BLOG TOUR: Betty's (Little Basement) Garden by Laurel Dewey

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the site that aims to share something bookish with you every day of the week.

Today, we're hosting a stop along The Story Plant blog tour for a title that's a bit....unconventional.  No worries, it's not going to scar you for life or anything but it does deal with a little more than your average flora and fauna.  *ahem*   Okay, I admit it, I didn't get the reference, but when reading the description to dear old Mom, she totally KNEW just from that passage!  Yep, I'm a bit naive.  So sue me.  Anywho, moving forward, allow me to introduce today's featured tour and ebook of choice...

Betty's (Little Basement) Garden
by
Laurel Dewey

About the book....
Betty Craven is the epitome of elegance, class, and perfection. Her prize-winning garden is the envy of her neighbors; her impeccable manners and epicurean skills have made her the “hostess with the most-est.”

But all is not what it seems.

The truth is that this fifty-eight year old’s seemingly idyllic world is quickly disintegrating. Widowed and left with a modest income, Betty’s Colorado gourmet chocolate shop has gone belly up, leaving her floundering for purpose and meaning. Tied to a house in disrepair that she can’t sell, and mired in unrelenting grief for her dead son, this patriotic former Texas pageant queen comes to the shocking and debilitating conclusion that her entire life has been wasted. As that realization hits her hard between her well-manicured brow, the rebellious spirit that Betty has silently kept under lock and key, explodes to the surface.

When that happens, her staunch conservative world changes drastically, causing Betty to question every belief and opinion she’s ever had. The path she chooses is paved with secrecy, eccentric characters, toe-curling love, life-changing events, and a connection to her unconventional garden that she never could have imagined. No matter how hard she tries, Betty Craven will never be the same again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alright, so a showing of virtual hands, who realized what the "unconventional garden" had in it?
*looks round*
Wow, THAT many of you?
*-*
Well, that won't damper my spirits any.  ON with the post!
I'm going with an awards point system on this one.  Why?  Because I can....and because it felt right since our leading lady loves to be judged in the best of lights on a consistent basis.  Are you with me?  Well, ready or not, here we go!
ONE POINT - for creating a lead that is memorable in so many ways and yet so prim and proper without crossing into that crazy Professor Umbridge territory.  ~shudders~  I love her for her manners and grace even in times of great personal trials; she consistently presents a picture worthy of notice.  I love that she's not afraid of failure even if she doesn't want it broadcast to the world.
ONE POINT - for presenting a sensitive and controversial subject matter in an informative yet entertaining light.  There's nothing worse (for me anyway) than getting into a Fiction read and feeling as if I've gone to school.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVED school, but I didn't pick up a book in this genre to get a lecture, know what I mean?  The author is neither preachy nor judgmental and even allows her characters some growth on the matter (pun somewhat intended).
ONE POINT - for managing to weave a bit of a romance in between the prickly vines that the deaths and secrets have cultured.  Once again, an unexpected surprise that REALLY worked!  It was quirky enough to stand out but not so off the wall as to raise eyebrows in anything but mirth.
So that's THREE points in its favor with ZERO in the negative column....I'd call that a win, wouldn't you?  ^_^  Recommended read for adult readers of all ages due to some content and the particular garden she grows.  *ahem*
About the author...
Laurel Dewey’s writing career has been anything but predictable. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Dewey began her career working in public relations for such celebrities as Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra. Before We Kiss by Susan Mallery
Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to the site that aims to please the reader in you every day of the week, Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
As I said earlier this week, I spent the weekend in Fool’s Gold (fictitiously now, not literally…though I wouldn’t say no ^_^).  I got to know Jack and Larissa pretty well (as did you in Monday’s post), but I also met Sam and Dellina because of a reading pit stop I made a point of making.  That’s right.  I was scheduled to review the third book in this author’s recent additions to the series, and although I’d read the first, I hadn’t read the second.  Despite the fact that they can be read as stand alones from my own personal experience…I didn’t want to miss a step!  Yep.  I’m a fan…what can I say?  You’d be too if you gave it a try, if you’re not already in the know of course. (if you are, join me in a happy squee dance….and JUMP! ^_^).  So, ready to read about the latest book to capture my interest?  Pack your bags and your friendly smile, we’re heading to a small-ish town that believes in happy endings for all and that dreams can come true.  Today’s book of choice is….
(Fool’s Gold #14)
Harlequin HQN
About the book….
Former pro-football kicker Sam Ridge has notoriously bad luck with women—from cheaters to fame chasers. Still, the gorgeous brunette at the bar in Fool's Gold looks harmless—until she takes him home and he discovers a room devoted to securing a man, for life.
Dellina Hopkins never guessed that storing gowns from a friend's bridal boutique would chase away her first and only fling. After her parents died, she skipped her "wild youth" to raise her sisters. She doesn't want forever from Sam, but one night—all night—would've been nice.
His clean getaway gets messy when his firm hires Dellina to plan an event. As long hours lead to late nights, the two succumb to temptation again. Has Sam's luck finally changed? Or this time, will Dellina be the one to run?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Alrighty, so we’ve set the stage and now it’s time for the show…and what a show indeed!  From the sparks that fly after the awkward-as-all-get-out air is cleared between Sam and Dellina (picture this, a Valentine’s Day hook-up ending with a room full of wedding gowns and an escape so fast it probably broke the sound barrier) to the embarrassing situations that occur when his dear old parents come to town (no, no, really…you think yours are embarrassing?  Ha!  They win, hands down…. *-*), this story will keep you in stitches, in smiles, in hopes, in wishes, and in frustration, but only in the best way possible.

