End of August Roundup!: A LOT LIKE LOVE by Jennifer Snow - REVIEW!

Hi guys and gals!

I'll be posting a few reviews on the go today, so we're doing it short, sweet, and roundup style, but that doesn't mean they deserve any less love! It simply means I've a plethora to share and a job that demands too much of my time (*grumble grumble*), but the sharing must go on! Our next post features a Contemporary Romance perfect to make that transition from summer to fall with a potential couple you'll be rooting for from start to finish, and a meet cute you won't soon forget! 🥰

A Lot Like LoveA Lot Like Love by Jennifer Snow

Sarah and Wes were the couple that could be, if only they have each other a chance. Thanks to a meddling nine year old (who is brilliant!), and an inheritance that raised several eyebrows (but she sure knew what she was doing, even beyond the grave!), they may just get the chance neither is expecting.

It was my first time reading this author's work, so I didn't know what to expect, but I liked the cover and the synopsis, so I was ready for a new adventure. What I got... was that and more! It was a sweet story filled with the much adulting, heartache, and humor, and it kept my attention the whole way through. I loved Sarah's continued attempts at resisting, while focusing on all that needed doing... even when it meant trying to keep a promise to a little girl. I loved Wes in all his handy man glory, giving advice where his expertise allowed, and always looking out for the customer, sometimes to the detriment of his own pocket. His heart was broken but oh so large, and just needed the right adjustments to see all that was before him. The ending was just right, even if it looked like it was going all wrong, and it's certainly one that Contemporary Romance fans won't want to miss!

Much thanks to the Entangled Amara for the ecopy for review. This title is available now, so you know what to do!

Until next time, remember... if it looks good, READ IT!

End of August Roundup: THE WITCH HAVEN by Sasha Peyton Smith - REVIEW!

Up first, a Young Adult title with a magical vein running strong throughout, and many surprises  😮  you'll want to read to believe!

This is a story of more than just magic, although that would be quite enough as is. This is a story about family, friends, belonging, and all the challenges the heart can present when we allow it to actually FEEL.

Frances is a memorable leading lady, despite feeling anything but, and more lost than anything else. She's been dealt a bad hand, yet is determined not to let it take her down. She'll fight for what's right. She'll see those who caused pain put to justice. She'll discover so much about herself, her heritage, and just what friendship, true sisterhood REALLY means... all while giving readers a read to remember!

A great read for YA lit fans that should not be missed!

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC for review. If you don't have this on your radar yet, it's available now so you know what to do!

Until next time, remember... if it looks good, READ IT!

RRR presents.... THE SECRETS OF LATIMER HOUSE by Jules Wake - REVIEW!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're teamed up with Rachel's Random Resources for a stop along their current tour featuring an AMAZING work of Historical Fiction that fans will NOT want to miss! It's out now via One More Chapter, celebrating it's BOOK BIRTHDAY TODAY, and I can honestly say that I didn't want to miss a moment. So, if you're ready to add to your future MUST READ LIST, and you KNOW you more than are, KEEP READING as we dive between the pages of today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...

The Secrets of Latimer House
by
Jules Wake

About the book...
In the war against Hitler every secret counts…

Society heiress Evelyn Brooke-Edwards is a skilled interrogator – her beauty making her a non-threat in the eyes of the prisoners.

Farm girl Betty Connors may not be able to type as she claimed, but her crack analytical skills soon find her unearthing covert connections.

German ex-pat Judith Stern never expected to find herself listening in to German POW’s whispered conversations, but the Nazis took her father from her so she will do whatever it takes to help the Allies end this war.

Billeted together in the attic of Latimer House – a place where secrets abound – Evelyn, Betty and Judith soon form a bond of friendship that carries them through the war. Because nothing is stronger than women united.

