Duke in Shining Armor
Damsel in Distress series
by
Hayleigh Mills

About the book...
Far from a helpless maiden, Lady Catherine Davenport had her wits and a trusty derringer pistol at her disposal. As she journeyed to Switzerland to attend school, she did not plan to play the damsel in distress. Yet, even the most independent lady could use a bit of unexpected assistance when faced with the threat of highwaymen. Enter Lord James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke, a man of wealth often maligned as a rogue or a rake. The truth, however, lay far from these labels - he was an industrious man of leisure, delighting in worldly pleasures as any man of his station might. Marriage was the last thing on his agenda until he crossed paths with the fiercely independent and intellectual Lady Davenport. He becomes her savior in a turn of fate, offering her protection under the most extraordinary circumstances. He was able to keep Catherine safe from the highwaymen, but the real question remains: could he protect her from the danger he himself posed?

She was surprised to see the duke walking into the bedchamber so early in the afternoon. The door remained open, and the maid hovered there. Deep inside, where she held all her secretive improper thoughts, Catherine wished they were alone without a chaperone. Perhaps then she would learn even more hidden complexities about the duke. And she so wanted to know everything. “Good afternoon, Catherine. Yesterday you mentioned needing some fresh air, and I have considered this. The physician believes you are healing well so a short visit outside is in order.” Catherine’s face lit up with a smile. She longed to feel the sun caress her skin and to breathe dew kissed air. She was pleased to learn that James would indulge her. “I have had cook prepare us a hamper, and we shall have a picnic in the garden.” “I am most grateful, James.” A ghost of a smile touched his mouth, and he briefly dipped his head. “Well, that is settled, and everything is prepared. Now, we must have regard for the physician’s instructions. You cannot stand on your feet, so I shall lift you, and take you there. Shall we?” Lift her? There gazes collided and suddenly she knew without any doubt that the duke’s heart was pounding as harshly and loudly as hers. There was something in those hazel eyes, a guarded awareness yet a delight. As if he had longed to hold her closer. “Yes,” Catherine replied in a soft murmur, releasing the edges of the sheets that she’d gripped. James padded over and scooped her effortlessly from the bed. She was so close to his face that her eyes were suddenly drawn to his lips before she quickly averted her gaze. She placed one arm around his neck and the other on his shoulder. Her heart jerked and Catherine marveled at the feel of his muscles beneath her fingertips. It was rather uncanny, but she had a sense that … that she belonged right here in his arms. They felt powerful, and protective. She knew no harm would befall her when he held her. Oh, Catherine, she silently scolded herself, do not be silly and fanciful!

☆☆ QUICKIE REVIEW ☆☆

Okay, okay, I know... this post is getting PRETTY long, but sometimes you just have A LOT to share! I was scheduled for a spotlight, but I had a chance to indulge in the book, so voila! A quickie review to get your interest kickstarted even more!

Catherine and James...

She's stubborn, speaks her mind, wants a partner not a master, but will do her duty for her family that she holds dear. He's stubborn, speaks his mind, wants a partner not a submissive beauty, but will do his duty to uphold his family name. From the little we know about each of them, they are a perfect match, if only they'd be honest enough with each other to recognize it, AND hopefully before it burns them through! 🔥 They have ups and downs, hot nights and misunderstandings that lead to more than a cold shoulder 🥶, but eventually, all roads lead to... well, potential scandal, then possibly ruin, but eventually.... love ❤️.

Historical Romance fans, give it a go, and see what you think!

