Okay, okay, as much as the synopsis makes this seem like the story is predominantly about Robert, it's not!  Yes, he's a key player, but his siblings share the spotlight equally as much, if not more so...and that's just the way we like it.

This is a character driven story...that is to say there's a story/plot line, but without this fascinating sibling trio, it'd be just another story.  Robert is the brother that was always there, but more so in the background.  He is a lovely man with a kind heart, knowledge to share, and great baking as well as gardening skills.  What he lacked was more in the presence department.  He didn't speak up, stand out, or rock the boat...for better or worse, or in this case, for the worst of his sister Hattie.  No, she was pressed into a doomed marriage because no one had the gall to stand up for her, let alone would she stand up for herself.  Which brings us to Hattie...whom I was rooting for from the very start.  I love how we meet her, though the emotional turmoil she's in isn't pleasant, because we can see that while her sparkle may have been dimmed by the louse she was married to for so long, she was still there shining like a diamond underneath.  All she needed for a little care, and her moment to shine...which THANK GOODNESS she gets in spades.  In the mean time, her soft heart allows more shenanigans from her younger sister, Bunty, but it's not a kindness that goes completely to waste.  Realizations are made, progress is reached for, and when the cards eventually fall, everything is as it should be.  As for Bunty, she came off as the spoiled younger sibling that she was, not taking anything too seriously unless it was all about her, and yet she still had some redeeming qualities even if they were harder to find.

So you see, they were all STRONG characters, and they certainly left their mark on me, which can be a hard task considering I read so much!  It's hard enough at times to remember the character names, let alone specific traits, after a book ends, but I have a feeling this trio will stick with me for a while.  If you're looking for your next read this holiday season, or perhaps a gift for the Women's Fiction fan in your life, this is definitely a book I wouldn't pass over, and an author I'd make room for in your reading world!

It's a quote shared with this group of friends by their favorite teacher in primary school, Miss Hamilton.  She was a breath of fresh air in the stagnant school house, and while they were originally dreading their prospects for the year, she turned their frowns upside down in a hurry, while creating memories and habits that would influence a lifetime.  Meeting her then was fortuitous, but meeting her once again many (many!) years later was a blessing in disguise...as was "meeting" this "class"...

It's a tale with multiple storylines that all intertwine in some fashion, but it works.  You get to know Josie as she's celebrating her anniversary...solo, thanks to life's cruel swipe of fate...but stalwart in belief that keeping her beloved in her heart will help keep her in love through the coming years.  We greet Lin as she's burnt her other half's birthday dinner, and, like the Shania Twain song, he pretty much says mmm, I like it like that.  They've been together forever, but she's recently had reason to worry that maybe all isn't quite as it seems. Being introduced to Minnie was like greeting a best friend.  She understands the beauty, wonder, and power of the written word, loves nothing better than to escape between the pages, and won't be told how she feels..."...a romance takes two people, Felix, and you are just one...".  These ladies have a lot of ups and downs about to come round, but one things they can always count on is each other.  The bonds of their friendship run deep, and come heck or highwater, they will be there for each other.

Honestly, I've loved all the books I've read thus far from this author, and this one is no exception.  The characters are further in years, but that doesn't negate the story or the experiences...they just have more life under their belts, wisdom to share, and laughs to be had!  I felt inducted into the 'Silver Ladies' group, and honored to meet this wildly amazing trio, as well as the rest of their community that end up being honorary members by story's end.  There's a lot of heart and heartache, but you can bet everything will come out tip top if these ladies have anything to say about it!

We've a got a dual timeline story featuring sisters, by blood or by choice, thrown into a world of tumult filled with danger, adventure, new beginnings, and unfinished business.   The author weaves an atmospheric tale that really draws you in.  Whether you're back in the 1300's fleeing for your life to a place you only heard mention of, to people you don't know the merit of, with nothing but your word, a stolen horse, clothes that are not your own, and your quick wit...or back in the present looking for direction, acceptance, and a chance not only to find yourself, but perhaps a little love along the way, you know where you are, when you are, and decidedly who you are, even when borrowing the name of another.  

