A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem: THE FINAL GAMBIT by Christopher Healy - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're bringing you the THIRD and FINAL INSTALLMENT of the ever fabulous series entitled A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem by the ever fabulous Christopher Healy from the ever fabulous team at Walden Pond Press!  Did I mention that it's FABULOUS?  Oh, good...because THAT was exactly my aim!  If you've been with us for the first two installments, you're well on your way to brimming over with EXCITEMENT to find out just what DANGER the Peppers and friends are getting themselves into, out of, and around this time around, not to mention so very curious to see if Rector reappears, Molly, her mom, and the MOI get their day, and whether Robot remains the ever loving surprisingly memorable character he was.  If you're NOT familiar with the series, then the last REALLY LONG sentence didn't mean that much memory wise, but I'm sure it sparked your curiosity at the very least.  Am I right?  GREAT because we're not putting the breaks on this runaway train until we're finished, and right now, we're clearing the stage for today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...

A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem, Book 3
by
Christopher Healy
Walden Pond Press

About the book...
The thrilling conclusion to Christopher Healy’s funny, action-packed, acclaimed alt-history adventure!

It is 1884, and Molly and Cassandra Pepper,
Emmett Lee, and Emmett’s long-lost father are sailing back to New York following their death-defying adventure in Antarctica. Having discovered a subterranean world at the South Pole while saving the world from certain doom once again, surely their accomplishments will finally earn them the recognition they deserve.

Unless, of course . . . well, you know by now.

And so do the Peppers and Lees. They’re used to having
their deeds covered up by the government in order to
protect powerful men, and frankly, they’re sick of it. And
when their return to New York doesn’t go the way they’d
planned, they decide that maybe it’s best to go into hiding
and accept that, perhaps, the forces aligned against them are just too great.

