Walden Pond Press presents... DIVE by John David Anderson - REVIEW!

Hello there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today's featured title comes to us via Walden Pond Press and just celebrated its BOOK BIRTHDAY this past week 🥳, so you know it's out there in the great big blue...um, bookstore... just waiting to be discovered. By whom? Well, a reader like you.

Someone who enjoys a good story, who doesn't shy away from heavy ideas, who revels in all the feels a tale can present, and walks away changed in some fashion by the impact of what they've read. Or maybe even someone going through just what these characters are in some way, and that sounding board, that visual reference can help them see the light through the intensity. Whatever your reason may be, I've read this author's works in the past, and haven't been led astray yet, so when I heard about this one, I knew I had to find out more. Ladies and gents, readers of Middle-grade fiction and perhaps beyond, let's take a closer look at what I've found between the pages of today's book of choice...

About the book...
From John David Anderson, the beloved author of Posted comes a powerful, poignant, and unexpected upper middle grade novel about the rules in life that box us in and the determination to break out. From the moment Kassandra Connor leaps from the diving board to the moment she hits the water, everything feels in control.

The rest of her life does not. St. Lawrence Academy is supposed to have everything Kass’s old school didn’t: safe hallways, small classes, and most important, a chance to dive. But since transferring, all Kass can think about is what’s missing. Like her best friend, Aleah, who’s starting to pull away. Or the comfortable life so many of her classmates enjoy while Kass’s family’s restaurant struggles to stay afloat. Even the excitement she always felt in the pool, now that she’s on the same team as Amber Moore—the best diver in the state, who’s barely said two words to her all year.

Kass feels like she’s drowning, until she meets a boy named Miles. He’s a diver, too—someone who searches through dumpsters in the posh side of town for things he can salvage or sell. Miles knows what it’s like to be boxed in by things you can’t control, and as Kass spends more and more time with him, she starts to wonder what would happen if she tried to break out of her own box—and what she might lose by doing so.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's the thing about this author's books...there's always something you can connect with. They deal with human emotions, situations that can happen in real life, and have characters that every reader can find themselves in. Take this story...
There are people that live like Miles, whether by choice or by necessity. They are no different than you or I, and to think otherwise does everyone a disservice. One isn't smarter, richer, or more benevolent, because they have everything they want, and never want for anything. One isn't uneducated, poor, or unkind, because they struggle daily or live a different lifestyle. Taking the time to get to know one another allows us the means to find the common ground on which to build. Understanding where the other is coming from, and what their needs might be, helps in making sure they can be met. Not everyone wants someone to fix their situation... sometimes just being acknowledged, being seen is enough. I'm afraid I got off on a tangent here... let me zone back in a little.
Kass and Miles may seemingly live different lives, but that doesn't mean they're that far apart. He shows her how to notice things, and opens her eyes to the world around her that she didn't know she was missing. She shows him that anyone can feel boxed in within their own lives, and the ability to break out is entirely within ourselves. I loved seeing this friendship blossom, the usually unseen or ignored made known, and each of them reach for a better tomorrow, one moment at a time. There's not a quick fix that sticks for anything, but those goals and dreams worth the effort are something to put the work in for.
A great read for Middle-grade Fiction fans of all ages, a great addition to the author's body of works, and a perfectly timed release for the kiddos heading back to school. We need more times when the line between classes is blurred, where the facade is seen through and the truth is left to shine. Maybe one day, we can all be our true authentic selves without shame or repercussions... but the only way to get there is one person at a time.
Walden Pond Press presents... KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET by John David Anderson!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we welcome Walden Pond Press as we dig into the latest release from author John David Anderson, currently making its way through the blogosphere.  It's a story perfect for Middle Grade fans and beyond that reminds us of the complexities that exist in all our relationships, and yet the ease at which we can be comfortable once again. Ladies and gents, I give you today's ebook of choice...
About the book...
From the first moment Morgan can remember, Claire has always been there. Big sister and little brother. Cat and Mouse. They’ve always understood each other, saved each other, seen each other. And they stuck to their own personal code, unwritten but understood, that siblings were inseparable, that they had each other’s backs, no matter what.
At least, they used to.
