The Scoobie Gang is back... and so are the bad guys!

Just when you thought Sunnydale was taking a break (🤣), we've got a sneaky slayer running interference between, well, others, and the here and now (but WHY?!), Grim showing up like a VERY WELCOME bad penny, Willow being drawn into something we know she's powerful enough to manage, but maybe not ready to handle (not to mention the where-do-we-stand convo needed with Oz!), Hailey's loyalty skewered thanks to unfolding events, and Frankie being Frankie, which means trying to walk the line between slayer-witch and a normal teenager. What's a girl... boy... werewolf... demon... witch to do? (Did I cover all the paranormal mentioned...*rereads*... not even close!)

There's so much going on in this one and yet so much unanswered that we're grasping at straws throughout to catch a glimpse of what's going on behind it all! Add in the Darkness and talk about a head turning series of events?! I'm just saying, of you're a Buffy fan, YOU NEED TO READ THIS, and if you're not, give it a go... AFTER you read the first one! And maybe binge watch the series. Just sayin' 😁. About the author...

Kendare Blake is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels and short stories. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She lives and writes in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked Sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.

You know, as much as this is a Young Adult Fantasy story, it still resonates in real life. I mean, grant it, the obstacles we face aren't always as dire as Calla's are, since we're talking literally life and death, but they come pretty close and skate the line REALLY close. It's hard to choose yourself, choose you over others. It sounds selfish, but self preservation isn't a bad thing. SOMEONE has to protect you, so that someone may as well be you. Now, that doesn't mean keeping others at arms length, living a solid life of one, but it does mean that you are as important as everyone else. It does mean that your knee jerk reaction to self-sacrifice isn't necessarily the best way, or the only way. It does mean that the family you have, whether gathered or born into, are there for you because they value you, not simply what you can do or provide. So as much as the danger surrounds Calla and her companions, as much as the darkness calls to her from outside as well as in, as much as the easy way would be to simply give in or give up, it's never really that simple in the end...and the repercussions would be far reaching.

Take a chance. Get to know Calla, and her two best friends. Discover the Onyx witch that captured her heart in spite of itself, and the other that's dancing on the edge of her feelings that's done more for her than the first. Witness the magical net that is inevitably drawing closer and closer to snaring its prey...that prey being Calla...and be there for the fireworks as her power flies free, for better or worse. A stunning start to what promises to be a great series; I can't wait for the next installment!

Kaylie Smith is a writer and lover of all things magical and fantasy. She grew up in Louisiana where she frequently haunted bookstores and practiced her writing craft. Dog Gone, Back Soon by Nick Trout

Hi guys!

Welcome back to another day another post, here at your source for bookish fun whenever the need calls, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Here's hoping everyone had an amazing weekend and a very Happy Mother's Day as well. As for me, I had to work, but then I managed to spend some quality time with dear old Mom. Gotta love her, she IS the best after all. Isn't it great when you have those in your life you can depend on, love unconditionally, and are there for you through thick and thin? Yep. No matter the circumstances, it's a wonderful feeling...but speaking of unconditional love, I know another "friend" that provides an outlet for that as well only they come packaged in fur and walk on four legs (most of the time) in lieu of two. Yep, you know who I'm talking about....the fur babies! Today's featured title happens to deal highly with these little loves and a less than outstanding male lead. Now I don't mean that completely derogatory, allow me to explain.

Today's featured book of choice is....

Dog Gone, Back Soon

When Dr. Cyrus Mills returned home after inheriting his estranged father’s veterinary practice, The Bedside Manor for Sick Animals, the last thing he wanted was to stay in Eden Falls, Vermont, a moment longer than absolutely necessary. However, the previously reclusive veterinary pathologist, quickly found that he actually enjoyed treating animals and getting to know the eccentric residents of the tiny provincial town—especially an alluring waitress named Amy.

So Cyrus is now determined to make Bedside Manor thrive. Not an easy goal, given that Healthy Paws, the national veterinary chain across town, will stop at nothing to crush its mom-and-pop competitor. And the rival vet practice isn’t Cyrus’ only competition. A handsome stranger shows up out of nowhere who clearly has a mysterious past with Amy. To top it off, Cyrus finds himself the guardian of a very unique orphaned dog and smack in the middle of serious small town drama.

Look into his eyes and tell me....just how CUTE that little guy is!

I mean truly, the dog is adorable. The sign a nice touch and the expression on the pooch's face, priceless. Here comes the catch....or rather catches...and then we'll get back to the goodness. First up, the cover. As with A LOT of ARC's changed between pre-pub and pub and although this dog is cutey patooty for sure, the ARC cover pooch is actually in the book giving you an instant connection even before you crack the spine. This big guy, not so much. (Sorry pup! You're still adorbs!) Speaking of spines....