Sam has a past dotted here and there with failed relationships that amazingly, were no fault of his own…weird, right?  One of the good guys?  Yeah, I wouldn’t take that moniker from him but he’s got his flaws too…parents that over share BIG TIME, more flight than fight in his step, and oh, the inability to trust pretty much anyone outside his Score (PR company) circle.  Gotta unlock that heart big guy because you’re gonna miss the best thing that ever came your way.  Anyway, then we have Dellina who unlike Sam doesn’t really have a “checkered past” per se, but she did have heartache (parents left her and her sisters orphans at a young age), responsibility thrust upon her early (she raised her sisters and herself when all seemed lost with a little help from this AMAZING town), and the inability to let the love shine in.  Yes, I stole a line from some song or another, but it was warranted.  I get she wants to have her business be a shining star and she’s been getting along just fine thank you very much, but again with the two-by-four to the head…wakey wakey!  There’s a reason you feel all shakey quakey physically and emotionally with Sam and it’s not just that sorts-one-night stand.  *raises eyebrow*

I loved meeting our old friends again and seeing how they’ve been getting along.  Taryn, Angel, Ford, Consuela…need I continue?   It was a blast attending the party thrown for the Score guests and watching the fireworks erupt time and again.  *ahem*  The draw our potential couple had was pretty potent leading to several slip ups, a few steps forward, and several back tracks.  You really didn’t know if they were ever truly going to get out of their ways to give us that happy-ever-after we were rooting for…not that I’m saying they did or didn’t; that’s for me to know and YOU to read yourself!  ^_^

In conclusion, another great addition to a growing series that you’ll be reading about here in future reviews for some time.  Hey, I’m not completely through the current titles available and those forthcoming?  Already on the reading list.  Recommended read for adult readers; the series can be blush worthy at times but nothing too extreme and the whole thing is so sweet, you can’t resist.  Review copy from my own personal library, purchased for my own reading pleasure….as I recommend you do as well.  This title reached publication this past June via Harlequin HQN, so be on the lookout for it on a bookstore shelf or online retailer of your choosing.

Until next time…happy reading!

Good Gods!: Greek Mythology's Twelve Labors of Hercules - Choose Your Own Path!

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when BOOKISH is your middle name because, guess what?  It's MINE too!  ^_^

Today, we're featuring a title starring a figure from mythology that many know and love....and apparently is having his way with Hollywood right now.  Perhaps the movie poster above rings a bell?  Yes, it is none other than HERCULES and while Dwayne Johnson DOES strike a fetching form, err, I mean pose, as the legendary figure, today's Children's Fiction title does it justice in a NEW way.  How so?  Well, the author has taken the story of old and injected a new twist....one that enables YOU the reader to decide Hercules' fate.  Sound interesting?  Oh, but it IS!  Ladies and gents, please allow me the distinct pleasure of introducing today's featured title....