Tucked away in the Buckinghamshire countryside, Latimer House, a grand country estate, stands proudly – a witness to some of greatest secrets of WW2.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A story set in more than trying times as everyone tries to find their place in a world on the edge, The Secrets of Latimer House takes you out of the here and now, and into history.  Yes, ladies and gents, there WAS a 'Latimer House', and while the ins and outs of what went on moved us from battlefields to victory, the lives held within were just as important.  Here is where the fiction part of the novel lies.  The author learned about the reality, and created a world within that world so believable, so moving, so memorable that it goes beyond blurring the line between.
Despite there being many characters worthy of mention, for one reason or another, the heart and soul of the story reside in Evelyn, Betty, and Judith.  Three women from more different backgrounds would be hard to find, but throughout their time together, through the ups, downs, heartaches, heart breaks, laughter, and tears, they realize that their similarities outweigh each and every one.  They are women with families, and stories to share, all fighting for a common goal...to end a war that should never have been.  They each contribute to the cause, some in bigger ways than they even realize, but the thing that really gets them through the bad times isn't just their gumption or resolve, but their friendship.  The bond that they build, even while having to maintain secrets for the cause between them, gives them strength when they are down, courage when they are flagging, and backing for whatever may come their way.  Evelyn with her good breeding and grace; she always knew how to handle any intimidating situation, but matters of the heart, she needed a hand.  Betty was all beauty and bluster, but she learns that brains come along with that package and she only needed the right set of eyes to glimpse it for herself.  Judith was reserved due to her darkened past, but she cared ever so much and so deeply that those friendships forged were her tethers in stormy times.  They were sisters from different misters, brought together by choice and circumstance, in a world that didn't know how to break the hold evil had on it, but would never stop trying.
It was beautiful.  It was heartbreaking.  It had moments at which to shudder from anger and fear.  It had moments with which to bask in the sun while remembering with fondness.  I couldn't have asked for a better cast of characters, more memorable moments, or a clearer glimpse into a part of history I never knew.  If you're a fan of the genre, or simply looking for a story you won't soon forget, I'd highly recommend grabbing your copy today!
A Question of Country explores the migrant experience through the protagonist’s lifelong search for meaningful identity. Next Chapter, April 2020.
Sue’s current project, The Reluctant Doorkeeper Trilogy, set in Melbourne, 2100-2105, explores the problem of overpopulation and extended life expectancy in an increasingly climate-challenged world and the inhumane solutions adopted by a government determined to rid Australia of unproductive citizens.
Book 1, 28 Days, sees Emma, aged 70, emerge from a life of compliance to one of civil disobedience when the Employment Positions Portal is disabled during the final 28 days of her Government Allocated Unemployment Period.
Book 2, Next Step, follows Emma’s first year as a Trainee Doorkeeper, her role to assign appropriate positions to unemployed citizens, and her unofficial work for political change.
Book 3 will deal with a citizens’ revolution, as the population learn the truth about the role of Fully-Trained Doorkeepers.
Passionate about social justice, Sue’s goal as a fiction writer is to continue creating intrepid characters prepared to risk their lives to effect positive change in a troubled world. She intends to write for as long as possible, believing the extensive life experiences of older writers can be employed to engage readers of all ages.
Emily Windsor
Publication Date: August 23, 2021
Senara Press Ltd
Series: A Lady to Suit, Book 2
Genre: Regency Romance
When the heart is afire...
By his own admission, Lord Ernest Brook is a rake. With sapphire gaze, sinfully handsome looks and a duke for a brother, the pleasures of London have come with ease...apart from one. Ever since the gauntlet of her first wintry dismissal was thrown, the widowed Hebe Lock has stirred his deepest desires, but just what would it take to woo such a woman?
Sparks will fly.
Hebe Locke has vowed to never again fall for a scoundrel after her brief marriage to one left her broken and haunted. Now she finds comfort with paintbrush and canvas, but as a female artist in a male world, commissions are as rare as a ballroom without rakes.
A castle of enchantment.
As the heat of late summer warms the land, an ancient, moated castle plays host to a widow and a rake, both concealing passions contrary to their reputations. But as Lord Ernest awakens Hebe's desire and thaws her frozen emotions, can she hold true to her vow? Or can this rake win the one heart he yearns for?
Sensual Regency romance with warmth and wit, this tale also includes a disreputable aunt with a secondary love story, Cotswold country fairs, sinful masquerades and...a goat.
About the Author
Emily Windsor grew up in the north of England on a diet of historical romance and strong tea.
Unfortunately, you couldn’t study Regency slang, so she did the next best thing and gained a degree in Classics and History instead. This ‘led’ to an eight-year stint in engineering.
