REVIEW + GIVEAWAY starring... Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

We're heading back into the vivid world author Neal Shusterman created, once upon a time as we host a spot on the Rockstar Book Tours event rocking the blogosphere! It's a trilogy that was memorable, forceful, and action packed, creating a legion of fans that never knew what hit them, and would never forget all they learned, all the experienced, all they felt between those pages.  After finishing the final book, a reader can always go back to the start...but what if there was more?  What if we could dive further into the people, places, and events that shaped the books we loved?  Now THAT would be rather delightful...

GLEANINGS: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe

by Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofía Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman

RELEASE DATE:  November 8, 2022

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, Kindle, Audible, B&NiBooks, KoboTBD, Bookshop.org

The New York Times bestselling Arc of the Scythe series continues with thrilling stories that span the timeline. Storylines continue. Origin stories are revealed. And new Scythes emerge!

There are still countless tales of the Scythedom to tell. Centuries passed between the Thunderhead cradling humanity and Scythe Goddard trying to turn it upside down. For years humans lived in a world without hunger, disease, or death with Scythes as the living instruments of population control.

Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofía Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman—returns to the world throughout the timeline of the Arc of a Scythe series. Discover secrets and histories of characters you’ve followed for three volumes and meet new heroes, new foes, and some figures in between.

Gleanings shows just how expansive, terrifying, and thrilling the world that began with the Printz Honor–winning Scythe truly is.

