Reviews by Crystal presents... MARTIMUS by Seelie Kay - EXCERPT + AUTHOR INTERVIEW!

Feisty Lawyers Series (Book 5)
by
 Seelie Kay
Release Date: May 29, 2019
Publisher: Extasy Books
Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Romance
(four flames)

About the book...
  Martimus. An underwater habitat dedicated to pharmaceutical research. Martimus. A facility that staffs its vessel with inmate labor. Martimus. The place where inmates visit and never return. Agent Cate Creighton is in love. Unfortunately, as the Agency honeypot, she is knee-deep in an assignment that tests the bounds of her new relationship. It seems eight socialites have gone missing, all wealthy twenty-somethings with influential parents. No one seems to care until a former vice president’s daughter disappears. When the vice-president shares a tale of false arrest, a broken promise of deportation, an illegal diversion into a private prison, and an alleged trip to an unwater habitat called Martimus, Cate and her colleagues must find a way to follow the same path. In other words, they must enter the right prison, meet the right fixer, wind up on Martimus, and hopefully return in one piece. And it looks like Cate is the perfect bait. That doesn’t sit well with Cate’s lover, former U.S. Navy Seal Warren Hazelton. He intends to protect her until death ‘til do they part. Fortunately, another possibility appears, in the form of an MISix agent who has interfered in one too many Agency operations. Tillie Henderson owes them and they are all too willing to serve her up on a plate. It’s race against time as the Agency attempts to lure their adversary out of hiding and into their somewhat ambiguous trap. Maybe then Cate can finally focus on love.

Excerpt from Martimus...

Tom cocked an eyebrow. “Warren, you’re a former Navy Seal. Isn’t there some sort of limit on the amount of time you can spend under the sea before it starts to seriously impair your health?”

Warren frowned. “Usually two weeks. After that, the lack of exposure to the sun and the constant high pressure oxygenated environment would begin to take a toll. There’s also a psychological impact. Think sensory deprivation. Your senses are out of whack because you’ve been dumped into a soundproof sponge. There is no normal sensory stimulation. No sunlight, no sound… Even taste and smell become compromised. Coming back to the real world would be an adjustment.

In addition, those underwater stations are small. People are right on top of each other. Things we take for granted, like privacy, hot showers, home cooked meals, are in short supply. That can create anxiety, depression, and stress. No way he served that sentence consecutively. He had to take a break in between.”

Warren gazed at Tom. “That environment is more hostile than a prison. You may not be in danger from other inmates, but you are putting your life at risk. Three months sounds like way too much time to be stuck underwater though, especially if you’re not leaving the station for deep sea diving on a regular basis. They must be breaking up the time somehow, otherwise they’d have a pretty tough situation on their hands. A lot of contract workers would be headed to a rubber room. It would be extremely difficult to survive a month, much less three, down there.”

Could they be treating the inmates like guinea pigs?” Hope asked. “Testing their limits? Tracking actual survival rates?”

Warren sighed. “Possibly. It’s not like they have to answer to anyone. They are located in international waters. No country in particular has legal oversight. I imagine they could be doing anything they want without recourse. Unfortunately, when the prospect of a reduced sentence is dangled in front of some people, they grab it, damn the consequences. If one or two inmates suffer some sort of harm or die along the way, they chalk it up to collateral damage.”

And who’s going to know?” Cate shook her head. “Someone dies, they probably flush them down a chute into the deep sea and they become shark chum. No evidence left behind.”

Hope cringed. “God, that’s kind of evil. But that still doesn’t answer our original question. Where the hell is Fuzzy? Has he already served out his sentence? Has he been released, and if he has, where the hell is he? He’s the one we need to find. He could have a lot of the answers.”

That lack of governmental oversight is troubling,” Tom said. “If Cassie McIntyre is down there, I can’t believe the CIA isn’t all over it. At least, our government should be doing a welfare check through the Red Cross or something.”

Warren grimaced. “Unless no one knows she is down there. Think about it. They are on the bottom of the ocean, more than two miles under the sea. It’s not like you can just go down there and knock on the door. Any regular monitoring would be impossible.”

Cate nodded. “And we haven’t been able to confirm that she embarked on the same path as Fuzzy. All we’ve got are suspicions. Right now, she’s missing. We need to sit down with her family and get more information. And we need to find other prisoners who contracted with Martimus.

