PRE BOOK BIRTHDAY BUZZ: Coming Up for Air by Nicole B. Tyndall - REVIEW!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're shining the late night book spotlight on a title set to celebrate its BOOK BIRTHDAY this Tuesday via Delacorte Press, an imprint of Penguin Random House. It's a NEW Young Adult title that deals with some pretty heavy topics, doesn't sugar coat, and yet still reminds us that we're never truly alone, if only we'll reach out a hand. Ready or not, here comes today's book of choice...

About the book…
Ever since her mom’s cancer scare, Hadley hasn’t been one for taking risks. And after seeing her sister go through one too many heartbreaks, she definitely has no interest in dating. Hadley just wants to keep her head down and enjoy the rest of high school with her friends, focusing on her photography and getting into the art school of her dreams.

Then enters Braden, star of the swim team and precisely the kind of person Hadley avoids, all bravado and charm and impulsivity. From their first moment together, they are perfect sparring partners, equally matched. And it’s intoxicating. Braden sees her, really sees her, and Hadley decides it might be time to break all her rules.

Braden shows Hadley how to live again, and soon Hadley is happier than she’ll ever admit out loud. But that’s before her family is faced with devastating news, and Braden starts hiding a growing, dark secret. As it threatens to shatter everything they’ve built, Hadley must confront her own actions and determine if she has the strength to walk away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Figuring out the meaning behind the title is half the fun. Coming Up for Air was such an easy one, or so you might think, considering the main leading male is a swimmer. Ah, but then you’d be judging things a bit too quickly…
Coming Up for Air comes into play SO MANY times in this novel, I'd almost lost track. First, the obvious one we mentioned because at some point, they do have to do that actual action. Second, it applies to Braden yet again in a life sense. Ever been told you take things too seriously? Yeah, well that was him and the swimming. I mean I get it...it was him working towards his goal of a scholarship based on his athletic talent; a totally worthy goal to say the least. The problem lies in that his focus was so laser, so single oriented that when things start messing with that direct path, he's not prepared to swerve. He takes on SO much and keeps holding his head high, so that while yes it looks like he's breathing easy, he's actually been holding his breath the whole time.
Then we have it in a life sense for our girl, Hadley. She's definitely been treading water, what with her family dealing with her mother's diagnosis and treatment. Add to that college entries, the current school year, and her new boyfriend, Braden. Yeah, okay spoiler alert there, but it's not really because it's pretty much the first thing that happens after we're introduced to the PRESENT and then the PAST. Anyway, why would she need to be coming up for air...especially in the last scenario. Ever get lost in someone? I mean to the point where we don't know where you end and they begin? Yeah, it hits our girl hard, the love bug that is, but there's something else. His problems become her problems and she feels guilty, as if she added to his problems, and that just snowballs from there until it all falls apart, rather spectacularly, and heartbreakingly all at the same time.
So you see, the titles applies several times over and in many ways, but in the end, they all add up to taking a moment in your life to actually BREATHE. It's never too late to change course, and the bumps in the road or rough water we encounter are meant for us to grow from and overcome, but if ever they feel like TOO much, there's no harm in reaching out for a helping hand. In the end, the story kept me pulled in,while the heady topics came as somewhat of a surprise, but I have to admit, as dark as some things get, I appreciated the way the author handled a topic so large and yet so meaningful.
About the author...
How the moose (almost) stole Christmas.
Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can’t stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana’s determined to prove that she belongs…even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town’s hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.
And really…how hard could it be?
The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it’s not getting any easier now that his dream girl’s back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it’s clear she needs help, fast…and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It’s an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong…together.
RRR presents... TEMPTED BY THE TYCOON'S PROPOSAL by Rachael Stewart - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we’ve teamed up with Rachel’s Random Resources for a stop along their current tour featuring a NEW RELEASE title from Mills and Boon/Harlequin. It’s a Contemporary Romance that really tugs at the heartstrings, and I fell in love with it so much more than I imagined I would! So get ready, get set, and grab your wish list because this is one title Romance fans are not going to want to miss! Now taking center stage, today’s blog tour guest and ebook of choice…
by
Rachel Stewart
Mills and Boon
About the book…
A second chance…
With the single dad?
When hotelier Sophia Lambert finds billionaire Jack McGregor’s runaway daughter, a thank you dinner sounds harmless. Until Sophia finds herself tantalizingly attracted to Jack… The deeply desirable single dad re-awakens long-buried emotions in Sophia, but his jet-set life is beckoning. Unless Sophia can tempt him with her own proposal: to keep his feet on the ground…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Oh my heart!
If you had told me I would be as besot with this story as I was/am, I’d have quirked an eyebrow, but still carried on reading.

