SUMMER READING: For those who love a good series...

Well hello there, everyone!

Welcome back to another sunshiny day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place that’s aiming to cure the humdrum from your summer reading lists with a few additions of our own.  Like today’s title…

It’s book two in a series perfect for those with a passion for horses or even a fleeting interest because the story packs a lot of heart…and some devious underhandedness, which we’ll get to in a moment.  You may remember my feature on book 1 (Keeping Secrets) just last week (and if not, feel free to pretend you do and then click on over to read all about it), and as the author was set to celebrate a bookish birthday today (although it appears it happened a few days earlier than anticipated, oh well…party time anyway!), it seemed the perfect time to introduce you to the next installment.  Without further ado, today’s book of choice is…

Kate is back, much to chagrin of Angela (nay ne nay ne boo boo!), and with best friend Holly by her side, things couldn’t be brighter.  I mean, when we last left her she had won the hearts of the dressage competition, even if she did give up the gold for the spoiled princess (*glares at spoiled princess character*), caught the attention of a fellow male rider (ooooh!), and patched things up with her bestest pal…add to that the renewed joy of riding and she’s walking on sunshine; best watch out for the breaks in those sunbeams!

Change is a constant in life and in books and at Timber Ridge, change has arrived in the form of Denise, Angela’s other half (though not necessarily better…), leaving.  Party over here, party over there, party…oh, sorry.  ^_^  Ahem.  Yes, Denise is leaving, sad to say (*cough* not *cough*) but don’t worry my friends, the saddle won’t have long enough to cool because a new rider has come to town with breeding and family that reaches right over to the other side of the pond and beyond; her name is Jennifer West.  Now, Angela will have you thinking she’s all prim and proper (in this case, snooty and just like her), but I’m not so certain.  One moment she’s all punked out (look wise at least) and the next she’s sporting your average run of the mill girl next door ensemble.  When push comes to shove, she may be present at the “scene of the crime” but she doesn’t really seem to have her heart fully in it…perhaps there’s some hope for her yet.  Anywho….

This time around, there’s another new character that’s falls outside the human category by the name of Buccaneer.  He’s a strong, powerful, willful horse, much too wild to be a resident of these stables and yet despite Liz’s protests (that’s Holly’s Mom in case you needed a refresher…she’s the head trainer at Timber Ridge), he arrives all the same.  Good thing Liz is an expert trainer because he needs a firm yet loving hand to help him reach his full potential WITHOUT bringing the house down…literally.  Another good thing?  Kate’s presence.  Why?  Let’s just say that there’s a lot of healing that needs to be done and sometimes having a kindred spirit on that journey can be best for both parties involved.  I really liked Buccaneer and think he’s a great match for Kate.  He added that little extra something to the equine side of the story and his penchant for peppermints was too funny. Now, let’s check in with Holly…

The final scene of book 1 had us holding our breath as it looked like there was a good chance that Holly might finally be on the road to recovery.  Great news, right?  Not so fast.  While her fondest desire is to be able to ride Magician (her horse) again one day, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be any time soon.  That one step forward, well, it didn’t put her two steps back exactly, but it almost appears to have been a fluke since nothing has happened since then to move her forward…that is until things turn dire as in life or death.  That’s right.  You didn’t think this would merely be about another horse competition or steer clear of danger now, did you?  Good for a second there I was worried!  Holly is thrown right in the mix and without Kate by her side (yes…another catastrophe we encounter…thanks to SOMEONE who shall remain nameless…*glares at character*), it’s all up to her.  Will she find the strength within to save the day AND herself?  You’ll have to read it to find out….(hehe)

In summary, a great addition to the Timber Ridge Riders series and an adventure you won’t soon forget.  The value of true friends is visited once again as is the importance of patience, kindness, and understanding.  Readers will be reminded to take other people’s (and animal’s) feelings into account as well as the fact that while “number one” may be important, the musketeers REALLY got it right…ALL for one and one for ALL.

About the Author

Maggie Dana’s first riding lesson, at the age of five, was less than wonderful. In fact, she hated it so much, she didn’t try again for another three years. But all it took was the right instructor and the right horse and she was hooked for life.

