Right from the start, I knew I was going to love Joan. She's got the weight of the world on her shoulders from losses she felt were her fault, and yet she's learned to manage them. She's got physical limitations that would cripple many from the sheer magnitude of what they could become, but she's come to terms with them, and in fact, has learned to embrace everything else she has. There's no wounded maiden calling out for a hero, but rather a feisty young maiden determined to do what she needs, nay what she desires, in spite of the fact that the world thinks she should simply just accept things as is and let them be. I admire her strength of character, her outlook on life, and, even in her darkest times, her desire to help others without a drop of pity focused on herself. Sir Warin was another story...

Okay, so not so much another story as another soul that I knew I was going to root for! Yes, he was stubborn, but he's a man of mystery carrying out plans to undermine those that would harm the crown (and more), so who could really blame him. Yes, he's boarded up his heart, but again, consider his history and the family that he once had that is no more...you'll sooner shed a tear, than shun him for his precautions. Yes, he's a man's man...but not so much that he's willing to override Joan in her attempts to do what she wants to do. He sees her more clearly than he sees himself, and vice versa, a task that is no easy feat...and also speaks to the thawing of his icy heart. In truth, it was more battered than iced, because his actions and words spoke volumes about his character long before he was ready to admit defeat in this matter of the heart.

Suffice it to day that it was a wonderful trip back to Medieval times that this reader enjoyed wholeheartedly. Their witty repertoire, their growing friendship, their ability to depend on each other, and even their keen observations into the other's heart, all go toward making a potential couple you'll want to keep tabs on, as the drama unfolds all around them. Don't get me wrong, it's not JUST about their would-be relationship, but then again...it's not NOT about it either!

Thank you, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers, for hosting me today for a guest post on your blog! I’m so excited to be here to celebrate the release of my latest Harlequin Historical/ Mills & Boon book, The Lost Laird from Her Past, which is book two in the Falling for a Stewart series.

As a writer, I’m often asked about my writing process, so I’d thought I’d share with you five things about my writing process that you may not know with you today:

I am a pantser through and through. I know and understand people that can plot a novel all the way through before starting it, but that has never been my process. Even when I attempt to plot my books, the story always changes as I write each chapter and my characters start to have their own way in the story!

I write my novel out of order. Although I always “see” or envision the first scene of the first chapter first of each book I've ever written, the rest of the chapters come to me sporadically and not in a linear fashion at all, since they come to me out of order. I tend to have to go back and edit chapters, and then I piece them back together.

Music is a huge part of my inspiration. I create playlists for my characters and use music as inspiration for different chapters and scenes in each book. I will often pick out images of characters and places as well and put it into what might be called a book “dreamboard” or a book “moodboard.”

I edit from the end of the book to the beginning. This is one of the best pieces of writing advice I've ever been given from a fellow writer. After I finish my book, I edit it from the end to the beginning so that I can better see and address any inconsistencies in characters, scenes, or plot lines.

I also listen to my book several times as I write and edit chapters. One of the only ways I can catch errors when I write is to listen to the scenes and chapters using the “read aloud” feature on my laptop. It also helps me to hear repetitious words and odd sounding dialogue. It doesn't catch everything, but it catches a lot!

Okay, so I'm being a bit dramatic, but how would YOU feel if your bestest little fur friend couldn't enjoy summer to its full extent, by your side, because he simply wasn't built to swim? Yeah, you'd be upset, but the thing is...Gus insists that he CAN swim, and won't hear anything to the contrary. Even when he ends up underwater a time or two after stubbornly cannonballing into the water as fast as his little legs could carry him. The thing is...no one is really wrong in this conversation. Bean knows what she knows, and Gus knows what he knows, and yet we as readers are about to see just how far fact and belief can really take you when combined.

OMG guys, if the story wasn't enough for you, the characters are a perfect match for the tale being told, not to mention the GORGEOUS illustrations throughout! There's nary a page that you turn where Bean isn't trying to find a solution to the problem, or Gus isn't grumbling away about how he can, in fact, do anything. You'll smile, chuckle, and learn a thing or two along the way...as will Gus, but we won't point that out to him because seriously, by book's end he's enjoying himself FAR too much to distract!

