Title: THE CHRONICLES OF VIKTOR VALENTINE

Author: Z Brewer

Pub. Date: September 3, 2024

Pages: 272

A perfectly average boy uncovers a supernatural secret about his family that could put his whole town in grave danger—if it doesn’t make him die of embarrassment first—in this mysterious and funny middle grade debut from New York Times bestselling author Z Brewer.

Viktor Valentine can’t think of a better way to end his summer vacation than playing All the Vampires Everywhere, his favorite video game, with his best friend, Damon. Yet his parents, who make cringey jokes and call him dorky nicknames, seem set on ruining his plans. Viktor knows he can’t really compete with Damon’s “cool” friends—so their epic video game playing is the best Viktor can do to come close to being cool in Damon’s eyes.

But then Viktor slowly starts to realize that his parents may be hiding something from him. They’re acting very suspicious; they sneak out after midnight and return with bloody mouths. But he’s probably just played too many video games. After all, vampires aren’t real . . . right?

Seventh grade is tough enough without having to figure out if your family has fangs. And to make matters worse, the new girl that moved in across the street seems particularly interested in things that go bump in the night. Can Viktor protect his family, or will his sleuthing come back to bite him?

######################

This was a fascinating, fun, FANGtastic read that's just waiting for you to take a bite out of it!

Viktor is great little leading man that's stepped into the middle of an unexpected mystery with secrets coming at him left and right. You're tantalized along the way by little hints dropped here and there, but you're never quite sure whether to take them at face value, or if you're being misled. The new librarian at school that he's volun-told to help get better acquainted with everyone and everything. The mysterious substitute teacher at the beginning of the school year that seems way more cool than a sub should be. The new neighbors across the street with a young girl his age that actually wants to talk to him and isn't drooling over his bestie. The bloody shirt soaking in the sink, his dad's profusely bleeding lip, his.... shall I go on? 😳 Yes, for a town called Nowhere there's an awfully lot of something going on... and that's not even taking into account the big showdown heading their way, the invited but not welcome visitor, and the eventual revelations that are coming whether everyone wants them or not.  At least by book's end, Viktor has tackled one thing that's eternally hard for boys of any age...how to talk to a girl!

It's newly released status means it'll be easier to find, but if your local bookstore or library is out of stock, KEEP LOOKING! It's definitely one you don't want to miss. Highly recommended for Middle Grade Fiction fans that love some BITE in their reading. Can't wait to see if we get to travel to Nowhere again in the future, but I'll keep my bags packed just in case.

Celebrate National Make a Friend Day with... THE PRINCESS PROTECTION PROGRAM by Alex London - REVIEW!

Today is National Make a Friend Day, and while it might be a lesser celebrated holiday, there is no denying that a good friend can make a world of difference in our lives... even if you happen to be a princess.  Ladies and gents, if you're a fan of fairytales, or fairytale redos, this is one story your don't want to miss! Allow me to introduce, today's book of choice...

By
Alex London
9780063303874
Greenwillow Books

About the book...

Every fairy tale ends with its characters living happily ever after, right? A valiant prince quests long and hard to reach the castle where the sleeping princess lies. And with a kiss, he awakens her.

But what if the princess does not think a kiss from a stranger is a very pleasant way to wake up? Yuck!

When Rosamund flees her prince, a Door of Opportunity opens, and she steps through it to the Home Educational Academy (the HEA for short). Rosamund has found the Princess Protection Program, where fugitive fairy-tale princesses escape unwanted affections, untimely ends, and all the other perils of their stories.

