About the book...
Objectively, Sophie is a success: she’s got a coveted job at a top consulting firm, a Manhattan apartment, and a passport full of stamps. It isn’t quite what she dreamed of when she was a teenager dog-earing pages in exotic travel guides, but it’s secure. Then her best friend bails just hours after they arrive in Hong Kong for a girls’ trip, and Sophie meets Carson, a free-spirited, globetrotting American artist.

In the midst of their whirlwind vacation romance, Carson invites Sophie to join him on his haphazard journey around the world. While the brief international jaunts she sneaks in between business trips don’t feel like enough, Sophie is far too practical to throw away her five-year plan on a whim. Yet Carson’s offer forces her to question whether the reliable life she’s chosen is really what she wants–and she soon discovers that his feelings for her run deeper than she realized.

I gotta say...it's not all sunshine and roses, but I loved it all the more for it.

Picture it...Hong Kong, a girls only trip with your best friend (sorta), a city of new things to try, buy, and explore.  Sounds EXCITING, right?  Well it did...until that bestie decided her on again off again guy back home is on again and ditched her for the states.  (OMG!)  I know...it's okay...I was upset enough for the both of us.  What sort of friend DOES that?  I mean, hello...there's a reason One Tree Hill (dating myself here, I know...but hey, the leading lady is named SOPHIE...ring any fan bells there?) had the whole "hoe's before bro's" thing that has been retagged a hundred times since (sisters before misters, bellas before fellas, hens before mens...geez, I DID NOT realize how many variations there actually were!).  You don't just ditch your gal pal for a fella that may or may not stick (I won't even spoil the "surprise" for you on what the case was here...)...ESPECIALLY in a foreign country!  Okay, done ranting, back to the review....

Image result for see my soul

While we get to explore the great big world with Sophie, it's not the sites that she visits that really hold a candle of memory...it's with WHOM the adventures take place.  That's right.  Our gal doesn't stay solo for long when she makes an unexpected acquaintance, but that's all he is...a fling...right?  Sure...keep telling yourself that...in the mean time, I will say that I like what this new connection does for Sophie.  It grants her permission (in her own mind) to be her WHOLE self.  I don't know about you, but we humans are pretty multifaceted in regards to personality.  It's rare that someone gets to see our entire self, and I'm talking more exposure than simply biblical.  Bodies can be seen, but really getting someone or having someone get you...THAT'S truly scary territory...as Sophie finds out first hand...but once that connection is made and recognized, it's what follows that truly speaks volumes.

In the end, it was a story about traveling this great big world, and not simply uncovering the secrets of the past, but the secrets of our true selves.  It's about unlocking the passions of our hearts, following our dreams, and living in the moment...while still remembering tomorrow will come, it's just how we greet it that counts.  A great tale for those with a travelers soul, as well as fans of Women's Fiction in general.

Dog Gone, Back Soon by Nick Trout

Hi guys!
Welcome back to another day another post, here at your source for bookish fun whenever the need calls, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Here's hoping everyone had an amazing weekend and a very Happy Mother's Day as well.  As for me, I had to work, but then I managed to spend some quality time with dear old Mom.  Gotta love her, she IS the best after all.  Isn't it great when you have those in your life you can depend on, love unconditionally, and are there for you through thick and thin?  Yep.  No matter the circumstances, it's a wonderful feeling...but speaking of unconditional love, I know another "friend" that provides an outlet for that as well only they come packaged in fur and walk on four legs (most of the time) in lieu of two.  Yep, you know who I'm talking about....the fur babies!  Today's featured title happens to deal highly with these little loves and a less than outstanding male lead.  Now I don't mean that completely derogatory, allow me to explain.

Today's featured book of choice is....