Somewhere along the line, things between them shifted. Claire started fighting more with Mom, storming out of the house, spending more and more time away, and Morgan felt his sister and best friend slipping away. Now he spends nearly every night sitting awake in his room, waiting for the sound of her key in the lock.
It’s a sound he hasn’t heard in nearly a week, ever since her and Mom’s worst fight ever. So when Claire finally calls and tells Morgan she wants to spend the day together, just the two of them, he knows this might be his only chance—not just to convince her to come home, but to remind her how good things used to be, and could be again.
But Claire has her own plan for the day. One that will mean that, no matter what happens, things between them are going to change forever.
~~~~~~~~~~~

This is a story about growing up, the complexities of the relationships we keep, and how change is inevitable. It lays bare the many layers that exist in our family connections... parents to children, sibling to sibling, etcetera... and how those bonds run so deep that even when the worst case scenario is staring us in the face, we can't hope but hope for a different outcome.

Morgan was a kind soul just trying to keep his family from imploding despite it being anything but his job. Claire, his sister, is definitely pressing her boundaries of late, and today is no exception. She cares for her brother, yet the draw of the great big somewhere out there is calling to her, much louder than his voice or that of her mother. Everything is just too much and yet when it seems she might be trying to make amends, he is only too willing to assist.  Will he get his heart broken? Not on purpose, but sometimes it happens, like fate, and all we can do is try to cushion the blow, make it easier to accept, if not understand.

A great pick for kiddo readers trying to make sense of life as they get older and the sometimes volatile times that can occur as we try to find our way. Things may get murky, but it's worth the struggle to find our voice, and it's a good reminder that while things change, some things, like the feelings deep down, never do.

Walden Pond Press presents... THE GREATEST KID IN THE WORLD by John David Anderson - REVIEW!

Hello there!
Here's hoping the week is treating you right.

Today, we're shining the REVIEW spotlight on a title currently touring with Walden Pond Press as we celebrate its recent BOOK BIRTHDAY!  Exciting, right?!  I certainly think so, I have to admit, I'm pretty sure you'll agree.  It's penned by author John David Anderson, whose work I've featured right here on my site, and the book's are always memorable with a lesson to be gleaned, while still being relatable to its target audience (and beyond!) and entertaining to boot!  Ready to discover your next must read?  Ladies and gents, gather around as we explore between the pages of...

About the book...

From the beloved author of Posted comes the story of Zeke Stahls—a thoroughly average twelve-year-old who somehow finds himself in a competition to be named the World's Greatest Kid.

Zeke Stahls is not the best kid in the world. Some days he struggles just to be good. He'd rather be pulling pranks than doing extra credit, and he's too busy performing experiments on his little brother, Nate, or tormenting his older sister, Jackie, to volunteer for charity.

Which is why Zeke and his entire family are shocked when they receive word that he has been selected as a contestant in an online competition to find the World's Greatest Kid.

Zeke has no idea how he was chosen for this, and he knows that measuring up to the other nominees--a saintly lineup of selfless, charming and talented do-gooders with photogenic smiles and hearts of gold--is hopeless. Still, with a $10,000 cash prize on the line, and Zeke's mom struggling to hold the family together on her single-parent salary, he decides to give it his best shot.

As Zeke concocts various plots to show the world just how “great” he is, however, he finds himself wondering what that word even means, and who gets to decide. And what kind of kid he wants--and needs--to be.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was as flabbergasted as Zeke in regards to him getting the nod as a contestant for being the GREATEST KID IN THE WORLD.  No, I'm not being mean spirited, but the story sets you up with a reality check.  Zeke isn't what one would consider a model for the role, and yet...and yet...all the sides we get to see of him, all the colors that make him who he is, all the moments that he gets to shine even when he isn't intending to...they all go into changing your mind rather rapidly about our little man. How much love he has for his family is phenomenal.  The way he interacts with his kid brother is astounding.  He could work on the communication with his big sister...but that relationship with cracks gets stronger as the competition heats up.  When he shares the moment on the porch step with the cameraman (who, by the way, is way more than a side character!), my heart couldn't help but smile.  When he sets up his final act for day four to impress everyone and guarantee himself the final votes, I couldn't help tearing up, it was that heartfelt of a moment. When all is said and done, the final vote comes in, and... *cue the dramatic music*
Despite the title, it's not a story about LITERALLY being the GREATEST in the world...more like the greatest in your corner of the world.  It doesn't preach to readers about doing better, going bigger, or being completely selfless, but it DOES remind us just how much the little things, or at least the things we view as little, count...how far that ripple effect reaches, and the amount of good we can do, if only we put our hearts in it.  It also gives us a great dose of reality in regards to our social media presence, and that not everything is always as it seems.  That person with the perfect life...might have just spent an hour or more making that image or reel LOOK perfect...but the imperfections of life connect us just as much, if not more than, that which seems flawless.
