RRR presents... THE SINGLE MUMS' BOOK CLUB by Victoria Cooke - GUEST POST!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're picking up a stop along the Rachel's Random Resources tour for author Victoria Cooke's latest release, The Single Mums' Book Club...which just so happens to be celebrating its BOOK BIRTHDAY TODAY!  From the sound of things, it's gonna be a riot...in the BEST way possible! So, let's take a quick look behind the cover, and then READ ON as the author gives us what we all want to know...the INSPIRATION for the book! Ladies and gents, our title in the spotlight...

The Single Mum's Book Club
by
Victoria Cooke

About the book...
Three friends, three single mums, one quest to find love…

It’s 8:30am and I’m already utterly exhausted. My son has lost his football boots, my daughter is ready for school dressed only in her vest and knickers, and of course, my 1-year-old has filled his nappy for what feels like the tenth time this morning.

As for my husband? He’s decided marriage doesn’t suit him, and well… buggered off.

All hope of ‘me time’ has but dwindled to sipping half a glass of wine whilst shouting after the kids. But everything is about to change.

I’m taking control of my life! I’ve joined… a book club.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. ‘Wow… live a little.’ But my fellow book clubbers, Amanda and Janey, are my lifelines. They understand the daily struggle because they’re mothers too.

And in between the prosecco, Doritos and googling everything about Mr Darcy on SparkNotes, they’ve convinced me to go on a date with my boss.

A single mum of three looking for romance… what could possibly go wrong?

A gloriously funny and relatable read for anyone who just needs a little more ‘me time’. Fans of Why Mummy Drinks and Has Anyone Seen my Sex Life? will snort with laughter at this utterly hilarious and heart-warming read.

The Inspiration for The Single Mums' Book Club
by Author Victoria Cooke

🕮

A while ago, I was chatting to a few mums I know about books and one of them suggested we start a book club. A few bottles of prosecco down and this seemed like a great idea. We all loved reading and it would give us a chance to get together and chat about books and whatever else — some scheduled fun. Fast-forward a couple of years and all we have to show for it is a WhatsApp group with nothing more than a few messages along the lines of ‘can you tell X to come home because dinner is ready’. But, it did give me an idea. We are a group of busy mums who tried and failed to make a regular meeting a thing but the women in the book needed it more than we did. Divorce, losing a spouse and trying to manage the daily grind alone can take its toll so the book club was formed. If you’ve read it, you’ll know they’re not the best at staying on-topic but the book club is so much more than that. It’s a support network, a cure for loneliness and a chance for these women to feel like individuals again and not just ‘mums’. We all know that reading is a form of escapism; it’s a way to feel something whether that’s joy, fear, sadness or hope. For the women in the book, reading is also a way to identify with a character or theme that helps them open up and move on from something that’s holding them back.

First and foremost, this is a romantic comedy so there is a romantic element with all the ups and downs as you’d expect but I wanted the theme of friendship to have a strong presence too. I also wanted to explore the idea of family and what family means in today’s society Vs some people’s idealistic notions.

I’ve set the book in a fictional village in Cheshire because I wanted to create my own world and really loved the idea of a physical river connecting Stephanie and Edward. The Cheshire countryside is beautiful and I wanted to make sure I included some descriptive scenes as a backdrop but being a Manchester girl, couldn’t resist a trip or two into my favourite city for some contrast.

Hopefully, I haven’t given too much away here but if you’ve read the book and want to ask something specific — you can find me on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook and ask away.

RRR presents... WAYWARD VOYAGE by Anna Holmes - GUEST POST!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we've teamed up with Rachel's Random Resources for a stop along their current tour starring a book that will take you right out of our own time and back to the 18th century like it was only yesterday...for better, or worse!  Let's set sail for today's title in the spotlight...

Wayward Voyage
by
Anna Holmes

About the book...
Anne is a headstrong young girl growing up in the frontier colony of Carolina in the early eighteenth century. With the death of her mother, and others she holds dear, Anne discovers that life is uncertain, so best live it to the full. She rejects the confines of conventional society and runs away to sea, finding herself in The Bahamas, which has become a nest for pirates plaguing the West Indies. Increasingly dissatisfied with her life, Anne meets a charismatic former pirate, John 'Calico Jack' Rackham, and persuades him to take up pirating again, and she won't be left onshore. The Golden Age of Piracy is a period when frontiers were being explored and boundaries pushed. Wayward Voyage creates a vivid and gritty picture of colonial life in the Americas and at sea.

~~~   GUEST POST   ~~~
~~~   with author Anna Holmes   ~~~

Might Wayward Voyage float YOUR boat?