Having left city life, she now lives in a dilapidated farmhouse where her days are spent writing, fixing the leaky roof, battling the endless vegetation and finding pictures of well-tied cravats.
Hi guys and gals!
Today, I am OUT OF THIS WORLD excited to be joining Walden Pond Press as they make their way through the blogosphere with the latest release from author John David Anderson!  It's a Children's Science Fiction novel, the first in a planned duology (oh the suspense!), that while dealing with many different races, species, and planets...still has a very human takeaway message...or five.  So, if you're ready to see just what lies beyond the horizon, GET READY because we're blasting off with today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...
About the book...
The beloved author of Posted and Ms. Bixby's Last Day returns with the first book in a coming-of-age sci-fi duology about Leo, a kid trying to navigate the galaxy in order to save his family—and, possibly, the planet Earth.
When scientists discover a rare and mysterious mineral buried in the Earth’s crust, they have no idea that it just happens to be the most valuable substance in the entire universe. It’s not long before aliens show up to our little corner of the galaxy offering a promise of protection, some fabulous new technology, and entry into their intergalactic coalition—all in exchange for this precious resource. A material so precious that other alien forces are willing to start a war over it. A war that soon makes its way to Earth.
Leo knows this all too well. His mother was killed in one such attack, and soon after, his father, a Coalition scientist, decides it would be best for them to leave Earth behind. It’s on this expedition that their ship is attacked, Leo’s father is kidnapped, and Leo and his brother are stranded in the middle of space. The only chance they have is for Leo to stow away on a strange ship of mercenary space pirates bound for who knows where and beg the captain to help him find his father.
But the road is dangerous, and pirates, of course, only look out for themselves. Leo must decide who to trust as he tries to stay alive and save his family, even as he comes to understand that there aren’t many people—human or alien—that he can count on in this brave new universe.
Guys.  GUYS.  Guys! GUYS!
This story?  The one we're diving into right now?
Well, it may sound cliché, but it was OUT OF THIS WORLD!  Whether you're a die hard science fiction fan or simply a dabbler that loves a good story no matter where it takes place, this one is for you!
Leo is our little leading man, despite not knowing that it the direction his story is heading.  Once upon an EARTH, he had an ideal life.  Mom and Dad at hand, a loving yet annoying older brother close by, a house, a cat, neighbors, trees, and beaches along which to collect seashells.  It may not sound like much, but it was paradise...until one day that paradise came to be noticed by others not of this world.  It seemed like a peaceful match, sharing knowledge, technology, RESOURCES, and things went well, until they didn't and they landed smack dab in the middle of a galactic war.  They joined the good fight, making choices that were suppose to hold their shrinking family together, and managed to do so for a while.  They built a life they never asked for in a place they never imagined, but heartache came knocking once again, and this time it was out for annihilation.  Some quick thinking on a big brother's part managed to secure someone a chance to make it through, but the obstacles ahead, Leo's inability to leave them behind, and that overwhelming desire to see his family once again, may put them all in harm's way.  Good thing quick thinking runs in the family.  Good thing leading with one's heart is a virtue not a hardship.  Good thing there are still those in the universe that we can call friend...even if they may be the most unlikely of candidates.
Guys, guys, GUYS, GuYs, GUYS!  The adventure that awaits at every turn of the page will leave you feeling like you've just gazed at the most amazing starfield and can't look back down.  I loved how we got caught up on the past while still driving forward in the present.  I loved the varied cast of characters and how you could never really pin them down in the best way possible!  I loved the unexpected moments of laughter, violence promised (but not overtly so!), and awkward moments defused in ridiculous ways!  Boo's kiss...Skits rescue...Leo's inhaler...all moments among the moments I won't soon forget and YOU should watch for!  And yes, it ends with loose ends because it IS a duology, but not so many that you don't get a clear picture of where we've landed after all is said and done.  I know I'll be eagerly awaiting the second release much as Boo awaits his hot cup of gyurt!
About the book...
A 2-in-1 omnibus featuring two deeply moving and steamy novels from Vanessa Riley that powerfully combines #OwnVoices with the historical genre.
(...and with a 2-n-1 there's double to reading fun and double the sharing fun for me!  Let's take a closer look at the two titles within...)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Book 1
Widow Theodosia Cecil needs a husband to help protect her son. The former flower seller turned estate owner posts an ad in the newspaper, and no one is more surprised than she when her first love, the man she thought dead, reappears. Ewan Fitzwilliam has been at war for six years. Now, the second son of a powerful earl is back but his beloved Theo needs a husband and will not consider him. She believes