Copyright 2021 Evelyn Sola

Just as I approach the corner, I’m hit on the shoulder by another body. I’m pushed to the wall, and the mountain of books in my hands crashes to the floor. The red folder holding my English term paper lands on top of the heap.
“Watch where you’re going!” the person who bumped says.
She doesn’t have the decency to stop, but by the sound of her giggles, I know who it is. And there’s no way the school’s most popular senior would give me the time of day. I sigh and drop to the floor to pick up my things. My heart starts to beat erratically because if there’s one thing I know—wherever Candace is, he’s never too far behind.
I’m proven right. A pair of black boots enters my line of vision. Cooper Stevens. Those are his boots. He was wearing them the very first time I saw him, and I remember wanting to be swallowed up by the ground. The only thing that saved me from total embarrassment was the fact that I know someone like him would never notice someone like me.
I hold my breath while he approaches and quickly turn to my books. Please leave. Please leave. Please leave. I busy myself arranging my books. I won’t stand up until he walks past me. Only he doesn’t. He drops down to my level and grabs my red folder. Instead of handing it to me, he opens it and starts to look through the pages.
I finally find the courage to look at him, and our eyes lock. For the first time ever, I notice the hazel flecks around his brown eyes. I look away and drop my head, and because this is the day from hell, my glasses slide off my face and land on the floor.
We reach for them at the same time, and his large hand ends up covering mine. I let out a small sound, and I say a silent prayer that he didn’t hear it. I note the contrast of our skin tones, his white hand covering my brown one before I pull mine away. He lifts my glasses and brings them to my face. I’m as still as a statue while I look down at the linoleum floor. He moves closer and slides the glasses back onto my face. I take a deep breath and bask in the smell of his leather jacket mixed with his fruity shampoo.
When he gets the glasses on my face, he moves his hands behind my ears to make sure they are secure.
“You okay?” he asks. He lifts my chin and forces me to look at him.
Like a deer in headlights, all I can do is stare.
“Be careful next time, Laces,” he whispers.
I lick my dry lips. “Um, my name is—” The words get locked in my throat. I grab my books and finally stand up. He stands right along with me. When we’re both upright, he takes a step closer.
“Your name is what?” he asks. He hands me my folder, and when I take it from him, his fingers touch mine.
“Um, my name is—” I clear my throat and try again. The entire time he stares at me with an expression I can’t interpret. “My name isn’t, um—” I never get a chance to finish my sentence.
“Cooper!” Candace yells in the hallway. She runs over to us and grabs the sleeve of his leather jacket. “Come on! What are you still doing here with her?” She points at me without bothering to look in my direction. “Let’s go. You did your good deed of the day. Maybe you should tell her to run a flat iron through that hair.” The entire time he was being dragged away, his head was turned in my direction, until they turned the corner and he disappeared.

Here we have the good, the bad, and the ugly.

In the good category, most definitely Laci, her little girl, and her aunt, as well as Cooper and his rescue dog.  Laci was trying so hard to provide the type of life her daughter deserved.  Despite how she came into this world and to whom, she wanted her to have all the love, all the opportunities, all the freedoms and support that she could offer...all the things she never received herself, growing up.  I couldn't help but root for her, all the way through the story, and the ending, both the explosive scene and the epilogue, were spot on for the tale.  Moving forward, Laci's aunt was an absolute gem.  Despite have a horrendous mother, more on that in another category, she had an ally, a friend, and a stand in mother in her.  She wouldn't take crap from anyone, and she gave love like it had no boundaries.  Same can be said for Sam's rescue dog...and even Sam, himself.  The pupper is a sweetheart, and I love that the breed chosen is one that some can be frightened of, but the gentle side if shown here.  As for Sam, he's a sight for sore eyes, and a potential salve for a wounded heart, but if he wants to win the prize, he's gonna have to move slow, and let Laces lead the way.

In the bad category, Laci's deceased husband, and all those people that looked over her in high school...but mostly Brian.  Yeah, it's best to let the dead rest, but I can't help but hope this guy would have eternity restless.  The harm he caused emotionally and spiritually to Laci was obnoxious.  The things he said it her, blamed her for, and how he treated her...well, it may not have been physical abuse, but it was the next worst thing.  Stuff like that can really get under your skin, and for Laci, it does...it takes her unexpectedly getting out from under him, and some really strong, and patient people to help her heart heal, and give herself permission to love again.