Otherwise, we’ve got nothing.”

An Interview with Seelie Kay...

Q. Why do you write romance?

Because I am fascinated by the games people play to find and secure a lasting relationship, which is not always love. There’s the chase, the courtship, the falling, the surrender. That’s what I try to capture in my stories.

Q. Do you prefer a certain type of romantic hero?

I adore smart, dashing gentlemen who aren’t afraid to live on the edge. They can be a bad boy, a billionaire, a prince, or a secret agent. That hint of danger just hooks me! However, I they have to be paired with strong, independent women who aren’t afraid to fight for what they want, even love.

Q. Why did you write “Martimus?”

This is the final book in the series, so I needed a way to tie up a lot of loose ends. That meant the Feisty Lawyers needed a compelling story to accomplish that. Something in space was beyond the realm of believability, but something at the bottom of the ocean? The possibilities were endless. I went in all sorts of directions at first, but ultimately made Martimus a key step in a much broader journey. The bottom of the ocean is an unforgiving environment. Survival is never guaranteed. Divert a few socialites there to serve out a prison sentence, make then disappear, and you’ve got what I hope is an exciting story!

As a former lawyer, I also developed an interest in private prisons. These are institutions that are governed by a different set of rules and not all institutions follow the same rules. In some cases, the private prison an inmate winds up in can mean the difference between survival and death. In addition, there have been several cases of prosecutors and judges who received a financial incentive to divert inmates to private prison. Some were so incentivized that people innocent of the crimes with which they where charged have been convicted just so the prosecutor or judge could get their kickback. It is an industry that requires serious regulation and monitoring.

Q. How does your former profession as a lawyer impact your writing?

My friends say I am obsessed with justice and I guess that’s true. After 30 years, the law and the legal world are so firmly embedded in my brain that I can’t flush them out. That has become the lens through which I view the world and that naturally guides my characters and plots. Injustice infuriates me, but it also leads me to great stories!

At the end of the battle they can only hope that what is left of their world will be worth living in.

Silver Dagger Book Tours presents... THE CHALICE AND THE CROWN by Kassandra Flamouri - EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!

The Chalice and the Crown
by Kassandra Flamouri
Genre: YA Fantasy

Driven, talented, and determined to live up to her family's fame, Sasha Nikolayeva is ballet’s crown princess. But just when Sasha lands her most prestigious role yet, she falls prey to a host of disturbing neurological symptoms that threaten to end her career and her very life. As her mind and body deteriorate, Sasha spirals into a nightmare world where beauty and cruelty exist in the same breath and villains rule from the shadows.

In the glittering, sharp-edged City of Roses, Sasha is no princess. She’s a thrall, a slave. Thousands like her suffer in cursed silence while citizens enjoy the splendor of the City, blissfully unaware that their servants are anything more than living dolls enchanted to do their bidding. But the City's slavers know the truth, and they are always watching. One misstep could cost Sasha her life—or her soul.

Even as she endures the violence and indignity of captivity, Sasha can't help being drawn to the beauty of her nightmare world and the underground rebels who offer her friendship, shelter, even love. Before Sasha can break her chains for good, she'll need choose between the life waiting for her at home and the countless lives she could save if she stays. To choose a nightmare over her real life, her future, would be madness...but maybe a little madness is just what it takes to change the fate of a city built on lies.

Dreams and reality perform a captivating pas de deux in this tale of legacy and longing. A lyrical and original fantasy that, like its heroine, has the soul of a dancer.

- Adi Rule, author of STRANGE SWEET SONG

There’s food. They throw a few crusts of stale bread into the cage and laugh as we fight over them. A dirty, stubbled knee smashes into my face as I reach into the melee with one hand and shove aside a frail old woman with the other. My hand closes spasmodically around a scrap of bread but, as I bring the prize to my lips, another girl tries to snatch it from me.

I jerk away and bite her grasping fingers, lips pulled back from my teeth. She glares at me and rubs her hand, like I’ve done something rude, like she has every right to my food. I glare back and chew as slowly as possible, both to make it last and to rub it in the thief’s face. I hope they sell her soon. She’s been a steadily growing pain in my ass for weeks now.