As the 1884 presidential election approaches however, our heroes discover a plot against leading candidate Thomas Edison that only they can stop. It’ll be up to them to decide whether to come out of hiding, make the perilous journey to Washington, D.C., and do the right thing one last time. Even if it means risking everything they have left.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a FABULOUS way to say adieu to a series that has taught us so much, entertained us to no end, and both broken and mended our hearts a million times over.  The Peppers and the Lees are remarkable, the ladies of the MOI (Mothers of Invention, for those not already in the know) are inspiring, Rector abysmal, but you have to give him credit for tenacity (and that goes for Agent Clark as well!), Dr. Stinkums who was an unexpected new addition to the group (and a actual genius in doggy form!), and Robot whom one wouldn't think could be but was the heart of them all.  There is so much to love here and only so much space on my post (at least before I bore you to tears because I keep going and going and...well, you get the picture), but I will try to sum it all up.
This adventure will take our motley crew turned family across the globe.  From Antarctica to the high seas, Florida to New York, a great hidden place you wouldn't think of to Washington to another place you wouldn't think of to...well, they globe trot, that's for certain, and in some very creative ways, and always for a good reason which usually ends up with them trying to save the population from the likes of the diabolical mastermind (Rector) with no one in power believing them until it's much too late.  *deep breath*  Anyway...Molly and Emmett take the helm in this one and while yes, they get into trouble, A LOT, they have a plan to follow, and their hearts to guide them...because seriously guys, no one listening to their minds only would undertake the dangers and perils they do!  They could've just said no.  They could've ignored the signs.  They could've said I'd rather live this quiet life and not run from danger, agents, and everyone else since I'm now on the most MOST wanted list, thank you very much....but they didn't.  They CHOSE to do the right thing.  They used their hearts and their minds to figure out the troubles they get into.  They reinvent the wheel, if need be, to get the job done, and they never give up on each other.  Oh yes, times get SERIOUSLY tough, and they may want to put down their burdens and say no more, but they are there for each other and pull each other up when down, never letting the odds win against them.
So to summarize my summary, it was a wild and crazy adventure filled with danger, peril, and heart.  It showed us that anyone can do anything they put their heart and mind to, we CAN in fact choose our family, and just because one doesn't have an actual heart that beats, it doesn't make them any less human.  If you're looking for adventure or even to simply be inspired, this is the series for you!  Oh and don't worry, I won't tell anyone if you're just getting started in it...that just means you get read straight through without any of the wait time for the next adventure.  (Woot woot!)
A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem, Book 2
About the book...
It is 1883—only a few months after Molly Pepper, her mother, Cassandra, and her friend Emmett, saved New York from an attack by the megalomaniacal Ambrose Rector while managing to preserve the reputations of Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison, whose technology was manipulated in Rector’s scheme. Their selfless heroism will finally earn them a place in the Inventors’ Guild, alongside the greatest minds of their generation.
Unless, of course, no one knows that they did any of that. Left with nothing but empty promises and a struggling pickle shop after the government chooses to cover up the crisis, Molly, Cassandra, and Emmett have no idea where to turn—until they learn of a daring expedition to the South Pole, where an meteorite of mysterious power is embedded, and where Emmett’s father, explorer and ship captain Wendell Lee, disappeared years ago.
With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, our heroes commandeer an experimental seacraft to make their play on the pole. But the trip is more treacherous than they realize, and there’s no guarantee that they will return successful—if they even return at all.
So, obviously this is a FANTASTIC addition the the already FABULOUS series from an author we've come to know and love.  I mean, I'm stating the obvious here, right?  Right!  Well, there's something I only just realized, though why it only JUST occurred to me, I'll never quite understand.
If you've read Mr. Healy's previous series, Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, and followed it up with either book in this current set, you may notice something about the characters.  No, not the mix of backgrounds, ethnicity, intelligence, or even arguments made for arguments sake, but rather the fact that this author makes no qualms about writing strong female charactersI mean don't get me wrong, there are male counterparts too, but the limelight shines on the female set in such a way that although in BOTH series, the women haven't really had their moment in the sun, they truly get that from the reader side of things and more.  The MORE comes into play with how the empowering messages carry right off the page.  In the Perilous Journey series, for example, we've Molly and Cassandra Pepper (along with the MOI - Mother of Invention!).  They all have made substantial contributions to the scientific community (whether fictitiously or in real life), and their never-say-die attitude, their can-do spirit, their unbridled confidence that one day they will indeed be invited to join the Guild without hesitation...well it does wonders for this adult reader, so I can only imagine the doors that are opening, the wheels that are turning in the minds of younger readers that maybe just need that extra push to follow their dreams and make them reality!
All in all, a wondrous adventure with characters one would consider family at this point (I know I do!), and lessons to learn that are best done so with friends.  You can't go wrong with this lot, or at least if you do, they've a knack for not only getting into trouble but out as well!
A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem: A DASTARDLY PLOT by Christopher Healy - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!
Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we're pleased as punch to welcome back TWO "old friends" to the blog as Walden Pond Press swings by with a stop along their tour for the latest from author Christopher Healy.  That's right!  The mind that brought us the uber fabulous Hero's Guide series is BACK with a very promising start to a new set you won't want to miss.  Ready or not, here comes today's blog tour guest and book of choice...
A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem, Book 1
by
Christopher Healy
About the book...
It is 1883—the Age of Invention! A time when great men like Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Nicola Tesla, and George Eastman work to turn the country into a mechanical-electrical-industrial marvel: a land of limitless opportunity. And it all happens at the world famous Inventors Guild headquarters in New York City—a place where a great idea, a lot of hard work, and a little bit of luck can find you rubbing elbows with these gods of industry who will usher humanity into the bright promise of the future.
Unless, of course, you’re a woman.
Molly Pepper, daughter of brilliant but unknown inventor Cassandra Pepper, lives with her mother in New York. By day, they make ends meet running a small pickle shop; but by night, they toil and dream of Cassandra shattering the glass ceiling of the Inventors Guild and taking her place among the most famous inventors in America. In an attempt to find a way to exhibit Cassandra’s work at the 1883 World’s Fair, they break into the Inventors Guild—and discover a mysterious and dastardly plot to destroy New York. The evidence points to the involvement of one of the world’s most famous inventors, and now it’s up to Molly, Cassandra, and a shop hand named Emmett Lee to uncover the truth—even if no one will ever know it was they who did it.
Christopher Healy, author of the acclaimed Hero’s Guide series, returns with the first book in a rip-roaring adventure about the inventors history remembers—and more than a few that it’s forgotten.
Woo hoo!  Now that's what I call an adventure!
If you've read Mr. Healy's previous works, you'll know he isn't afraid of letting the ladies take the lead, loves peppering the story with unexpected humorous moments and dialogue, and always brings the action.  So what should you expect this time around? Same...and then some!
It's hard not to like the Pepper's, both Molly and Cassandra, though maybe a bit more of Molly.  They've had to survive some hard knocks in life from the passing of her father to the ruination of their business to the scraping through mud of the family name, but as their family saying goes...Peppers never give up!  Something to remember when things are looking severely down and all seems lost....just sayin'.  I really loved Molly's spunky nature, relative quick thinking on her feet, and her ability to charm an audience when need arises.  Her devotion to her mother is heartbreaking in its strength, but it's certainly not one-sided, which brings us to Pepper number two.
Cassandra Pepper is Molly's mom, and while limited in street smarts, she's a whip at anything with gears, steam power, or otherwise inventor-ish.  Seriously, some of the gadgets and gizmos she created are astounding and I agree with her...the public deserves to know her name...as well as the rest of the female inventors out there lurking in the shadows just waiting for their moment to shine...and shine they will!  The devotion she shows to Molly is heartwarming, and the love they have for their new family of two is present in all they do.  Even when they are exasperated with each other, you can still see how much they care, and when things turn from bad to worse, the first thing on the other's mind is seeing them safely home again.  We should all be so lucky to have family so dear...or even a friend, which brings us to our new chosen family member of sorts.
Emmett Lee never intended to leave behind the new life he was forging.  His path was set after so much upheavel and my heart hurt for him, but sometimes fate has a different life for us in mind, and thus begins his adventure of a lifetime.  He'll rise from the shadows to leave his own footprints in the sand, telling the world that LEE WAS HERE and don't you forget it!  He's whip smart at all the mechanics of inventing and while suffering from his own losses in life, he'll find a new family to call his own because it's not all about blood relations, but about who we're willing to let into our hearts, and throw ourselves out a window with.  Am I right?  😉
In the end, we have a good bit of history with a large helping of dastardly deeds and twisty turns to spin it all together into one fabulous adventure!  Thoroughly enjoyed this installment and I can't wait for the next...but in the mean time, it's YOUR TURN!  Pick up a copy today and let me know what you think...or you know, you can always WIN one... (keep reading!)
