Happy BOOK BIRTHDAY week to... NEW FROM HERE by Kelly Yang - REVIEW!

HI guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're celebrating the VERY recent BOOK BIRTHDAY of the latest title from author Kelly Yang out now via Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers!  It's a timely title that I was quite surprised to find out was inspired by her family's REAL LIFE struggle to find their way in this crazy, pandemic world...where the virus isn't the only thing we still need to overcome.  Ladies and gents, let's get between the pages of today's book of choice...

Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Release Date:  03/01/22

About the book...
When the coronavirus hits Hong Kong, ten-year-old Knox Wei-Evans’s mom makes the last-minute decision to move him and his siblings back to California, where they think they will be safe. Suddenly, Knox has two days to prepare for an international move—and for leaving his dad, who has to stay for work.

At his new school in California, Knox struggles with being the new kid. His classmates think that because he’s from Asia, he must have brought over the virus. At home, Mom just got fired and is panicking over the loss of health insurance, and Dad doesn’t even know when he’ll see them again, since the flights have been cancelled. And everyone struggles with Knox’s blurting-things-out problem.

As racism skyrockets during COVID-19, Knox tries to stand up to hate, while finding his place in his new country. Can you belong if you’re feared; can you protect if you’re new? And how do you keep a family together when you’re oceans apart? Sometimes when the world is spinning out of control, the best way to get through it is to embrace our own lovable uniqueness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's funny.  Who would have thought that this many years later, we'd still be worried about a little old virus?  I mean, it started SO FAR AWAY from where most of you reading this are, and I bet you've all got your own stories about having to quarantine in place, or toilet paper shortages, or deep seated fears that you never knew you even had coming to the surface like a nervous laugh at a funereal.  Sorry to get a bit morbidly graphic there, but it's the truth...and the truth isn't always pretty, but it should be kind.
I was shocked to find out that this story was inspired by the author's real life experience of trying to outrun the virus and keep her family safe.  I mean, you realize as an adult that things like this happened, and working in what was/is considered an essential field, I got to see a lot of things unfold that I never thought I'd see, nor wish to again...but baring witness, even somewhat fictionally, to the outright hatred they faced, while struggling so hard to simply make it was a tough role.  I wanted to reach into the story and set the wrongs to right...or as Knox so eloquently put it, be the echo in their time of need.  That's something we all need to learn.  No matter our background or heritage, we all matter, and no one deserves to face down bullies on their own.  The author makes a great point...love IS the vaccine to hatred.  The old "can't we all just get along" line has a ring of truth.  If we invite love into our hearts and approach others the way we would want to be approached, the kindness we show and the smiles we share can go a long way in opening doors that were previously closed.
Whether fictional or factual, this is one family you'd definitely want to call you own.  They have ups and downs, including a garage sale gone awry and a BIG health scare, but despite it all, or perhaps in spite of it all, they love each other and would go to the ends of the earth to make sure they were together.  So open your minds, and your hearts to a story that we need during times that, while considerably brighter than before, are still ever changing, unknown, and littered with prejudices of the past that need to be buried with it.  It doesn't do any good to hide it, but learn from it...and you're GOLD.
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we’re shining the spotlight on a title released in the middle of the pandemic that aimed to help make the big scary a little easier for kiddos to get a handle on, while also trying to lighten the mood. Hey, there’s no reason why even with something as big as this that you can’t learn more and have a little fun too! With that being said, I give you today’s title AND song in the spotlight…
The Teensy Weensy Virus Book and Song
by
Sherri L. Rose
Illustrated by
Megan E. Brawand
About the book…
COVID-19 is a big deal—but with all that adults have to worry about, it’s easy to overlook the pandemic’s impact on children. The Teensy Weensy Virus Book and Song for Preschoolers provides a way for parents and caregivers to reinforce the importance of safety measures (like wearing masks, washing hands, and social distancing) to children, while giving kids the opportunity to ask questions and share their feelings. Embracing the latest science and backed by medical professionals, The Teensy Weensy Virus pairs simple, kid-friendly explanations with bright, colorful illustrations, while offering additional resources for adults and an informative song (sung to the tune of The Itsy Bitsy Spider) to help lighten the mood as families engage with this serious topic.
About the Author & Songwriter...
Sherri Rose grew up in Richmond, Virginia. As a retired pediatric and family nurse practitioner, as well and a hospice and palliative care nurse, she recognizes the critical importance of helping children understand what is happening during this pandemic that is currently sweeping our globe. COVID-19 has created so much stress, anxiety, grief, and loss for adults—imagine what children must think but be unable to express!
Inspired by her concerns for the smallest among us—as well as by her own significant grief over not being able to hug her children and grandchildren during quarantine—Sherri began to write this book to help preschoolers understand what is going on and why all of us must follow new rules. As a mother of three daughters and three stepdaughters, as well as a grandmother to many, she hopes that the resources found in this book will be useful to all the readers all over the world. Sherri is having six translations created to spread the importance of basic safety guidelines with this very smart virus. She wrote the lyrics to the little song at the end of the book to have something light and happy after reading about a serious topic.
About the book...
Love knows no distance. I Miss You Most helps children through the heartache of distance by showing them how to hold their loved ones near. Whether exploring the seas as pirates or twirling like ballerinas, imagination can bridge even the greatest distance. Because time with those you love is the most magical thing of all!
It's a Picture Book we never thought we would need for a generation that needs it more than they even realize.
This brightly colored, whimsically illustrated book helps remind little ones that yes, we may be apart in distance, but we are still hand in hand within our hearts. It suggests the use of imagination to have adventures while we stay safe. It makes a case for all the fun to be had virtually or across the wires as we help stop the spread of this pandemic. It gives little ones that extra ray of hope that one day our new norm will be in the past and we will once again be able to gather with those we love with less fear of putting them or ourselves at risk. It quietly asks us to do our part to make it to a better tomorrow...and in light of everything that has happened, and the progress that has been made thus far, I truly don't believe it to be too much.
Once upon a COVID-19 Christmas... REMEMBER TO SMILE by Shannon Q. McDonald - REVIEW!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're throwing the book spotlight on a Picture Book title that was set in motion thanks to the lovely...the wonderful...coronavirus!  (*so silent I can hear crickets chirping*)  Okay, so those adjectives have never before been uttered, let alone written in conjunction with this definitely-not-wonderful pandemic, but the book that we're setting our sights on today helps make a bit more sense of the "new world" we're living in for the wee ones among us.  I mean, we've not grown up wearing masks, so it's hard enough to get use to, so imagine the strangeness to a child...
Ladies and gents, may I present today's title in the spotlight and ebook of choice...
Remember to Smile
by
Shannon Q. McDonald
About the book...
As more and more places are requiring masks, and young children are having to experience so many new, confusing, and sometimes scary things, Remember to Smile adds playfulness and laughs around mask-wearing to help kids see masks as something fun. With the help of some giggles and an adorable wiener dog based on the author’s family pup, Remember to Smile will help children become more comfortable with the idea of face masks, and encourage them to keep smiling, even if it has to be hidden from sight at times
Remember to Smile proudly supports the COVID-19 Relief Fund (for Teachers and Students) through the non-profit organization AdoptAClassroom.org. Visit remembertosmile.org to learn more.
Available now in hardcover, paperback and ebook at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever books are sold.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

