Books - yeah, with so many in the house, there are QUITE a few in the bedroom and of course they rank as a favorite thing

Stitch - yes, the blue cutie/trouble maker of Disney fame....Mom picked up a fairly large stuffed doll of him a few years back on our trip down there.

Shoes - a girl can never have too many...and I am a proudly practice that believe. ^_^

Change my hairstyle - for the longest time it was the classic bob style with bangs, then without bangs, then just long, or as Mom would say "no particular style"....would like to shake things up a bit

Work with a publishing company - *ahem* well, it is something I'd like to do one day.... ^_^

4 Things You Don't Know About Me

I love khaki - it's a staple of my wardrobe, except on the weekends when I can wear jeans.

BIG fan of musicals and their movie counterparts - that means everything from High School Musical to Legally Blonde the Musical is pretty much included.  I can't help it!  The music is just so fun and catchy....on the other hand....

I love a good concert - and have seen multiple acts including Linkin Park, No Doubt, NSYNC, Sister Hazel, Aerosmith....need I go on?  ^_^

I don't like coffee - there I said it....and don't give me that "it's flavored, it doesn't taste like coffee" line....it ALWAYS does! *blech*

Welcome to another installment of Taste Testing Tuesdays here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!  Taste Testing Tuesdays was inspired by 'Teaser Tuesdays', a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.  This week it is appearing on a Thursday....why?  Well I could say that I was just that cool and the day of the week matters not to me....but in all honestly, I totally forgot to post one this week!  Anywho...this post aims to correct that...

On the menu this week ... my choice in celebration of Banned Books Week and an eBook set for review this October with all the spooky fun to be had.  Shall we have a taste?

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!

For some reason, this week seems to be escaping me.  How so?  Well, the days are flying by and somehow or another I totally forgot to do a 'Teaser Tuesday' post yesterday, go figure.  Though not the end of the world, it still irked me when I realized I had deprived you, my readers, of a tease from my current reads...since I know you oh so look forward to them (...hopefully...).  No worries...I'll remedy that tomorrow.  Speaking of time "slip sliding away" (if you didn't catch that tiny music reference I can't help you, sorry....if you did, way to go...), today's review focuses on a recently released title starring a character with a similar yet unrecognized problem.  Ready to read all about it?  Here we go!  Today's book of choice is....

Here she comes just a walkin' down the street singing, do wa diddie diddie dum diddie d....oh, wait a second, no...that was someone else.  *peeks around corner*  There she is!  Josie Brooks.  Feared by many, befriended by few (okay, so none really, but maybe family), single for life (seemingly) due to choice and circumstance.  You see, Josie is the person companies bring in when they are looking to revamp, and by revamp I mean down size and by down size I mean cut costs and by cut costs I mean size up the situation and determine who and what can be cut.  She's carried many names over the years most of which were warranted by the situation (hey, you can't help feeling a bit of anger towards the person that recommends you are being no longer viable) but said behind her back.  No problem for Josie since she has built herself a steel exterior and a wall around her heart to keep any personal attacks at bay.  No problem that is until now...

You see a few months ago, Josie Brooks happened to attend the Collector's Convention and while knocking the block off of one Cassandra Higgins (the main character from book 1 in the series), happened to pick up a snowglobe of her own.  A beautiful rendering of a park area rich with plant life and a flowing river....wait, a flowing river?  How in the world did the maker of the globe include THAT feature?  It's tranquil peace and charm call to her almost as if it was meant to be hers and a simple cash exchange later, it is.  At home, it sits on her shelf collecting dust, the magic seen in the moment of purchase no longer casting its spell....until one day, the sound of running water disturbs her daily activities.  Why would that be disturbing?  Well, its not coming from the sink, the tub, or the pipes....it's coming from...the globe!  How is that I wonder?

With little time to explore this unexplained "miracle" of sorts, Josie pushes it to the back of her mind as she focuses on the job at hand.  This job however is hitting home more so than usual, knocking a chink or two from her carefully constructed walls.  What is it about this particular job that has her in a tizzy?  These new found feelings along with an unquenchable thirst strike her as two of a handful of things mysteriously out of sorts....and the solution to her problems comes from the most unlikely of places.  There is much to learn on the path of life and Josie is about to play the ultimate game of catch up.

