From getting laughed at by your crush to being stood up (twice!) by a guy with one eye, Bad Taste In Men showcases the humor and humiliation that accompanies the search for love (or at least "like") as a small-town teenage outcast, managing to wring heart-warming sweetness from angsty adolescent memories - and jokes about barf and poop.

Okay, I gotta say it, this was quite the read!

It takes us from childhood to womanhood in 350+ pages flat.  Its no holds barred approach to the narration of her life, leaves you bluntly in the middle of each scene as you try to make it out "alive".  How so?  Well, it's not truly your life that is threatened but your ability to read it with a straight face.  It's actually quite sweet AND funny!  From the start, we are treated to her mother's explanation of what it means to be gay, followed by a rousing laymen's terms look at childbirth.  If you manage not to laugh, chuckle, or at the very least smile at some point ....it'd be a miracle, but not to worry because you will!  Trust me.  ^-^

In conclusion, I was drawn to this book initially as much for the story as for the location (only an hour outside my hometown!); never hurts to place you a little closer to the happenings happening.  I'd recommend it's sassy nature for adult readers for the content as well as its freeness language wise.  To me, it's a fiction work that reads much like a nonfiction perfect for those not normally drawn to the genre.  It tells the story of a life well lived....but with color; something we can all use now and then.

About the author....

Lana Cooper was born and raised in Scranton, PA and currently resides in Philadelphia. A graduate of Temple University, she doesn't usually talk about herself in the first person, but makes an exception when writing an author bio. Cooper has written extensively on a variety of pop culture topics and has been a critic for such sites as PopMatters and Ghouls On Film. She's also written news stories for EDGE Media, a leading nationwide network devoted to LGBT news and issues. Cooper enjoys spending time with her family, reading comic books, books with lots of words and no pictures, and avoiding eye-contact with strangers on public transportation. Today, we are continuing our weekend at the movies with a book that may or may not be a good fit for a movie, HOWEVER, it sure does remind me of one, in a much less violent and graphic sense of course.  First things first, here comes the featured title of the day....

About the book....

Highschool-outsider Maja would never hurt herself on purpose as her dad, teachers, and classmates seem to believe. Can’t a person  saw off the tip of her thumb without everyone starting to worry? That is, everyone except Maja’s mum, who worringly seems to have disappeared from the face of earth.

Crashing a neighbour’s party, Maja meets twenty-year-old Justin Case, a super-verbal car mechanic with pink pants, who makes her forget everything about absent mothers and sawn-off thumbs, at least temporarily. But then Maja hacks into her father’s email account and reads an email that hurts more than all the electric saws in the world.

Now that we've become acquainted, let's dive into the realm of familiarity, or rather what movie this book reminded me of. 

In a few words, it was THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.  The writer of that novel was also Swedish (I believe...) and thus the film version was rather blunt.  It was bleak in its outlook, the characters took no prisioners while rarely if ever missing their target.  There is violence, though self inflicted and doubtful it was on  purpose. There is love...or at least the stirrings of.  There is deception as people try to hide things from the ones they love to protect them while in reality, it's making it worse.  There's a mystery to be solved that would be better left alone.  It has you running this way and that and quite frankly Maja's outbursts along the way just go about adding to the color of this already rainbow decked review.  

In short, an unusual read starring a young lady that would rather stumble and fall than depend solely on someone else.  When her "normal" life takes a detour, landing her smack dap at the center of a mystery, she may not start off prepared, but by book's end, she's got it all (mostly) under control and learns more about herself and her family than she ever intended.

Jenny Jägerfeld has worked in adult and young adult psychiatric care. She made her literary debut in 2006, and already her second novel, Me on the Floor, Bleeding was awarded the prestigious August Prize for Best Youth Novel in Sweden. Jenny Jägerfeld works with young adults through a long-running psychology program on Swedish national radio. Me on the Floor, Bleeding is her first novel translated into English.

Today's featured title is one that I'm officially taking a break from.  Sounds dire, right?  Well, think again.  First, let me introduce the little wordy wonder before it jumps from my shelf through the screen.

Okay, so here's the kicker.

I have yet to finish this book.