Sophia and Jack were right for each other for all the wrong reasons, or at least they seemed wrong to them, and though the timing wasn’t perfect in either of their lives, THAT’S how love is...or so I’m told! It comes along when you least expect it, and my golly, these two SO DID NOT expect it. We go from Sophia finding the lost little girl (who wasn’t really lost, merely sating her desire to reach the stars!) to her being walloped by the instant connection she feels with the father (our man Jack), fielding dinner invites and play dates to sorting out exactly what they want from each other versus what they need and what they feel they can actually give! Then there’s Jack who is yes, a billionaire, but it didn’t come easy and the hours are long...seemingly TOO long for a normal life, and so he’s turned off that part of himself, turned away from any closeness that could infringe on his two main focuses in life...his daughter and his business...but there’s no turning away from what he feels for Sophia, and to him, that’s a problem. Oh and did I mention they are both carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders for things that were never truly their fault? Yeah, that too...is it any wonder that neither was looking to engage...and yet...fate does like to get her kicks.

Speaking of kicks, fate, and characters you can’t forget, can we step away from the potential love story for a second and talk about Lilly? Yeah, Lilly is the precocious, precious, and utterly tuned in five-going-on-six-going-on-twenty year old that is Jack’s daughter and not only is she the apple of his eye, she’s the real sweetheart of the story! It’s her infatuation with the heavens that created the meet-cute between her father and Sophia. It’s her innocent request for Sophia’s company that creates the next meeting that can’t be turned down. She plays an integral part of bringing them together...and unfortunately breaking them apart (so not her fault)...and seeing her grow from content world traveler to a little girl enjoying the perks of being just that, a little girl...was truly magical.

So, in the end, it was a sweet romance with just enough heat to keep things rolling, but oh so much heart that you won’t be able to turn away from the page!

About the author…

Rachael Stewart adores conjuring up stories for the readers of Harlequin Mills & Boon and Deep Desires Press, with tales varying from the heartwarmingly romantic to the wildly erotic.

She's been writing since she could put pen to paper as the stacks of scrawled on A4 sheets in her loft will attest to, and the lovingly bound short stories that her father would run off at work and proudly share out with his colleagues. Thinking it was a pipe dream to be published one day, she pursued a sensible career in business but she was really play-acting, achieving the appropriate degree and spending many years in the corporate world where she never truly belonged. Always happiest when she was sat at her laptop in the quiet hours tapping out a story or two. And so here she is, a published author, her full-time pleasure, a dream come true.

A Welsh lass at heart, she now lives in Yorkshire with her husband and three children, and if she's not glued to her laptop, she's wrapped up in them or enjoying the great outdoors seeking out inspiration.

Becoming Alfie
by
Neil Patterson

About the book...

Almost killed by a trench bomb he battled to recover and while in a military hospital Alfie made a promise that dramatically change’s his life. A true East End hero, Alfie begins his journey away from poverty armed with a robust moral compass and an open heart.