In the ugly category, we've got Laci's enemy since school days...Laci...and her very own mother, if you can believe it.  The former was a pretty girl on the outside that turned into a head turning woman, but what was on the inside was dark as tar, and three times as nasty.  She was overly concerned with her looks, and her weight, so much so that she couldn't accept others as they were simply because she couldn't accept herself.  Her lashing out when she wasn't getting her way was childlike and pretty easy to spot.  Her inability to walk away when she's been practically pushed, just made her immaturity shine brighter.  As for the latter, Laci's mom, you won't be able to believe the nerve of this woman.  She basically used her daughter for whatever was convenient at the time, just so she could hook her next man.  She didn't have enough self esteem to be on her own, and gave her self worth away to whatever Tom, George, or Harry happened into her life.  THEN, when things are starting to look up, she has a nasty habit of turning up...and you can imagine the fireworks that would ensue.

All in all, memorable for many reasons with a story that will echo the "mean girl" tales many have from their own lives...but if you take a page from Laci, you'll know that the best way to win, the best way to come out on top of the naysayers, is to keep doing you, and don't let anyone steal your light.  Note for readers, there is a fair mention of Laci's weight being a bit over that of your standard twigs, and a good amount of spicy talk and/or scenes.  Sometimes those can be tipping points of interest, but if not, at the very least, it's good to know going in.

I should have known the moment I saw her that this was no coincidence. A hot crazy lady randomly appears in my house? Not f*cking likely. This has Mom's fingerprints all over it, and the keys clutched in the blonde’s hand are the nail in her coffin. I sigh. The woman is eyeing me like I'm a rabid dog about to strike. Or at least, that’s how she’s looking at me now. I caught the flash of heat in her gaze when my towel dropped a moment ago.
Groaning again, I lean against the doorframe and wonder what I did to deserve this. I've spent a long day completing work on a brick fence. My back aches, and all I want is to crack open a beer and watch hockey.
"So?" The blonde clasps her hands together, fidgeting. She's pretty, if a bit skittish. Her moss-green eyes dart around the kitchen, returning to me every few seconds as though she's wary of taking her attention off me for too long. "What's going on?"
I nod toward the keys in her hand. "Those belong to my mother. She owns the house next door, which is the one you actually rented."
"Oh." Her slim shoulders slump in relief, and her curls bounce. "Thank goodness for that. It's all a big misunderstanding."
I laugh dryly. "It’s no such thing."
A furrow forms between her brows. "What do you mean? Surely she just gave me the wrong set of keys."
"If only."
She seems baffled by my cryptic comment, and I sigh, already able to tell that she's the type who's curious enough to stick around until I explain everything.
"Mom intentionally sent you here," I say, figuring I may as well get the awkwardness out of the way. I'm sure it's not the only time she'll be subject to Mom's match-making machinations if she plans to live next door. She has a wholesome, sweet vibe that Mom will just eat up.
Yeah, I'm going to be dodging this woman for the foreseeable future.
"She hoped we'd run into each other, and that I'd be smitten with you. She set us up."
"Oh." This time, there's a whole other level of meaning to the word. But then she cocks her head, and the furrow deepens. "I wouldn't have thought you needed to be set up." Her gaze rakes over me once again, and I can't help but puff out my chest. It's been a long time since anyone looked at me with such blatant appreciation, and I can tell she doesn't even realize she's doing it, or else she'd be mortified.
"I don't," I reply firmly, and her eyes snap up to mine. A delicate, pink flush journeys down her neck. Damn, I need to get rid of her before I actually do start to find her charming. "Here. I'll get you my key for the place next door, and you can give me that one." I nod at the key in her hand. She drops it on the counter.
"I'm so sorry about this." She wrings her hands, looking awkward as f*ck. "I didn't mean to just walk into your house and make myself at home."
"I know you didn't," I assure her. "I'm going to come closer now, is that okay?"
She nods, but her eyes remain on me as I enter the kitchen and head for the key hook by the fridge. I remove the one for the rental and replace it with the key she left on the counter, then offer her the one she actually needs. Our fingers brush as she takes it, and something jolts in my chest. Shaking it off, I snatch my hand away and check that the towel is still secure. The last thing I need is to give her another peep show.
"That key will open the front door of the house next door. Hold onto it for now, and I'll get Mom to drop by with the proper key tomorrow."
"I can do that." She smiles, and I resist the urge to fall back a step, because it lights up her entire face, elevating her from pretty to gut-wrenchingly beautiful. "I don't want to put you out any more than you already are."
"Don't worry about it." Despite my frustration, I find my lips curving. "It's not you I'm angry at."
Her expression softens. "Please don't be too mad with Nadine. She seems like such a nice person, and I'm sure she only wants to make you happy."
Damn, she has a point. But whether her intentions are good or not, it’s going to stop me from giving Mom a piece of my mind. She needs to know it's not all right to hand out my house key to total strangers just because she wants grandbabies.