I've been reading this book in spits and spats for over a month.

I am putting this read on PAUSE...and my choosing that particular phrasing has a bigger meaning.

Now before you go fretting your little heads about how awful this book must be to cause me to NOT finish it, let me say this....it's not awful.  It is in fact curious and interesting albeit a bit crass and unusual.  The lead character's obsession with her four selves agreeing on the same guy (head, heart, hair, and other-regions) is a bit obtuse but a lovely dream to entertain.  Her resourcefulness in capturing said individual may lack imagination but it makes up for it in misleading tangents.

To put it bluntly....THIS WOULD MAKE A MUCH BETTER MOVIE THAN A BOOK.

Have you seen Bridget Jones' Diary?

Grant it, it's a book as well (no, I haven't read it yet...still on the "to-read" list) but let's focus on the film for a moment.  You know how the lead character over anaylizes everything, and basically the whole of the film is voiced over by her thoughts and inner jumbles?  THAT'S how this book reads....except all those random thoughts, jumbles, and ramblings take shape as words, and words, and words, and words, and...yeah, you get the picture.  To me, there's an over indulgence in letting her speak her mind and way too many detailed scenes  (never thought I'd say that).  For example on the latter part there, our leading lass goes on a drinking binge of all the English ales and such she can drink (and boy can she drink!).  Not only are we part and party to her scheming and buying, but the drinking of every last drop.  It's voyeristic in the degree of attention paid to every golden drops disappearance.

In the end, well...I guess I can't truly say in the end as I didn't make it there at this time....but some day, I shall return to her adventure and seek to understand her heart's desire and the path she's traveling to attain it.  Then again, maybe I'll wait for the movie because as I understand it, the author is writing the script as we speak.  *ponders*

Jennifer Harrison was raised in Tennessee, educated at the University of Tennessee, and recently moved from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area. She researches and writes grant proposals for nonprofit foundations and has worked as an editor for university professors, lawyers, journalists, and writers of fiction and nonfiction.

She also has extensive experience in the entertainment industry, working with musicians, actors, attorneys, and talent managers. Ms. Harrison’s first book was a memoir about the culture of a small Southern town in the 1950s and 1960s and her family’s relationship with neighbor Elvis Presley. Perverse Wonderland is her first novel.

Merry meet again!: House of Night: Redeemed by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast + CONTEST!

Welcome back to the site that loves the smell of printed words in the morning (or ANY TIME for that matter)....Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

So, as you may have heard, I've been on a self-imposed readathon due to the release of a particular final installment that came out this past Tuesday.  Perhaps you've heard of it?  Hmm...I do believe the series has the word NIGHT in it.  *smirk*  Anywho, with so many books (hadn't read a one before this challenge thought they DID reside firmly on my "to read" list) and so little time (even my JOB was impeding my progress....as in beyond the scheduled hours, lunch break was non-existent and thus 60 minutes of reading time a day, FLUSH down the drain. UGH!), my challenge...le sigh....fell a bit short.  Not to worry friends, I'll still continue to circle back and fill in the blanks but given the time I had, I'm still rather proud of the progress I made considering I had other books to read during the same time frame.  *pats self on back*  Let's see how I did AND catch up to where I managed to read through....

...here we begin discover just what our "chosen" fledgling is up against.  Nothing is as it seems.  Enemies become friends (some), friends become enemies, and trust is a hard commodity to come by but if you're dealing in secrets, you've struck GOLD!  I love how Zoe begins to connect even more with her Goddess.  I love how Aphrodite has changed and yet, hasn't.  I love how Stevie Rae....oh, wait....some of you reading this may not have read the book yet.  Ummm....forget I mentioned her.  *whistles*  Then of course there's the guy trio Zoe is having to sort out and if you think that juggling boyfriends is easy, think again....especially when you've Imprinted on one, are experiencing the first flutters of love with another, and are falling in lust with a more experienced vampyre (i.e. man).  Good grief!