Her new riding stable was slap bang in the middle of Pinewood Studios, home of England’s movie industry. So while learning to groom horses, clean tack, and muck stalls, Maggie also got to see the stars in action. Some even spoke to her.

Born and raised near London, Maggie now makes her home on the Connecticut shoreline where she divides her time between hanging out with the family's horses and writing her next book in the Timber Ridge Riders series.

In addition to writing horse books for kids, Maggie also writes women's fiction. Her first novel, Beachcombing, was published by Macmillan in 2009.

Yesterday, we ventured into Middle Grade Fiction with the first book in a horse centered series that really made an impression.  Today, we’re jumping ahead to a Fiction title that could just as easily be placed in the Young Adult category with nary a change.  Get ready readers because this is another one for your summer reading list that you won’t be able to say no to.  Today’s book of choice is….

In the Bag is a smart and stylish story that explores the old-fashioned art of romance in a modern world, where falling in love can be as risky as checking a bag on an international flight. Buckle your seat belt—it's going to be a bumpy vacation!

First things first, if you have heard of the sisters Klise….that would be Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise….you need to correct that folly STAT!  This amazing duo is responsible for the creation of MANY wonderful children’s books that are not only great reads for all ages, but perfect celebrations of the written word.  Of course!  …you say… they’re books!  The word has to be written!  Ah, but not so…or rather not exactly.  Allow me to explain…

In today’s world, the art of letter writing or hand written passages tends to be falling by the wayside.  Think about it.  When was the LAST time you wrote a letter?  I mean with your hands, a pen/pencil and paper.  Can you even remember?  What about a note-to-self…jotted one of those down recently?  Or perhaps you grabbed your smartphone or tablet PC to type it up instead.  Yep…GUILTY as charged (both you and me)!  Now, I try to write out my reviews prior to posting them…something about a pen and paper that makes the work seem more weighty…but even that gets dropped from time to time….depending on my available time.  The books in their repertoire, the stories they contain, are for the most part completely told through correspondence whether it be letters, lamppost flyers, menus, newspapers clippings or what have you.  The entire thing!  It’s fun, it’s amazing, it’s something that really gets you thinking about all the times that you could have responded the old fashioned way without missing a deadline, and how much more that received response meant to the recipient. In short, you should really check them out….but I digress, back on today’s title….

This is Kate Klise’s first endeavor into the world of adult fiction…which due to the story itself, could easily be housed in the land of Young Adult without feeling like a wolf among sheep.  In this story, we have a case of mistaken identity…of a case…a written note that was met with a heart full of skepticism despite its true intentions…and the mission of one bag to change the fate of four people for better or worse.  Okay, so it’s the actions of those that found and lost said bag that get things rolling, but fate seems to have a big hand in it all as well.  It’s hilarious, it’s touching, it’s sweet, it’s not to be missed….which of course you’ve heard all before, but trust me, it applies.

Fans of her children’s fiction will not be disappointed as her popular style of storytelling is not completely erased despite the older audience aimed for.  That’s right.  The appearance of correspondence throughout the book from the handwritten note to the emails that fly back and forth between Coco and Webb work wonders to put you right there in the story while giving it that air of familiarity that can’t be denied.  Another deja vue moment?  The included illustrations when day turns to night.  The images depicted give readers a glimpse of what’s forthcoming in the next few chapters, but only enough to peek your interest while not spoiling the fun.  I know, I know…pictures in an ADULT fiction book, and yet…it works REALLY well.  Now on to the characters…

Daisy and Andrew are the slightly jaded adults just trying to make their way through another trip abroad.  Daisy is there for pleasure with her daughter Coco; Andrew is there for work with his son Webb.  All work and no play makes for one stressed out papa, but the same can be said about all play when a work opportunity that will also help out a friend is staring you in the face. Let’s just say they’d be a match made in heaven if their paths would only cross…and cross they do but they end up more crossed than anything else.  It’s rather funny and a great example of how one should not assume what another means nor intentions are….just ask them to speak their mind already!  SO much confusion could be afforded.  Now on to the “children”…