She was sinking, drowning in the taste of him, the feel of him.

Her mind tapped incessantly, reminding her she needed to put a stop to this. But her body, like a beast stretching and panting beneath her skin, urged her on.

Her mind rallied, pushing against her body’s wants.

“Blaise,” she said, gasping as he kissed a trail down her neck while gripping one of her thighs and wrapping her leg around his waist. Well, she did all the wrapping, having to stand on her tiptoes. Even through her denim shorts, the swell of him pressing against her sent a jolt of energy directly to the spot that hadn’t stopped aching since he last touched her.

Her mind was going to lose the battle.

Thunderous footsteps outside the door brought the world crashing back around them. Blaise seemed to realize where they were, too, and rested his forehead against hers.

“We still haven’t talked,” she said, sucking on her swollen lower lip.

“Is it because I’m a wulfin?”

Reina laughed. Her entire body shook and Blaise rewarded her with a growl, the movement and their intimate posture reminding her they really needed to talk. About several things.

That reason probably should have crossed her mind, but it hadn’t. She kissed him on the cheek and stepped back. “No.”

He took a half-step back as well. The breath went out of her as she looked at him, his wicked grin and intense eyes burned like silver stars, asking her a question that the throbbing in her body was desperate to answer.

And his dimples. “Me being a wulfin hasn’t put you off. You haven’t run away screaming from me, my family, or Alek. What’s there to talk about?”

She had no words. Before, she wanted to talk about whatever it was that smoldered between them and whether they should douse the flames or throw gasoline and a torch upon them. She chewed her lip, the words not forthcoming. Now was not the time.

How to Use Children's Books to Teach Kids About Space and Science

When my daughter was two years old, we made her first banana bread in the kitchen. I remembered watching her smell the mashed bananas, pinching the flour with her tiny fingers, and putting sugar crystals in her mouth. While making the banana bread, all of my daughter's senses were engaged in the experience, and she was naturally excited and curious. When children immerse themselves in activities and use all of their senses to gather information for learning, they are learning by experience. Experiential learning is my go-to learning method with my children. Unfortunately, I can't apply this method when teaching about space. Therefore, the ability to learn about space is somewhat limited as we cannot experience it entirely with all our senses. An alternative is to use books. So how do I use books to teach my children about space?

I use books with pictures for my children. Children understand words through the illustrations, which connect the book's images and words on the page. Depending on the child's age, it also helps transfer knowledge from the book to the real world. My children, like most children, are naturally attracted to colorful images, which helps to keep their attention.

I try to find books about space that are relatable to children. As children observe the sky, they cannot see out of space, so the idea of space can be very challenging for young children. A suitable book should include the Sun or the Moon because children can see them. Children also experience the light from the Sun and the Moon. After introducing my daughter to the Sun and the Moon, it was easy to move onto the planets.

I look for books that convey learning through a story. Children love stories, which is a fantastic way to educate them. Stories ignite a child's imagination, build excitement, and keep them curious. I introduced space to my daughter with a similar story to The Sun Plays with the Moon, and she looked at the sky for a long time. I remember the days she would excitedly wake me by saying, "Mom, the Sun has pushed the Moon; wake up." A book with a rhymed story is even better. Children enjoy reading rhymed stories because they are engaging and memorable because they sound good.

The storyteller can make or break any space book. I pretend to be a master storyteller when reading books to my children. I switch into character mode with different voices to keep their attention and make it memorable. Adding a puppet is an excellent addition to being a storyteller. I am not very skilled at storytelling, but my daughters usually laugh, so it is good enough.

While space books are a great introduction to space education, I consider them supplemental because they cannot cater to the whole child's experience of space. To engage more of my children's senses, I intend to have them view space models, visit planetariums, or use telescopes as they become familiar with the basics through books. I read space books for my children to help them develop their imagination, inspire their curiosity, build their vocabulary, and create excitement to learn more about space based on the current information we know about space.

