Until Next Time

How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.

Oh woe is me…where to even begin with this one!  I just finished it last night and a rush of excitement (and that’s a BIG deal with ebooks for me no matter the story!).  There’s no way you can make it anywhere near the end and put it down before finishing….it’s just THAT good!  When you do finish?  All you can do is turn all Oliver Twist and say “Please sir/ma’am, may I have some MORE?”.

The world created here is not so far fetched; in fact it’s our own and the His realm.  That’s right, God, the angels, saints and more play a starring role in this series but before you go writing it off as simply a Christian Fiction addition you want no part in (because I know some of you may be thinking that….and I understand!  It’s not generally my genre either…), this is first and foremost a YA book; it just happens to have these members of religious sects included in the cast, which makes sense since we are dealing with angels and souls.  Trust me when I say though, this is not your typical representation.  Don’t believe me?

Were you ever taught that Heaven had a library where young angels and warriors studied up on the lives of those on Earth? Have you ever envisioned Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John playing a card game for candy bars dressed as pirates?  How about a room full of new souls taking their first flight on their newly granted wings?  Or better still, St Francis transforming into any numbers of animals…including a talking lizard?  Like I said, totally original in my book and I must say, a lot of fun.  It made that aspect of the whole equation totally accessible in my eyes.  You weren’t presented with merely a black and white situation of either being a believer or not to enjoy the book’s content but rather a largely gray area that allowed your imagination to take flight while your beliefs were welcome to stick around.  Now on to the characters….

While the Heavenly crew was phenomenal, our leading ladies and men were a treasure to behold.  Let’s start with our original two, shall we?  Emily and Matt…the given names of our two souls created to help glean information about the people of Earth and why they seem to keep going astray.  It seems that the concept of ‘loneliness’ is perplexing not only to us humans, but to the angels as well!  To get that information, an angel (Emily) and warrior (Matt), the light and dark sides of one perfect combination (as in they were made for each other, a bond that will come into play many times before this book and series are through), were created to send down to Earth when the time was right, righting a few wrongs while gathering the info sought.  That time…is now (or should I say that FIRST time?).

Sent down to Earth, they become Elizabeth (aka Liz) and Daniel…but their Heavenly thoughts, memories, and training are gone with the wind.  All are locked up deep inside their souls, inaccessible while in their earthbound shells until a later more pertinent time much to their frustration.  You see, they aren’t being born into the world as most souls are, they are stepping into lives already in progress that ended too soon just as the departing soul is stepping out.  The people they inhabit had bigger things to accomplish in their young lives than time and circumstance allowed, so for all intents and purpose, they are being given another chance to finish what was started.  Everything is new while at the same time familiar creating a confusing mix when the two meet…add to that the multiple times their souls leave their bodies for a Heavenly meeting where they again can’t access their human thoughts fully (in the beginning at least….dun dun dunnnnn) and yeah, is there any doubt the frustration that even angels would feel in this state?  Not in my mind….

The lives they lead are rich and full; even though short in length (again).  We get to see quite a bit of Liz’s side of things but very little of Daniel’s….a fact I wish we could remedy because his time seems like it would have a whole other feeling to it (perhaps an idea for a counter series?).  We meet Faith, her sister by chance (an orphaned girl around her own age), who runs the pub Liz inherited when her family died.  She’s s headstrong gal, full of vinegar (as I’ve heard people say before) and a perfect balance to Liz’s quieter, more level headed demeanor.  Their leading men… a matched set as well.  Enter Charles and Jason….

Ah yes…first questions first; how can that be all the leading men when I’ve already mentioned her “other half”, Daniel aka Matt?  Well, you see there’s this little thing called free will and matters of the heart and….it’s a lot of Earth bound nonsense at first, but it makes an impact that will change the way things unfold later on in this story and from the sound of it, those yet to come.  Anyway, back to the leading men…. appearing as strangers in the night but become much more as time marches forward.  Charles is an equal match for Faith though not by station in life as we discover later on, but certainly where it REALLY matters.  He’s a loud and robust gentleman whose traveling days may seem curiously charming, but he’s running from a past that is still hot on his heels.  Just what are his secrets?  Oh but telling you would ruin the surprise!  Suffice it to say that the town of Dublin from which they hail is not waiting for their return with open arms…either of them….