Nick Trout

When Dr. Cyrus Mills returned home after inheriting his estranged father’s veterinary practice, The Bedside Manor for Sick Animals, the last thing he wanted was to stay in Eden Falls, Vermont, a moment longer than absolutely necessary.  However, the previously reclusive veterinary pathologist, quickly found that he actually enjoyed treating animals and getting to know the eccentric residents of the tiny provincial town—especially an alluring waitress named Amy.

So Cyrus is now determined to make Bedside Manor thrive.  Not an easy goal, given that Healthy Paws, the national veterinary chain across town, will stop at nothing to crush its mom-and-pop competitor.  And the rival vet practice isn’t Cyrus’ only competition.  A handsome stranger shows up out of nowhere who clearly has a mysterious past with Amy.  To top it off, Cyrus finds himself the guardian of a very unique orphaned dog and smack in the middle of serious small town drama.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Look into his eyes and tell me....just how CUTE that little guy is!
I mean truly, the dog is adorable.  The sign a nice touch and the expression on the pooch's face, priceless.  Here comes the catch....or rather catches...and then we'll get back to the goodness.  First up, the cover.  As with A LOT of ARC's changed between pre-pub and pub and although this dog is cutey patooty for sure, the ARC cover pooch is actually in the book giving you an instant connection even before you crack the spine.  This big guy, not so much.  (Sorry pup!  You're still adorbs!)  Speaking of spines....
Out leading man, Cyrus, is nerd extraordinaire.  Part of his charm?  Perhaps....but for me, only in SMALL doses.  I mean at some points my mind was changing his role from leading man to follower of others .  It's not that I needed him to butch up a bit more or anything, but he just seemed to crawl into his obsessive shell a bit TOO much leaving me to miss the glimpse of backbone I'd seen ....yet not enough to call his name from afar.  I'm sorry, but we just didn't click.  Now that I've got THAT off my shoulders, let's talk story because despite all I've said thus far, the pages DID indeed fly by and I truly did enjoy all that was spun.
I loved the overly connected Doris who could tell you news or gossip before it even happened.  I loved the nameless old man desperately trying to escape his sad lot in life.  I loved the man's dog (Stash) who teaches Cy a thing or two besides how to fetch and open doors without opposable thumbs; he's one of the unexpected true stars of this story.  I love Charlie and Gabe despite their less-than-on-the-up-and-up choice of past times; they've a different view on life and yet, it works in this quirky little town.  That's another thing, I love the small town....even if EVERYONE knows everything.  Guess what?  They may seem to but they don't and that little leeway in there creates room for jumping to conclusions, and misdirected emotions that create conflict, mistrust, humorous situations and swollen temples thanks to a roundhouse kick connecting with your head.  My point is, where the lead may fall short, the story makes up for it in spades.  I'd even be tempted to read the first book just to visit this crazy little town once again.
So you see, you can't judge a book by its cover, nor can you judge a story by its lead.  Sometimes they go hand in hand like the icing on a cake....other times it's like trying to put a sweater on a cat (*-*).  In the end, it's all about your time spent with the read and how much or little fun you had along the way.  Did it bring you laughter or tears?  Did it give you something to think about?  Did it leave its mark on you in some fashion so that months or years from now you can still recollect some if not all of your time between the pages?  My answer....yes, indeed it did.  My suggestion....to add this title to your wish list if you're a dog lover, fan of small town hi-jinx, love it when the little guy gets his day in the sun, and above all else, are looking for a good read.  There's more here than meets the eye with a story that interconnects with itself and the characters more than first perceived.  Gotta love it when a story surprises you.
BLOG TOUR: I Couldn't Love You More by Jillian Medoff
Well hello there!
Fancy meeting you here on a day like today!  The sun is shining, the birds are singing, there is not a cloud in the sky.  Okay, so reality says the sun is glaringly bright and making it too hot too fast outside, the birds are singing because that’s their job and the clouds are probably on break and gearing up for an afternoon storm but hey, that’s not NEARLY as peaceful scene evoking as the first description, am I right?  Of course I am…but it also illustrates a point I unintentionally made.  Things aren’t always what they first appear to be and much is determined by interpretation…two things we shall discuss in today’s post, along with a few others.  First things first…
