For over thirty-five years, she has worked across all mediums, from graphic design and botanical illustration to painting and encaustic. While raising her three daughters—Erin, Hannah, and Sophie—as a stay-at-home mom, she infused creativity into everyday life, finding inspiration in the wonder and imagination of childhood. Now, she is bringing that same passion to the world of children’s books, crafting stories that spark curiosity, joy, and self-discovery.

About the book...

In the sixth installment of the delightful Honeycake book series, Nala’s uncles, Victor and George, take her to a fundraiser where she meets Alexis, a girl with an artificial arm. Through her interactions, Nala learns that you are never too young to lend “a helping hand,” that it’s okay to be different, and that being different doesn’t stop you from doing great things in life.

Filled with bright, and colorful illustrations, Nala's story does not fail to grab your attention.  For little ones, that can certainly be a key point in securing your audience, but for the slightly older set, you have to have the words to go along with it.  By putting Nala in a situation where she was meeting new people that we perceived as different than she, it gave readers the opportunity to see her truthful reaction.  Kids will be kids, but gone are the days of simply letting everything slide.  Many parents and educators are encouraging their curiosity, while curtailing the negative impact by sharing how it feels on the other end of things.  So, while Nala asks questions of her new group of friends, they are openminded, open ended, and without malice, merely seeking knowledge to learn, grow, and adapt...much like these wonderful kids featured would have done throughout their lives.

I loved the messages it was imparting, and I really liked the inclusive nature of the story as a whole.  From her families varied heritage to there individual preferences, there seemed to be no "taboo" subject matter, simply a beautiful display of the many "colors" that make up our fascinating world.  This was my first experience with the Honeycake series, but I can certainly see families bringing these out for story time, and the discussions that could blossom from them, turning moments into memories.

For such a short story, there are a myriad of sensitive topics covered, but all in a kid friendly, easy to relate to way so kiddos can discover themselves and their friends, among the bunch, and come out better for the realizations on the other side.

I loved how each character learns something throughout the story, so it's all even; there's literally no room for bad feelings. They learn how our differences are something to learn more about and celebrate. They discover that an open mind and heart are so much more powerful than prejudice and hate...and an apology for ignorance can go a long way in mending bridges. They realize how treating others as they wish to be treated can make the world a friendlier place, and that friends are worth standing up for. Their relationships become that much stronger, that much deeper, and are rooted in trust, so that they know that if they ever need an ally, they have each others backs.

In short, it's a simple story about a week in school, but it packs a mighty powerful punch! I think it's be a great way for parents or teachers to address a wide range of often difficult topics with a bit more ease, and open the floor to discussions to enlighten and grow from. It's never too early to empower someone...nor is it to ever too late.

Connect the Stars by Marisa de los Santos and David Teague

Recently, I've been pretty much addicted to artist Lindsey Stirling...so much so that I've been listening to her two albums anywhere, anytime.  Yep.  That's me.  Rollin' down the street at 11 PM, windows rolled down to enjoy the night air, and Shatter Me at semi-loud volumes.  What can I say?  I'm a rebel.  ^-^  Anywho, back to my point here...I didn't mention my addiction of sorts to just be pointed or stared at albeit virtually.  No, sir.  I mentioned it because a particular song on her sophomore album really stuck with me when reading this book.  It's called We Are Giants, and is one of the few on the album that has words accompanying the wonderful arrangements.  The part I'm thinking of is this...



Feels like you, just standing there so small,
Just the space between the stars;
Don't be afraid to risk it all,
Cuz we are, we are, we are GIANTS....


It really reminded me of the Fab Four, consisting of Lucas, Kate, Aaron, and Audrey.  They start out as strangers with their own unique sets of issues and eventually despite everything be it wish or whim, they become friends.  Don't say that too loudly now because you just might scare off Audrey, with good reason.  

An eclectic bunch for certain and all with special abilities (we're not talking superhuman but differentiating enough), you can't fathom them ever coming together, unless it was purely because they were forced to.  Umm, okay, well I suppose at first they were but then they grew on each other and to understand each other which ultimately enabled them to understand themselves better too.  They weren't the only ones though.  The rest of the group has some pretty eye opening encounters as well, even those nominated in the never-gonna-get-a-clue-or-shred-of-niceness category.  What we eventually see is that deep deep deep deep down, everyone has a brighter side; sometimes they just get buried under all the crap that life throws out way.




It's a simple story without a huge driving plot line, but it works.  The characters are likable and their quirky natures make them even more so.  I really applaud Louis with his sudden burst of heroism, Kate with her ability to make the bullies stand down, Aaron with his knack for saying the right thing and also not saying anything at all, and of course Audrey for her new understanding of her curse turned gift.  The lessons they learn are not easy, some are especially un-pretty, but they are all realizations that needed acknowledgment and stepping stones to grow from.  To pick a favorite would be like trying to choose your favorite fur-baby...not going to happen because they all leave their mark in unexpected ways.

In conclusion, a grand adventure that you don't see everyday with characters that you'd want to call friend.  The only negative aspect of the book for me was when the plot got a little muddied with a possible murder.  It was a major case of "how in the world did you jump to THAT conclusion", especially since these were pretty smart kids.  Grant it the target audience is younger than myself, but even still, it seemed like the least logical option.  Rest easy though, the oddness doesn't stick around and before you know it, we're back on track.  Some of my suspicions were confirmed, while others were stretched into new areas, a great balance if you ask me.  All in all though, it worked out to be a fantastic read that'll be equally appreciated by male and female readers of the Middle Grade set and beyond. BRAVA to the author team!

About the book...

This is definitely one flamboyant tale but beneath all the witty comebacks, creative language, and sashaying, beats a heart of gold...someone worthy of giving and receiving love. 
 
 Admittedly, at first, I wasn't really feeling our lead.  He was as loud as his hair and twice as foul in the mouth.  (WARNING:  Language can be an issue here.)  I just couldn't really understand why he felt the need to "go there" as often as possible.  Was it for posturing sake?  Was it just him being him?  Was it a reaction to all that's been dished at him over the years and simply his natural self at this point?  That last one, I refused to believe.  So, I kept reading.  Turns out, it's a combination of defense mechanism from years of torment, and a bit of a tendency to over dramatizing things from his own psyche.  Once that was cleared up, it was smoother sailing...well, for me anyway.
 
In its most basic sense, this is a story about acceptance and loving others for who they are not what they are or we want them to be.  That sort of "labeling" is what got Chance's mind in a knot and almost lost him the one person he wanted to know most...himself.  Surprised you, didn't I?  You thought I was going to say Jazz, right?  While it's true he does risk losing the man of his dreams (who he may or may not score a sweet moment with somewhere in the latter portion of the story...) despite his best attempts at following the list of "Ten Scientifically Proven Ways..." and a love spell (or two), the real ah-ha moment is when Chance finally sees himself for everything he can be.  All the labels we throw about are just that, labels.  They only have the power we give them and without them, people and things don't cease to exist....they just find a new way of being. 

 
 
 
To conclude, a story that might seem targeted at a particular audience but that truly should be read by all (older teens and beyond).  Chance's plight is understandable and well represented.  The challenges in his path, the good times and bad, the adversity faced both from haters and within, even the tiffs he has with his best gal pal Emma (love her word generating tendencies!), all lend a hand in creating the emotional, fashion forward, feisty, young diva-when-he-wants-to-be that we know by book's end.  You'll laugh (really...the "ten" list is laugh worthy), you'll cry (his inner struggle is pretty deep), you'll cringe at the injustice of it all, but you come to love Chance just as he comes to love himself.

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.


Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality.
