And in between the prosecco, Doritos and googling everything about Mr Darcy on SparkNotes, they’ve convinced me to go on a date with my boss.

The Inspiration for The Single Mums' Book Club

A while ago, I was chatting to a few mums I know about books and one of them suggested we start a book club. A few bottles of prosecco down and this seemed like a great idea. We all loved reading and it would give us a chance to get together and chat about books and whatever else — some scheduled fun. Fast-forward a couple of years and all we have to show for it is a WhatsApp group with nothing more than a few messages along the lines of ‘can you tell X to come home because dinner is ready’. But, it did give me an idea. We are a group of busy mums who tried and failed to make a regular meeting a thing but the women in the book needed it more than we did. Divorce, losing a spouse and trying to manage the daily grind alone can take its toll so the book club was formed. If you’ve read it, you’ll know they’re not the best at staying on-topic but the book club is so much more than that. It’s a support network, a cure for loneliness and a chance for these women to feel like individuals again and not just ‘mums’. We all know that reading is a form of escapism; it’s a way to feel something whether that’s joy, fear, sadness or hope. For the women in the book, reading is also a way to identify with a character or theme that helps them open up and move on from something that’s holding them back.
First and foremost, this is a romantic comedy so there is a romantic element with all the ups and downs as you’d expect but I wanted the theme of friendship to have a strong presence too. I also wanted to explore the idea of family and what family means in today’s society Vs some people’s idealistic notions.
I’ve set the book in a fictional village in Cheshire because I wanted to create my own world and really loved the idea of a physical river connecting Stephanie and Edward. The Cheshire countryside is beautiful and I wanted to make sure I included some descriptive scenes as a backdrop but being a Manchester girl, couldn’t resist a trip or two into my favourite city for some contrast.

About the author...
Victoria Cooke
grew up in the city of Manchester before crossing the Pennines in
pursuit of a career in education. She now lives in Huddersfield with
her husband and two young daughters and when she's not at home
writing by the fire with a cup of coffee in hand, she loves working
out in the gym and travelling. Victoria was first published at the
tender age of eight by her classroom teacher who saw potential in a
six-page story about an invisible man. Since then she's always had a
passion for reading and writing, undertaking several writers' courses
before completing her first novel, 'The Secret to Falling in Love,'
in 2016.
Her third novel, Who Needs Men Anyway? became a
digital bestseller in 2018 and her debut, The Secret fo Falling in
Love was optioned in 2020.