I’m not sure what it is that annoys me so much, there’s just something about her. Every time I see her stupid, pouting face, I want to slap it. I try to remind myself that I don’t know her, she’s probably a nice person—and anyway, why shouldn’t she pout? We gave up hope of escape long ago. Most of us don’t even bother looking beyond the bars of our cage. We’re broken, hopeless, wretched scraps of flesh and bone. If ever there was a situation to warrant a good pout, this is it.

It’s no use—I hate her. I hate every inch of her, from her stupid blond head to her once no doubt perfectly pedicured toes.

She used to be pretty. But now her long golden hair is no longer gold so much as a dull sand color, almost brown, and it hangs in greasy tangles around her face.

Not that I can point fingers. My hair looks—and smells—like something you might find smeared on the bottom of your shoe. Several weeks’ worth of grime has crusted on my body and raised angry, putrid rashes in the creases of my elbows, armpits, everywhere skin touches skin.

But at least I’m alive. A few days ago there was rain, and the next morning one of the girls began to cough and shiver. Last night the guards pulled her corpse from the cage and left it by the roadside. Our only response was to take advantage of the extra leg room.

The giddy surge of relief lasted no more than a day. New aches and pains arrived to take the place of old cramps, and now we shove and twist against each other just as violently as before. Another inch or two and I could unbend my knees. Another foot and I could lean against the bars.

We need more space. I consider the pouter, eyeing her emaciated form, and smile as thunder rumbles in the distance.

In retrospect, I probably should have realized a lot earlier that I was meant to be a writer. Even as early as kindergarten, I struggled to pay attention in class because the outside world was just not as interesting as what was going on in my head. By that time, I had already made my storytelling debut ("Squirm the Worm," delivered at age three) and had spent countless hours playing make-believe with my 284 stuffed animals, every one of whom had a name and detailed backstory.

Though I quickly learned to pay attention (or at least look like I was paying attention) during school hours, I retained a tendency to daydream and a love of stories. When I left high school to attend the Sunderman Conservatory at Gettysburg College, I learned to translate both emotional and programatic content into music. Now, as an exam prep and college essay tutor, I have the time and flexibility to really dig into fiction again. My work has appeared online and in print in such venues as Timeless Tales Magazine and Quantum Fairy Tales.

RRR presents... TIME OUT by Emma Murray - REVIEW!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're once again joined by Rachel's Random Resources for a Contemporary Women's Fiction title that will have you in stitches.  Seriously!  Even if you don't own the title of MOM in any aspect of the word, YOU WILL LAUGH...on the other hand if you DO own that moniker, you may not only laugh, but cry, cringe, and admit that you too have been there, imagined doing that.  Ready or not ladies, today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice is on deck...

Time Out
by
Emma Murray

About the book...
‘It’s just a phase,’ they said. ‘These are the happiest years of your life,’ they said…
Mother of one and professional writer Saoirse (pronounced Seersha, not Searcy – thanks a bunch Game of Thrones!) is still adjusting to the demands of motherhood, four years after the birth of her daughter, Anna.

Living in the claustrophobic London suburb of Woodvale, and being surrounded by passive-aggressive mum-wars, isn’t helping. Neither is her increasingly pent-up anger at her once-perfect husband. Her only comrade in arms, best friend Bea, is the one thing keeping her sane.

When Saoirse’s agent asks her to pitch for a book, she is horrified to discover the topic is motherhood. How can she possibly write a ‘warts and all’ account of being a mother without giving away what it’s really like?

Laugh-out-loud funny, painfully well-observed, but with an unmistakable warmth and unforgettable characters, this is the perfect antidote to all those parenting bibles that bear absolutely no relation to real life. The novel may or may not have been inspired by real life…

Perception versus Reality! - VAntage Point

Okay, so first things first, I'm not a mom in the traditional sense (I'm a "fur mom"!), but that doesn't mean this book didn't hit me just as hard!  I mean really, as a child...time out's were viewed as things to be avoided, the result of causing too much trouble, the activity-less sentence those too young for bigger punishments were assigned while I diligently sat quietly wherever I was told too.  Yep, I didn't really get time out's...though there was this ONE TIME, but that's a story for another post.  Anywho...TIME OUT in the sense of this title isn't so much referring to that sort of activity, but rather someone actually taking time out from their everyday rat race to find themselves, reclaim the life they have lost, tackle that NEW THING that's come their way, and realize that sometimes life DOES suck, but in the end, it's really what we choose to make of the choices we're given that can change that tide.