Can You Survive?
Adapted by
Brandon Terell
9780988366299

About the book....
The goddess Hera is out to destroy you. Your only hope is to gain immortality, which can be done by completing twelve perilous labors. You are the mighty Hercules. You must use your super-strength to defeat the many-headed Hydra, to escape from an angry giant, and to complete ten other amazing feats. Do you have the power and the cunning to succeed, or will your battles with mythical creatures lead to your doom? Step into this adventure, and choose your path. But choose wisely, or else...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's right!
It's a choose-your-own-path book through the mythological story of Hercules' twelve tests to reach immortality.  For those that have read the original stories, you'll have a leg up on the competition for it aims to follow the actual texts...however, for those that HAVE NOT read it before, and are relying on their Disney-esque knowledge of our hero-to-be, umm, yeah, be prepared to die.  I'll be the first to admit it, I died many MORE times than I thought I would...but that's the beauty and FUN of this type of read.  You can always go back and try (and try and try and try) again.  You have the chance to set the story straight and see your character back from the land of bookish magic to the reality that awaits him (aka a bully that thinks his fists match his face).
Oh, that's right.  I forgot to mention!  It's not a story that simply takes place back then, but a tale of a young lad transported to those times and following in the great Hercules' steps, an aspect I do believe will appeal to all but especially the boys.  I gotta say, that Hera is one bad .....person.  (*thinks stronger word*)  She has it out for him and I don't mean the welcome mat.  She may or may not be using his cousin against him in his pursuit of immortality, that's for me to know and you to find out, and if she sets her mind to something, you best believe it will not be changed by anything but sheer force of will.  Good luck Hercules!  You're gonna need it....
So, in closing, this is an adventure filled Children's Fiction title that's perfectly suited to anyone who loves a great story...and to take a little control.  See how YOU fair against both the bully and the beasties as you battle your way through task after crazy task to be able to finally call Olympus your home.  Can you make it the first time through?  Do you really want to?  ^_^  So while you're out and about this weekend catching the latest big screen version of our leather skirt glad hero, take a reading break and discover this classic tale of courage, and bravery from a whole new angle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

About the author....

When Brandon Terrell was a boy, he was tall and skinny and looked nothing like Hercules. But he was a big fan of comic books (he still is!) and superheroes. Hercules was always at the top of that list. Right next to Spider-Man, of course. Nowadays, Brandon doesn’t face serpents with a hundred heads or have the proportionate strength of a spider. He does, however, enjoy writing stories about amazing heroes and incredible adventures. He is the author of numerous books, including chapter books, picture books, and graphic novels. Brandon lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with his wife Jennifer and their two children.

BLOG TOUR: Pumpkin Time by Erzsi Deak + GIVEAWAY!

Why hello there!
Welcome back to the site that loves nothing more than to bring you bushels of bookish finds just ripe for the picking….Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we’re playing host to another tour…yes, ANOTHER one…only this time we’re back in the Picture Book arena.  It stars a title of seasonal interest that’s going to put you in a Fall mood…now that’s FALL not FOUL.  I must say, I do LOVE the Fall.  The turning leaves, the cooler temps, the crisp air… *reminisces* Anywho…today’s featured title is not just another Picture Book though as it will engage audiences beyond the story both during the read AND afterwards.  Don’t believe me?  Surely you jest!  Have I ever steered you wrong?  Uh-huh.  That’s what I thought.  Well, before we get in too deep, let’s meet today’s book of choice….

By
Illustrated by

Sailing donkeys.
Barnyard animal sports.
Dancing pigs.
Hat-wearing cows.

All things that seem pretty remarkable, yes?  Pretty extraordinary?  Something to note, catch your eye or at the very least give you pause?  Yeah….everyone but Evy.  Our young leading Miss is intent on something that’s for certain, but it’s not on the goings on around her.  Why I do believe a heard of buffalo could migrate to her area in covered wagons, wearing coveralls, dancing the Macarena, and she’d miss the whole parade!  So…just what has concentration so hooked?  Ah, that IS in indeed the question now isn’t it…and the part of the story that makes it an interactive experience for readers!