Haven’t started the Arc of a Scythe series? Start your journey now!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So.
Here we are.
Back in the Scythe-dom and ready for action.
But...if you haven't indulged in the trilogy, I highly suggest you backtrack to the start.
What's that?
Oh, I get it...who am I to tell you what books to read, let alone in what order to read them?
No one.
Just a fellow reader that has been there, understood that, and still begs you to listen!
This is a collection of stories FROM that world.  If you don't have the foundation to add them into, you've got a 75% chance of being lost...and lost is somewhere you don't want to be when dealing with those who's job is to essentially keep the population in check...if you get my drift.  Here, fans get what they never knew they wanted, and yet craved in some way nonetheless.  We get to see Scythe Marie Curie as she navigates her new role, while be anything other than accepted by her peers.  We have the chance to experience the events on a certain "All Hallows Eve" night that changed many things.  We see the egos and artistry, watch the growth and decay, feel the tension and call to movement that may not be in anyone's best interests.  We are privy to so many new things we never knew to desire, and yet now, having them in our grasp, couldn't fathom the trilogy being without.
So yes, indulge in this book, but first binge read the first three to plunge yourself into this fascinating world where death is an artform, and the right to practice it, a privilege few will achieve.
BOOK SPOTLIGHT on... Love, Loss and Life In Between by Suzanne Rogerson
Welcome back to my site!
You may notice things going a little differently around here, and I can explain why. For some reason, Blogger took exception to my last two posts, placing them under review because they thought they were spam. They reviewed them, and allowed the posts, but it scared the daylights out of me! I mean, I've been blogging for 13+ years, and I've never had that happen. I haven't changed my blogging style for many moons either, so I couldn't/can't fathom what triggered it...but, in the spirit of constantly improving, and trying to appease the virtual gods, I may trim a few things that seem more promotional than intended, hence my opening. I usually said "hi" and welcome to "the name of my site", well...I'm going to assume you know where you are (LOL!), and greet in some random way. Post titles may not say the tour group I'm working with, but you'll know by post's end and by checking out the pictures included in the posts. Like I said, they will be minor changes to you, existential to me, but I'm here to spread the word on my adventures through the pages, and I'm hoping to still be here for many moons to come. Nuff said, now...where were we...oh yes...
Today, we've got the BOOK SPOTLIGHT shining on short story anthology that deals with, well...pretty much what the title refers to; love, loss, and life in between.  It sounds like a moving collection that covers a variety of heart breaking situations, and yet I can't help but feel like there is hope to be found within as well.  I'll let you be the judge....
by
Suzanne Rogerson
This collection of short stories gives a glimpse into life, love, loss, and the inexplicable in between.
Judge's critique - ‘Unusual, emotional, warm, surprising — a warm, unusual story. It moved me when I read it.’
A Cat-Shaped Hole
About the author...
Suzanne lives in Middlesex, England with her husband, two teenagers, a crazy cocker spaniel and an adopted cat that thinks she’s the boss.
Suzanne’s writing journey began at the age of twelve when she completed her first novel. She discovered the fantasy genre in her late teens and has never looked back. Giving up work to raise a family gave her the impetus to take her attempts at novel writing beyond the first draft, and she is lucky enough to have a husband who supports her dream - even if he does occasionally hint that she might think about getting a proper job one day.
Now an author of four novels including the Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy and her debut, Visions of Zarua, Suzanne hopes the dreaded ‘W’ word will never rear its ugly head again!
She loves gardening and has a Hebe (shrub) fetish. She enjoys cooking with ingredients from the garden and regularly feeds unsuspecting guests vegetable-based cakes.
She collects books, is interested in history and enjoys wandering around castles and old ruins whilst being immersed in the past. She likes to combine her love of nature and photography on family walks, but most of all she loves to escape with a great film, binge watch TV shows, or soak in a hot bubble bath with an ice cream and a book.
~~~ EXCERPT ~~~

Extract from Under the Mistletoe by Hayley-Jenifer Brennan (The Mistletoe Mixtape)

The extract I would like to share with you today is from the sixth story in The Mistletoe Mixtape anthology: Under the Mistletoe by Hayley-Jenifer Brennan. This story whisks us off to South Korea where we meet English Language teacher, Paige. Not only is she trying to deal with the loneliness of spending the Christmas season so far away from her family back in Ireland, but she’s also struggling to cope with her lazy, self-centred colleague (and boss’ son), Jihoon.

In this extract, we join Paige as her preconceptions about Jihoon are thrown into question when he surprises her on Christmas Eve.

I wandered up the stairs and towards the office on Christmas Eve morning with a steaming mug of tea in one hand and my phone in the other. I was multitasking – triple checking the schedule for the following morning and also texting my family and friends at home to wish them happy holidays in case I forgot the next day with all of the expected chaos that four kids who were special enough to have their own camp would bring. Christy’s present was tucked into the paper bag that hung on my arm, alongside the race car. I hadn’t decided whether I was giving it to Jihoon or not yet. I didn’t want to make an ass of myself, but his story had left me surprisingly touched.