Every book lover, enjoys reading a story where the main character is a bookworm themselves, and in this case, a writer too!  There's something great about identifying with them, and sharing an interest, that makes you step into their world that much more.

Felicity is the bookworm/writer, and Wyatt is the unexpected, but certainly not unwanted, love interest.  He's the broody town guy that's had his heart smashed to smithereens, and pretty much given up on love...with good reason too, considering the back story, but that's for him to share in time.  All we have from the start is our gal Felicity trying to make nice with the neighbor after that charged meet-cute scene you read a moment ago.  The groundwork for sparks is there, but they've both been hurt and are harboring bad tendencies that neither wish to own up to, making any sort of future, whether short or long term, seem out of reach...almost.  Good thing meddling family members know just how to rig the odds in the potential couples favor so as to keep pushing them together...and making it seem like it just happened that way.  Sneaky, but in a good way, and trust me, they're SO going to need it with their own self-doubt hanging around, past hurts refusing to budge, and former flames unaccepting of their chosen fate thanks to the choices they made.  Yes, I'm talking about YOU, Dawn.

By book's end, you'll be in love with the town, and hoping against hope that these two can pull it together before it's too late.  You'll be on the edge of your seat straight til the end, and I must say, it didn't end exactly as I imagined, but it made sense for these two souls.

But when Kasey stumbles onto a new, profitable fashion venture, will she leave Asher behind for the bright lights of the big city once more? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's a classic boy met best friend's older sister, harbored a HUGE crush for years while she barely new he existed...at least, until ten plus years later when BOTH their worlds are going through some changes, and the chance they never thought they would have, just might come to pass.  Unless history repeats itself and dreams get in the way.  But just like life changes, SO CAN DREAMS...it all depends on the dreamer, and sometimes those changes can be remarkably sweeter.

I liked the faster pace of this novel, as it never really let you sit and ponder just what was going to happen while keeping you in suspense through pages and pages of filler.  Yes, there is story.  Yes, there are complications.  Yes, there are a million what-ifs to consider, maybes to contend with, and potential heartaches just waiting in the wings, but it all comes together fairly seamlessly, allowing us to enjoy the ride as it unfolds.  Kasey was a lost soul, down on her luck, and with more than a bruised ego.  She needed someone to listen, someone to show her kindness, someone to remind her that failure isn't when you don't succeed at something you've tried, but rather never having the guts to give it a go in the first place.  Asher was that someone.  Asher was also that someone that needed to hear that same message, which of course prompts him to reconsider his own life path, and makes more unexpected waves, but in the end, the biggest waves he surfs with ease, as he takes his life from standstill to the starting line.

In the end, it was a great Contemporary Romance with a believable storyline, great messages...and a little spice.  If you're a fan of the author, you won't be disappointed.  If this is your first time hearing about her work, you'll enjoy the introduction!

“I know it’s a lot to take in, Seth. You can contact me any time if you’ve got any questions.”

Numb, I swallowed hard and nodded. Then, realizing that Carol from Child Protective Services couldn’t see me, I found my voice. “Sure, of course I will. Thank you.”

“I’ll be in touch again so we can finalize everything.”

I almost nodded again. “Thank you. Talk soon.”

The line went dead.

It had been a Thursday just like any other.

Fixing cars, making plans for the weekend, chatting shit with Maddox.