I imagine my ideal reader as a young woman. If that’s not you, that’s OK. It doesn’t fit the profile of most of my beta female readers who’ve responded enthusiastically to Wayward Voyage. Nor is it my partner’s profile – a critical reader who is neither female nor young.

When I grew up there was no such thing as Young Adult genre. I vividly recall childhood favourites, then I see myself as a teenager during rainy lunch times at school, book in hand, or I picture myself lying on a beach on summer holidays, tanning and reading at the same time.

Anya Seton’s novels were favourites, with Katherine my top pick; Mary Stewart titles (Nine Coaches Waiting got my heart thumping) and many Daphne du Maurier books (who could resist Rebecca?). I know I read some Georgette Heyer, though can’t recall titles. I loved Gone with the Wind with Scarlet and Rhett and that whole sweep of history.

With Wayward Voyage I aim to create a story that can be enjoyed by readers today.

Set between the years 1704 and 1721, Wayward Voyage is a coming-of-age story more brutal than many. It follows Anne aged six emigrating with her family from Ireland to Carolina, to her time roving the West Indies with Jack Rackham. We know little about her actual life, and between the few facts we do know, I have constructed my narrative. Anne’s, Mary’s and Jack’s stories play out within the broader historical context.

World building is important to me. I love researching and populating my imagined world with believable characters. Some of my research was home based (books aplenty, internet). Visits to the National Archives in London allowed me to read letters from Governor Woodes Rogers and the record of the pirates’ trial (which is now available online). Then there was experiential research. I travelled to South Carolina to get a feel for the landscape, visiting plantations as well as museums in Charleston and Washington DC. A few years ago, I volunteered as voyage crew on a tall ship, the Lord Nelson, operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust. That week, sailing between the Canary Islands, learning to handle ropes and going aloft was so special I didn’t want to come home. For all the hardship that would have been part and parcel of being at sea in the eighteenth century, I could easily imagine the attraction of setting your own rules far away from authorities. Especially for women.

And that’s another thing. At a time when women’s lives were so prescribed it is extraordinary that both Anne Bonny and Mary Read ended up in Jack Rackham’s gang of pirates. Mary needed to earn her living and being employed as a soldier or sailor paid more than being in domestic service. Women did go to sea – many in disguise. Susanne Stark has written an excellent book about this, Female Tars: Women Aboard Ship in the Age of Sail. But why did Anne run off to sea? In my story, she is a girl who wants more and does not want to be confined to a predictable life as a farmer’s wife with a brood of kids. There must be something more and she wants to find it… But does she?

On my website https://www.annamholmes.com   you will find links to Twitter and Facebook, and you can sign up to receive a monthly newsletter on the Contact page. I am keen to engage with readers and welcome questions. The Book Club page has links to further reading and there is a PDF with suggested questions and discussion topics.

If you enjoy reading Wayward Voyage, I would love you to leave a review on the retailer’s website and recommend to friends.

Bon voyage and happy reading.

About the book...
Perpetual daydreamer Liz Buxbaum gave her heart to Michael a long time ago. But her cool, aloof forever crush never really saw her before he moved away. Now that he’s back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar—and maybe snag him as a prom date—even befriend Wes Bennet.

The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbor might seem like a prime candidate for romantic fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz’s butt since they were kids. Yet, somehow, Wes and Michael are hitting it off, which means Wes is Liz’s in.