Ewan left her—in desperate straits—so she denies the feelings she still harbors for the handsome, scarred soldier. Theo and playwright Ewan must overcome bitter lies and vengeful actions that ruined their youthful affair. Theo must reveal her deepest secret in order to reclaim the love that has long been denied.

I had a hard time getting into this one initially, but once I connected, once I felt what Theo felt, once I understood where Ewan was coming from, once I knew how much each would give for the other to be simply happy, I knew I was hooked.  Seeing Theo gain her footing and take strength from the name given to her while others were still trying to take it all away.  Watching her protect those she loves with her body and soul, even to the detriment of her own happiness.  Being there when it all comes together at book's end to share in the...ending.  Hey, I'm not spoiling it for you and there is MUCH that happens straight through to the end in this one!  As for Ewan, I admit I wasn't his fan initially, especially when he kept being so easily swayed by those that would have anything but his best interests at heart.  However, once he got out from under their influence, once he realized everything he believed may have been something else entirely, he was much more likeable and easier to see as the potential happily ever after for our gal Theo.

The Bashful Bride
Book 2
A friend's newspaper advertisement for a groom nets the most famous actor in London, Arthur Bex. Shy heiress Ester Croome proposes to elope with the handsome man, who she's secretly loved for two years, in order to escape an impending engagement arranged by her overbearing family. Trying to outlive the shadow of his villainous uncle, Bex needs to marry quickly—to a woman of good character. And smart, beautiful Ester fits the bill. But a harrowing trip to Gretna Green and dangerous abolition rallies prove to be a more treacherous stage than either imagined. Infatuation and a mutual love for Shakespeare might not be enough to bind a couple looking to outrun the chains and secrets of family and the past.

Now this one, I connected with immediately.  Was it the fact that I just came off reading the prior book and was in the right frame of mind?  Was it I was just exposed to the author's writing and was eagerly anticipating more?  Was it because the leading lady was someone bookish that held a crush from afar and couldn't possibly fathom how fortune may smile upon her?  Yeah, I'm going with the third option...but don't think that fortune part was all sunshine and roses.  It began with a sprig of lavender and an answered newspaper advertisement that wasn't even hers, and ended with a rush to the altar, a stark realization of what changes were to come, and an understanding of how different things would be than what they ever thought.  Their foundation seemed to be built on truth, and yet with all the hard realities they faced, or really SHE faced, one small secret, one blast from his past might simply be enough to blow a fatal hole in what they might have, if given the chance.

I adored Ester's character.  She seemed meek and mild, but when threatened or when those she holds dear were threatened, she was a force to be reckoned with.  She went from her sweet, sensible self to a temptress to a free working woman to a voice to support the cause, with the adaptability of the most seasoned actress...all in the name of love.  Speaking of the stage, her soon to be husband, Bex, is quite literally her dream come true.  He's been her heart's desire since she first saw him on stage, but he'd be the first to tell you not everything is as it seems...and in his case, he has a secret buried so deep that he's not sure who can be trusted with it, ever.  He's not a bad man, just a man with a past he'd rather not be connected to, and despite his attempts to expunge the unwarranted guilt from his conscience, it never seems to be enough.  But perhaps if he had one person in his corner, one person that could help him show the world that he is more than the past they hold him to...maybe, just maybe he can move forward.  That determination, that pureness of heart, that ability to see every man and woman as a man or woman, all endeared him to my heart.  Even when it seemed all was lost, I still held out hope for him, not something that can be said about the male lead in most of these types of stories.