In an effort to ALWAYS be true to you my fellow readers and those bookish companies/people I am fortunate enough to work with on promotions and the like, I have a confession to make.  I DID NOT FINISH THIS BOOK….YET.  You see, for those of you that know me (whether online or in person), you know how crazy busy my life can be at times (okay, MOST the time) but my commitment to reading and sharing those adventures is true blue as well….there are times that one or the other simply has to be put on pause for a moment though; unfortunately, this was one of them.  As I write this post, I’m about 2/3, maybe ¾, of the way through and I fully intend upon finishing it because frankly I can’t put it down….I’m too invested in the story not to know how things pan out….but I read til the we hours of the morning and just couldn’t quite get it done.  So perhaps instead of a review, we should call this my observations thus far, deal?
Today’s featured title is a Fiction book that just saw publication a week or so ago.  It features the life and times of Eliot Gordon…partner, mother, successful business woman, and one of three sisters to a slightly eccentric author mom that doesn’t know where the TMI line is.  Oh yes…there will be secrets told, rivalries played out and snotty looks/remarks given…but hey, THAT’S what makes life interesting!  Did I mention the potential affair?  Silly me…  ^_^  Today’s book of choice and blog tour guest courtesy of KMSPR, LLC is….
By
From the author’s site
Which child would you save? A decision no parent can even fathom.
Eliot Gordon would do anything for her family. A 38-year-old working mother, she lives an ordinary but fulfilling life in suburban Atlanta with her partner, Grant Delaney, and their three daughters. The two older girls are actually Eliot's stepdaughters, a distinction she is reluctant to make as she valiantly attempts to maintain a safe, happy household . . .
Then Finn Montgomery, Eliot's long-lost first love, appears, triggering a shocking chain of events that culminates in a split-second decision that will haunt her beloved family forever. How Eliot survives-and what she loses in the process-is a story that will resonate with anyone who has ever loved a child. With hilarious honesty, wrenching depth, and a knockout twist, I COULDN'T LOVE YOU MORE illuminates the unbreakable bonds of family and reveals the lengths we'll go to save each other, even as we can't save ourselves.
Sounds great, right?  So far, it is. From the mother that was there in body but absent in spirit to the rip roaring times the three sisters have, there is a lot of family drama playing out between these pages…and with this many females in a cast, how could they not?  (Oh admit it guys, you totally agree with me there…)  Let’s see, where to begin.  Well there’s the Sculptress (aka Gail and Charlotte’s mom…through biology only because SO much more goes into being a mom than merely creation and blood) who to put it frankly….never grew up and I don’t see her doing it any time soon…for anyone.  Her girls idolize her but I think its more out of a sense of rebellion to a degree and the need to claim something, someone as their own.  Then we have the girls Gordon…Maggie, Sylvia, and Eliot.
All named after the authors that influenced their mother’s desire to become a writer (cool, right?), they are family and love each other through thick and then but BOY do they drive each other up the walls at times!  Maggie is the youngest and therefore constantly fills that role of tagging along no matter what the endeavor…she’s also forced into that follow-not-lead status by her more dominating sister, Sylvia.  Sylvia…wow, now there’s an interesting person.  No really…sometimes I just want to tell her enough with the drama already…you are NOT up for an Academy Award!  Her antics can be down right ridiculous at times (think Marsha Brady only older and WORSE) and if she ever gets the feeling that her elder sister is one upping her, she kicks into action faster than the fireworks burst on the Fourth of July.  She means well but…she definitely lacks the ability to reign herself in.  Then there’s the eldest, Eliot.
Here’s the thing.  I’m in a bit of a love hate relationship with our main character and narrator, Eliot.  On the one hand, I love the person she is when she’s with Grant and company (aka her kids….step and biological) despite his lack of putting a ring on it (sorry, I know it’s not for everyone but I think deep down, it really IS for Eliot).  On the other hand, I really don’t care for the person she becomes when she’s with Finn.  She’s irresponsible, easily distracted, suddenly indecisive, and basically drooling all over herself which when I last checked wasn’t an attractive package no matter how you look at it.  I know, gasp shock and awe…a spoiler point!  Not really….because you see by “with” I simply mean “spending any time in the vicinity of”…yes, that’s how bad she gets.