Book two in the Snowglobe Series and my verdict...as good as or even better than the first!  As in the other book, the mysterious snowglobe still plays a role in the story but this time rather than hiding in the back corners, it sits in the passenger seat to help guide our leading lady....and guide it will, just perhaps not on the most direct course.  You learn why Josie is the way she is and how our perceptions of situations can change over time.  Whether it is age, experience, or a new revelation, things are not always what they seem at face value; it's a lesson hard taught as well as hard learned.  The characters introduced within the story each play a role in Josie's life but also have lessons of their own to discover.  There are happy times, funny times (hey, the great Marshalleon deems it so....LOL...one of the characters uses writing as an emotional outlet), sad times (you will need tissues for one part), and everything in between, but the river of emotions flowing through this book is well worth following. 

Overall, it struck me as a book about the heart warming changes that can take place if you just give life, in all its vibrant colors, a chance. Josie was not the only one transformed in this book...far from it. Each character was changed in one way or another, but all for the better. From the frustrating losses (jobs, life, trust) to the triumphs both professionally (new jobs, new career paths) and personally (feelings, nothing more than feelings...*ahem* okay more than feelings, so much more), the resounding message I heard was that of a fairly famous quote...No man is an island.



Need a hug?

 We all need someone, something to hold on to. Look at our social networks....they are social for a reason. People like to interact and whether you are the outgoing town crier type or that bookish girl over there on the fringe (*raises hand*), we all need our own version of the spotlight. The audience can be grand in numbers or only a select few, either way, so long as it fits the person, they are both equally satisfying.  In living that lesson by example, the author's characters create an Encouragement Club...something of which I think we could all use at one time or another to get through the bad times and celebrate the good.  Based not on the religion of this person or that, but on the belief that all people at one time or another need encouragement and sharing that experience with others is just another way to create lasting bonds of friendship.

This title hit shelves everywhere on 09/21/10, so be on the lookout at your favorite book store or online site.  The first two chapters of the book are available at the publisher's website for you to sample.  A word to the wise...in my own reading experience, I was drawn into this book more so later on than the beginning, so consider it with an open mind.

Well, it's one day behind us in the days of the week we usually associate to work, yesterday's post featured a great little mystery with a chance for you to win a copy all your own, and today we are continuing the bookish and dog loving fun!  Sound good?  I sure hope so because you really don't want to miss out on the title reviewed today as it's the perfect fit for dog lovers round the world as well as those curious about how their utilization in rescue efforts came to be...in my opinion at least.  Today's featured book of choice is....

Susannah Charleson...dog lover, pilot....search and rescue team member?  Yep.  You read that right.  Who did you think made up the amazing teams of human/animal search duos around the country...paid professionals?  Well, professional they are after the rigorous training both they and their canine companions are put through (you wouldn't believe how many hours are put into it and the scenarios practiced!), but payment comes more in a successful mission than it does in actual dollars.  This is not a "task" someone chooses because they want to be rich....it is a path chosen because they want to DO GOOD for others.  Susannah Charleson felt that draw and began working as the third point in a search and rescue team.  This book is the story of her journey from assistant to full fledged handler and the handful of a partner she choice (or perhaps that chose her) to accompany her on this journey....

Inspiring, educational, touching....and FUNNY!  All words perfectly suited to describing this wonderful book.  I knew the moment I saw the cover that I had to read it one day.  You see, despite the fact that I have several wonderful, would-never-trade-them-for-the-world fuzzy friends of my own....I've always wanted a Golden Retriever.  Why?  I'm not certain...I think I've always loved their look, their demeanor, and the way they seem to be the perfect fit as a family dog...although that last bit could be a applied to ANY dog that that chooses you as their forever home.  But I digress....before I get too into it, let me answer a question you may be harboring....


Why is this book being featured on a Tuesday you might ask...or at least you would if you regularly visit the site.  You see, normally this day belongs to the 'Taste Testing Tuesday' post and while it may post as well today with a sampling of my current reads (gotta share the bookish fun), the book we are focusing on today has stolen the spotlight on more than one occasion.  It seems that being a dog lover I can totally see my pups in some of the situations the author describes as Puzzle is growing up and the laughter over it can be shared with anyone and everyone.  For two of the more memorable ones shared in a teaser post, click here or here.  Don't feel like clicking around the site?  Fine, be that way.  Just kidding.  I couldn't let this one go without one last share from it's fabulous pages.  This one has to be read with the enthusiasm the scene calls to mind.  Imagine the utter joy a child feels when seeing a new toy and then getting to play with it....that's the level of excitement needed for this quote.  It's a few sentences, but totally worth the share.  Here we go....