Until the call that spun everything off its axis, turned the world upside down, and any other cliché you’d care to toss in for good measure.

My vision swam, legs trembling as I walked out of the office and back into the main part of the garage and over to the car I’d been working on. I grabbed the wrench to pick up where I’d left off, but it tumbled out of my grip clattering on the concrete floor with an almighty crash.

“Seth? You okay, buddy?” Maddox Riley called from the other side of the garage.

I tried to dislodge the huge lump in my throat, anything but okay. “Yeah, all good,” I managed.

“Shit, you look as if you’ve seen a ghost. You’ve gone really pale.”

Ha, she was haunting me already. I raked a hand through my hair. If I didn’t tell Maddox what was going on, he’d find out soon enough. I had to hope he was as flexible a landlord as he was a boss.

“You got a minute? There’s something you should know.”

He glanced up from the engine he’d been looking over. “Sure, gimme a sec.”

I headed towards the open door, inhaling a lungful of fresh air.

After a couple of minutes, Maddox joined me. “What’s up? Who was on the phone?”

“Child Protective Services needed to talk to me about Noah.”

Noah was my thirteen-year-old son: the result of an illicit relationship when I was sixteen with a cheerleader two years older than me.

“Is he okay?”

Slowly, I nodded.

He was fine.

He hadn’t been in the truck with his mother, her boyfriend, and her parents. He’d been hanging out with one of his buddies playing video games. For once, I thanked God for Noah’s Fortnite obsession.

“Then why did CPS need to talk to you?” Maddox rubbed at an oil mark on his wrist, eyes focused on trying to remove it.

“There was a car accident.” The lump grew even larger, making it increasingly difficult for me to get the words out. “Hannah, her mom and dad, her boyfriend—” My voice cracked. “Didn’t make it out. They’re gone.” Saying it out loud took some of the burden off of me, and I could at least share it with Maddox.

His eyes grew wide, staring silently at me.

Disbelief, confusion, anger, grief.

Without another word, he pushed me out of the way and pulled on the chains to shut the doors to the garage.

“We’re closing,” he stated. “I can’t let you go through this on your own.”

Once Maddox had made a few calls to let customers know about the unexpected early finish, we headed upstairs to the tiny apartment above the garage. After I’d come out of jail—a six-month stint for petty theft—Maddox had been my lifeline. He’d offered me a job through an offenders’ rehabilitation program, which had come with the apartment. Its one caveat was I could never be late for work.

Taking charge, Maddox got two bottles of beer out of the refrigerator, popped the caps, and handed one to me. We went over to the sofa and sat down at each end.

“Have you spoken to Noah?”

I shook my head, gulping down the beer. “Not yet.”

“What’s going to happen to him?”

I chewed on my lips, fingernails scratching at the label on the beer bottle. “I’m his biological father and the only living relative he has. I have to step up. There isn’t anyone else.”

This is the story of a young teen whose world gets turned upside down, only to discover that this new perspective, given time and patience, may not be better, but could be good enough.  Funny thing is, that description could apply to both the current teen in question, Noah, and his father, Seth.
Once upon a time, Seth fathered a child.  Though not completely out of the norm, he and she were rather young at the time, and while he wanted to step up, her family decided she should step out.  The thing about small towns though...everyone is in everyone else's business and decides the truth for themselves.  Same goes here, and Seth became the bad guy...until he fell in with the bad guys and took the fall.  Time served later, and his lesson learned, he's trying to rebuild his life...and the sudden appearance of his son after some time, while not unwelcome, is certainly not something he was prepared for.  Noah is taking things in stride as best he can.  After losing his closest family members and being uprooted from the home and friends he knew, any acting out would be acceptable to a certain degree.  With the help of the new guidance counselor, and a dad that's really trying, he has a support system already built in...even when he does something completely off the rails.  Question though...what about SETH'S support system?  Who's there for him?  Oh so many, if only he'll let them...
This is another short(ish) story that doesn't really detail out every situation or backstory, but it does so enough the it's enjoyable, relatable, and will have you glued to the epage.  I accepted Seth for what he was, though I admit to a short bout of what-the-heck-is-wrong-with-you when certain events evoke unexpected consequences.  He was trying, mostly hard, and he's human, so yeah...hat's off or wrenches up.  I really felt Ainsley's story though.  Trying to get her feet beneath her again, and strike out on her own.  She hit several potholes along the way, but kept trying, kept pushing, and ended up with a stable job, good friends, and a chance to make a forever with an unexpected someone that just might be her perfect match.
So, if you're looking for a great add to your summer reading list, or to wile away a lazy afternoon, get yourself into a bit of trouble with this great read!