Though I'm a huge fan of both Historical Fiction and Historical Romance, and I was certainly delighting in the story from the past that has its ties to the present, I think I actually felt closer to the sisters in the here and now.  Something about their bond and how it resonated so closely to that of those that came before, despite being biological in this case.  Something about how they approached everything being thrown at them, from the chance of a lifetime to the lifetimes that still echo through the halls of the castle they are currently calling home.  You get a real sense of their closeness and the fact that they would do practically anything for the other if it was within their power.  Yes, they were sisters, but even without that piece, the love they shared was remarkable, stood the test of time in one fashion or another, and made them endearing.  Stories like this remind us that while centuries may separate the events unfolding, and modernization may have changed the landscape which we work within, the basic fundamentals, the bottom line human needs and concerns, are what connect us through the good times, and the bad.

All in all, an enchanting tale that will leave you breathless from its beauty, heartache, and, ultimately, its message that while time may pass, some bonds last forever, and nothing is stronger than love, in all its forms.

This isn't just a story about a book club, although that certainly would have been enough of a draw for many of us because HELLO, a book about book loving people?  Yes please!  No, this is a story about how much of a difference a year can make in the life of anyone, let alone this lovely group of people.  Some are friends, some will be before long.  Some are estranged without even realizing it, yet will work towards coming together before things unravel for good.  Some are surprised by events they could never have foreseen...for better, or worse.  Some friends become family, and some family take flight to chart the next chapter of their lives in the great big world.  There are highs and lows, heartbreak and heart song, secrets uncovered and realizations made, all with a background filled with utter loveliness from the township to the people, and everything in between.

I think I felt most for Jeannie.  She was the rock, the anchor, the one to be counted on to be there in the end, and yet she had so much left to give.  It's not that she wasn't living her life, but it certainly wasn't in full color, and while that lesson doesn't come easy, it does come and very much so before it's too late.  Though a grandmother herself, her mother was still a force to be reckoned with.  Nary found without her sharp whit, Violet has a joke for every situation, but a steeliness beneath that could weather the toughest storm.  Aurora, the most free spirited among this circle of friends, was allowing things to happen naturally, accepting time as it proceeded, but even the freest bird can be caged inadvertently, and the results are never quite what we expect.  I was surprised by her story's turn, and yet not.  It fit perfectly.   On the other hand, we've got Ruth, who is steadfast and sure, but not without her own secrets, and surprises, which eventually turns into a relationship who don't quite see coming, yet couldn't be happier for her when it does.  The twins cause their own ruckus, but growing up was never easy.  Mark and Verity certainly made a case for singledom...and yet, an even better case for working together, listening to one another, and not letting things stew.  I could go on and on, but I won't because this cast of characters deserves their time in the sun, and will make a different impact on every reader.

When all is said and done, it wasn't a book about an epic change, the world ending, or some other headline grabbing occurrence, but about life, and making sure our own days are well lived.  It doesn't matter what we set out to do at the start, it matters how we finish.  If we reach that set destination, fine and dandy, but if we veered off, took an offshoot path, or set a new course, those are just as amazing, if not more so, moments too.  Our lives are our to chart, and we are the ones that get to say whether we lived our days to their fullest.  As one of may favorite songs so aptly phrased..."If you have a dream, go chase it....If you find love, embrace it.." ...lessons we all could use a reminder of at any age.  A great read for Women's Fiction fans that love to get lost in the story, but also in the lives of the characters living it.

