A dog by any other name...

Welcome back to the site that aims to please the bookish side of you...
Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today's book choice is no coincidence but it brings a tear to my eye for
two reasons. First off, a stop in reality...remember a few weeks back that
new doggy baby I welcomed? Well, I'm sad to say almost two months later and
we're gonna have to unwelcome him. No; I'm not heartless of something but
something pretty big must have happened in his past that love is simply not
overcoming (or he could simply need to be in a home with no other dogs) and
last night, my little Yorkie got the bad half of him. They're okay for the
most part as it wasn't a full out attack or something but he bit them and
now they have a small cut by their eye. * sigh* It's not the first snap
either but the others were explained away with the situation, this one
definitely can't be...so I'll be bidding ado to the big guy, don't worry
though... He'll get a good home. The shelter we have is a no kill so he'll
be safe and sound. Will he be missed? Certainly... But I gotta take care of
my little guys too. The hard decisions that go along with being a
responsible pet owner... Which brings me to today's post.

Pets no matter the variety you favor require love and attention but
sometimes for whatever reason, it's not feasible. Perhaps someone was
allergic, maybe your finances changed, perhaps an unexpected move arrived
and taking your companion was not an option... or maybe they simply ran
away and no matter how hard you tried, they remained lost. Any way you
slice it, it's a sad situation but sometimes... with the right alignment of
stars, the right glint of the sun, the right park at the right
time...happiness can be found once again. Today's book of choice is...

FLEABAG

This is the story of a little dog looking for the two things they love
most: a loving home and a human to call their own. One day at the park, he
sees his opportunity...a little boy just as lonely as he, desirous of a
playmate and what's this? He's playing with a ball...something dogs love
best. Only one problem...his hygiene leaves something to be desired, an
unfortunate side affect of living on the street, and Bob's mom is less than
welcoming of his new friend. Bob is beside himself and one night he
discovers that the little "fleabag" followed him home, putting into action
his plan to rescue him at his own safetys expense. But this little fleabag
is no dummy, he knows his chosen human should not be outside at this time
of night by himself no less and when love and fate collide, a happy
solution is found for one and all.

It's a heartwarming story that illustrates the love between humans and pets
with a real life connection that makes you feel the story all the more. It
was inspired by the author's visit to a shelter for dogs and cats, or more
specifically one little guy by the name of Flynn. She imagined what life
might have been like for the little guy and all it could be still then gave
a voice to a story seen too often indeed. Sad but true, I know...but that's
why the existence of "in-between" homes (shelters) is so important. They
provide a place for little ones such as this guy to rest their heads while
in wait of their forever home. It may not be perfect but it sure beats the
dangers of the street.

In closing, I recommend this one to animals lovers young and old, tall and
small, near and far...the story will bring a tear to your eye and a smile
to your heart while the illustrations bring out the beauty that can be
found in even the most unlikely situations. I also recommend paying a visit
to your local shelter whether in an adoption roll or that of a volunteer.
There's always a severe shortage of both in this arena so any way you can
leave your mark on their lives in a positive fashion is well worth the
effort.

Happy Birthday Susan B Anthony!

Welcome back to the FRIDAY edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place that knows TGIF doesn't REALLY stand for "Thank Goodness It's Friday" but really "Thank Goodness I've Friends"! ^_^  

Today, we're exploring a Children's Storybook based on a historical person and movement that knocked a lot of people on their behinds.  Who and what?  Oh readers, you never fail to make me smile with your inquisitive nature and I'm happy to grant your request with an immediate answer.  One name should do the trick...

...Susan B. Anthony.

She's not just a face on a coin you know.

She was born on February 15th, 1820 (oh would you look at that...the same month and date as today, what a coincidence!  Hehe...) and throughout her life worked for such magnanimous causes as abolition, educational reform, labor equality,  and perhaps most notably women's rights and suffrage.

Suffrage.