UNTAMED

...now that some obstacles have been overcome, we're experiencing a heavy dose of CHANGE  Here we find out just what evil had been set in motion, the who that is pulling the puppet strings comes to light and just how close Nyx holds Zoe and her friends to her heart.  It's dangerous and dark yet beautiful and only the beginnig of the nightmares lurking ahead.  I was beyond tickled when the Benedictine nuns made an appearance, but I was biting my nails when Zoe's Grandma was injured  (*sob*).  The introduction of Stark was a curiosity, didn't see it coming nor was I completely convinced Zoe's connection with him was real (WAY TO FAST!) but having read other installments, I've come to accept it because trust me when I say, this isn't the last you'll be hearing from him.  Dun dun dun...

HUNTED

...at the end of the last installment, all you-know-what had broken loose and the gang were regrouping underground.  Now, there are choices to make, none of which are easy and most of which lead to trouble.  In this case, trouble begins with the reappearance of Heath and a near death experience for our leading lady which leads them all righ back into the clutches of evil.  ~shudders~  I mean, could you imagine returning to where everything began when those that ended the peaceful times are now ruling, oh wait, excuse me....creating chaosis and destruction?  Yeah, me neither but with the help of her friends (both old and new, red and blue), Zoe can take on the world....even those not of it.

I didn't know what to expect!  After having followed the gang so closely through the first five installments, I was eager to see just where my leap into their future would take me.  Boy was I in for a shock. 

Zoe in jail for murder?

A few members of her inner circle DEAD or missing?

Someone formerly in a position of evil now making moments with the Goddess herself?

One formerly aligned with good, turned to the darkness and now extracting what she feels are her rightful dues from those around her?

Whoa.

I was THRILLED TO BITS to see some of my favorites in one form or another (*ahem*...no comment).  I appreciated the final glimpse before book's close at the ever after for a few choice souls.  I loved knowing that Zoe had found love, cherished love, and was willing to give it all up to save the world in lieu of her heart.  She really grew into her powers (as they all do by book's end!) and though I've got to circle back to fill in a few blanks for myself, I felt it a satisfying end to what's been (thus far) a fabulous series.

Recommended read for fans of magic and mythology, those that live in the here and now as well as those that believe there is more out there than meets to eye.  It's a rush from start to finish with a lot of fun to be had outside of the doom and gloom.  Though it's rated Young Adult, I've also seen it housed in the Adult section at my own local library (thinking it's purely due to the steamy scenes)....so readers of both genres are welcome to join the rabid fan base and expect delicious results.

 Why I Wrote This Book

Writing The Unholy was motivated by my work treating survivors of the dark side of religion for over thirty years.  The dark side of religion generates a shame-based spirituality, and when people experience the dark side of religion their unconscious minds are profoundly violated. Rather than writing a self-help book for people who have encountered the dark side of religion, I decided to write a novel because images and symbols in fiction affect the unconscious mind in ways that information in nonfiction does not; they move straight into the unconscious mind, while information in nonfiction self-help books stays on the level of the conscious mind. Only by accessing healing images and symbols at the level of the unconscious mind, such as through stories like The Unholy, do people who have been injured by the dark side of religion begin to heal. And as they heal, they are able to free themselves from the effects of a shame-based spirituality and instead embrace a soul-based spirituality.

This is definitely one for the bigger fans of Fantasy reads so if you're looking for dragons, magic, and danger, you've come to the right book. As for me, I like mine a bit more on the light side of the F scene so your take may not be exactly the same as mine. No worries! That's the beauty of reading. So, let's take a look at...

THE BIGGEST WINS FOR ME IN THIS BOOK

The way the powers manifest....pretty creepy AND cool!

I love how the color aspect of them was explained too. It wasn't simply RED standing for the FIRE element, for example; it was about the intent of the individual. In other words, steer clear of those wielding RED! *-*

The pricklescrinch is an ODD little creature to say the least. How on earth it it able to bring forth emotions from an individual without them even realizing the manipulation is beyond me not to mention the fact that it pretty much replicates itself and can regenerate a leg (a LEG no less!) at a moment's notice. Talk about self preservation!

The noticeable differences between the bother sister duo made for some interesting situations for them both. Where Halywen was all about doing the right thing in her own way (quite a creative one as well with LOADS of heart), Cadarn had a tendency to take risks and be led by his anger (hello fire boy...weren't you trying to FIX the destruction not add to it?).