Oh this book could just as easily have been titled The Life, Times, and Adventures of Mimi Solitaire, and no one would have blinked an eye.  She is the star of the show in so many ways.  Mimi may be up there in years, and experiences, but she lives loudly, and without shame, as we all should!  She is her own person, and yes, she may tire more easily now, forget the usual pleasantries of today, and take a few chances others would turn their nose up at, but she is genuine, she is true to herself, and she is a doll!  I couldn't imagine having not met this vibrant woman, so much so that as I type this now, I'm tearing up!  Yes, in truth.  There are many reasons, what with everything that transpires between the epages, but the biggest one is that fictional or not, you can't help but care for this remarkable character...and the same goes for her "entourage".

We have her sons that care for her oh so deeply, but not by placating her and trying to change her into someone she's not, but by cherishing her and how her strength and love molded them into the men they are today.  Which was my favorite?  Well, they all had their positives, and while my heart didn't match with any of them in particular, I was beyond thrilled with Jess' match.  Oh yes, I haven't mentioned Jess yet.  What begins as a place to call home while her own home is under renovation turns into a life changing experience that opens hearts, ignited flames, and brings her into a family fold she never anticipated.  Jess, herself, is also a remarkable woman, having had her own experiences in life and love and loss...and while she is the catalyst for many of the positive changes occurring in the McKinlay household, she's in for a few surprises of her own.  Then there's Isabella, Mimi's long time friend til the end and partner in crime, the memories of those she's loved before, and the hope she holds on to for a love of her own still to come.

It's a heartwarming novel from start to finish, and one I am truly grateful to have found.  Go ahead, take a chance on these grand dames and new friends, and you'll feel like one of the hens in no time flat.  A great recommendation for Women's Fiction and Contemporary Fiction fans of all ages.

I love a dual timeline when it's done right, and this one is another great example of just that...and maybe even a step further. You see, once upon a time, Grace Cotter lived a simple life. She held some sway over herbs and wildlife thanks to the teachings of her gran, and a gentle heart, but those weren't enough to spare her from the tragedies of life...including the end of her own. Meanwhile, in present day life, Cassie is struggling along after having her heart broken twice, for very different reasons, and is having a difficult time moving forward. Her friends mean well, but her heart's not in it. She needs time to heal, time to let her soul repair itself, time to get back to herself...and yet in seeking that resuscitation of her own life, like recognizes like in the sadness of her soul, bringing her that much closer to uncovering a mystery CENTURIES in the making. Oh, I'm telling you friends, THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING. It had just enough eeriness to keep you on your toes, just enough heartache to make you wish it away, just enough beauty to keep you looking for more, and so much intrigue as things unfolded that there was no way you could be forced to step away. There was sadness and joy, hope found in hopeless times, and tragedy turned right once again. Your heart was tangled in the story from the start, whether you wanted it to be or not, and the only way to truly satisfy the connection was to see it to the mesmerizing end.

Here's something to wrap your mind around...

...ever notice that the majority of contemporary fiction works with a romantic lean tend to be about 20 - 30 somethings? What about AFTER that? I mean, love isn't JUST for a particular age group, right? So, why wouldn't you want a story starring an older leading lady/man? Why indeed!

I've had this thought before, and contemplated it a bit with a different series/author. When the question was actually posed to the writer, the reply was something along the lines of who wants to read an older person's love story. Umm... *raises hand*...and I'm pretty sure I see SEVERAL of you out there raising your hands along with me. A romance or love story isn't JUST about the bedroom scenes for goodness sake...although some are and other prefer just that and hey, to each their own...but it's about the story, the heart, the how-they-got-there and where-do-they-go-from-here. Young or old-er, people are still split between the camps of forever love found and forever still looking.

This story gives us a leading lady that I think most would aspire to be as strong as, as brave as, and lovely and kind as some day. Though my heart broke for her in the opening scenes, that was a tragedy SO well played! I mean, I was meant to stay downtrodden, and yet...I was busting out the giggles and smiles. He deserved it 110%; trust me. As her new life progresses, she meets love in its various forms, and learns so much about herself as well as those she surrounds herself with. She creates a new family from her chosen tribe, and while not forsaking her past, is gloriously looking ahead to her future.