It's basic definition is THE RIGHT TO VOTE but back in Ms. Anthony's day it was most often associated with a woman's right to vote, or rather lack thereof.  That's right and despite all she did for the movement, all the rallies to draw support, all the speeches to gain attention of "the man" and women of the times, she wasn't even permitted the luxury of seeing it finally reach the goal sought.  Ms. Anthony passed away in March of 1906 and the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (known as the Susan B. Anthony amendment) wasn't passed until 1920.  

100 years.

10 decades.

THAT'S how long it took for women to gain a voice in politics.

Brings a new perspective to the whole election process now doesn't it?

Anyway, if you're wondering about the impromptu history lesson, than...you're probably not the only one.  Admittedly I don't go all out historian very often but it begged to be addressed not only for the marking of her birthday but also today's featured title...

It's a children's storybook in structure and small details but otherwise it carries much historical accuracy bringing to light this massive effort to a who new generation.  In it, we are introduced to young girl named Bessie.  She's a firecracker in the making, this one for she lives in a time when women were not allowed to do just any old thing.  She gets a taste of this oppression first hand when she expresses interest in tagging along on a hiking trip with her father and brothers.  Their response...it's not ladylike, strenuous exercise is not for girls, and on and on.  Yep, even from her family because those were the times...but not for much longer if Ms. Anthony has something to say about it.

Bessie first meets Ms. Anthony at a suffrage tea her mother hosts at their home.  Though not impressed with her looks for she seemed like a grouchy old woman in photographs, in person her strength and guiding hand help uplift Bessie's spirits.  She instills in her the desire to make a change, to get the world to sit up and listen because what women have to say is EQUALLY as important as the words of a man.  One rally at Golden Gate Auditorium in San Francisco later and she'd committed herself to the cause as well.  Did it make her the most popular girl in her neighborhood?  Hardly, in fact some parents forbade their children to associate with her and her family...you know, since knowledge and empowerment are contagious...still they pressed on.  A lot of hard work, a strong backbone and many years passing by and change finally DID come.  

The story itself was drawn from the actual family papers of the real life Bessie, Bessie Keith Pond and while the in-between details may have been embellished, it still holds the magic and power of the movement it details.  The format used to convey the story makes it accessible to not only history buffs or the curious but to readers of all ages while the wonderful illustrations provide a visual flair that commits it to memory even further.  Once you've reached the story's end, readers are treated to an offering encouraging further research actual photographs, a mini-biography and a timeline detailing some key years in the women's suffrage movement.  Even the inside cover of both the front and back of the book are adorned having actual clips of newspapers and articles from back in the day bringing us even closer to the front lines and inviting us once again to learn about and FROM our pasts to help create a brighter future for tomorrow.  What's that?  You thought our battle was over?  Hmm, I wouldn't be so certain....just look at the hubbub that surrounded the running of a woman for vice president a few years back.  Something to think about the next time you take your "voice" for granted...

In honor of the holiday, the featured title I've selected places love front and center with high hopes, dainty dreams and a great reminder of the magic that love instills in our lives each and every day.  It's for the wee folks, the not-so-wee folks and everyone in between because let's face it...love makes the world go round in all its shapes and forms.  Without further ado, today's book of choice is...

If I Found a Wistful Unicorn

As curious as the title is, the words within match its stride equally creating a harmonious read filled to the brim with expressions of love both ordinary and extraordinary.

It's truly a work of art both inside and out.  The book jacket is simple and unassuming, yet just behind it the cloth covered hardbound work with its wistful unicorn rearing lends it an air of fantasy.  Beyond the cover, we've page after page of watercolor illustrations lending their gentle touch to the warm words of love within.  Each turn of the page reveals another situation to ponder, leading up to a final declaration of love known, valued and treasured simply because of all the revelations made along the way.

"If I picked a little flower up and out it in a paper cup...
Would you smell it?"

"If my nightingale were a monotone and much too shy to sing alone...
Would you hum with him?"

