The Need for Speed

STRENGTH AND SPEED
Strength and speed are very important in football. The fastest players are usually wide receivers, cornerbacks, and running backs. A good blocker on the offensive line needs strength more than speed, but they also need science. It turns out that running backs require a lot of science, too. Grab your lab coat, and let’s go all STEM on this game.

THE STUDY OF MOTION
When talking about motion in football, we look at three key points: position, speed, and acceleration. Position can be as simple as where a running back lines up on the field. They line up in the backfield, usually a few steps away from the quarterback and even farther away from the defensive line. A running back will usually have a few steps to accelerate, or speed up, before a defensive player can get to him. The runner hopes to achieve a high speed as quickly as he can. Some running backs don’t have a lot of speed, but they can accelerate quickly. This gives them a burst of speed to pull away from the defense until someone faster catches up and tackles them. Other runners are slow to accelerate, but once they do, they can reach a high speed. Sometimes a running back will start out slowly on purpose. The runner might move carefully, to the right or left, waiting for an opening in the offensive line. When he sees it, he has to accelerate quickly. He plants a foot down hard onto the field. The force he applies stops his sideways motion and allows him to accelerate forward. If he can accelerate quickly, he will start to gain speed. Even though the running back may be faster than the defensive players, if the defenders can accelerate more quickly, they’ll tackle him before he can speed away.

SCIENCE STUFF
In the late 1600s, Sir Isaac Newton helped revolutionize science with his three laws of motion to describe the physical world. Newton probably didn’t have football in mind, but there’s an awful lot of physics involved in making a good block. Blocking is as simple as one player trying to stop another player from advancing. To do that, one body has to exert a certain amount of force on another body. Newton’s third law of motion says that when two bodies collide, each body exerts a force on the other that is equal but in the opposite direction. In order for one lineman to be able to push another out of the way, it helps to have a lower center of mass. That just means keeping your body low and driving up into your opponent’s body. This will throw off your opponent’s center of mass and allow you to use more torque (rotational force) to push him in the direction you need him to go.

TLC Book Tours presents... LOVE UNLEASHED by Rebecca Ascher-Walsh

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're joining TLC Book Tours for a tour already in progress starring a work of non-fiction that's ready to steal your heart...and your blanket (or maybe that's just Hamilton...the little scamp).  It features the stories of dogs (and humans!) with backgrounds less than ideal, given a second chance at the lives they should have had, and is the third book of similar nature from this particular author.  All I can say is she certainly had my heartstrings in knots and really, what extraordinary tales!  Ready or not, here comes today's blog tour guest and title in the spotlight....

About the book...
A book for dog lovers everywhere. Celebrating the amazing relationships shared with our four-legged friends, each story recounts the love of dogs and the powerful ways dogs impact our lives.

In this heartwarming collection of stories, readers meet 38 incredible dogs who have gone above and beyond the job description of best friend. Each uplifting story provides an inspiring look at the animals who change our lives. Meet rescue dogs who learn to serve others, working dogs who go beyond the call of duty, and underdogs who surmount extraordinary challenges on the road to finding their forever home. This treasury of man’s best friend features photographs and personal anecdotes from those who have been touched by the selfless love of a beloved pet.

As a fellow pet parent (because really, "owner" is such an outdated term...it's a relationship like any other), I can certainly atttest to the "life-changing power of dogs".  They love with their full selves, from nose to tail, and everything in-between, thinking nothing of expressing their elation for your appearance even if you've only been gone for half a second, or stepping in to protect their family from true and perceived threats (it's okay, Hamilton...the mail person is only bringing more books, not trying to invade your space!).  It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, good looking or homely, hard working or lackadaisical, from the moment that bond is formed, they are in mutual love for better or worse.  If you're having a bad day, so are they...but you best be sure a wet nose will be prodding you until you smile or share your woes.  If you're having a great day, so are they...and more than thrilled to partake in the celebration with a good game of tug, chase, or hey, is that cake?!?!  They are the heartbeats at our feet, from the tall to the small, and bring so much joy into our lives and the lives of those the encounter, it's pretty much beyond measure....so the moment I saw this one coming round on tour, I knew I had to sign up.

💖  My girl Hailey 💖

Now, some of you know I recently had a loss in my personal pack...RIP Hailey, you are beyond loved...and so when this one came up on my calendar as needing to be read and reviewed, I thought I was going to have SUCH a hard time.  I mean honestly, I was tearing up just reading the introduction, but once I got started, once I really got into the stories being shared, I realized, it wasn't about me, or my beloved Pippy (nickname...it happened one day and just stuck), but about all the puppers out there needing a new lease on life and how when given the chance, they excelled beyond measure.  Like Axel the German Shepherd who was saved from euthanasia, then trained by K9s for Warriors to aid in a serviceman's own healing...or Smiley the Golden Retriever who lost his sight due to an infection brought on by irresponsible breeding, only to go on to become a therapy dog, warming the hearts and souls of everyone he meets...or how about Pops the senior Chihuahua rescued from a shelter by One Last Treat and paired with a veteran who also needed a new leash on life.

These dogs and more grace the pages of this WONDERFUL collection of life changing stories for both mankind and dog-kind.  It's the perfect addition to any home library and I'd recommend it for every dog lover out there as it truly captures the way these furry (or not so furry!) friends enrich our lives in every way.