About the author...

Suzanne lives in Middlesex, England with her husband, two children and a crazy cocker spaniel.

Her writing journey began at the age of twelve when she completed her first novel. She discovered the fantasy genre in her late teens and has never looked back. Giving up work to raise a family gave Suzanne the impetus to take her attempts at novel writing beyond the first draft, and she is lucky enough to have a husband who supports her dream - even if he does occasionally hint that she might think about getting a proper job one day.

Now an author of four novels including the Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy and her debut, Visions of Zarua, Suzanne hopes the dreaded ‘W’ word will never rear its ugly head again!

Maggie is a woman lost in the sea of life. She's had a momentous few weeks with significant changes in pretty much every area you can imagine. The passing of her mother. While Maggie has been navigating the parental waters of her own past, she's also reconnecting with her own teen daughter, whether she wants to or not!

Teen years...go figure...but their relationship is complicated by other secrets that are being held too close to the chest, making the girl's assumptions misguided, and her anger directed the wrong way. Nothing like a family emergency to break everyone out of their own heads though, am I right? Yeah, and Roxie inadvertently creates just such a situation, putting lives in danger, and fracturing feelings THAT much more. A surprise hero emerges, but it's not so much the WHO of the rescue that's important, but the sharing of truth that occurs directly after. They say the truth shall set you free...well, even if it doesn't physically, the mental, and emotional benefits of such a release are felt ten-fold, as Maggie and Roxie are quick to learn.

All in all, a story that begs us to remember what it was like to be young, and not to turn the lessons we learned the hard way into weapons that hurt ourselves and the next generation. Things happen, even to the best of the best, but it's not the WHAT that happened that's important, but HOW we deal with it, HOW we learn from it, and HOW we use that knowledge to let the next gen know it's okay if you stumble; sometimes the BEST things in life come after that fall.

This was a thrilling ride from start to finish.

When first we meet Riley Oh, she's lost her touch with her yourself, with her family, with her friends...with her LIFE. While it's understandable considering all she has been through...discovering an incredible heritage, inadvertently making her clan lose their powers of healing while trying to save the world, having her parents and friends completely mind wipe on her, and almost losing her sister for good...it doesn't make it any easier to digest. She's cut off from her emotions; lost her way. She blames herself for so many things that were outside of her control, as so some of the former clan, and all she wants to do is set things right. That guilt, that desire to make things good again for everyone is what drives her to make an irrational choice, landing her in the underworld on a self made quest to restore the clan's powers...but as you might have guessed, things are not quite that simple. There are many obstacles along the way, including a 1000 year sentence to be served in one of the seven realms of hell, imugis that are not nearly as cute as the name might make them sound, and additional unknowns that seem to pop up from every corner. Good thing she has a guide to help her through...sort of. Good thing she catches up with someone she knows though is surprised to find...sort of. Good thing at the end of the day the drudgery through the seven levels is more than a punishment...or vacation (what a concept!)...but a chance to learn and grow as she makes her way from the Riley she was before to the new(ish) and improved(ish) version left behind after all is said and done.

I really enjoyed this story from start to finish. It was so interesting to learn about some of the Korean beliefs surrounding the afterlife, and reincarnation, while being engrossed in the Fantasy story unfolding before our very eyes. The dummy book Riley Oh encountered put it pretty cut and dry, even from the contents page, while the real thing's makeover was hard to believe, yet quite the concept! As the story unfolded, so many more pieces, more characters, more stories were put into play that you could just feel it building to the possibility of another title in the series, still to come. I mean, it's bad enough to have to leave characters behind that you've grown to know and love, but when they're are left on such a precipice as these were? All true fans can do is count the days until the next adventure is ours to explore!

So take a walk into the past, to secure a future for Riley Oh and her family, friends, and clan. There are many surprises along the way, as well as liberal use of imagination, but that's what makes stories like these so unforgetable!