Becoming Alfie is the first in the Alfie Norrington series. It follows the life of a man who positively influenced thousands of people. The world needs more individuals like Alfie Norrington, that give much more than they take.

~~~   EXCERPT   ~~~
Hello Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers. I hope you enjoy the following snippet from Becoming Alfie.
The following appears in chapter three and the year is early in 1916. It describes Alfies two lovable sisters and their life at the time along with brother Fred who is fighting from the trenches in Flanders.
The girls were now almost eighteen years of age and had become exceptionally beautiful young women. Alfie was very proud of both twins and loved to hear the stories they told about their work. Both worked out of the West Ham tram depot as “conductresses”, a term they both came to like. They had been with the West Ham tram corporation for two years and enjoyed the interaction with passengers, particularly young men – who were quite rare as, sadly, many were fighting for King and Empire across the channel in France and Flanders.
What the girls didn’t like about their jobs on the maroon-and-cream-liveried trams were two things: cleaning the trams at the end of the day, and the dirty old men who pinched them on their bums. This happened on the odd occasion and the retribution brought down on the offender was a sight to see. Lily simply slapped the reprobate hard across the face and growled: “If you ever touch me again…”, leaving the threat hanging perfectly in the air, while her scary eyes pierced the soul of the perpetrator. Other passengers would look away awkwardly; the culprit always attempted to sink into his embarrassment, and on some occasions, leave the tram at the next stop.
In Rose’s case, she would go at least one step further, announcing to all the passengers, “I have just been touched in a private place by this ’orrible man. He’s probably someone’s dad, or someone’s ’usband, maybe someone’s son. What would they think of this dirty bastard right now?”
This encouraged the other passengers, who would offer advice: “Kick him off the tram!” “Report him to the Old Bill!” “Do you want me to punch his face in?”
Going back to the now highly embarrassed offender, Rose would lean forward and almost whisper into his ear: “Now fuck off, get off the tram, and I never want to catch sight of you again. If you don’t go at the next stop, I’ll make a scene and this lot will give you a right old kicking. Go on, piss off now!”
This dramatic technique always worked, as both girls regularly talked about this very situation and when they shared their responses with Alfie, he found it hilarious. They had refined their differing but effective skills over the ensuing two years so that, by now, they weren’t intimidated by the bum-pinchers.
With the money they earned, both girls liked to look even more beautiful at the weekends.  They attracted many would-be suitors. Every weekend the pair would get dolled up, select boys to go out with, and go dancing or to the movies. The blokes in tow were often injured soldiers or retained workers. Lily and Rose were never short of male company. They loved to dance; Rose had a favourite, the turkey trot, with Lily favouring the bunny hop. On a few occasions they were invited up to a club in the West End that was very posh and very colourful. It was as if people were dancing for their lives – most knew the British troops were in trouble, possibly losing the war that could be over by Christmas.
Both girls were doing their best to enjoy life in very trying circumstances and succeeding. Neither was properly courting and neither intended to. It was about living for today, as tomorrow may never come.
Fred, meanwhile, was running around the trenches of Flanders and writing regularly to Alfie. Fred asked him to keep the contents of his letters under his hat, to which Alfie complied. For two years he had escaped the ravages of war in a physical sense, but his nerves were shredded with each new call to go “over the top”, and with each and every German shell that rained down on the front-line troops. Fred had become dependent upon his and others’ rum rations: a daily allowance of a thick, rich rum, one sixteenth of a pint per man, per day. He was suffering from war neuroses. Fortunately, there were quite a few teetotallers in his battalion, so Fred kept himself topped up most days and his rattling nerves would be soothed.
Some days, though, he struggled to quiet his demons when the supply of rum rations didn’t make it through the lines. Those days would become Fred’s private hell. He felt everything in a horrific, magnified way. He saw rivulets, rivers of his mates’ blood running red through the sodden trenches, amplifying his fears. Add the noise of the German mortars and shelling and the dreadful screams of the injured out in no man’s land, and Fred was left quivering, frightened, terrified even of his own shadow.
He was forever on edge, and while what he felt was unbearable, his shame meant he couldn’t share what he was going through with his mates. He often considered going over the top, as death became more and more attractive compared to the immense pain he felt. Was he weak? Was he really as useless as his sergeant kept telling them all as they dug trenches, or during the morning hate when, at 4 a.m. every day, each soldier fired off twenty rounds towards the German positions, just to let them know they were still there?
The task Fred found the most difficult came at nightfall, after a push or a particularly active day: the retrieval of the dead and dying. Over they would go, fearful the German sentries would spot them while they helped the injured retreat to the safety of their trenches. Then, once more, they would go over, this time to drag bloody and disfigured corpses back to British lines. Often the dead Tommies were friends or close acquaintances, and on most occasions Fred was pleased it was them, not him. But on those days the supply corps failed to deliver the rum, Fred most certainly wished to trade places with his dead companions. They were now pain-free, while he was anything but.
 About author Neil Patterson...
Born in South Essex close to the River Thames and directly East of London, my childhood was peppered with memories of the mighty river itself.
We would swim, fish and discover hidden treasure in the tidal mudflats with the fragments of clay pipes we found taking us back to another era. It was here that my inspiration for writing was born. I began to keep a diary of my observations from life and documented my feelings and thoughts.
My wife was twenty two and I was twenty four when we migrated to Australia with a glorious expectation. The sun was shining, the people were friendly and Sydney Harbour simply magnificent. Together we were committed to making the most of this opportunity beginning the next step in our lives. Everything was new which gave me endless writing opportunities that I recorded in my diary which had spilled over into a number of books. We travelled around this incredible country meeting people from all walks of life and from many nationalities. We lived and worked in a variety of capital cities enjoying each and every experience. All this was tremendous fodder for my writing.