These sentiments and more are worded just so to pique the readers interest, tease their curiosity into wondering just where they are being led and establish a relationship with the recipient that leaves no room for doubt about their status in another's eyes...and heart.  It's beautiful, sweet and curious...the pictures lending your mind's eye a helping hand so that you can explore each page to its fullest.  Speaking of exploring, there is a little surprise on every page just waiting to be found...sort of a magical tag-a-long that stays with you the whole book through; just another pausing point of wonder in this fabulous tale. To say I enjoyed the journey would be a gross understatement but alas, sometimes words fail to express the true beauty of the thing at hand.  I'll close in saying only this...read it.  For yourself, to another, or even as a gift, it's a touching work that works on so many levels and for all ages that will leave you with a smile on your face, a twinkle in your eye and an extra warmth in your heart.

Another curious thing to note is that this particular edition of this work is the anniversary gift edition.  What anniversary are we celebrating?  I'm glad you asked.  As it seems, Peachtree Publishers was established way back in May 1977 by Ms. Helen Elliott.  Her dream of establishing a Southern publishing destination finally became a reality after a successful battle with cancer...funny (or rather not) how as we grow older we lose the trail of stardust our dreams left for us to follow and yet extreme crisis will shine a new light on them once again.  Anywho...a dream became reality and with the help of fellow cancer survivor Bill Drath (yep, the illustrator of this work!), she was put in contact with the eloquent thoughts of Ms. Ann Ashford.  Their collaboration became the FIRST book ever published by Peachtree Publishers...the work you are reading about today.  Pretty cool, huh?  ^_^

What's the Time, Grandma Wolf? by Ken Brown

Welcome back to another exciting day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place that doesn't let the non-readers of the world stand in her way of bringing you a new post every day; well, most the time anyway.  ^_^

Today's title was a recent receive and read for me from the FAB folks over at Peachtree Publishers (Hi, Emily!) and when looking for what book to feature, both title and cover SCREAMED for my attention.  How so?  Well, let's just say that today has been one of THOSE days (again...oye!) and playing the game detailed within with more permanent consequences would be at least a smirk inducing thought.  (No worries guys...just blowing off a little steam...but really, sometimes...people...ugh! You know what I mean? Anywho...)  What's that you say?  You thought I was reviewing a book today?  Oh, I AM...but the story happens to be based off a game that YOU can play at home! Too cool, right?  I LOVE additional interaction with a story.  Anyway, back to our primary focus; today's book of choice is...

What's the Time, Grandma Wolf?

Here's the deal.  Take one wolf dressed in a grandmother's clothes (which are actually her own for once!), a forest of furry little critters brimming with curiosity, unable to heed a warning, and a time lapsed sequence of questions that lead to an assumable end...or do they?

In the story, Grandma Wolf answers the mundane question of "what time is it" over and over again with (patience!  My goodness those curious "kids"!) various tasks such as time to get up, brushing her teeth, chopping some wood, cleaning the stew pot...can you see where this is heading? Ha!  Think again...you may be surprised; I know I was...and pleasantly so.  It reminds me of the classic story of The Three Little Pigs with a Red Riding Hood twist.  The whole bait and switch method employed easily allows older readers to be entertained while the youngsters are pouring over the anticipation of Grandma's next answer.  Let us not forget the illustrations you'll be ogling as well!  The technique used is watercolor paintings  which in my opinion gives added texture and beauty to each two-page spread encountered.  The fawn is a little more adorable and Squirrel's look of surprise is just a little more smile inducing (no really, pick up a copy....you'll see what I mean) and Grandma's teeth all the better to...*ahem*  ^_^