I mean, I get it; he’s her “life long crush”, her high school sweetheart.  *blink blink*  Yeah…about using the term “sweet” with his name, is she even thinking of the same guy I’m reading about?  Really, that guy was pretty much a when it came to how to treat women….even Eliot for that matter.  Their “relationship” back then really amounted to unacknowledged feelings, a supposed desire to preserve what they had, and a half drunk one night stand; not really seeing the building blocks of a lasting relationship here.  Even now, his presence is always the catalyst for trouble intentional or not.
Anywho…it remains to be seen how it will all play out.  Will they continue to try to relive their glory days in the here and now, screwing up any chance they have at simply being friends and place their current relationships in final jeopardy?  Or will one (or both….hey, benefit of the doubt and all) come to their senses and realize that time marches on, people grow up (well, most anyway) and though once upon a time they may have seemed like a great romance waiting to happen….it just wasn’t mean to be?  Even if I had finished the final page, I wouldn’t tell you!  (^_^)  You’ll have to read it to find out…
Final discussion point and this is something I came to realize about 100 pages in, the title is something of a pondering point.  When I first read about this book, I took the title at face value….a simple statement of how much one person loves another, HOWEVER, knowing what I do know about each of the characters, there are actually many more layers to it than I first perceived.  You have the simple declaration it first appears to be, an affirmation of love.  You have it as a plea, a sorrowful way of saying why things didn’t work out or couldn’t be.  You also have it as a way to explain why someone acts the way they do in spite of themselves and despite the role they play in your life…they love you but they couldn’t love you more.  Something to think about both now and once you’re reading the book.
All in all, from what I’ve read thus far (which again is about 3/4ths of the book as we speak…err, read), it’s an enjoyable story perfect for a summer reading escape.  I’d classify it was Women’s Fiction through and through as you explore the dynamics of family both by blood and by love,  seek out love in all the right and wrong places, uncover the truth hidden before our very eyes and discover a little bit about ourselves along the way.  I will give a small warning to potential readers….there are a few instances of “colorful” language and a scene or two sensual in nature (ice bath not required but a fan, perhaps…she keeps it short though so we can get back to the plot), so my recommended reading age is OLDER teens at the earliest through adults.  If anything drastic changes in my continued reading, you best be believing an update to my review will be made but as the story goes, though we encounter ups and downs just as in life, the writing is done with a practiced hand…can’t wait to see just where the author takes us.
The love of a family....
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the site that aims to bring you bookish love every day of the week, come rain or shine!  Hopefully each of you had a fabulous Valentine’s Day yesterday…whether the time was spent with your friends, family, significant other…or coworkers.  Today is in fact National Singles Awareness Day and for those of you not in the know, it basically is a snarky little holiday where those unattached get to feel…well, unattached and if so motivated, celebrate that freedom.  Am I participating?  Not today….but check back for a revisit of this topic later in the week because it certainly begs for exploration… *stashes confetti, streamers….pushes balloons into closet*
Today, we continue the book love celebration with the love of a family….or in this case a desire for one that runs so very deep, a miracle occurs.  How so?  You’ll see…but first, let’s introduce this title correctly (oh, and if you’re wondering the winners of this book will be announced later today).  The book of choice for today is….
The Snow Child
By
Eowyn Ivey
From the publisher
Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart--he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees.
This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.