Puzzle's nap aboard the airplane has refreshed her, and she has entered the house all bounding energy and curiosity.  It takes her only moments to put her nose to the butt of every Pom that rushes forward to inspect her, to flush a cat from the laundry basket, and to knock over a row of plastic bottles I have set aside for recycling.  Now she has suddenly discovered the stuffed lobster that's made the trip with us, and she takes the over-large toy in her mouth, rushing up to little Sophie with it, shaking it meaningfully:  booga-booga-booga, lobster-booga!  Sophie honks and skitters, her dark eyes wide.  -- pg 41

ROTFL!  -wipes tear from eye- Whew!  See what I mean?  Just imagine the situation...bounding yellow puppy, bigger than the Pomeranian's jumping around making sure it's known she has this large red toy under control, no worries, you see, you see?  *laughs some more*  Okay, I think I've composed myself enough to continue....

In a nutshell, this is a wonderfully touching look at canine search and rescue teams straight from the source...both handler AND dog!  Author Susannah Charleson takes you behind the scenes of events that draw their own amount of attention and tells it like it is. From the head lining stories of national tragedies to the small town disappearances big in their own way (because let's face it, a missing person in our town is just as important to us as one being broadcast across the nation...am I right?), readers are welcomed into their "special club" and given a front row seat to the highs and lows experienced in their daily calls.

You get to meet teams with years of experience that show us what a seasoned "sniffer" can do, as well as meet, greet and watch as one pup grows from precocious puppy to certified search and rescue dog...with all the antics along the way. Yes there are quite a few antics, some that I've mentioned, some that I haven't.  They not only provide more detail and depth to the story, but also show that Puzzle is underneath it all a regular dog.  Her daily interactions with Susannah and her crew of Pom's (lovably cute and funny Pomeranians), her training sessions and choice of motivation, and so much more go into creating the full picture view of this fuzzy girl.  Though Puzzle only truly gets into her first actual search at book's end, the journey to get to that said search is a story in and of itself making this a memorable read. Highly recommended for those pet lovers as well as anyone wanting a better understanding of all the work that goes into creating a successful search and rescue team...

New Tricks by David Rosenfelt, Review + Contest!

Today we delve into a book light on the uber-hard-to-figure-out plot lines but heavy on the overall enjoyment...and look!  It's part of a series!  *YAY!*  Combining the best of the mystery genre with a story heavily infused with doggy goodness....is it any wonder why this one caught my eye?  The book of choice for today is....

New Tricks

Andy Carpenter, attorney at law....for dogs!  Well, okay, so he doesn't just cater to canine clientele, but he has earned a reputation for successfully defending our furry friends in several recent cases so he might as well add that to his list of case types accepted.  One bright and sunny morning, Andy is called in to the Judge Hatchet's office to discuss a new case.  Thinking the worst, I mean best....he figures it's a pro bono case since his recent quota in this category is zilch, nada, niente, goose egg...well, you get the picture.  In this case, it's more of a pro "bone" case....

The case he is assigned is a custody battle over one son of a champion show "man"....Waggy.  Odd name for a son, no?  Oh, wait....did I fail to mention that he's a Bernese mountain dog puppy?  My bad...  Waggy is being claimed by two parties, after his owner, Mr. Timmerman, is murdered for reasons still under investigation...his son Steven, and his wife Diana.  Oh, wait, scratch that....now it's only one party as it seems one of these two "blew up" at the situation...oh, now it's back to two again, now one, now...oh good grief!  This puppy is more highly sought than the last donut in the break room on a Monday!  Lucky for this little guy, Andy is a pro with pups and along with his helper, Tara (a golden retriever, no less), is more than qualified to take care of him while things get sorted out.  Shouldn't be long now, what with the way people keep up and disappearing...then again, who's to say who will be next?  There's a lot more at stake here than someone's claim over Waggy (though that's enough...he's so cute!)...something that people are willing to kill for.  Andy's job...to find out who, what, where, why and how...before it's too late!

YAY!  Let me just say that I totally enjoyed this book.  At just about 370 pages, it read surprisingly fast and kept my interest held fairly well.  The bonus aspect of short chapters also helps out those that are like me and dislike stopping mid-chapter if at all possible.  Now to talk about characters....