Suffice it to say, I enjoyed the story overall and would highly recommend it to fans of the classics and readers young and young at heart.  It'd make a great addition to any personal library or classroom...and speaking of classroom, remember I mentioned a game.  It's detailed on the inside flap of the back cover and will allow you to continue the story well after the last page.  The aim of the actual game is to slowly approach the wolf, in this case Grandma Wolf, in dribs and drabs.  Your closeness at any given time is dictated by the answer she gives, be it one o'clock, two o'clock, etc.  For each o'clock numeral given, you take a step.  Example:  Five o'clock = take five steps forward.  See?  It's all up to "Grandma" when "dinnertime" arrives because she has to be able to catch someone for her dinner.  So...who will you be having for dinner?  Hmm?  What's that?  You're inviting me?  How thoughtful...but I'm, I'm booked.  *-*

Welcome to another installment of Taste Testing Tuesdays here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers! Taste Testing Tuesdays was inspired by 'Teaser Tuesdays', a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. 

On the menu this week...one ebook that I'm aiming to finish today (*fingers crossed*) and another paper book I've been sampling from since this weekend with curious results.  Ready for a taste?  Here we go!

This beautiful story of life, love and hardship has marched forward to a darker time in human history...Hitler.  Yes, a dark and dangerous time for those that clung to the faith hated by this dictator.  *shakes head*  Should be finished with this dance by day's end....

I plunged my hand into the mass again and drew it back sharply -- a sliver of crab shell pierced me under my fingernail.  I saw white, then orange anger cleared this pain.  My anger was sharper than these crabs.  I knew this.

This one is a curious little read suggesting that their are really THIRTEEN signs in astrology.  Curious, right?  Even more curious is when they are unleashed on mankind....can we say personality check?  Yep.  This scene I've already read through but it deals with Jalen's battle with none other than Cancer (hence the shellfish situation).

Hi guys!

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when the need to read strikes and you're in need of inspiration; don't worry, we've got you covered.

So, how was YOUR weekend my friends?  Exciting?  Relaxing?  Just another day that starts with an "S' and ends in a "Y"?  Here's hoping it was something to remember one way or the other.  As for me, a usual work weekend...but I did manage to scratch in a little reading time; grant it not as much as I would have liked, but some is better than none some days!  Surprisingly though, today's post features none of the books read over the past two days but something NEW...something EXCITING...something adorably cute that you simply must see!  Oh, and it also happens to be available as a FREE DOWNLOAD today over on Amazon.  Yep...totally is.  So, care to read all about it?  Let's!

Today's featured title came to my attention from the illustrious author of such works as Caarina the Cooking Fairy and Scram-pire but this time around features a slick feathered friend with great fashion sense itching with curiosity.  Believe me, you would too if you stumbled upon what she does!  It's another Children's ebook published with Kite Readers that will keep the kiddos young and young at heart enchanted for many reads to come.  Without further ado, today's book of choice is....

Now hold on...it's not what you're thinking.  It's not THAT Pandora's box...but rather a box frozen in ice that a little girl penguin named Pandora stumbles upon one day in her chosen outdoor adventure.  Hmm...a box frozen in ice at the bottom of the ocean...okay, so maybe there's a chance it IS that box after all... *-*  ...but no warning needed for the kiddos because this ebook is reader friendly.  Though everyone can walk away with a different impression on a book's message, my mind retained the proclamations of following the path that suits you best is ALWAYS the right option, believe in yourself and stand proud for who you are!  Of course, there is also the reminder that a little help from a friend (or friends...be they flippered, beaked or feathered) can go a long way...which always makes me think of those I hold dear and inserts a little smile into an otherwise unpredictable day.  ^_^  Quite heart warming while at the same time being chill-fully entertaining...now, let's talk format and design.

This being an ebook, we know it's not my first reading platform of choice, but I do make exceptions from time to time and this one is TOTALLY worth it.  The illustrations are bright and vivid before your eyes...not to mention Pandora, her brothers and fellow seas critters couldn't be more adorable!  The illustrations lend a lot to the narrative so that in the end the balance between story and picture is struck with an even foundation; neither one carries the other but they are equal parts in a "marriage" that works for all.  I can imagine little ones ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the penguins, slightly older readers marveling at her independence in a normally group mentality situation, and finally adults mulling over the messages, the rhyme and meter, and the surprise ending given to the story.  Another great addition to the Children's Lit scene from an author leaving her mark all over the ebook world.

