Bookish Inspirations for My New Cornish Romance Series

How exciting to drop by and share with all the readers at Portable Magic today! If you’re like me, you probably grew up reading classic children’s novels full of impossible adventures that most of us would love to go on -- stories that transport us to a world of wonder with a mere flip of the page. I still love to visit those stories from time to time, as I suspect you do too. In fact, some of them ended up becoming the inspiration for parts of my new Cornish romance series (although my grown-up heroine’s quest is a little less magical, of course!). So keep reading below to learn which books are behind the roots of Maisie’s Cornish experience, a series that offers its own romantic escape for readers to dive into!

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

“The bottom had dropped out from beneath my world, and I had yet to plunge all the way into its

She’s definitely a bit naive at times and so completely charmed by her surroundings that she takes more risks than she should, probably, in her quest to discover the key to her dreams. There’s much to be curious about in her new world, though, from the quirky staff she joins at the seaside hotel, to the mysterious, wealthy, and eccentric guests who grace its threshold. Entangled in a series of quirky adventures, she can’t help being most curious of all about Sidney Daniels, the enigmatic village groundskeeper. His secrets will lead her down the biggest rabbit hole yet...but perhaps it also leads to the answer she’s been seeking all along.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Ah, how I loved this one growing up. The Gothic house with creepy corridors, a proper ancestral

portrait gallery, and a forgotten garden locked away from visitors was right up my alley (as was

the 1987 made for television adaptation from Hallmark Hall of Fame). I loved the story’s slightly spooky atmosphere, along with its heartwarming messages of friendship and healing. In a way, Maisie’s connection with Sidney and his friend Dean is rather like a grown-up version of the Mary, Dickon, Colin trio, as their kinship slowly coaxes Dean from his self-confessed ‘ogre’ status. After all, it’s a special bond forged partly in the hours wiled away in Dean’s neglected garden, where nature plays its own part in rekindling the artistic spark that was all but vanquished in the aftermath of tragedy.

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

In my reboot series about Maisie, known as ‘A Cornish Hotel by the Shore’, her journey takes on

darker tones in places, a bit more like Dorothy’s path to Oz than Alice’s wonder land or Mary

Lennox’s lost garden. For one thing, her world is uprooted and plunged into chaos. It’s because

of romantic tragedy, as well as life’s inevitable changes that Maisie finds herself not in Cornwall

anymore at least for part of the time that is, since Maisie can’t stand being totally separated from the place she thinks of as home now. If only she could click her heels and find herself back in those idyllic surroundings with Sidney by her side...but it will take much more than that for Maisie to find her way back to the love and the life that she lost.

Thanks so much to Gina for this chance to give her readers a glimpse of my newest romance read. It’s called Wedding Vows and Cornish Ribbons and is the first book in my new series about event planner Julianne’s adventures living and working in an idyllic Cornish village. In the scene below, Julianne worries about the rumors surrounding her newest client’s past history as a so-called ‘runaway bride’.

Our bell jingled. "You've come in early," said Nina, one of our first clients, who was chair of the local village summer fete committee at the time. "I thought I saw your bicycle parked outside. I wanted to tell you that the church won't be needing flowers this week, because Josie is bringing down a large arrangement of lilies from a posh wedding at the Castle hotel — she's working as a maid there on Saturday, and she said they'll go to waste if no one takes them home."

"I'll let Kitty know as soon as she comes in," I said. "I think she'll be relieved, since she has to coordinate the wine deliveries to the manor all this week. I'll be launching the new client's wedding plans on my own the first couple of days."

"Whose wedding?" asked Nina, interestedly.

"They're not really locals," I said. "Do you know the contractor near Par — Nic? He has a crew that does extensions, roofs, et cetera," I said. "His fiancee is the new declutterer and interior organizer who's just moved there, Deirdre Owen. If you need your sheds emptied and your living room cleared of junk and harmonized to your personality, she's the person you ring."

I could see the change come over Nina's face. "Really," she said, in a voice that held back whatever she really wanted to say. I had a sudden feeling I knew what it was, like a cold finger poking me inside.

"You know her?" I asked, lightly.