I was glad when my keycard decided to be gracious that morning and it beeped to signal that I was granted permission to enter. I was startled to see that Jihoon was there before me, standing at his desk and scribbling something with fixated ferocity. I turned so as not to interrupt him and couldn’t help the gasp that escaped me. The room was covered in decorations and fairy lights.
‘You like it?’ Jihoon asked. ‘I thought about what you said and figured the teachers should have at least one day to feel festive.’
‘I love it.’ My voice came out as a whisper. ‘You even got real Frozen decorations.’
‘Yeah, no offence, but the knock-off Olaf in the snow-globe is terrifying.’
I nodded, taking in all the decorations. ‘It’s, um, it’s nice to see you on time for once,’ I remarked, unsure of what else to say.
‘I came early to decorate the office and the classroom for the kids coming tomorrow.’ He said it so nonchalantly that my brain took a couple of seconds to register it while I was staring at the sparkling fairy lights.
I spun on my heel when I finally processed what he had said. ‘You did? For the kids?’
‘Yeah.’ He looked up from what he was writing and cocked an eyebrow. ‘Yours were pathetic.’
I scoffed, unsurprised at the sudden wave of disappointment I felt. ‘Great,’ I said. ‘Thanks.’
There was a long pause as I made my way to my desk, but I felt his eyes on the back of my head the entire time as I walked.
‘What?’ he said after a moment. ‘That’s it?’
‘I’m sorry?’ I placed my things down on my desk and turned to look at him, not bothering to cover my confusion. It was too early for this.
‘I just insulted your decorations. Normally you practically fight me for much less.’ He looked just as confused as I felt.
‘I’m not in the mood today,’ I said, a pang of loneliness hitting me when my gaze fell on a wrapped gift he had sitting on his desk. I missed home today more than usual.
‘Did I do something wrong?’ he asked. ‘I mean, aside from existing in the same space as you?’
I sighed, giving in. ‘My decorations were fine.’
‘Oh, well, it’s no fun now.’ He folded his arms. ‘You’re just placating me.’
The office smelled damp and I knew it was cold, but the disappointment, loneliness, and now irritation warmed me from the inside. ‘No,’ I said. ‘I mean it: my decorations were fine. The kids won’t even notice – they’ll be too busy running around the place.’
‘I didn’t even realise you had put up decorations, they were so pathetic,’ he said, smugly.
Fury boiled in my jaw, and I stomped down the office, ready to give him a piece of my mind for constantly deeming my work and just straight up not doing his. I was so focused on getting there that I didn’t even make my usual trip over the taped down cables. When I arrived at his desk, I took a deep breath and angled my chin up, ready to let five months of frustration out on him at once, but the glint in his eyes stopped me dead.
‘Wait—’ I shook my head, realisation smacking me like a sledgehammer. ‘You actually enjoy annoying me?’
His eyebrows floated into his hairline. ‘You think I stick around the office for the coffee?’

But can Calder pick up his old life when the powers within him have been stirred? And why does he feel such misgivings about his return?

All three stories give readers a tantalising glimpse into the fantasy worlds created by Suzanne Rogerson.

All the Way Home

§

By Sandra Bunting

A FEW PEWS UP THE HAT BOUNCED, turned from side to side and ruffled slightly in the breeze that swept in from the open doors at the back. Aurèle couldn't take his eyes off it. Some niece or other from Montreal he thought. A face was not visible, only the wisps of feathers adorning the headpiece. Others were no doubt taking in the flowers, looking at relatives from out of town in their sophisticated dress, or glancing impatiently at the door where the wedding party would soon start up the aisle. But Aurèle, with a wistful smile on his face, was fixated on the hat. It was a stunning blend of natural tan and black, at times coloured a deep purple by the church's stained glass windows. It wasn't that Aurèle was a follower of fashion. Not at all! With the feathers he was transported back to the woods during partridge hunting.

And so he let himself daydream about one of his favourite activities. In partridge season, he would get up before dawn, the light of a few stars streaming through the shadowed forms of trees out the window, his old bird dog stirring, sensing adventure. The dog was named Monsignor, after this very old priest before him now who held court in the large village church. Aurèle had nothing really against the church. He would go to baptisms, weddings and funerals like all the rest of them. But when it came to Sundays, he preferred to be in the woods or down by the river. After a week of hard work, it was a balm to be out in nature, to breathe in fresh air, to absorb the wisdom of trees. This was more to his liking than listening to the pontificating of the 'sometimes meddling' Monsignor Aubain, or the assortment of young priests who came and went. His wife however, God bless her, had not allowed her husband to publicly call the dog by that name (what would the neighbours think?) and so it was shortened to Sig, sometimes Siggy. The dog didn't seem to mind the shorter form of its name and always responded eagerly to a call or a command.

Aurèle felt a pain in his ribs and found himself back again on the hard pew, his wife having given him a poke.

"It's your son that's getting married," whispered his wife. "It's not just any old sermon by Monsignor Aubain that you can tune out on. Pay attention."

Aurèle tried to focus on his son Omer and his beautiful bride Matilde but to tell the truth he wasn't interested in rituals and ceremonies. It would be his turn later when he would be asked to play the fiddle and entertain the guests. Some would dance wildly to his tunes after all the speeches had been made, the meal had been finished and alcohol began to flow. Everyone enjoyed the old style music then, even though they massacred the dancing.

"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride." Monsignor Aubain liked this part of the ceremony. All eyes were on him for a moment with his white embroidered robes almost as spectacular as the bride's dress! And then the spotlight switched to the newlyweds.