Welcome back to the weekend edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers... the place that doesn't care if you sleep in late or stay up all night, we'll be here whenever you're ready for a bookish break in your day.

Today, we're taking a look at a Pajama Press title that broaches the subject of tolerance, acceptance, and friendship...in a rather interesting way. It's a Children's picture book starring a duo of animal friends that... well perhaps friends is too strong a word here, because the looks they give each other combined with the tendency to be WAY way competitive lend more to frenemies, but I digress; allow me to properly introduce today's book of choice...

Giraffe and Bird run with the same crowd, but a friendship it is not, or at least not quite yet and certainly not in the traditional sense of the word.  One way or another they manage to compete against each other for the title of "most obnoxious" throughout the course of any given day but just because they don't share each others clothes and gossip all the time, doesn't mean that they don't have mutual respect for one another. The truth of this matter is exposed when one average day at the watering hole turns into a moment of embarrassment that sends one slightly awkward friend away with his head hung low. What created this sad turn of events? The thoughtless words or rather giggles and guffaws of another... good thing he has someone willing to show his true colors in order to set things right.

I first referred to this as an unusual read.  The reason?  Simply because the behavior these two exhibit is much less than the usual friendship picture books tend to portray. Its not all hugs and smiles but it is all about respecting one another and not allowing mistreatment to befall them. You see a problem, you fix it; same applies here as well. You don't just idly stand by and watch bullying happen. You step in, in your own little way, to make sure the affected party is alright and try to bring a smile to their day. Combine the lessons with the adorable and hilarious illustrations and you'll be well on your way to appreciating those you call friend a whole lot more.

Recommended read for all ages as there's a little something in it to capture the hearts and minds of anyone able to appreciate the warmth of a friendship not made in a passing glance but heartily built. Not all friendships are emerge from an exact likeness to one another, some take time and the pursuit of common ground...BUT those differences we uncover in each other are something to be celebrated. So who will you be celebrating today? I choose all of you! :-)

So…yesterday was a CRAZY day, as those of you who follow me on Twitter may have read.  First, job one is all haywire, then the office chair dumps me on my butt.  Journey to job two and the first shift lead had to go home early (sick), then a member of my night team called off (sick), and to top it all off, I sprain my ankle…with dramatic flair of course.  ^_^  Yeah, I’m looking at the bright side because as much as this sucker hurts, it could be worse.  So, a few Tylenol’s in the system and an ice bag (or three) later and I’ll be good to go…just a bit slower.  *ugh*  Oh well, life marches on…but not if you’re starring in today’s featured title.  *plays ominous music*

How is it a "combo post" you might ask? Good question!  It's a review and winner reveal all in one...hence the punny post title choice there (hehe).  I've been holding off on the review specifically for today and believe me, it WASN'T easy as is often the case with books you'd rather stand on a mountain top and shout all about than hide it within a stack of books for discovery at another time.  This one DEFINITELY falls into the first category, trust me.  Without further ado, today's book of choice is...

About the book...

There are people in this world who are Nobody. No one sees them. No one notices them. They live their lives under the radar, forgotten as soon as you turn away.
That's why they make the perfect assassins.
The Institute finds these people when they're young and takes them away for training. But an untrained Nobody is a threat to their organization. And threats must be eliminated.
Sixteen-year-old Claire has been invisible her whole life, missed by the Institute's monitoring. But now they've ID'ed her and send seventeen-year-old Nix to remove her. Yet the moment he lays eyes on her, he can't make the hit. It's as if Claire and Nix are the only people in the world for each other. And they are--because no one else can really see them. 

At first confusing, but then...MESMERIZING.