But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz noticed by Michael so she can have her magical prom moment, the pair grow closer, and Liz is forced to reexamine everything she thought she knew about love—and rethink her own ideas of what Happily Ever After should look like.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buxbaum and Bennet.
A match made in heaven or teenage heck?
It's the classic girl meets boy, boy is neighbor of girl, they drive each other crazy until one day a scheme with mutual end benefits unites them, and POOF...they live happily ever after.  Umm...okay, so I'm surprised I typed that LAST bit with a straight face!
Seriously, everything before the dots is TRUE, and a riot to read.  Liz tries SO HARD to get Michael to notice her in THAT way in time for her romantic fantasies to comes true, and in time for that ever coveted prom date.  Even when she's down in the dumps because her special milestone moments are missing someone very dear to her heart, she still has her heart set on the end prize.  You know she has it bad when she enlists the help of the ever irritating Wes to get her an in with her potential man...but things have a way of backfiring when it comes to a love that's worked so hard for.  It's not that it's not worth it, but some things shouldn't be so difficult...especially if it's the right someone.
Enter stage left, or should I say parallel parking from his left, Wes Bennet.  His name conjures images of long help adoration from characters of literature...but in reality, he's a typical teenage guy.  He's got the looks, the attitude without being overbearing (to everyone except Liz, of course), and the swagger.  Surface level, eye candy with enough brains to get by...or at least that's the image Liz held of him.  Turns out, when her plan to get Michael is kicked into action, getting to know Wes is like opening a door to a wardrobe you never thought to walk beyond.  He has depth.  (Gasp.)  He cares for others.  (Double gasp.)  He can make her laugh, while still helping her out of tough jams.  (Alright already, I've gasped enough!)  In short, he's much more than she perceived...but the fact that's it's HIM wigs her out so much that she may not see past her own set interests in time to score the BIG win.  Do she and he get together...or do all her rom com dreams comes true as scripted?
You'll have to read it to find out!  Sorry, not sorry...it's not worth spoiling!  In the end, I loved the characters more than I thought I would, and the overall story really cast it's spell on me...also, I now have a burning desire to binge watch my entire rom com collection, but that's beside the point.  Aside from the romance, I was really touched by how to author tackled a hard subject like losing a parent.  She showed the heart, and hardship of the situation, while giving our gal Liz some realistic ways to not move on from it, but live and move forward with it.  Oh and one more thing, watch for the movie quotes at the beginning of each chapter!  Loved that little add in!
~~~ EXCERPT ~~~

To The Fair Land is a mystery thriller set in the eighteenth century. In 1789 an anonymous book about a fictitious voyage to the South Seas is a publishing sensation. Struggling writer Ben Dearlove decides to find the author everyone is talking about. Before long it is clear that he has stumbled onto something much more significant than the search for a reclusive writer. Ben finds himself up against people who will lie, steal and even kill to stop him discovering the truth behind the book.

Ben’s search takes him from the coffee houses, theatres and book shops of London to the docks and taverns of Bristol. Along the way he becomes aware that two men – a Mr Hay and a Mr Beale – are shadowing him. In this scene he is riding along a country lane when two horsemen overtake him.

The road passed between two high hedges. Ben had not gone far into its cover when he heard the rush of hooves. He glanced back. The two gentlemen were in a hurry all of a sudden. He pulled over to let them pass. The first rider wheeled across his path. Ben’s horse, an otherwise placid hireling, shied in alarm. While he struggled to calm the frightened animal, the second man drew up.

Stand!” he yelled, glaring at him with angry red eyes.

Ben gasped in recognition. Beale smirked and plucked at his sleeve. Mr Hay clawed at him from the other side. He felt himself slipping. In a moment, he would be unseated.

Before that moment came they were overtaken by the farm workers, the men’s boots heavy with mud from the furrows. There were three women, their identical moon-faces reflecting womanhood in all its stages – grandmother, mother, daughter. Their skirts were hemmed with the muck of the byre, their sleeves rolled up over arms brawny from dairy work. An empty lunch basket swung from the girl’s arm, but the cider jar was still doing the rounds.

They halted, their faces showing a mix of curiosity and suspicion. Hay thrust a hand into his coat pocket, drew out a piece of paper and brandished it at them. “Here’s a warrant! It’s official business.”

They goggled at the document, inclined to be awed by it, yet eager – the girl in particular – to see a villain apprehended. A gentleman of the road perhaps. That she thought Ben dashing enough to be a highwayman was clear from her awestruck gaze.

Pass on now!” Hay waved the paper.

One or two of the men obediently started to move off, but inspiration had come to Ben. “I won’t go back to be flogged and hung from the yardarm!” he yelled. “I won’t go back to serve under mad Cap’n Jack! The midshipman he threw to the sharks off Port Royal had a quicker death than I’d get!”

Why, ’e’s a runner,” the man with the cider bottle said slowly.

Aye, and that’s the press,” growled another.

Come to tear honest men away from their wives and sweet’arts,” shrilled the old crone, who was well past the age when the loss of a sweetheart might concern her.