We’ll keep this one stark and simple as that is truly where the beauty of this story lies.  The simplicity is not in the delivery, as the language and descriptions used are remarkably beautiful adding a depth no picture could replace.  The simplicity is really in the story itself though you may not see it at first.  It runs deep within the walls of the story, exudes from the barren Alaskan landscape and freely covers the hands of the characters like so much freshly turned soil.  The skeleton of its structure when stripped bare reveals a moving tale of a woman’s heartbreak from the loss of a child, a husband with love in his heart for both her and her brokenness but frozen in place unable to assist, and a desire so deep to share their lives with another that Mother Nature, Father Time and the deities above see fit to breath life into that wish.  Her name is Faina.
Like her name, she is a living example of that fleeting beauty that is beyond words.  We are left at times pondering how “real” she is in all actuality as her origins can only be traced to the creation of a snow child Mabel and Jack create in a rare moment of merriment after the first snow on their Alaskan homestead.  They take care in forming the details from hair of yellow straw to lips cranberry red that her appearance in the flesh so to speak is both shocking and welcome all at once.  There’s a familiarity to her that grants her easy access to their hearts but also a wildness about her that is hard to explain.  She knows where the animals are.  She can hunt with her friend the red fox and kills without remorse when food, shelter, or clothing is needed.  She’d never lose her way in the woods as rather then passing through them, they pass around her.  Is she spirit or is she child?  The inclusion of a connection to our plain of existence only deepens the mystery.  Suffice it to say that it’s a question you’ll be tossing around whilst traversing the terrain of this story…and gladly so…but the child is not the only character to note by a long shot.
Mabel and Jack, the couple whose story is at the center point of all the events yet to come, moved to the far North to create a new life and escape the sadness of their past.  The initial introduction we have to Mabel is a half-hearted attempt at suicide, even so it does not serve to portray weakness in her character but rather the level at which she feels things.  The scene is so surreal as she describes her surroundings, even as she’s about to end it all.  You can see she still has life within her but it takes the unsuccessful attempt to bring it back to the surface of her person.  Jack, though a strong silent type, has forged a shell of silence around himself as an unknown protective barrier against the heartache he’s yet to acknowledge; when it breaks free, the gentle man behind the coldness is revealed for the tender heart he has.
Though the land is barren, there are people inhabiting the local area and one such family within their reach in this vast landscape is George, Esther and their sons.  They’re a frontier family through and through with the can-do attitude required to survive in such an unforgiving place but don’t let their rough and tumble-ish outside fool you.  They may seem built to take whatever comes their way but they are also willing to give until they can’t give anymore to assist a friend in need….and this couple becomes such a friend.  It’s amazing to see Esther and Mabel side by side, their difference shine like fireworks in the night sky and yet they learn to accept those differences for what they are…character enhancements that can only serve to enrich both of their lives.  It’s great to see that the harshness of the land doesn’t sap the love in their hearts.
Overall, a marvelous read that not only revisits a tale you may have heard as a child but breathes new life into it.  You go in having a vague sense of what might occur and the reality of it makes you pause to catch your breath.  It’s truly a work of great fiction in my eyes and being that it’s the first novel from this author, I can’t wait to see what else she might have in store for us.  Highly recommended to teen readers and beyond….you don’t want to miss this incredible journey.  Still need convincing?  Check out the book trailer below…
CONTEST: The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey
Hi there readers!
Welcome back to post two of the day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers....the place that despite having less than stellar computer access at times, is still determined to churn out the best bookish posts for YOU!
We started the day with a Teaser Tuesday post, or as I like to call them a Taste Testing Tuesday post, featuring a title just making its debut into the literary world.  It comes to us from a writer who makes her living as a bookseller in Alaska of all places (how ironic the book takes place there, no?  ^_^) and is now tacking on the title of "published author" to her own personal coat of many colors.  (Congratulations!)  Curious about the book?  I thought you might be.  Read on my friend, read on....