Children is not an appropriate term…nor would they like that I even used it for a moment as they are teenagers.  Coco is just graduating high school with college right around the corner, a good girl (too good at times according to Mom) and smart as a whip….Webb is right along the same paths as well, though his Dad wishes he would become technology challenged for a while at least and enjoy the European landscape.  Their chance email encounter due to the bag switcheroo is entertaining to say the least…especially when they are trying to sort out if they each are who they say they are (though I cringed at Webb’s proof that he wasn’t an old creep or globe-trotting international playboy around page 52…really, never written a real letter…NEVER?).  Never has a case of “mistaken identity” been captured so fully and full of life as this….well, that I’ve seen so far at least. 

Plans are made, dates are set and gasp!  They agree to meet, swap bags, and maybe numbers if all goes well….*wink*wink*…what could go wrong?  Ha!  If you really asked that, than perhaps you thought we were reading a fantasy fiction work, whereas this one is more contemporary thereby giving it free reign to have things go wrong that can go wrong. It mostly boils down to a lack of communication…which again is pretty ironic since that’s what they were doing this whole time…and bottled up feelings, but it translates to a story you won’t be able to put down.  The pages fly by and before you know it, you’ve reached the end….and although its not the one you thought you were speeding towards, it’s perfect just the same.

In summary, a great summer reading pick for young adult readers and beyond!  If you enjoy a fast flowing story of mishaps, chance encounters, potential connections missed and gained, as well as time spent in a foreign land, this one is most certainly for you.  There are moments that are smile inducing, moments of frustration, kindness shown and forgiveness given…but mostly there are the moments we stumble and share through a life well lived that lead us down those often unexpected but truly worthwhile paths that memories are made of.  A grand adventure you won’t be able to put down (I know I couldn’t!) with a cute cover to boot (love the outfit!), you’ll certainly want to make room for this one in YOUR bag this season.

Today, we take a step back to Middle Grade or Kids Fiction if you will with a series for young readers and the young at heart featuring a friend from the animal kingdom that many are particularly fond of….horses (hence why today's post title appears to have a typo...only not).  That’s right, horses!  I myself love these majestic creatures…though I’ve yet to have my request to own one granted from when I was four.  ^_^  Their beauty is in their strength as well as appearance creating a combination that enchants the hearts of girls (and boys) of all ages.  Before I wax to far into memories, allow me to properly introduce today’s book of choice….

Sounds harrowing, right?  Oh buddy, you don’t know the half of it yet!  It is filled with quite a few devious acts on the part of SOMEONE or other that apparently can’t grasped right from wrong…certainly doesn’t help that their Mother doesn’t know this basic lesson either.  *tisk tisk*  Very distasteful…their actions, not the book…and deadly.  *-*  Whoever said the Middle Grade reads lack the energy and edge-of-your-seat pull you get from stories written for an older audience….should really think again.  Side note…I’ve actually ridden a horse once before…okay, so it was more sat-on-whilst-a-friend-led-the-pony-a-short-distance-through-the-woods, but I WAS in the saddle and stayed there so humphf!  The experience was brief, but memorable nonetheless (as was my ride on an elephant and a camel….two less-interesting-than-they-sound stories for another time) so I can certainly see how youngsters fall in love with the idea in general, but this is one of those stories that readers can relate to no matter your interest level in equines.

Our main events center around Timber Ridge Stables, home of tranquil paths through beautiful woodlands and an award winning riding team currently lead by Ms. Chapman.  She seeks to instill a love of horses and of riding in those she coaches but the powers that be (aka the owner…whom we shall discuss in a few) are looking for a heavier hand.  They aren’t satisfied with merely placing in the competitions, they want to be number one….regardless of the riders enjoyment, lessons they learn or whomever thinks they can be a shining star (because only her daughter can be THAT person…again, we’ll discuss later).  It’s less about play and more about the prestige which as you can probably guess is a recipe for disaster.  Ms. Chapman takes it in stride even when things begin to spiral out of control and I really admire the kind heart she shows even to those you’d really like to just go all out ninja on.  (Seriously, the patience of a saint has this one!)  Now, for the rest of our featured cast…