Andy Carpenter.  Hmm, how to put this...if he were real, I mean like actually existed outside of literature, he'd be someone I'd love to hang out with.  Snarky but fun....full of quick wit and humor...doesn't know when to quit, but in a good way....faithful to his girl even though they are states apart, a dog lover...  Hold on, I think I'm developing a character crush here.  ^_^  Seriously though, when I first started reading the book, it took me a second to get into his mindset, after all, he was a completely new character to me...but it didn't take more than a chapter or two and I was right there 100%.  Just try NOT to like this guy...no really, try!  I'd love to see how that turns out...especially with Marcus on the job...

Who is Marcus?  Glad you asked.  He's one of those characters that's there but not.  He doesn't feature largely in the main gist of it all until later on and even then, he more of a supporting role, but let's just say that if someone is supporting you, you know, backing you up...this is the guy to do it.  His presence in the story may not be huge plot wise, but it is felt in a big way.  (You'll have to read it to see what I mean....just try not to cross the guy unless you can run far, hide well, and....okay so yeah, he'd still probably find you, so just don't.)  Now on to the storyline...

I totally KNEW who the person behind all the shenanigans was. *fist pump*  No seriously!  Even when the author tried to make me change my mind with all the evidence presented, I still kept saying to myself...nope, sorry, I think it's really the-character-that-shall-not-be-named.  (What, you didn't think I was going to spoil it for you now did you?  *tisk*tisk*)  Now normally that would irritate the living day lights out of me, but in this case...not so much.  You see I was having such a great time with the story and the characters that it made little difference, plus it wasn't like it was handed to you on a platter or anything; you still had to work for it.  What does all this amount to?  Well, for starters, a bit of a discovery on my part...

In reading this book, I came to a realization about the 'mystery' genre that seems to be true for me at least....it's transparent.  Now before you bring out your mystery books to pelt me with, hear me out.  It's not in an I-know-EXACTLY-how-the-book-ends-from-page-one sorta way, but more in the sense that you know what's going to happen before it truly does. You're almost a step ahead of the lead characters if you're paying any sort of attention to the story. Take this book for example....the moment I read the portion that said the dog's current location was revealed the local news, I KNEW something was going to happen at Andy's house. I mean, laying out a welcome mat in this case would have been less obvious. Trouble just seems to follow little Waggy for some reason that I shall NOT reveal here...or confirm if it's really about him or something far more mysterious... *cue dramatic organ music*

All in all, a fabulously fun mystery read, great for a relaxing weekend or anytime you are simply looking for a little bookish fun.  Recommended for fans of the genre, but also those looking to just step into it...and no worries on the fact that it's one in a series, you'll never even know...it's that seamless.  I had such a fun time with this one, you can be pretty sure you'll end up seeing more reviews on this series in the future.

Yay!  This looks like a great adventure....can't wait to read about the shifting rooms and just what sinister plot the kids have to defeat.  Keep an eye out for this one as it's set to hit shelves 09/28/10!

Oogy by Larry Levin

Have I ever mentioned how fab the folks at this publisher are?  So many great opportunities to read and review titles in a wide range of interests...including this one!  I think little Oogy there is so cute...it's heart breaking what happened to him initially, but so much love given and received in spite of it all.  Can't wait to start reading it.  Oh, and it's set to release this October..in case you were wondering...

Title is intriguing and the story sounds promising....but it may be a bit before you see it on the site due to the October posts.  Rest assured, come November, you can read all about it.

Okay for starters...no, I'm not a boy.  I was one of the first 100 people to request an ARC copy of this funtastic title after seeing a random tweet from Penguin.  It intrigued be on so many levels.  First, I have the first book in this fun series. Second, the site is dedicated to highlighting bookish fun for male readers...something that is often pondered by both them as well as the adults in their lives.  So I say to you...ONLY for boys?  I think not....BUT, definitely something that may spark their reading interest.  Can't wait to dive into this....

So, um...I didn't actually request this one, they kind of just sent it.  Of course, I appreciate it but since I'm not currently an aspiring author, I can't say that it will have a lot of practical application for myself.  Perhaps for you though, my readers....I know a lot of you are authors-in-waiting...we'll see what happens with this one....

So...um, yeah...let's just say the book didn't quite make it to me and despite the USPS's "sincere apologies", they are not in my good graces right now.  That being said, still be on the lookout for this new title/author because the book sounds like a lot of fun.