She hesitated. "More like ... of her," she corrected. So I was right.

Before I could say anything, she held up her hand to stop me. "Now, I never hold with gossip and don't like spreading it," she said. "But for what it's worth, I would caution you to be a bit careful. I know a young man from the Newquay airport who used to be in love with a woman called Deirdre Owen. If it's the same one, she broke off their engagement without warning a year ago, with only a week to go before the ceremony."

"And it wasn't the first time, I take it," I suggested.

Nina looked surprised. "I wouldn't know if that's true," she answered. "I only know her name because he was such a nice young man — good friends with my boy Johnny, before he moved to Reading. I think he said she was some sort of decorator — but it may not be the same person for all I know."

She touched my arm. "Anyway, I must go. I only stopped to tell you about the flowers." She closed the door behind her, as the little bell overhead jingled.

A decorator. That was too much of a coincidence. At this point, I was beginning to feel certainty that one of these stories was true, even if Deirdre hadn't run away from the altar with half the county, as some rumors probably claimed.

Returning to Cornwall with a Romance Series Reboot

Thanks so much to Gina for letting me tell her readers about my brand-new romance read, Return to Cornwall. It’s been a really special project for me, being a throwback to my long- running series A WEDDING IN CORNWALL. Featuring most of the same characters and the same cosy village as a setting, it brings exciting changes to the world of event planner Julianne that I’m hoping will delight both fans of the original series and those who are new to it. 

    

Deciding to reboot a favorite series after two years away wasn’t an obvious decision, exactly. After all, Julianne had already experienced a lot over the course of twelve novellas and a holiday short story. From celebrity weddings to charity balls and reality baking shows to name just a few of her adventures. Yet the possibility of someday returning to her world of planning larger-than- life events had been in the back of my mind almost since I penned the last page of A GARDEN IN CORNWALL. To my surprise—and excitement—fans continued to ask about further adventures and what started as a vague possibility gradually became inevitable. An idea began to take shape for a new stage in my heroine’s life, a more complex and somewhat richer story, with a hopefully fresh look at the characters readers have described as seeming almost like old friends. 

    

After all, time brings changes to everyone’s life—even those of fictional characters. And with Return to Cornwall picking up five years after the last story in the series, Julianne is no exception. Readers will find her life in a rather different place than before. She’s no longer quite the same starry-eyed fish out water who to came to Cornwall in search of a new start. She’s a busy mom of two and business owner, with a bit more on her plate than she can balance at times. She has the same determined spark from earlier books but a much harder time getting it to light...and the same could be said about romantic sparks between her and husband Matthew, the dishy Poldark-esque gardener who shares her crazy, sometimes idyllic life. And that’s before she finds herself planning the most challenging event of her career (which is saying a lot in Julianne’s case!). 

    

I really do hope readers will finds themselves swept away by a fun mix of reality and escapism when they open the book’s pages. There’s Julianne’s everyday life, with its relatable ups and downs and moments of sheer chaos. There’s an elaborate wedding to plan for an eccentric earl, a Cornish archaeology site with ties to Arthurian lore, and a handsome history student with an eye for the happily married Julianne. There’s a big secret for Julianne’s friend and business partner Kitty to keep, and a bit of career crisis for the maid-turned-novelist Gemma who drops in for an unexpected visit. And, of course, there’s plenty of other fun surprises and familiar faces to keep readers turning the pages in Julianne’s newest adventure.

...from A Train from Penzance to Paris

Thank you so much to Gina for letting me share an extract from my latest book! It is the 5th installment in my Cornish romance series about aspiring author Maisie. The scene below finds Maisie enroute to Paris with her favorite author, who is also her writing mentor. But as the letter she’s composing reveals, Maisie’s thoughts are still back in Cornwall, with the charming local groundskeeper, Sidney Daniels.

I paused, tapping my pencil as I gazed at a distant cathedral, the points of its grand towers rising above the village like a crown. Across from me, Alli paged through her little Chinese silk notebook, jotting down something that I could only hope belonged to her long-overdue fourth novel. The one devoted fans like me had been dying to read and had been denied for the past six years.