I found myself rooting for Kate time and again as she struggled to balance her outward persona with the guilt and blame she carried within.  The cause of this heavy burden?  A death at her previous riding school for which all blame fell to her.  Was it her fault?  Mums the word on that one (gotta let you uncover that secret on your own!) but whether or not she was 100% guilty, the way the owners handled things?  SO wrong!  She’s only 14 for crying out loud, a mere child…accidents happen, people make mistakes.  Yes, the consequences were dire, but my goodness…check things out fully before attacking people and take some blame yourself for not following up on your workers ESPECIALLY when they are children!  *shakes head*  Anywho….where was I…oh yes!  Moving forward…

Holly is a spitfire whom I loved every bit as much as Kate. She’s stubborn, doesn’t let a thing stop her, and fights for what’s right even when others lack the needed backbone to do it themselves….in short, a great friend and from what I hear, a great rider!  She may be in a wheelchair now, but umm….well, just wait and see.  I think we may be up for a demonstration of her aforementioned skills in book 2.  Now for our final leading lady…Angela Dean.

Angela is a product of her upbringing, sad to be so cliché but it’s true.  Her Mother is an upstanding citizen in the community and owns the resort/ranch featured here…read into that a snooty woman who thinks she’s above EVERYONE and deserves the best of EVERYTHING regardless of whom she steps on in the process.  Guess what?  She wants that for her daughter too.  Oh…goody.  *o*  Angela is more than happy to take up the reins as she tries out for “Queen B of the Year” (not a real competition, just my way of saying how “nice” she is…or isn’t…) but underneath it all…all the tennis sweaters, lack of cooperation, ugliness in words and actions (to the extent that they could do MORE than injure!)….yes, miles below the surface, I think she might have a glimmer of hope still (okay, so you might need a magnifying glass…or a microscope). 

She prides herself on her image and the company she keeps but most of it stems from a craving for attention from the one that should be giving it unconditionally (aka Mom).  She’ll do whatever she needs to remain in the spotlight, even if it means bending the rules or much worse.  I think she had a little “ah-ha” moment at the end of this story with Kate at the competition….not enough to call it an epiphany but certainly enough to rattle her well constructed cage just a wee.  Perhaps Angela’s humane side will be unveiled in future tales?  Then again….every story needs a “villain”….hmm, it’ll be interesting to see where she goes from here; the good side or the dark side (…I hear they have cookies?  Hehe…).

In summary, a story full of heart for readers of all ages that explores the connections we have with animals as well as each other.  Horse lovers will delight in the interactions with their equine counterparts as well as the “stable talk” (something that allows those less familiar with all the terms associated to this past time a chance to learn a bit as well) while those with merely a passing fancy will find a home in the adventure of the story itself.  The ups and downs, secrets kept and revealed, plotting and planning will keep you guessing just what will happen next while the final scenes will keep you coming back for more (and there is more!  Hang, on …we’re getting there….)  We all want to be the best, but there can only be ONE “number one”.  Perhaps instead of focusing on that lack of a blue ribbon, it is better still to strive for being the best version of ourselves we can be; it’s certainly a peaceful prospect and allows a lot more light and mirth to occupy our days than hard feelings and deceit.  Something to think about…

Up ahead he could see the source of the smoke he'd spotted earlier, a car that had come off the road, punched through the barrier and down the bank to the side.  It sat in a field, surrounded by people, hundreds of them, swarming all over it the same way they had swarmed over him back at school.  They didn't seem to care about the black clouds that billowed from the engine, they were just tearing and scratching and kicking and even biting at the metal like starving rats trying to get at the meat inside a bin.

Sounds good, right?
It's got its uber creepy moments like this and then those that are more subtle and yet just as or even MORE creepy.  There's something going on in Fursville...something that won't be contained nor ignored.  The danger is real, the consequences dire...and let's not even talk about the morality of it all because we're just now uncovering a small hint of what or whom we are dealing with.  Yes...needless to say that I can't wait to see what happens in the last 200 pages (yep, almost done!).  Stay tuned for my review....