With an adorable puppy leading the way, readers of all ages will gladly follow this adventure from start to finish!  Throughout our journey, we discover the many types of masks that are worn in day to day life, depending on your job or occupation, and the importance of wearing their gorgeous smile whether it can be directly seen or not.  We see the many fabulous shades these protective shields come in, and the patterns that can add a dash of pizazz to your every day outfit.  We also see how they can help us be as serious or silly as we want to be, especially with masks that give us the face of a puppy, kitten, or our favorite animated character!

The most important thing it does though is help normalize in a kid-friendly way a situation that is anything but normal...and THAT can be the difference between having kiddos wear this not-as-comfortable accessory willingly and an every day struggle.  We know they're not fool proof, but until things are safer, they're are certainly better than nothing in most situations.  Much applause to the author for bringing this perfectly timed topic to the forefront and making it absolutely FUN-tastic!

Along with daughter Sloane (5), son Sean (3) and their wiener dog, Rudy, they are now residents of sunny Delray Beach, Florida. GUEST POST:  Author Jay Dee
Four Things I’ve Rediscovered During Quarantine
(And One I Have Not!)

When asked to create a list of things I’ve rediscovered during quarantine, the first thing that popped into my head was all the stuff I’ve seen others rediscover. I have certainly sampled the smorgasbord of hobbies that quarantine life has presented us all.

So, here are four things I’ve genuinely rediscovered, plus one that won’t stick.

Play: Rediscovered
Quarantine has brought a whole new meaning to the wordplay. Simple pleasures, digital and analog, have become wonderful ways to spend time with my husband, friends, and family over video chat. While potluck dinners and get-togethers may be on hold, there’s a whole new way to play that seems somehow more uncomplicated and pure.

Sure it will be nice to get together with friends and family again (soon I hope!), but I never want to lose this appreciation for playtime.

Top things I’m Playing right now:
Dominion (Board/Card Game)
Legos (Childhood Memory)
Jackbox⦁ Games (Video Game)

Chilling Out: Rediscovered
I’m a pretty hyperactive person, so this forced slowdown, like many others, and put my core identity at risk. So, in my tiny 500-sq. Ft apartment in San Francisco, I’ve taped a post-it note to the corner wall I commandeered as an “office,” which reads: Chill. It’s a Pandemic.