A great read for kiddos just starting that transition to young teen, as well as readers beyond the target audience.  It never hurts to be reminded that we're all human, part of the same "race", facing different struggles, and enjoying various triumphs.  It's important to celebrate life as a whole, and take those moments, both good and bad, for what they are...learning experiences, and memories...because each of you out there reading this is the GREATEST to someone.  It's a matter of putting ourselves out there and figuring out who that someone is.
Walden Pond Press presents... HOMEBOUND by John David Anderson - REVIEW!
Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're heading back into deep space with Walden Pond Press as we celebrate the release of author John David Anderson's latest Children's Fiction release.  It's the completion of his duology that began with Stowaway, a title featured here on my site that I REALLY enjoyed, so when I caught wind of its approach...I simply had to join the fun.  Now, it's been just about a year since the first book's release, so you may need a mini-refresher to stir the old memory, a request I am more than happy to oblige....
About the book...
The beloved author of Posted and Ms. Bixby's Last Day returns with the first book in a coming-of-age sci-fi duology about Leo, a kid trying to navigate the galaxy in order to save his family—and, possibly, the planet Earth.
When scientists discover a rare and mysterious mineral buried in the Earth’s crust, they have no idea that it just happens to be the most valuable substance in the entire universe. It’s not long before aliens show up to our little corner of the galaxy offering a promise of protection, some fabulous new technology, and entry into their intergalactic coalition—all in exchange for this precious resource. A material so precious that other alien forces are willing to start a war over it. A war that soon makes its way to Earth.
Leo knows this all too well. His mother was killed in one such attack, and soon after, his father, a Coalition scientist, decides it would be best for them to leave Earth behind. It’s on this expedition that their ship is attacked, Leo’s father is kidnapped, and Leo and his brother are stranded in the middle of space. The only chance they have is for Leo to stow away on a strange ship of mercenary space pirates bound for who knows where and beg the captain to help him find his father.
But the road is dangerous, and pirates, of course, only look out for themselves. Leo must decide who to trust as he tries to stay alive and save his family, even as he comes to understand that there aren’t many people—human or alien—that he can count on in this brave new universe.
About the book...
Leo Fender is no stranger to catastrophe, whether it’s the intergalactic war that took his mother’s life or the ongoing fight for his own. He’s seen his planet plundered, his ship attacked, his father kidnapped, and his brother go missing—and found himself stranded on a ship with a bunch of mercenary space pirates. Still, nothing could have prepared him for the moment he and the crew tried to save his father—and discovered a dark plot that could destroy hundreds of worlds in the blink of an eye.
Now, Leo is adrift. His father has sent him on a mission with nothing but a data chip and a name of someone who could help, and Captain Bastian Black and the crew of the Icarus are determined to see this through to the end with Leo, to fulfill his father’s wish and prevent further conflict. But as Leo searches for answers, he can’t help but wonder what it would take to end the war, to track down his father and brother and return to whatever home they have left—and if the cost of doing so is one he would be able to pay.
John David Anderson returns with the conclusion to the epic coming-of-age adventure that began in Stowaway—a riveting and heartfelt search for hope and home, family and future, in a galaxy ravaged by war.
🪐     🚀     🌑     🚀     🪐
Leo and the Icarus crew are back in this second space adventure filled with dangers unknown and a future as murky as a black hole.