As you follow the story, each page greets you with some curious happening, a wonderful illustration and the question of “what is Evy doing” in need of an answer.  That’s where YOU come in.  You’re invited to explore the page, giggle at the goings on, notice the small details and chuckles inserted throughout, AND figure out just what Evy is doing from image to image.  It might be for example, tending her garden or maybe working in the kitchen, but there is some change of activity for her from page to page all leading up to a grand celebration.  Think you know what it is?  Ah, you very well might…and you might be just off base, as was I my first read through.  Guess what though?  It was JUST as enjoyable with the actual ending versus my preconceived notions.

So, in conclusion, a colorful tale that’s sure to put you in the right frame of mind for the upcoming season while allowing readers of all ages the chance to learn AND have some fun.  Once you discover just what Evy is up to, you might just be following in her footsteps in more ways than one (though the one certainly requires adult assistance for wee ones!)…and if not, you’ll still be no worse for wear because really, you DOESN’T enjoy a good picture book?

BLOG TOUR: Help for the Haunted by John Searles

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place to be when you're on the hunt for your next bookish conquest because we've always got the lead on something of interest.  Take today's title for example...

It comes to us via TLC Book Tours (Hi, Trish!) and William Morrow Paperbacks, and stars a Fiction title that can be best described as haunting.  It's perfect for the reading time of year we're fast approaching if you like seasonal reads (you know, creepy in October, thankful in November, etc), but works perfectly fine anytime you're in the mood for a little mystery and a dose of the other side.  Ready to greet today's guest and featured title?  Here we go!  Turn your night lights on and hunker down, today's book of choice is...

Help for the Haunted
by
John Searles

About the book...
Sylvie Mason’s parents have an unusual occupation: helping “haunted souls” find peace. After receiving a phone call late one snowy night, they are lured to an old church on the outskirts of town, where Sylvie falls asleep in the car and is awoken by the sound of gunshots.

Orphaned on that night, Sylvie comes under the care of her reckless, distant older sister, still living in the rambling Tudor house that guards the relics of her parents’ past. As she pursues the mystery of their deaths, Sylvie’s story weaves back and forth between the time leading up to the murders and the months following, uncovering the truth of what happened that night—and the secrets that have haunted her family for years.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a curious read indeed.  From the moment you turn the first page til you reach book's end, you bounce between past and present, puzzling your way to a future best described as uncertain.
The parents calling reminded me of a recent (semi) film, The Conjuring.  For those that have seen it, you know where I'm coming from; for those that haven't, it is based on the true story of the Warrens.  The Warrens were/are a couple of paranormal investigators to sum them up only they're not like you see on television; they're old school, demon casting out, bringing peace to tortured souls type of folks.  Whether you believe in what they do is entirely up to you, much like the Masons in the book.  The children know what their parents do, they endure the taunts and torments from kids at school, and when things go horribly wrong one snowy night, they band together to bring about a justice they see fit...but is it REAL?  That's for you to decide as you put the pieces in place.  Moving forward...
There is much to consider in this book from start to finish.  First off, its name.  The title itself can be interpreted several ways, the obvious being the souls the parents were aiming to help, but as you read, you see it in a new light.  Perhaps the haunted needing help are not those that linger in between, but those left behind; those facing the loss and the truth day by day in the here and now...such as Sylvie and her sister. Next, we have the characters themselves.  Are they really just victims of circumstance?  Even from the beginning it's easy to see that one of them isn't at the very least...but just how far does her betrayal go and perhaps the better question is, WHY?  Let us not forget what happened to Dot, their babysitter, in the opening chapters. ~shudders~  Finally we come back to the overall setting....the house or rather the basement.  Lights that go on when they've been burnt out for ages.  Noises that occur when no one dares to step through its door.  Knowing what's down there to a certain degree but never being able to make sure things are still as they were because it was their parents domain and only they knew how to keep it.  *cue creepy spooky music*
In conclusion, an interesting read that will satisfy fans of multiple genres.  From Fiction to Mystery, Paranormal to New Age, you've got a smattering of it all penned with a skilled hand.  Recommended read for older teens through adult readers; whichever way your beliefs bend, there's no need to give the kiddos bad dreams before their time.