You dog!” Mr Hay made an angry swipe at Ben. It was not the best move he could have made in the circumstances.

Help! He’s murdering me!” Ben yelled, adding for good measure, if not consistency, “I’d rather die here than go back to run the gauntlet… and be keel-hauled and… and lashed at the grating!”

Whether or not all of these punishments were likely to be inflicted simultaneously in the Royal Navy he had no idea. Neither did his audience, but they sounded dreadful enough. The country folk had identified Mr Hay and his friend as representatives of that hated institution the press gang, persecuting a man who had been driven to desertion by his sufferings. With one voice, and that an angry one, they tossed aside basket and bottle and flung themselves at the officers.

 'A good giggle. In this day and age, it's fun to read something so...'refreshing'!''

- Craig Smith, Award-Winning International Bestselling Author of The Wonky Donkey

''Sorry, Walter the Farting Dog. I think it's fair to say that this is probably the best picture book about toots I've ever read. Take my advice and put away your scruples. You shouldn't turn up your nose at this.''

- Betsy Bird, A Fuse #8 Production, School Library Journal

''Wish I had thought of it first!''

- Adam Rex, Author/Illustrator of On Account of the Gum

When it's time for Jessa the fairy to proclaim what kind of fairy she wants to be, she accidentally says ''toot'' instead of ''tooth!'' Now she'll be in charge of finding all the toots from all the bottoms in the world. This is not exactly what she had in mind..

👃   💚   👃   💚   👃   💚   👃

Jessa has it all figured out.  When her time comes to wish for her line of work, she wants nothing more than to be a Tooth Fairy.  It is a noble, respected, and rewarding line of work, so who could blame her!  Only problem...when she herself loses a front tooth prior to making the wish, and for those of you that have lost a tooth before, you know what I mean before I even say it.  Try missing a tooth and says sister susie sitting on a thistle and listen to what you get.  The words just don't come out 100% clear because you can't quite make the "THE" sound.  So when Jessa goes to say her wished for profession, it's not TOOTH that is heard crystal clear, but TOOT...hence her new line of work in a particularly gaseous business.  Does she let it get her down?  Initially, yeah...I mean, she was hoping to work with lost tangible things from the mouth not green clouds from rear ends...but with a little prospective and the help of the retired fairy she will be taking up the mantle of, little Jessa is able to hold her wings up with pride and be the best darn TOOT FAIRY you ever did see!

I admit, it's a bit off putting when you're reading a rhyming book about toots...and rather surprising that there's a fairy tasked with gathering them, or at least spotting and paying for them (wait a minute, paying for them?  I know a few people that should be downright rich from this!  HA!).  No doubt the story is certainly creative, and the illustrations are both lovely and hilarious all at once, but the real magic I found was in how even with the silly nature of everything, a message was imparted.  It reminds us and teaches wee ones to make the best of situations, no matter off putting or ridiculous they might be.  They can and should always strive to be the best they can be!

Title: CHEESEMAKER DURDSDEN

Author: Mark Huffman, Dawn Davidson (Illustrator)

Pub. Date: May 4, 2021

Publisher:  Brown Books Pub Group

Pages: 32

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, TBD, Bookshop.org

Cheesemaker Durdsden could hardly be called a cheesemaker, with how bland, rubbery, and flavorless his cheese tasted. And so, in order to better his skills and silence the critics, he went in search of any and every cheesemaking technique he could learn. That way, he could make cheese to be envied by every cheesemaker, and savored by every cheese enthusiast. Now he's back with new skills, and some suspiciously delicious--deliciously suspicious--cheese to prove it. How could a man with such boring cheese before now make this tasty cheesy treat? You'll never guess what fabled creature holds the secret to Cheesemaker Durdsden's sudden success!

🧀   🧀   🧀   🧀   🧀   🧀   🧀   🧀

The stink fest continues from our first title, but in a new, slightly nauseating, yet rather clever way!  Instead of chasing gaseous clouds of green gas, we're on the hunt for marbled cheese...or more specifically, Durdsen's cheese.  You see, he started out with humble beginnings and mundane cheese that not even the mice wanted to fight over, but after his adventures in the great wide world, he returned with a blend the townspeople couldn't keep their hands off of!  I didn't initially blame them because hello, tasty cheese is yummy...but after the big reveal of how it's made came around, I just didn't have the stomach.  Grant it, it's clever, it rhymes, and kiddos will have a hoot with it...but anyone that might take it too seriously or has a weak stomach, maybe should leave this fine fromage to those with greater fortitude.

In short, you'll laugh, you'll cry (or at least have your eyes well up from the smelly cheese!), you'll crave this dairy-licious treat, and then perhaps rethink it again.  The story is creative, the illustrations a blast, and it's definitely something you won't soon forget!

About the author...

Mark Huffman writes about our shared human experiences, which is a pretentious way to say that he writes about toots and bottoms and food. He prepared for writing children's books by spending much of his early life as an actual child. Unlike other children's authors he might name who have spuriously claimed the title, he is a real doctor. He lives with his family in Texas.