I began to write short stories and poetry, none of which I sought to publish. By my fifty second birthday I was able to finish working and focus full time on my writing, the results so far are The Alfie Norrington Series with Becoming Alfie the first in the series of four. I hope that you enjoy reading Becoming Alfie as much as I did writing it.
A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem: THE FINAL GAMBIT by Christopher Healy - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're bringing you the THIRD and FINAL INSTALLMENT of the ever fabulous series entitled A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem by the ever fabulous Christopher Healy from the ever fabulous team at Walden Pond Press!  Did I mention that it's FABULOUS?  Oh, good...because THAT was exactly my aim!  If you've been with us for the first two installments, you're well on your way to brimming over with EXCITEMENT to find out just what DANGER the Peppers and friends are getting themselves into, out of, and around this time around, not to mention so very curious to see if Rector reappears, Molly, her mom, and the MOI get their day, and whether Robot remains the ever loving surprisingly memorable character he was.  If you're NOT familiar with the series, then the last REALLY LONG sentence didn't mean that much memory wise, but I'm sure it sparked your curiosity at the very least.  Am I right?  GREAT because we're not putting the breaks on this runaway train until we're finished, and right now, we're clearing the stage for today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...
A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem, Book 3
by
Christopher Healy
Walden Pond Press
About the book...
The thrilling conclusion to Christopher Healy’s funny, action-packed, acclaimed alt-history adventure!
It is 1884, and Molly and Cassandra Pepper,
Emmett Lee, and Emmett’s long-lost father are sailing back to New York following their death-defying adventure in Antarctica. Having discovered a subterranean world at the South Pole while saving the world from certain doom once again, surely their accomplishments will finally earn them the recognition they deserve.
Unless, of course . . . well, you know by now.
And so do the Peppers and Lees. They’re used to having
their deeds covered up by the government in order to
protect powerful men, and frankly, they’re sick of it. And
when their return to New York doesn’t go the way they’d
planned, they decide that maybe it’s best to go into hiding
and accept that, perhaps, the forces aligned against them are just too great.
As the 1884 presidential election approaches however, our heroes discover a plot against leading candidate Thomas Edison that only they can stop. It’ll be up to them to decide whether to come out of hiding, make the perilous journey to Washington, D.C., and do the right thing one last time. Even if it means risking everything they have left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a FABULOUS way to say adieu to a series that has taught us so much, entertained us to no end, and both broken and mended our hearts a million times over.  The Peppers and the Lees are remarkable, the ladies of the MOI (Mothers of Invention, for those not already in the know) are inspiring, Rector abysmal, but you have to give him credit for tenacity (and that goes for Agent Clark as well!), Dr. Stinkums who was an unexpected new addition to the group (and a actual genius in doggy form!), and Robot whom one wouldn't think could be but was the heart of them all.  There is so much to love here and only so much space on my post (at least before I bore you to tears because I keep going and going and...well, you get the picture), but I will try to sum it all up.

This adventure will take our motley crew turned family across the globe.  From Antarctica to the high seas, Florida to New York, a great hidden place you wouldn't think of to Washington to another place you wouldn't think of to...well, they globe trot, that's for certain, and in some very creative ways, and always for a good reason which usually ends up with them trying to save the population from the likes of the diabolical mastermind (Rector) with no one in power believing them until it's much too late.  *deep breath*  Anyway...Molly and Emmett take the helm in this one and while yes, they get into trouble, A LOT, they have a plan to follow, and their hearts to guide them...because seriously guys, no one listening to their minds only would undertake the dangers and perils they do!  They could've just said no.  They could've ignored the signs.  They could've said I'd rather live this quiet life and not run from danger, agents, and everyone else since I'm now on the most MOST wanted list, thank you very much....but they didn't.  They CHOSE to do the right thing.  They used their hearts and their minds to figure out the troubles they get into.  They reinvent the wheel, if need be, to get the job done, and they never give up on each other.  Oh yes, times get SERIOUSLY tough, and they may want to put down their burdens and say no more, but they are there for each other and pull each other up when down, never letting the odds win against them.

So to summarize my summary, it was a wild and crazy adventure filled with danger, peril, and heart.  It showed us that anyone can do anything they put their heart and mind to, we CAN in fact choose our family, and just because one doesn't have an actual heart that beats, it doesn't make them any less human.  If you're looking for adventure or even to simply be inspired, this is the series for you!  Oh and don't worry, I won't tell anyone if you're just getting started in it...that just means you get read straight through without any of the wait time for the next adventure.  (Woot woot!)

About the book...
Enjoy a down-home Texas cowboy Christmas!

When handsome town sheriff Derrick Shelton meets Angelique Guillory and her young daughter at the Garrett ranch, he is immediately drawn to the woman who seems to desperately need a true family Christmas. Determined to erase the shadows from her eyes, he decides to give her the best holiday she’s ever had.

Angelique Guillory is a woman with a past, haunted by violence and searching for the family she never knew. When she and her little daughter find their way to the Garrett family and meet Derrick, she hopes to have finally found a safe haven.

But Angelique is still looking over her shoulder. Despite her doubts, with a little Christmas magic and the warmth of the Garretts, Angelique may find more love and acceptance than she ever thought possible.

June Faver loves Texas, from the Gulf coast to the panhandle, from the Mexican border to the Piney Woods. Her novels embrace the heart and soul of the state and the larger-than-life Texans who romp across her pages. A former teacher and healthcare professional, she lives and writes in the Texas Hill Country.

I am so happy to share one of my favorite cookie recipes. I wrote a cookbook for my family to preserve several generations of our favorite family recipes. I usually make the cookies at night and wake up to this great fragrance throughout the house. You mix them up, pop in the oven, turn off the oven and leave them until morning. Enjoy.