So yeah, a great leading lady and a great leading man, with obstacles they didn't foresee and a future that may just not be...but glued to the page is most certainly where YOU will be!

CRANKENSTEIN VALENTINE

Once upon a time, it was Crankenstein's favorite time of year...HALLOWEEN!  Except this year was different...and it turned everything from his favorite time to his not so favorite time when the weather didn't cooperate, the ghastly act of having the same costume is committed, and someone decides to invade his candy stash.  The horror!  I mean, it's enough to turn anyone's frown...well, bigger...at least until he's faced with something that makes the whole over-reactions, the whole absurdity of the situation...something else.  Have you ever had someone point out just how out of character YOU were acting?  Maybe you were overly tired, or HANGRY, or just plain fed up with everything, and your behavior was so LARGER than life that your friends simply had to make you see that 2 plus 2 equals 4?  Yeah, same here, with riotously fun and funny results!

A great read for the Halloween season or anytime someone might just need a reminder of how ridiculously large they blew something out of proportion and need a moment to regroup!

HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're aligning our star positions with the latest out of this world Awareness Tour making its way through the blogosphere with The Children's Book Review!  It features the first book in a brand new Children's Fiction series with a Science Fiction edge that's perfect for those readers just setting out on their own between the pages.  It's fun, it's exciting, it's a grand time in the stars with a little leading lady that readers can definitely find themselves in.  Ready or not, here comes today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...

Eudora Space Kid:  The Great Engine Room Takeover

About the book...
Eudora is a typical 3rd grader. A typical 3rd grader who lives on a 36 deck AstroLiner. In space. A normal girl adopted by what you might call… aliens. Her mom is a dog-like species named a Pox and runs the onboard jail (brig). Her dad is an octopus-like species from the planet Pow. She is a girl who has normal ambitions, like being the chief engineer on an AstroLiner.

Eudora is a girl who comes up with a plan to prove her worth by improving her AstroLiner’s engines and breaking all known speed records. Will she succeed and earn a promotion? Or will she end up in the brig? Again…

Brilliant for engaging emergent and early chapter book readers.

🚀     🪐     🚀     🪐     🚀     🪐     🚀

I can easily see this book encouraging youngsters to explore the wonders of STEM.  I can envision the fun to be had when they are testing limits, and seeing just how far they can go where no one has gone before.  I just know that those tendencies are bound to drive some adults right up a wall, but it'll also have educators going wild as they see their students reach for the stars.

Author David Horn has created a great series perfect for easy readers just stepping out on their own with characters to love, regions to explore, and discoveries to be made, all with a fun and feisty little lady leading the way!  I love how he incorporated other beings or species into the family units, introducing diversity among the stars.  I enjoyed the illustrations throughout as they brought the story to life right before my eyes and what I didn't imagine was given a blast in the right direction.  I thought the storyline was out of this world and a great way to introduce readers to this wonderful character, and what appears to be a promising series!  I can't wait to see what's next for Eudora AND friends...and I think the kiddos will be right there with me eagerly anticipating the next adventure!

🚀     🪐     🚀     🪐     🚀     🪐     🚀

About the author...

David Horn is a huge science fiction fan. While his wife sometimes feels like they live in outer space, they really live in New Jersey with their two human daughters and one doggy daughter named Trixie.

David loves reading science fiction books from both the old and new greats like Asimov, McDevitt, Scalzi, Howey, and more. He also loves reading his kids’ books like My Weird School, Just Grace, The Baby-Sitters Club, Ramona, and the list goes on.

David and his daughters also love watching sci-fi shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, Stargate, and Star Wars.

Eudora Space Kid started as stories he told his daughters at dinner. They loved Eudora’s antics in space. So now The Great Engine Room Takeover is his first book in the Eudora Space Kid early reader chapter book series. He can’t wait for you to love Eudora’s stories too.