Honestly?  Sometimes I would kill (not really!  Just figuratively!) for an actual TIME OUT.  I mean, life gets scary busy with all the work obligations, family obligations, every-other-thing-that-pops-up-and-we-feel-compelled-to-say-yes-to obligations.  It would be ABSOLUTELY LOVELY to have a Cube to hole up in (it's a gorgeous house on a cliff made mostly of glass and surrounded by stunning vistas, small towns, and good hearted people)...not to mention the FABULOUS support system our gal Saoirse has, even if she doesn't quite feel it at the start.  Watching her struggles, listening to her inner monologue DYING to come out, seeing the constraints she put on herself loosen and her hair really come down was truly inspiring, uplifting, and a downright riot!  Between the "adult words" aplenty (suppose to be good for the soul), the attraction that never should have been (really?  He HAD to look like HIM?!), the Organics (let's just say it's sort of the mom version of Mean Girls), the riotous friends (especially Bea!  OMG!  She's a breath of fresh air!), and the book that may or may not end of being pitched as in thrown versus tried for, this story has so much going for it and then some!

So go ahead...cast aside your perfectly conveyed version of yourself for just a  second and get down and dirty with a cast of characters that will accept you just the same!

RRR presents... A GOOD DEMON IS HARD TO FIND by Kate Moseman - REVIEW!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers!

Today, we're back again with another Rachel's Random Resources tour featuring a romcom you won't want to miss.  Seriously, they'll be the devil to pay...or at least an Earl of you-know-where to avoid, if you're a fan of the genre and pass this up, so put on your listening ears...err, um, I mean, your reading eyes (glasses?) and get ready to discover your next must read afternoon escape with today's ebook of choice...

A Good Demon is Hard to Find
by
Kate Moseman

About the book...
Sometimes, a date from hell is just what you need...

When Erin thoughtlessly lays a curse on Mark, her cheating ex-husband, she doesn’t expect a well-dressed Great Earl of Hell to show up in her kitchen to fulfill the curse (and make damn good coffee while he’s at it).

Andromalius specializes in wickedness and revenge. He’s ready, willing, and able to rain down hell on Erin’s ex—but when Mark announces a hasty new marriage, Erin needs more than just revenge.
She needs a date to the wedding.

Fans of Good Omens, Lucifer, and The Good Place will love this wickedly funny paranormal romantic comedy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Old School Color Comic Bird Angel Demon Heart Wings Tattoo Designs ...
Erin is a woman scorned...but she's also about to realize the true power of words!
Never in a person's life has "say what you mean" or "be careful what you wish for" been more perfectly applied.  Erin was merely venting her totally appropriate frustration with/at her ex-husband and POOF; she now has herself a demon at her beck and call.  Say what?  Exactly.  Andy (for short) is not exactly what you think of when you say DEMON...I mean, he can be, but not in everyday life.  He's actually on the eye candy side of things WITH fashion sense and yes ladies, he's available!  *wink wink*  Only thing is, he's here to exact the revenge Erin desired when she uttered her unplanned but oh-so-perfectly-timed curse.  Yep...and some of the ideas he has are gonna have you holding your sides in laughter...but it's all good, and part and parcel to the humor aspect of the story, as Andy and his antics (or lack thereof) and a fabulous cast of characters (pay attention to Phoenix, the librarian, and...yeah, those two plus the main are about it actually) help Erin realize that the best revenge really is living your best life...
I actually finished this one several days before I attempted to write my review.  There wasn't anything wrong with it and, quite frankly, I rather enjoyed the story, but I was having a hard time hanging on to the ending.  Upon reading a few other takes on the tale, I see SO MUCH LOVE for the book (which I totally share!), but I also see some that raise a few issues I too noticed.  Plot holes are definitely a thing, as are issues and/or characters introduced that aren't going to be explored; I'd be lying if I said they didn't exist.  HOWEVER, if you take it at face value, laugh when you feel like laughing (like the church pantsing scene, or Andy's million-and-one lists of things to do to a certain ex, or heck, even the librarian that's definitely more), gasp when you feel like gasping (Erin's dream world really was a nightmare!), dig into the angst as well as the passion, you'll find yourself loving it for all its devilish charm!