About the author...

Julie Archer is the author of contemporary romance featuring rock stars, small towns, a healthy dose of angst, some steamy times and always a happy ever after!

When not writing, she can usually be found binge watching teen drama series on Netflix, or supporting Spurs (the English Premier League football team, not the American basketball team!) from my armchair, and running around after her two feline children, Corey and Elsa.

Real angst. Real romance.

About the book...

Firefighter Marshall Knight is more than happy living the single life and working toward his next promotion with the fire department until his world is flipped upside down when he finds out that he has a child. Abandoned by his own mother as a small boy, he’s determined to do the right thing and take care of his son, stepping right into the role of a single father and leaving no time for things like a relationship and romance.

One trip to the ER with his baby boy changes all that and he finds himself instantly enamoured with Kaitlynn - the compassionate nurse who’s been assigned to them.

Kaitlynn Bennett made herself a vow a long time ago to never date a firefighter. Between her father’s job as Fire Captain and losing her own mother in a fire when she was twelve, she knows all too well the heartache that comes along with all of it.

Which is exactly why she had no clue that the sexy single dad in the ER was actually a firefighter. Their attraction is undeniable and with a little nudge from a friend the two find themselves in an inferno of their own. That is, until Kaitlynn discovers he’s a firefighter and Marshall realizes that Kaitlynn is his Captain’s daughter. It’s the perfect excuse for both of them to give in to their own insecurities and put plenty of distance in their already complex relationship.

But when a fire strikes and they both end up in harm's way, will they finally realize that building a life together is far better than a lifetime apart?

“Oh my god.”

Her knees buckle, but Captain is close enough to keep her from hitting the floor.

“Please let me hold you. I can’t stand seeing you like this.”

She shakes her head and presses herself closer to her father.

“I can’t. I... I need…” She’s damn near hyperventilating. Ignoring my pain, I sit up and swing my legs over the side of the bed, ready to go to her, but she stops me. “I need to sit down for a minute. Please.”

My eyes meet Captain’s, and he nods again, silently telling me to stay put. I fucking hate it, but I listen. He leads Kaitlynn to the nearest chair while I settle back onto the uncomfortable hospital bed.

I watch as Captain squats down next to her. He wraps an arm around her back and murmurs quietly in her ear. I don’t know what he’s saying to her, but I can see it’s working. She’s starting to calm down, but it pisses me off that I’m not the one comforting her.

“Now,” Captain says sternly, “which one of you wants to tell me how long you’ve been together?”

I look to Kaitlynn, not wanting to break my promise to her, even though there’s no longer a secret to keep.

“Since a few days after we had that late-night conversation on the phone,” she admits.

I expected him to be angry when he learned the truth, when he found out we were both lying to him. He’s not angry. He’s disappointed, and honestly, I think that’s worse. I’d rather deal with his anger.

“Did you have any plans to tell me?” he asks, but the question is directed at me.

“Yes, sir. When Kaitlynn was comfortable with me sharing our relationship.”

“When Kaitlynn was comfortable?”

“Yes, Dad. I asked Marshall not to tell you.”

He pins me with a cold stare. “I thought you had more respect for me than that.”

My mouth opens and closes repeatedly, but no sound comes out.

“Don’t get mad at him. It’s my fault.”

“He still should have told me.”

It’s Kaitlynn’s turn to be offended. She cocks her eyebrow and pins her father with the same glare he just gave me. “You’re saying if you made a promise to me, you would turn right around and break it?”