Out leading man, Cyrus, is nerd extraordinaire. Part of his charm? Perhaps....but for me, only in SMALL doses. I mean at some points my mind was changing his role from leading man to follower of others . It's not that I needed him to butch up a bit more or anything, but he just seemed to crawl into his obsessive shell a bit TOO much leaving me to miss the glimpse of backbone I'd seen ....yet not enough to call his name from afar. I'm sorry, but we just didn't click. Now that I've got THAT off my shoulders, let's talk story because despite all I've said thus far, the pages DID indeed fly by and I truly did enjoy all that was spun.

I loved the overly connected Doris who could tell you news or gossip before it even happened. I loved the nameless old man desperately trying to escape his sad lot in life. I loved the man's dog (Stash) who teaches Cy a thing or two besides how to fetch and open doors without opposable thumbs; he's one of the unexpected true stars of this story. I love Charlie and Gabe despite their less-than-on-the-up-and-up choice of past times; they've a different view on life and yet, it works in this quirky little town. That's another thing, I love the small town....even if EVERYONE knows everything. Guess what? They may seem to but they don't and that little leeway in there creates room for jumping to conclusions, and misdirected emotions that create conflict, mistrust, humorous situations and swollen temples thanks to a roundhouse kick connecting with your head. My point is, where the lead may fall short, the story makes up for it in spades. I'd even be tempted to read the first book just to visit this crazy little town once again.

So you see, you can't judge a book by its cover, nor can you judge a story by its lead. Sometimes they go hand in hand like the icing on a cake....other times it's like trying to put a sweater on a cat (*-*). In the end, it's all about your time spent with the read and how much or little fun you had along the way. Did it bring you laughter or tears? Did it give you something to think about? Did it leave its mark on you in some fashion so that months or years from now you can still recollect some if not all of your time between the pages? My answer....yes, indeed it did. My suggestion....to add this title to your wish list if you're a dog lover, fan of small town hi-jinx, love it when the little guy gets his day in the sun, and above all else, are looking for a good read. There's more here than meets the eye with a story that interconnects with itself and the characters more than first perceived. Gotta love it when a story surprises you.

It features a title perfect for the young and the young at heart and is a great way to say you care this Father’s Day. That’s right. From the moment you lay eyes on the cover, you can sense the fun that’s in store. Here is a tale that doesn’t dispel a Mother’s or Father’s parenting style as wrong or obsolete but rather embraces the differences in both. While each has their own way of doing things from getting ready in the morning to birthday party etiquette, they share a common bond….love. All the actions taken no matter how fun or funny are out of the goodness of their hearts and though the approaches may be polar opposites, creating enormously hilarious results (syrup on the dog anyone…or how about a bath where the room gets more water on it than you?), at the end of the day…that love is all that matters.

A smile inducing look at the big guy we call Dad. He may not be superman, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but when all is said and done, for most….he is a top notch, grade A, 100% certified lovable guy. So what if his favorite team losing makes him cry or he’s a bit put out when you win at tic-tac-toe…he’s your Dad and though his efforts may be laughable at times, his love for you is never failing. Recommended read for youngsters and beyond. The story will touch the hearts of all ages as will the art….just try not to shoot milk out your nose when you see some of the Dad’s antics in this book; too funny. (Watch for the dog’s expressions too for an extra chuckle!)

Now, this wouldn’t be a proper jump start to the week if we ended things there, now would it? No siree. When offered to chance to participate in this tour, I was also given the opportunity to host a guest post with a topic of my choosing. Given the story at hand and the upcoming holiday, I thought something special was in order, so I asked if the author would be so kind as to share a favorite memory of time spent with his Father. GUEST POST: Author Alan Sitomer

My own father passed away when he was still quite young, but the best part of him was, without a doubt, his laugh. When he was relaxed and in a good mood, my dad had the kind of laugh that would fill a room. Loud, resonant, deep, and infectious, my father’s laugh impressed an indelible memory on me and though many, many years have passed since his death, the sound of his laugh still echoes in my ear like the waves of the ocean in a seashell.

Going to see a movie with my father was always an extra special treat, because if the film was funny, he was “that guy.” You know, the one who is unselfconsciously roaring in the middle of the theater, entirely unconcerned about the level of his mirthful volume or the length of time that his merriment continues on. I’m quite sure that more than a few paying customers missed multiple lines of cinematic dialogue as a result of my dad’s amused howl over the years. Yet his sense of humor was more contagious than it was overbearing. (At least it seemed that way to me. To others, well . . . I am sure a few stick-in-the-mud types turned their noses up at the boldness of his joviality but hey, life goes on.)

Indeed, to recollect my own dad around this time of year is to think about the sound of humor. And I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that part of the reason I value humor and laughter as highly as I do in both my own home as well as in the books I write is because of how I grew up listening to the music of the human spirit made manifest in his joy.

No, my dad wasn’t perfect—not by any stretch—but goodness did he have a laugh.

And I miss it.