But the longer Rosamund lives in the real world, the more questions she has. Does anyone ever graduate from the HEA? Why doesn’t anyone seem to remember the former students? Is the kindly fairy headmistress all she appears to be? Is anyone? And the most important question of all: Can Rosamund change her story?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once upon a time, there lived a girl who wanted to escape the story she was a prisoner of... even if she didn't quite know it.
This tale doesn't deal with just ONE fairytale princess, but several, though Rosamund (or formerly Sleeping Beauty) is the new addition to the group. It puts a new spin on the classic we all know... how would you feel about being awoken by a kiss 💋 from a total stranger that's promising to love and cherish you forever, despite not knowing you, and is pretty much racing to the altar? 😳 Hmm... all notions of romance aside, it sounds like just the right moment for a Door of Opportunity to open, leading you to somewhere else, anywhere else where you might explore what your own chosen future holds! Curious? Oh, you don't even know the half of it...
That's the thing about this story! It explores things you may not have considered when it comes to fairytale tales, and happily-ever-afters, and gives us a fun, if at times dangerous, adventure to see just what happens when we take control of our own stories...a great lesson for the princesses, but also readers. There's no singular way that our stories have to unfold; making it our own is the beauty of choice, love, and life. It's empowering in its messages, giving us strong female characters (and a few male characters too!) that have to think, consider, and puzzle through things that may be bigger than they ever thought possible, but with the help of their new addition, they stand a chance of avoiding the onceupona's at the gate and owning their stories once and for all.
About the book...
Rumours of the Nazis coming for Czech children swept through the villages like a breeze through the trees, and the story was always the same…
They wanted our children to raise as their own
Since her husband, Josef, joined the Czech resistance three years ago, Anna Dankova has done everything possible to keep her daughter, Ema, safe. But when blonde haired, blue-eyed Ema is ripped from her mother’s arms in the local marketplace by the dreaded Brown Sisters, nurses who were dedicated to Hitler’s cause, Anna is forced to go to new extremes to take back what the Nazis have stolen from her.
Going undercover as a devoted German subject eager to prove her worth to the Reich, the former actress takes on a role of a lifetime to find and save her daughter. But getting close to Ema is one thing. Convincing her that the Germans are lying when they claim Anna stole her from her true parents is another…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've read quite a few books set in and around WWII, but this is the first time I've read one from the Czech perspective, and encountered a new branch of the evil that existed... the Brown Sisters. Don't be fooled by the term "Sisters" because they are neither religious nor related. No, these women were some of the most feared by mother's left behind with young children...or rather blue eyed, blond haired children. That's right. They weren't content with destroying the world at large. They had to take the most precious thing anyone can ever be granted... a child. They justified it because those they took looked like they belonged with those in the Reich's favor, and how could they leave them with those they viewed as unworthy?  Unworthy indeed...I'd say if they looked within, they'd certainly find themselves lacking, but I digress...

The lengths to which people will go to take what they feel is theirs. The inner strength some will find when all has been spent in order to save those they love. Both are on display between the pages of this remarkable novel, riddled with moments of heartbreak, despair, and the most tender of emotions...HOPE. I once had someone tell me the meaning of the word...HOLD ON, PAIN ENDS.  It really took by breath away in the moment, and has stuck with me ever since.  The way the story is written, you can't help but get caught up in all the feels on display as you fear for your life after a dark secret is inadvertently created by a sibling. You can't help but feel the weight of the world on your shoulders when those you know and love keep disappearing.  You don't know the incredible strength you'll find when all seems lost, yet you're their last hope. This moving tale brings to life a chapter from our shared history, paints it in truth, and leaves it out to dry like nobody's business. It'll keep you turning pages as everything seems utterly lost, only to gain potential ground as you hold your breath, and await the final sentence.

Family is thicker than blood... THE GERMAN MESSENGER by M.J. Hollows - REVIEW!

Family is thicker than blood...
I chose that title for this post because it fits the book we're about to explore PERFECTLY.  It's a new Historical Fiction title coming to you from Harper 360, and it takes you back to the treacherous times of WWII. It was a time without certainty, where the unknown was a constant, but for those that could and would fight back, their truth, their certainty was that they wouldn't take things lying down.  Ladies and gents, allow me to present today's book of choice...

About the book...

Liverpool, 1940. “Where’s George?” Ruth didn’t realise that she had grabbed hold of the other woman’s arms. “Where’s my son?”

Journalist Ruth Holt is struggling in the terror of the Blitz when her young son is suddenly snatched away in broad daylight. Soon after, the kidnappers’ demands arrive. They are working with the Nazis, and she has no choice but to co-operate, or the authorities will learn that she is harbouring secrets of her own.