“Of course not!” he sputters.

“Then why would Marshall?”

Properly chastised, Captain drops into the other chair and leans forward on his elbows. “I wish one of you would have been honest with me. I don’t like being kept in the dark.”

“I love you, Dad, but you and I are only recently mending the cracks in our relationship. I wasn’t ready for you to know.”

He hangs his head and sighs before lifting it to look at his daughter.

“You’re right, Kaitlynn. I have to earn back the privilege of knowing everything about your life. I’m sorry for the way I reacted.”

She leans in and hugs him, and almost instantly, the air in the room feels less stifling. Captain doesn’t offer me an apology, nor do I expect him to. Despite the promise I made Kaitlynn, I was never comfortable with keeping our relationship from him. He has the right to be angry with me. He deserves better from me.

A nurse pops in my room to check my vitals and leaves almost as quickly as she appeared. Captain excuses himself to get something to drink, disappearing when we both decline his offer to get us one as well.

“Can I hold you now?”

It’s all I’ve wanted from the moment she rushed into the room, but the expression on her face tells me I’m not going to get what I want.

She stands, wrapping her arms around herself. She looks at me again, but whatever I saw in her expression before is gone, replaced with steely resolve.

“I think I’m going to head home. It’s been an emotional day... I... I think I need some time.”

I can’t say I’m not disappointed, but I understand. This has to be hard on her.

“Okay, beautiful. Will I see you in the morning before I’m discharged? They’re only keeping me for observation, so I’ll be sprung first thing tomorrow.”

She chews her bottom lip, then shakes her head.

“I don’t think so, Marshall.”

Her tone makes my blood run cold.

Marshall and Kaitlynn.
Two hearts that weren't looking for love...
...but Cupid found them anyway...
...with a BIG FLAMING ARROW...
...and a bundle to boot!

Okay, so it doesn't sound like the recipe for a true romance, but THIS BOOK ROCKED!  Marshall was a man's man, but not a complete butt.  Despite his natural bachelor ways, he knew how to treat a woman, and his friends, while still having the respect of his Captain come morning.  One night out with the guys and his one-night-stands catch up with him in a BIG way...or rather a little way that's recently made his way into the world.  That's right...a baby...and the circumstances of his birth, as well as his reunion with the man that might be his father, are heartbreaking to say the least...but man, you've got to respect Marshall for how he's so prepared to step in!  I mean there's none of this frantic see-sawing or bowing out even though the option was given.  NO, if he's his son, he won't see him with anyone but himself, and he'll handle it from there.  *melt*  A frantic run to the ER introduces the intended target of dear old Cupid...

Kaitlynn just happened to be working in the ER the night of Marshall's "midnight run", and yes she's taken aback by his good lucks, and obvious love for AJ (the little bundle!), she's also spun round by the fact that he doesn't seem to notice or mind at the very least the scars she carries from her past.  Those scars are both physical and emotional, running much deeper than you'd ever imagine, but for someone to look past those and see who she is...is not the norm.  Of course, little AJ plays a big part in getting her attention because he's' beyond adorable and she's a NICU nurse, so it's her natural territory.  One things leads to another and...they spend time together outside the hospital.

What? You thought something was going to happen right there?  Mind out of the gutter because while there's plenty of heat, the fire is very much controlled...meaning if you're not looking for full page disclosure, you're in the right book.  The story deals with their pasts, and their potential future, but the road to that chance at happiness is paved in anything but an easy ride.  No, there will be bumps, there will be hiccups, there will be downright heartbreaking moments, and times when it looks more than bleak, but if you hold on, stay strong, keep your fingers crossed, and let Derrick and AJ work their magic, things may just come up roses in the end.

In the end, I loved the characters, the meet cute, the back stories, and the future that wasn't promised.  There was so much to work through, but so much to look forward to that I was glued to the epages as I continued moving deeper into the story.  It's not quite a novella, not exactly a short story, and the style makes the pages burn quicker as it's more what I get when I skim a book...the main story without all the fleshed details...but it works, and I've no regrets having picked it up in the least.