Last but not least...DRAGONS!

Oh come on...you gotta love dragons! Even if you're not a huge Fantasy fan (*raises hand*), you can't help but love the balance of power and majesty they represent in pretty much EVERY story they dwell within.

So, in conclusion....though it didn't ring many of my bells, it doesn't mean that it won't be a huge with with YOU! As I said, fan of Fantasy? TAKE NOTE! Simply a passing fancier of otherworldly places, people and things? Perhaps not. Being as this is a sequel, I do suggest reading the first book, well....first. I do believe it may help lay the groundwork a smidge better whichever reading camp you stake your tent in.

Merry Meet at the House of Night!

Hiya guys and gals!

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place to be when the reading bug strikes....HARD!

So, for those frequent visitors to the site, you may be wondering why I've been a bit more silent recently.  I mean, a new post every day was sorta my thing...until this month.  Reason?  I've been embarking on a self imposed READ-A-THON!  That's right!  As you may have heard (on Twitter!), I'm hosting a spot on an uber huge blog tour later this week for a little Young Adult series you may have heard of...called....the HOUSE OF NIGHT.

If you're a fan of the series, then you know the OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE for the FINAL INSTALLMENT is TOMORROW....that's Tuesday, October 14th.  If you've had it on your to read list, (*raises hand*), NOW is the time to get on board the fan train because it's leaving the station and guess what?  I'm a PASSENGER!  Yep.  Now, time for me is an issue so I didn't go into this challenge lightly.  Thus far, I've read ONE, TWO and almost all of THREE.  Still have several thousand pages to go before my Friday due date...no pressure...but in the mean time, forgive the silence.  To break up the crickets, I've decided to break my all-in-one series review post into a few smaller ones followed up with the grand finale.  So....ready to READ ALL ABOUT IT?  Here we go!  Pack your bags and prepare to get some pretty rad tats, today's BOOKS of choice by P.C. and Kristin Cast follow....

MARKED

(Book 1)

Meet Zoey, high school student with boyfriend, bestie, and fairly decent popularity ranking with the masses.  Sounds like a great place to be, right....well it WAS; then she had to go and get herself marked.  In all fairness, you don't decide to BE marked; you are selected because something inside you makes itself known to the local vampyre trackers and BOOM.  The rest is history.  Once marked, you have two choices:  die...or move into the House of Night.  Let's see...if we weigh the pros and cons...what am I sayin'!  Of course people would choose the latter, that is if their families allow them.  Yeah....let's just say that while Zoey's mom was fab once upon a time, when her happily ever after part two came about, she fell prey to a stronger mind...though its depths were MUCH much shallower.  Anywho, anywho....

Zoey has a whole new world to deal with and a whole new Goddess' favor to be bathe in, but with a little help from her friends (and her spunky grandmother), she just might make it through.  Maybe.  Sorta.  Okay, if she can stay away from the uber-witch-with-a-b Aphrodite and her minions (no, they aren't the cute little yellow ones), gain control of her thirst, and handle the new powers and responsibilities (hello Daughters of Darkness!) coming her way.  No sweat....right?

BETRAYED

(Book 2)

I had a fun time sorting out the title of this one.  My first thoughts were....WHO would be doing the betraying?  Would it be Zoey to her friends, her mentor, or the student body (including one student's body in particular)?  Would it be her friends, her mentor, or the student body betraying HER?  So many ways for it to go and so much loss to suffer along the way regardless.  Yes my friends, we lose an integral part of her circle in this read and if you don't find yourself seriously touched (or brought to tears ... *raises hand*), you may want to check your pulse.  You turn the final page wiser with a better understanding of the new world she's inhabiting...but also WARY.  Betrayed was an appropriate title for this one indeed...

On a general note, if you're new to the series, you won't miss EVERYTHING by picking it up somewhere along the way.  The authors are pretty good about catching you up at the beginning of each book and along the way when the time is right.  Nice touch!  So, my fair readers....stick with me and join in the HOUSE OF NIGHT fun as it takes over the blog (most of) this week.