As much as I will sing the praises of this book, I have to admit I WAS confused at first.  I had never read any of the author's previous works so I had no exposure to her writing style and I had to wrap my mind around the characters and their voices before I could easily proceed.  Hindsight tells me it may actually be something specific to this book considering the character types we're dealing with (Sensors, Normals, Nobodies, and Nulls...more on those later), almost like we're Normals and having a hard time noticing our leads because of their statuses...in which case I say GREAT JOB to the author!

Nix and Claire are our primary narrators and seeing the world through their eyes is like...a cold splash of reality.  Haven't you ever felt looked over, forgotten or cast aside?  Oh come on....raise your hand; I've already got BOTH of mine raised.  It's an inevitability for most...sad but true...but the level to which it occurs here is beyond anything you or I have ever faced.  I mean, her folks had to leave notes at home to remind them they HAD a daughter so that if she wasn't with them when returning from the store they could go back and get her.  *-*  Talk about bad parenting...and yet, not really; not in THIS reality.  It's a symptom of their condition, their lot in life...simply tagging them as a Nobody.

Nobody.  This story certainly puts that term into a new light and will definitely make you think twice before calling anyone that again (not that you have, just sayin...).  It's a condition that gives others a sort of blindness to their presence.  Like they could be standing right in front of you and for all intents and purposes, you being a Normal would see nothing.  Almost like the Invisible Man except that it's not THEIR problem, it's YOURS.  No really, it's yours because let's just say that if you crossed them (or someone they work for...*ahem*), you'd never see them coming...literally.  But being a Nobody isn't all bad.  You can ease drop all you like, achieve the perfect balance of being "nothing" and walk through walls, or even travel like so much mist on a darkened night to any point in the world you wish to be.  Yes, the perks are nice and definitely lend to the allure, but before you get in line for genetic modification, remember this...you won't only be unseen and unheard, you'll be unloved (or so they say...dun dun dunnn) and that can be a fate worse than death.

Though Nobodies are the primary focus in the story, there are other sorts that make their existence known for better or worse.  We've met the Normals who are simply...normal.  We've mentioned the Sensors who are in fact able to sense Nobodies and Nulls with their enhanced senses; sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.  The one we've not touched on yet though are the Nulls and they are by far the most dangerous.  How so?  Well, they would be the equivalent of what we call sociopaths (and some psychopaths) in today's society...which ironically was a topic of discussion recently at one of my jobs and TOTALLY brought this book to mind (no really, I even made the correlation out loud...^_^).  They make no attachments to others though not by choice but by design, though they draw others to them.  They almost always get what they want for better or worse; usually worse.  They feel nothing for anything or anyone around them.  If a five car pile up were to occur directly in front of them with body parts flying this way and that and someone was screaming for help before their vehicle caught fire...they might simply stand there and watch detached from everything occurring, watching it as if it was a movie.  Scary, huh?  Told ya.  *-*  These are the people that Nix was trained to take out; the threats to society.  Or was it?  (*dun DUN dunnnnn*)  It is often said with extreme power comes extreme corruption and buddy boy this system definitely has a lot to answer for...and if Nix has anything to say about it, those answers will be coming post haste.

In conclusion (because otherwise I'll go on about this one for days), this is one book good for teen boys and girls through adults that will have you on the edge of your seat.  Aside from the world building within a society recognizable as our own, you have a story filled with action (mentioned), danger (also mentioned) and romance (not mentioned but imagine finding that one person that actually SEES you, not just physically but in all ways?!) that's a pleasure to get lost within...even if there is a danger of your flesh and bones melting (I did mention that, didn't I?  Hehe...).  One warning for readers...there is A LOT of internalizing here of feelings, thoughts, and emotions; so much so that you may want to throttle a character or two from time to time.  My advice...go with the flow; it's a part of who they've been brought up to be.  I mean how open would YOU be to expressing yourself if no one ever paid you any mind?