Jason is a part of whatever went down leading up to their great escape as well, though you wouldn’t guess it at first.  He comes off as much quieter and gentile despite his inability to focus on anything else when Beth (Elizabeth, just the name he prefers to call her) is involved.  His is smitten with her as if their souls were intended for each other alone …though she knows as well as we differently…or do we?  As I said before, matters of the heart are complicated, even newly “owned” ones.  Nobody said this trip to Earth was going to be easy.  Back to the man at hand, he has a past as well, just as tangled and as many shades of dark as Charles’ which will be revealed with time but my first impressions of the young man still hold true.  I believe the term ‘diamond in the rough’ would apply well here….and may catch on one day (hehe, sorry…inside joke if you’ve read the book ^_^)…but see what you make of him on your own as you’ll have a decision to make later on…

Last but not least, we can't end this post without a brief look at the cover art.  Feel free to scroll back to the top to take a gander.  Nice, right?  Though slightly dark and foreboding, I think it plays well for the story within.  The cracks and lines to me represent the hardships this new soul goes through, almost like characters lines.  The heart...well obviously a representation of the soul within but I find it interesting that it is displayed outwardly almost like a badge of courage or something.  Again, if I was Pooh Bear and sitting in my thinking spot I might say that it perhaps is meant to show how she is of two hearts...the one within and the one she's in.  Confusing?  Slightly....but it makes more sense once you read it (well, in my mind anyway... ^_^)

To sum things up, it’s a book that will make you take a step back and see the world with new eyes.  Something to rekindle the innocence in your soul and perhaps realize how fragile our world is at times and why it needs us, all of us as its protectors; not simply for the environment but of each other as well.  It reminds us that we are all here for a reason and despite how difficult the road might be at times, there is someone backing us up all the way.  The idea of our “other half” is nothing new, but the knowledge that that missing piece will eventually be found is comforting even if delivered in a fictional story.  ALL of this PLUS an amazing story filled with adventure, mystery, romance, and a promise of more to come….it scores high in my book and I think it will in yours too!  Book two is already on my wish list and if I know my readers, you may want to start clearing a spot on your own.

Recommended read for teen readers and beyond due to content; it’s not vulgar or crass but the topics dealt with a time or two and the instances sensual in nature procure it from the “child” category in my mind.  This ebook is available now from Tribute Books and should you be inclined to race off and purchase a copy of your own to devour (and you WILL devour it), here are a few fine online retailer options to get you started in your quest…

Not just another vampire book...

Hi there!
Welcome back to the Friday edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place to visit, stay, and play any day of the week when books are on your mind.

Today’s post features a title I finished reading on Monday, just in time for its official release on Tuesday.  (WHEW!)  From an author many know and love (though I had yet to sample her work…BIG MISTAKE…on my part!), comes a new trilogy that’s sure to garner attention from her current fan base as well as those just entering the fold (*raises hand*).  The last go round featured the fey; this time….vampires.  Now don’t go moaning and groaning about the fast amount of vampire literature now available in the Young Adult world….each has its place and this one MAKES one for itself.  Ready for the big reveal?  Here goes.  Today’s book of choice is…

Blood of Eden, book 1:
By

From the back cover of my ARC…
In a future world, vampires reign.
Humans are blood cattle.
And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

My vampire creator told me this:
“Sometime in your life, Allison Sekemoto, you will kill a human being.  The question is not IF it will happen, but WHEN.  Do you understand?”

I didn’t then, not really.

I DO NOW.

Sounds good, right?  Oh but it WAS!  If book two was out right now, I’d be racing to grab a copy hot off the presses…despite my ever loved and ever growing TBR Mountain (yes, mountain….no measly piles here…hehe).  As I previously stated, I have yet to indulge in Ms. Kagawa’s infamous ‘Iron Fey’ series (a blunder I shall remedy as soon as possible), though I’ve heard MUCH buzz about its greatness…but this one I can totally vouch for.  It features those creatures of the night we know and sometimes love but in a different light (no pun intended).

