foes, and some figures in between.

Gleanings shows just how expansive, terrifying, and thrilling the world that began with the Printz Honor–winning Scythe truly is.

Haven’t started the Arc of a Scythe series? Start your journey now!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So.
Here we are.
Back in the Scythe-dom and ready for action.
But...if you haven't indulged in the trilogy, I highly suggest you backtrack to the start.
What's that?
Oh, I get it...who am I to tell you what books to read, let alone in what order to read them?
No one.
Just a fellow reader that has been there, understood that, and still begs you to listen!
This is a collection of stories FROM that world.  If you don't have the foundation to add them into, you've got a 75% chance of being lost...and lost is somewhere you don't want to be when dealing with those who's job is to essentially keep the population in check...if you get my drift.  Here, fans get what they never knew they wanted, and yet craved in some way nonetheless.  We get to see Scythe Marie Curie as she navigates her new role, while be anything other than accepted by her peers.  We have the chance to experience the events on a certain "All Hallows Eve" night that changed many things.  We see the egos and artistry, watch the growth and decay, feel the tension and call to movement that may not be in anyone's best interests.  We are privy to so many new things we never knew to desire, and yet now, having them in our grasp, couldn't fathom the trilogy being without.
So yes, indulge in this book, but first binge read the first three to plunge yourself into this fascinating world where death is an artform, and the right to practice it, a privilege few will achieve.
October reading SPOOKTACULAR: Spooky reading fun for everyone!
Looking for something SPOOKY to add to your October MUST READ list? Here's a few titles to enchant, entertain, and spook-ify everyone in your reading group from the tall to the small! These are all titles I had the pleasure of indulging in recently, so take a look, and see what catches your fancy!
THERE'S A WITCH IN YOUR BOOK by Tom Fletcher (Randomhousekids)
A great book series in picture book and board book versions, tips one falls into the latter and let's readers of all ages get in on the SPOOKY season fun! With a call to interact on each page, it's more than storytime; is an experience.
THE MONSTERS ON THE BUS (Randomhousekids)
Okay, so it's definitely on the lighter side of the Halloween hubbub, but it DOES feature monsters, even if they are from Sesame Street! This all audience friendly board book gives us a new spin on the classic singalong song of yesterday, but plenty of smiles and silliness along the way.
POULTRYGEIST by Eric Geron (Candlewick)
I was actually surprised by this one! On the surface, it'll definitely bring some laughter and spooky fun for the kiddos. Between the illustrations, and the plucky turn of events by book's end, the old chicken that crossed the road never looked so enticing. Below the surface from an adult perspective, I was actually a little shocked by the beginning of the tale showing just how our lead chicken became a "geist"... and the persumed continuance of the story circle on the final pages. Again though, surface... kid friendly and funny!
LEILA THE PERFECT WITCH by Flavia Z Drago (Candlewick)
Remember Gustavo? Our little friendly ghost? Well Leila is from the same "series" and her richly illustrated tale brings the spooky-esque fun readers want this time of year, but with timeless lessons for all ages. Perfect is fine and dandy, but perfectly you is the best thing of all!
THE WITCH HUNT by Sasha Peyton Smith (Simon Teen )
Read THE WITCH HAVEN? If not, you've some catching up to do. Personal opinion, you need to read the first book in this series before diving into this one. It helps to know the back story, the connections, and all the feels you're stepping into with one... and trust me, there are feels! It was great catching up with the girls again, but oh my heart! I was torn this way and that by both fellas trying to decipher who was being genuine, honest, and there for our girl! Sometimes you have to do things by yourself, but a burden shared is a worry halved, and when a helping hand honestly exists, there is no harm in opening up and letting them in.
TRESSPASSERS by Claire McFall (Walker Books)
Though I loved all the books in this group, I think this one was one of my favorite! The first book was fantastic, and this second in the planned trilogy was amazing! All the feels, all the new experiences, all the unknowns, all the new souls, and the trouble that's followed them into what was suppose to be their HEA... oh my goodness, I couldn't get enough!
(happy tears!)
Special thanks to the publishers listed above for the copies for review and the chance to bring these titles to you!  (THANKS!)  For more information on any title listed, the authors, or the publishers, feel free to click on through the links above.  Be on the lookout for each at your favorite online retailer or local brick and mortar store to add some extra SPOOKINESS to your October reading!
From the #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Five Feet Apart comes a gripping new romance, perfect for fans of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.
Emily and her mum were always lucky.
But Emily’s mum’s luck ran out three years ago when she succumbed to cancer, and nothing has felt right since.
Now, the summer before her senior year, things are worse than ever – Emily has wrecked things with her boyfriend, Matt, and her dad is selling the house she grew up in and giving her mum’s belongings away. The only person she has to talk to is Blake, a girl she barely knows since she and her dad moved back to town five seconds ago.
But that’s when Emily finds the list – her mum’s senior year summer bucket list – buried in the back of her closet. When Blake suggests that Emily take it on as a challenge, the two set off on a journey to tick each box and help Emily face her fears over losing her connection to her mum. As she starts to feel closer to her mother, so too does Emily’s bond with Blake deepen into something she wasn't expecting.
And suddenly Emily must face another fear: accepting the secret part of herself she never got a chance to share with the person who knew her best.
A captivating, heartfelt love story about learning who you are, and who you love, when the person you’ve always shared yourself with is gone.
Praise for THE LUCKY LIST:
"A countdown to finishing the list before a class trip keeps the pacing solid, and an entertaining unraveling of connections to her parents’ pasts adds nice depth. Told in Emily’s first-person narration, the breezy tale explores the theme of learning to live life without holding back, as Emily both questions her sexuality and learns to heal from her grief....A truly charming summer romp." -- Kirkus Reviews
I was SO excited when I saw this book tour come around because I ADORED Five Feet Apart and simply couldn't wait to see what was in store for us.
Emily was a dear, but struggling so, so hard against, life, against, death, against her very sense of self, and all that fighting has wrung her life plum dry.  Her friends don't know what to say or do.  Her father can't carry on a conversation anytime his wife/her mother is mentioned.  To put it simply, her life is spiraling out of control...at least it was until Blake came along.  She's the ray of sunshine on a stormy cloud filled day.  She's the one you'd want to choose for your ride or die.  She's the new kid in town, but also a blast from the past, and while making waves in little ole Huckabee was never her intent, you can't fly under the radar when you come to a small town.  Thing is, outside all the exterior pluses, she's got a heart of gold, and it seems she's the one person that will not only listen to Emily, but wants to spend time with her and get her back out there, LIVING again.  But sometimes relationships are bigger than they at first seem, and when they grow out of our control, revealing things we weren't certain were hidden in the first place...you can get spooked, start making the wrong decisions, and ultimately break your own heart.  Let's hope that Emily is made of stronger stuff, and if by chance she's not, that she at least can pick up the pieces to start again.
Like I said, I really enjoyed this one from start to finish.  Meeting Emily in her lost state was refreshingly real.  Seeing her navigate life and times after a parent passes was hard, but you could see her honestly trying to struggle through.  The unintentional break from her crew wasn't timely, but it did afford her the chance to realign expectations, discover things that were there the whole time, and reconnect with not only her self, but her mom, believe it or not.  The whole list concept was a great way to have an impartial catalyst to get things moving, and the bond that it built, or rather solidified between mother and daughter, while bringing everyone else together, was pure magic.