Ruth’s job gives her access to critical information, and if she does not share it with Britain’s enemies, her child will face the consequences. Desperate, she falsifies information, lying to everyone: her employers, her family and her lover. But as the demands increase, the knife edge she walks on grows increasingly thin. If she falls, she will never save her son.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ruth was a formidable woman.  She had a lot on her plate...a husband off at war, a son shipped off to safety, an unfulfilling job at the local press, and late nights as a volunteer with the air raid wardens.  You might say keeping busy was just as much her doing her part, as it was to fill the empty hours.  While she has her time down to a fine art, her world gets turned upside down and inside out as all those carefully crafted walls come tumbling down in the most spectacular, and heartbreaking ways.  We have renewed worries over her son, the loss of family connections, and the struggle to keep her secrets intact...but we also have HOPE.  We also have love in unexpected places.  We also have the discovery of hidden depths of strength, and determination...things we take for granted in everyday life, but can mean the difference between living that life, and allowing it to be taken from us.  Ruth wasn't that woman.  She wouldn't take things lying down, no matter how dreary the outcome might look.  She fought, and she strived for more.  She took the weight of the world on her shoulders, and refused to let it go, even when it looked like she should.  She also found a kindred spirit in Anthony.
Anthony was a formidable man.  He had a lot on his plate...a son a distance away, a wife lost many years ago, a heart that wasn't healed emotionally or physically, days as a school teacher to the dwindling youth, and late nights as a volunteer air warden.  He was doing his part because the airmen wouldn't take him for health reasons, but he never felt it was quite enough.  The thing is...he ends up on the front line at home, fighting side by side to save others from the air raids, and while the walls are quite literally tumbling down around him, he still forges friendships, and unexpected connections, including one with our lady, Ruth.  The feelings that go with it are unexpected, but not entirely unwelcome, especially in times like these, however there's a time and place for everything, and these two will get their time, even if it's in the shadow of heartbreak.
This was a fascinating story that took you behind friendly lines to show you just how far the enemy would go to get what they wanted.  They'd exploit anyone.  They'd rob, or steal to call it their own.  They'd mow down entire cities, and end everyone in them, just to plant their flag and proclaim themselves superior.  The thing they didn't count on was the resilience of the people they were trying to expunge.  They too had feelings, family, and lives to protect...and they too would do anything to see them safe once again.  The lengths Ruth will go to in order to protect her son, and protect her secrets were without measure.  The extent of Anthony's love for them both shines through like a candle in the night.  Things are tedious right up to the bitter end, but vindication comes, and while it may not be peaceful, it is most certainly just.
A great read for Historical and Women's Fiction fans, from older teens through adulthood, with a touching reminder that family is truly thicker than blood.
Walden Pond Press presents... The Hurricanes of Weakerville by Chris Rylander - REVIEW!
Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today's review is coming in HOT.  How so?  Well, let's just say that while the team in today's featured title tries to pull a win out of you-know-where, some book enthusiast you know did a marathon read of this same said title in just under 4 hours...and is typing the review quite literally after having finished.  WHEW!  Yep, I'm tired, but I'm also ENTHUSIED, EXCITED, and so happy to share this book with all of you because while at first glance it appears to be for sports fans alone, it has SO MUCH MORE going for it than you'll ever know.  Well, okay, more than you knew before you started reading my post.  So, batters up!  It's time to take your reading game to the next level with today's title in the spotlight...
About the book...
All his life, Alex Weakerman has had one passion: baseball. Specifically, the Hurricanes of Weakerville, Iowa—the scrappy independent-league team owned by his Grandpa Ira.
Even as team and the town have fallen on tough times, there’s no place Alex would rather be than at the ballpark—a hot dog in one hand, a pencil and scorebook in the other, keeping track of each and every statistic. Alex has never been all that great at playing baseball, but that doesn’t matter. For someone as painfully awkward as Alex, being a fan—and a wiz with baseball stats—is all he needs.
When Grandpa Ira passes away, though, Alex is crushed. He’s lost his best friend, and he doesn’t see any way that the team will survive. But Ira, it seems, has one last trick up his sleeve: his will names Alex the new manager of the Hurricanes.
Alex is as excited as he is terrified at the chance to finally put some of his fantasy baseball genius to use. But as he sets to work trying to win over the players, he soon learns that leading them to victory is about more than just stats. Will he be able to save his team, his hometown, and his family legacy?
⚾     ðŸ’š     ⚾     ðŸ’š     ⚾     ðŸ’š     ⚾     ðŸ’š     ⚾