In the city of New Covington, there is a hierarchy.  The vampires sit squarely at the top; their pets (favored humans…of use) and minions just below. Next we have the Registereds….those humans somewhat protected by the vampire lords and also those “blood cattle” referred to in the opening up there (yeah, animal blood just doesn’t work for these vampires).  The Rabids sit firmly at the bottom of it all as they are an abomination of the vampire kingdom created due to the false hopes of one vampire master of old with somewhat good intentions and human scientists. Just above them, are the Unregistereds…the likes and ranks of which include our leading lady, Allison Sekemoto.

Allison along with her ragtag group of fellow teens, forge an existence in the Fringe…a place just inside the Outer Wall with no protection from other “gangs” nor those bloodsuckers that still seek a little “challenge” in obtaining their meal.  It’s a one for…well, one situation so many years after the Red Lung plague decimated human life as we know it.  One day when scavenging for food, Allison hits the mother load…a hidden haven of enough goods to last her crew for several months; the only problem is how to get it back. This trove is beyond the questionable protection of the Outer Wall landing it smack dab in Rabid-ville (okay, so there’s no “ville” but it is the place the Rabids for the most part call home)…a place no human wants to be caught ESPECIALLY after dark; at least not unless you enjoy BEING dinner in lieu of eating it.  *gulp*  Without the stash, her and her crew will be on the losing end of starvation….but in getting it, will she pay the ultimate price?  *dun dun dunnnn….*

Okay, so needless to say, she DOES pay the ultimate price as far as becoming a vampire (no spoilers there, it’s right in the synopsis pretty much) but there is so much more to it than that both before she is Turned AND after.  Her Turning is a choice, albeit the lesser of an already grim future, thanks to the outcome of several scenes of violence in which she pretty much loses everything she has already, assumedly making her decision easier.  Notice I said assumedly.  Her faith in humanity may not run deep but her own humanity does and choosing to die or “live” as one of them is not an easy pill to swallow.  The struggles she faces afterward both emotionally, physically, and Hunger wise are very telling of her character, her ingrained personality.   Many would simply let go and enjoy their new freedoms; Allison partially of her own accord and partially due to the guiding hand of the Master who sired her, chooses another road.

I love the never ending balance she strives to have in her life.  She puts herself in situations that most would avoid out of necessity (or intelligence…hey, I’m not saying I disagree with her choices, but they’re not always the brightest option) or self preservation, and ironically comes up just as dirty on the other side.  There’s a big issue with prejudice shown here, surprisingly so when you consider this is predominantly a paranormal tale.  One wouldn’t expect a larger issue to be discussed let along dealt with but it is done so with grace, showing both the ugly (mostly ugly) and not-so-ugly faces of the “beast”.  Though Allison’s character is a hoot to discuss as she kicks butt frequently in the story, let’s move along to a few others that are certainly worthy of mention.

From her human life, we have her former friends (and that is applied in a few senses of the word which you’ll discover when reading).  Lucas was their leader and a potential love interest for Allison (considering the slim pickings, she chose wisely), while Rat was well, a rat though not literally.  His methods were often shady and he was always out for himself while stirring up as much trouble as possible…hence the name was fitting.  Then we have Stick, Allison’s dependent friend…and someone you may feel sorry for, but trust me….several chapters into the book, you won’t.  He’s needy and whiny and afraid of everyone and everything.  He won’t stand up for himself nor anything that is his and so it’s amazing he’s survived this long in the Fringe….oh wait, that’s probably because Allison was helping him.  Despite her tough exterior, her heart of hearts has a few soft spots and Stick fit firmly into one of them.  Moving on to after she is Turned…

We have Kanin.  He’s her sire but there is much MUCH more to him than you may at first guess; I shan’t spoil it for you but just keep an eye on this “moral” vampire as he shows her the ropes and so much more.  On the other end of the vampiric spectrum, we have Sarren.  ~shudders~  Just saying his name will creep you out especially after Allison’s first odd encounter of this psycho vamp…and definitely after we see his true colors later on.  *-*  There's a cast and crew of other nasties that she encounters, but I'll let you meet them for the first (and maybe last) time as you read.