Our little leading man and his current company, the pirate crew of the Icarus, as mentioned, have been tasked with transporting a chip with infinitesimally important information that could help end or win the war.  Is there a difference?  You bet, and it's all in the body count, whether they be actual beings or celestial bodies.  He's to deliver it to someone his father trusted implicitly, though once introductions are made, it's hard to imagine why.  Their lives are in peril on more than one occasion, and the weapons (and patience!) of both ship and crew are tested more times than worth mentioning.  Let's just say it's not a friendly time to be out of the stratosphere wandering among the stars.  Will they carry the plan out to completion?  What does the chip actually hold?  Will Leo ever see his father or brother again?  Will Captain Black ever change his musical selections for pre-attack mode?  These questions and more are answered within the pages of this stunning conclusion...and who am I to spoil all the surprises!
I will say this...as much as I loved the first book, I was anxious about the second.  Sequels or follow-ups have a tendency to talk the talk, but not walk the walk.  This one moonwalks with the best of them, and not only catches us up with the ragtag motley crew we've grown to love, but builds our relationship with them further, establishing roots where none should have been possible.  It certainly speaks to the idea of family being those we choose to include in our inner circle, and home not being a building, but a feeling when we are surrounded by those we love and care for (a hard lesson for our young friend, Leo).  The issues covered in the story may be presented as Science Fiction, but they are grounded in realities.  Taking from people or a place just because we can.  Destroying civilizations or lands simply because we are better equipped.  Acting like Mother Earth is a completely renewable resource with no end, without understanding that it can be made finite by the choices we make, the impact we have.
Come aboard the Icarus for one last ride...and discover worlds, and people beyond your imagination...
Guys.  GUYS.  Guys! GUYS!
This story?  The one we're diving into right now?
Well, it may sound cliché, but it was OUT OF THIS WORLD!  Whether you're a die hard science fiction fan or simply a dabbler that loves a good story no matter where it takes place, this one is for you!
Leo is our little leading man, despite not knowing that it the direction his story is heading.  Once upon an EARTH, he had an ideal life.  Mom and Dad at hand, a loving yet annoying older brother close by, a house, a cat, neighbors, trees, and beaches along which to collect seashells.  It may not sound like much, but it was paradise...until one day that paradise came to be noticed by others not of this world.  It seemed like a peaceful match, sharing knowledge, technology, RESOURCES, and things went well, until they didn't and they landed smack dab in the middle of a galactic war.  They joined the good fight, making choices that were suppose to hold their shrinking family together, and managed to do so for a while.  They built a life they never asked for in a place they never imagined, but heartache came knocking once again, and this time it was out for annihilation.  Some quick thinking on a big brother's part managed to secure someone a chance to make it through, but the obstacles ahead, Leo's inability to leave them behind, and that overwhelming desire to see his family once again, may put them all in harm's way.  Good thing quick thinking runs in the family.  Good thing leading with one's heart is a virtue not a hardship.  Good thing there are still those in the universe that we can call friend...even if they may be the most unlikely of candidates.
Guys, guys, GUYS, GuYs, GUYS!  The adventure that awaits at every turn of the page will leave you feeling like you've just gazed at the most amazing starfield and can't look back down.  I loved how we got caught up on the past while still driving forward in the present.  I loved the varied cast of characters and how you could never really pin them down in the best way possible!  I loved the unexpected moments of laughter, violence promised (but not overtly so!), and awkward moments defused in ridiculous ways!  Boo's kiss...Skits rescue...Leo's inhaler...all moments among the moments I won't soon forget and YOU should watch for!  And yes, it ends with loose ends because it IS a duology, but not so many that you don't get a clear picture of where we've landed after all is said and done.  I know I'll be eagerly awaiting the second release much as Boo awaits his hot cup of gyurt!
About the book...
Everyone who wishes upon a star, or a candle, or a penny thrown into a fountain knows that you’re not allowed to tell anyone what you’ve wished for.  But even so, rest assured: There is someone out there who hears it.
Ophelia Delphinium Fidgets is no ordinary fairy – she is a Granter: one of the select few whose job it is to venture beyond the boundaries of the Haven and grant the wishes of unsuspecting humans every day.  It’s the work of the Granters that generate the magic that allows the fairies to do what they do and to keep the Haven hidden and safe.  But with worldwide magic levels at an all-time low, this is not as easy as it sounds.  On a typical day, only a small fraction of the millions of potential wishes get granted.  And even granting those promised few means navigating a human world fraught with danger.
Today, however, is anything but typical.  Because today, Ophelia is going out on her first assignment.  And she’s about to discover that getting what you truly want takes much more than a handful of fairy dust.
