Monster Max is back and still trying to follow his motto of doing good despite being a monster, from time to time at least. No, not doing good from time to time, being a monster from time to time. That's right! If you've never met our friend Max before (you're sorely missing out!), you don't know that he can change between a boy and a big orange-ish furry monster on a whim! He made a promise long ago (okay, two stories ago) to not abuse his strength/powers, and he's kept to it, but sometimes he's not given much of a choice.
You see, the great fanged one back in Krit will stop at nothing to get Max and his mom back to their nearby, but secretly cloaked old home. Let's just say he has one big power trip, and considers it the duty of those he rules to follow his every order. His latest scheme could've landed this duo in serious hot water, but thanks to kindness shown on Max's part, the honesty of a new little fur friend, a tech savvy bestie, and a feisty little cat, things might just turn out better than you think! 😉 I loved Max interacting with Sirius. It showed his kind heart under that big furry body, even if he was going against his parents orders to lend that helping hand. It turned out all right in the end despite the lies told and decisions made without thought to consequence, but it also served as a reminder that sometimes to do the right thing, you have to step away from what you know.
A great addition to the series, and a fun reading treat for fans of Middle Grade Fiction from the small to the tall!

When Robin grew up he thought he wanted to be a cavalry officer until everyone else realised that putting him in charge of a tank was a very bad idea. He then became an assistant gravedigger in London. After that he had a career frantically starting business- es (everything from dog-sitting to cigars, tuition to translation)... until finally settling down to write improbable stories to keep his children from killing each other on long car journeys.

About the book...
Max and Peregrine are volunteering at an old people’s home, when strange things start to happen: one resident is walking on the ceiling; one is riding their wheelchair through walls; and Reggie says his marmalade is haunted (although no one listens). Can Max and his friends work out what’s happening to protect his family and the local community? Things aren’t looking good - the Marmalade Ghost is turning into a gloopy Godzilla, Max falls out with his (joint) best friend, and then, just when it can’t get any worse, someone kidnaps Max’s cat, Frankenstein... will they meet a sticky end?
Max and friends are back in a brand new adventure...and as previously mentioned, things are about to get rather sticky. You see, it seems there are a few folks in his mom’s past that can’t quite let things go, and this time, they’re sending in the “troops” to accomplish their dastardly mission. Meanwhile, Max has taken his “do good” motto and applied it to the local old peoples’ home. Why there? His monster senses were going off the charts, and if there’s anything he’s learned from the first adventure in monstering...TRUST THE MONSTER SENSES. Good thing too because things take on a seriously possessed turn...including Reggie’s marmalade. Yep, that’s right. It’s become the host of a particularly nasty spirit that wants nothing more than to gum up the works...which he does rather well...leaving out stalwart neighborhood heroes at a loss on how to take him out. A little ingenuity, a spoonful of humble pie, a heaping serving of friendship, and a good shake of courage….all add up to their recipe for success...and a grand adventure for readers!
I love how the author brings Kritt to life, even if most everyone they’ve met thus far wants to kidnap or maim them. It’s fun, funny, and interesting to meet the cast of critter characters thought up and really puts the imagination to work with the descriptions. I appreciate that despite the evil-ish influence over them in their homeland, we’re shown that a people should not be taken as a whole. One apple does not in fact spoil the bunch...you just have to remove the bad one. Seeing the turn from bad to good reminds us that we are not what others make us to be, but the result of our decisions and choices. Last, but certainly not least, the friendship factor. The author shows us that a strong friendship can survive disagreements, and that that coming back together through understanding, acceptance, and maybe even a little bit of concession on both parts, helps infuse it with its own powerful brand of magic.

About the book...
Max is an unusual 9-year-old. He can turn himself into a huge, bin- eating monster by BURPING. Being a monster is brilliant, unless he sneezes (which turns him back) and he finds himself far from home in just his pants.
Max decides to be more responsible and ‘protect and do good stuff’, starting with catching a local vandal. But his nemesis, Peregrine, is convinced Max is the vandal, and invents his POOP (Portable Operating Omni Prison) machine to trap him. If Peregrine can prove the truth, Max and his mother could be put in a zoo … or worse. Max will have to use his wits as well as his strength to catch the real culprit, before Peregrine can catch him…
This was an adventure I embarked off completely off my reading schedule. I was done with the book I was reading, adrift without my calendar, and BOOM...the cover called to me in my reading app and the rest is history!
I gotta say, Max was a hoot and a half! The ability he has is unique enough as it is, but his attempts at trying to do good and it constantly being thwarted by seemingly half-wit nincompoops is ridiculous! I say half-wit because Peregrine is actually on to something with his out-there-sounding contraptions. I mean the POOP (see book description for explanation...I'm not actually making a potty joke) was some serious...STUFF...and almost caused the end of Max's exploits when he...well, when everything hit the fan! *ahem* Anyway...suffice it to say that not every person is quite as adept at catching our young monster come young man in the act, and sometimes he DOES actually get the drop on others, but while his stealth needs work, his heart is in the right place. I mean, he could just go on a rampage, but he doesn't...although there is a pesky little “visitor” from lands only his family knows of that seems to be dead set on causing as much ruckus as possible, but that a story for you to explore once you take the jump between the pages to discover all the wonder, all the magic, all the wild weirdness that you didn't know you were missing out on!
Oh, and one final thing...the BOBBLE HAT mentioned in the title is ACTUALLY a thing! And to think all this time it was...I mean, umm....where is that thing? *whistles*