Out of the land of the undead and into the human world, we have Jebbidiah Crosse’s group on their quest to find Eden.  Who or what it is will be explained as the story continues but it’s best said that even though this man (part religious zealot) is an odd cookie in the eternal cookie jar of life, he’s a needed one for the strength he wields and the faith he inspires.  Zeke (aka Ezekiel) Crosse on the other hand is equal parts believer and doubter. Taken in by Jeb as a lad after his family was killed, he was raised with his teachings of absolute right and absolute wrong…but his heart feels and believes in a gray area, one he can’t openly admit.  Their paths crisscross so many times over that it’s easy to lose track of the strands, but hang on….it’ll make all the difference.  Along with the GRAND must come the not-so-much, but here it’s fairly self contained and not an issue I share.

In this case, the not-so-grand falls to matters of the big guy upstairs.  I can definitely see some religious groups or strongly religious readers having an issue with a bit of the content.  There is some talk of God; His existence or lack thereof, His compassion for His creations, and whether or not His arrival is forthcoming.  I myself am one of those readers that for the most part can suspend my own belief system whilst delving into an author’s created world…it IS fiction after all; no one said it’s to be the new basis for life as we know it.  I understand some may feel too strongly against this sort of thing (and those probably are the same folks that avoid books with vampires altogether) and that is their right to exercise, but if you’re like me and simply enjoy a good story…this is DEFINITELY one to put on your wish list.

In the end, this is not just another vampire story.  This a tale of a girl that happens to now be a vampire trying to do right by herself and those humans that surround her seeking a better tomorrow while keeping a tight grip on the demon inside.  It’s a story about prejudice and belief, faith in humankind and giving others a chance…but still being ready to grab that katana and do some damage if necessary.  A GREAT start to a promising trilogy, you best be certain that I’ll be watching for the next installment.

Fill the break in your day with reading!

Why hello there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place to be when you’re looking for avid readers such as yourself because you know we always tend to flock together…like birds of a feather.  ^_^

Today, we’re stepping back into the land of the storybook, but this isn’t your typical tale.  You see, it’s a collection of short stories if you will, meant to enchant the mind, brighten your face with a smile and tickle the funny bone…and really, who couldn’t use a little of that now and again?  Without further ado, may I present today’s book of choice…

Favorite Stories from Chirp Magazine
By
Various authors as published in Chirp Magazine

This collection of short stories gathered in one bound book offers young readers the chance to tickle their imaginations for a few minutes or a few hours.  I can see it being a favorite choice for adults looking for a quick bedtime story to send their children off to dreamland….though a few of them may spark their creativity a bit too much if slumber was the intended result!  From monkeys to horses, bears to armadillos, the characters represented in this book vary far and wide.  There’s bound to be at least ONE story that contains a favorite animal from your household.  Speaking of favorites….

It’s hard not to walk away from a collection with a few that caught your attention over others; in this case, I have a handful.  Armadillo’s Special Day …the artwork and the story work wonders to cover a range of feelings over a two page spread.  The surprise on Armadillo’s face (as well as his animal and plant friends) is contagious in both extremes of the emotion.  Spike and Fluffy Get Dressed Up ….again with the artwork!  Spike the hedgehog is adorable and Fluffy, though a caterpillar (a critter I’m not normally fond of) shines as he searches for a costume in time for the party.  The end result…too cute!  Two Heads are Better Than One …takes us from monkey siblings competing for fun to utilizing their skills to help another; great read for those with brothers or sisters!  Finally we have Manfred Meets the Tooth Monster…combine a little bit of ‘Monsters, Inc.’ with a Tooth “fairy” you certainly weren’t expecting and you get a marvelous little read sure to have you cheering along.

In short, though each story is unique, they share a common bond in not only their length but their intentioned lessons.  From my perspective, they teach readers to utilize their resources whether it is that box of building blocks in the corner or the noodle in your head while enjoying the world around them; to be creative and think outside the box whilst respectful…and always leave time for a little fun. It’s the small things in life that add up to the big moments we’ll always remember; short stories like this give us a chance to make a memory in the moment with those we hold dear….from the tall to the small, this one is good for one and all.

Recommended read for all ages.  Young ones will be giggling up a storm as they follow along the antics covered in each tale while older readers will take refuge in a shared chuckle as well as the lovely artwork that resides on every page.  This book is available now at a bookstore near you.  Review copy received courtesy of Owlkids.  (THANKS!)  For more information on this title as well as their full catalog, feel free to visit them online, like them on Facebook or follow along on Twitter.

Until next time…happy reading!