I’ve heard that we are all in the same storm, but different boats. Being kind to myself and to others who are all impacted differently by the pandemic has had a profound impact on my life. I used to go crazy doing nothing, feeling like I’d wasted the day away. Now I appreciate that “just chilling” can be a remarkably powerful thing to choose to do.

Top things I’m Chilling Out with:
The Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy (SciFi)
Home Brewed Coffee (Decaf after 11)
Texas Heat (Cocktail)

Jump-Rope: Rediscovered
With gyms closed, it was tempting to feel “off the hook” and just let my new intensified snacking habit become a replacement way of life. Fortunately, a garage, a yoga mat, and a jump rope have kept a sedentary lifestyle at bay.

Does anyone remember Jump Rope For Heart? While “rediscovering” this website for my blog post is bursting my bubble to see elementary school kids crushing my adult record, it’s funny to think back to raising money in Flower Mound, TX, through the same program. (Which randomly reminds me of other wonderful childhood activity-a-thon’s like Book It!)

My top quarantine Physical Activities:
Jumping Rope
Hiking

Giving: Rediscovered
I swear this is not meant to invoke, “Ooh, look at me.” Friends, family, and coaching clients are sharing a similar pull towards giving back. It’s a beautiful part of human nature—building community—that as we settle into this “new normal,” we seek ways to help others.

I credit this to an ability to reframe our own situation. Sure, things may not be great, but they are likely a lot better than they are for many others. It’s easy to focus on the bad news, but giving back is a quick forcing mechanism to remember how lucky I am. Writing Grow Through It to benefit UNICEF’s coronavirus relief efforts was a part of this, but simpler ways to give back have popped up too.

Top Ways I’m Giving Back:
● Giving more time to pro bono coaching
● Choosing local, small businesses whenever possible
● Donating “Grow Through It” proceeds

Cooking: Have Not Discovered
No matter how many Instagram and Facebook posts I see about the incredible sourdough a friend has made or the adventurous meals they’re trying, I cannot get into this. Sure, I had high hopes. I even went so far as to bake cookies and a loaf of soda bread (way easier than sourdough), but it took almost no time at all before carry out returned as the main staple for meals.

While anything can happen, I do not think a turnaround is likely, and this is one quarantine bandwagon that I’ll let pass me by. I think my food delivery is right behind it anyway.

About the author...

Jay Dee is an author, a certified coach, and the freshly crowned video chat expert for his nieces and nephews. As the coronavirus lockdown seemed to put life on pause, he was inspired to create a book that reminded kids (and himself!) that even days spent sheltering in place are opportunities to grow. Jay lives in San Francisco and is the author of the bestseller, The Night Before The Night Before Christmas. Find his other books at www.krainekreative.com.

The Illustration Team...

Jacob Chalkley
Jacob is UX Designer based out of San Francisco, CA. His passions include music, movies, and making sure his portfolio is 5yrs out of date. His previous achievements include runner-up for student council president for Van Buren Elementary 1996, perfect attendance award for Plainfield Middle School in 1999, and achieving a bowling score of 132 in 2018. He has been using his lockdown time to prepare for his firstborn son due May 27th. He hopes to be a frontrunner for “World’s Best Dad” in 2020.

Feras Khagani
Having an interest in drawing ever since he picked up a book about how to draw Marvel Superheroes, Feras has continued to practice illustration well into his adult life. He loves to spend his time exploring art, books, movies, games, and YouTube essays. He’s both excited and grateful to contribute to a project aimed at helping others in need, and prays that everyone stays safe! He also wants to thank the brave medical experts and essential workers that are keeping our society going in this pandemic. His work can be found under his name on Instagram.

Ishmam Ahmed
Ishmam is an illustrator, engineer, and writer based in Minneapolis, MN. He got his start as a kid who got in trouble for doodling in the middle of science class. He’s now well-known for his power portraits and digital paintings on ishmam.deviantart.com and recently fulfilled his long-time dream of illustrating for a children’s book. When he’s not hammering out his next creative project, which can eventually be found on ishmam.com, he’s reading novels in his hammock, biking around the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, or cooking up a curry.

Axel Schmidt
Axel is an illustrator based out of the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA.  During the COVID-19 lockdown, a random connection was made through an unlikely forum that presented the opportunity to participate in this project.  While never his goal nor intention for his art, many people who viewed his work often commented that he should do illustrations for children’s books.  So he made the jump to the realm where many people felt his talents should already be.  By day, he is a Project Manager in the renewable energy world and when not working or illustrating, he can often be found biking, hiking or camping in the great PNW trails and mountains.  His work can be seen at: www.adsillustrations.com

Darren Geers