The villages we pass seem to beg me to visit them, wander down little lanes and look for cottages draped in red ivy, sprawling oaks let to live in cobblestone main squares. I have a thing for villages now, thanks to Port Hewer. I'll never pass one without wondering what kind of life happens there, and knowing it's never as small as I used to imagine, with everyone a quaint clone from an episode of 'Cranford.' 

I'll feel a little homesick if I visit one, even though the place I'll be missing isn't technically my home. Just the sight of somebody riding a sky-blue bicycle might leave me with the need to curl up with comforting chocolates and a cup of tea, incapable of writing a single word of my manuscript's revisions for the rest of the day.

The train announcement for the Paris arrival time caught my ear, snatches of dual-language nouns. That was good, because I almost closed my eyes and pictured myself cycling down the hill with Sidney, me waving at those scornfully-staring neighbors who knew all the rumors about his dubious past long before I did. Because of that picture, I felt my heart squeezed tighter in the grip of that longing.

I could write something else here.  Am I crazy? Crazy to get on a train to Paris with a stranger, who promises that I'll brush shoulders with movers and shakers any novelist would be dying to meet? Or would I have been crazier to stay behind and clean rugs and clear tables as a hotel maid, my fingers crossed while my manuscript lay in some publisher's 'to review' heap? 

I think everything I've done may have been certifiable, since the day Wallace Scott told me I'd been turned down for the mentorship program. And I mean that down to the moment I said the words 'I love you' and then boarded this train twenty-four hours later, like I was running away from the one person who had kept me and my dream from growing stale and dusty, and getting hopelessly lost in that world.

My pen didn't write those words down in reality, but these were the questions my mind had turned over multiple times since leaving. Never in a million years would Sidney have let me make another choice, we both knew. But I watched it cut him deeply, knowing there was nothing we could do. It had always been coming, I tried to tell myself. One of us was always going to leave, as we both knew. But it didn't help one bit.

"We're coming into the station shortly," Alli said, shoving her little notebook into her leather satchel. "Don't forget to collect all your suitcases from the upper compartment. Silly me, I once fell asleep on the line from Reading to Bristol after an all-night sing and carouse in a pub near the old playhouse — I bolted off the train just before the doors closed, only to remember I'd left my handbag underneath me on the seat. Twenty perfectly good quid lost, which was all my worldly possession at the time."

In keeping with most of the stories she'd told me, it rambled on its own path and left gaping holes. I was curious to know just when and where any of this fit in the unusual past of the celebrated writer. 

"Fortunately, I travel light," I answered, since all my worldly goods were tucked in the suitcase above, including my stuffed carnival prize giraffe Mr. Bubbles and my scant souvenirs from life in Port Hewer. Everything except my red cloche hat, which lay on my lap beneath my open journal.

My pen returned to the page. The clouds traveling past on the horizon couldn't move more quickly than my thoughts, and even the scenery is slow compared to my revolving question. I ask myself every hour if I'm truly ready for this, for what it means to take this leap as a writer. 

A wise friend once told me I could never know the answer without trying — that no one but me will ever know if I'm ready; or, for that matter, what I should do when the time comes. So I won't trust Alistair's word, or anybody else's, more than I trust my own judgment in this process. That's a promise. 

Write me a letter soon and tell me how you are. Tell me how things are in the village, and what Mrs. Graves and the vicar are doing, and of Dean battling his nurses. If you see anybody from the hotel, Molly or Brigette or Riley, or even Norm in his grumpiest mood, then tell them hello from me.

The train's speed becomes a mechanical crawl as it eases into the Gare du Nord station, and I feel as if a breath of steam is about to be released by the train, a mist that will part in dramatic revelation.  Of what, I ask myself? A postcard city? The stage for my dream's first act? Or maybe an experience I truly can't face as a twentysomething year-old former waitress, whom only a year ago was wearing a sequined Mexican hostess dress while taking taco orders. Here I am now, in the company of one of the world's most critically-acclaimed writers, about to take the streets of Paris — and my first manuscript's revision stage — by storm.

I am excited, terrified, and exhilarated. I have no clue if this is how destiny feels.