Weakerville had its grand start like all small towns.  Someone bought a bit of land, brought about a few businesses, discovered something to build upon, and POOF...a town is born.  Legends though...now those take more time, more thought, more heart, and this story houses a BIG one at that.
At first look, this is a story about a small town baseball team that's run out of luck, and run off the fans, leaving only the diehard believers behind in the bleachers to carry on the torch of their withering fandom.  Alex and his grandpa Ira were just such fans, but in truth, it was always more than just a game, more than just a way to pass time, and more than a collection of stats to decide whether the win was right around the corner, or the biggest lose was staring them down.  It was about spending time with friends and family.  It was about creating memories and traditions.  It was about celebrating the love of a game and watching players that truly enjoyed what they were doing, do it at their very best.
When Alex loses Ira, it seemed like we might lose him.  He was already struggling with life, with confidence, with making friends...but his grandpa was a wise old soul.  He knew what he was doing even when the odds seems so far out of his favor they weren't even in the same playbook, and you know why?  It wasn't because he was graced with some all knowing power, or foresight; it was because he BELIEVED.  He believed in a game that could build the bridges between generations.  He believed the underdog could have their day.  He believed in doing right by people, and playing the game instead of the numbers.  Most of all...he believed in Alex, and that's something that no one, not even Alex, could take away once given.  Watching Alex muddle through everything that comes his way was challenging, but the growth he experiences, the truths he realizes, and the friendships he makes were well worth the struggles.
So pick up this story because it looks good, catches your eye, or you're a big fan of the game...but stick with this story because the messages it has to share are so much more important than the final score, and a great reminder of the bigger things in life no matter your age.
About the book....
To oust his twin brother from the billion-dollar family food empire, CEO Samuel Kane sets him up to violate their father’s cardinal rule: no company romances. Enter Samuel’s new hire, Arlington Banks—the one woman his brother chased but never caught. Too bad the plan backfires when Samuel falls for the bait himself. Because Samuel and Arlie have a long-simmering history of their own. As things heat up between them, will his deception cost him everything—or will the secret Arlie’s keeping do the trick?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A little subterfuge never hurt anyone...right?
Well, okay, so feelings get hurt, and there's definitely more to the story on BOTH sides than either Samuel or Arlie put on the table, but in the end, the just desserts are rewarding for EVERYONE involved!  I loved the good brother, bad brother vibe...though in retrospect, the good was playing at being bad with the whole setup business, but I digress...he had good intentions at heart, even if HE didn't know what his heart was trying to tell him.  She was trying to get her feet back under her after having more than a rug pulled, but the games she steps into are far beyond what her healthy curiosity could have conjured.  I'll just say this...thank goodness for good friends that will kick us in the pants when we need it, and thank heavens for astute observations because it can mean the difference between getting up close and personal with the man of our dreams...versus his brother!
A great story with revenge, second chances, and an HEA you'll adore!
About the book....
Shy Lone Star heiress Caitlyn Lattimore is eager to ditch her wallflower status. So when her best friend playfully suggests she practice dating, Caitlyn goes one further. She asks friend of a friend Dev Mallik to give her boyfriend lessons. The spark between them soon turns fun into fire. But is Caitlyn setting herself up for heartbreak? Because Dev’s exacting parents want just the right woman for their son—and they aren’t so sure she’s the one…
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A book for all the shy, out of practice gals out there that have it, but perhaps don't quite know how to flaunt it!  Caitlyn was a gem, even with her random turns as a fountain (inside joke!).  She had a heart of gold that had been smashed by an idgit and with her inhibitions slightly lowered, she spoke out of turn...and gained the world.  It's hard to lay your heart on the line, especially so openly and honestly with revelations that may seem embarrassing to some, but as I said, she was a star, as was the recipient of the chance she gave.  Dev was a surprise, especially when we find out how involved his family is with his life (it's a culture thing), but it was refreshing.  He was trying to strike out on his own, and yet still maintain that connection with his family, respectfully.  Grant it, he could have acted a bit faster when Caitlyn is mistaken for a lady of the night by his father...don't ask, or rather READ IT...but by book's end, he redeemed himself in my eyes...and I'm very curious to see how things play out for other characters mentioned as they try to unravel the mystery around the Lattimore estate!
A great story filled with smiles, laughs, a dash of steam, and an HEA you'll be more than satisfied with in the end.
