We started the day with a spooky tale (a good fit considering Halloween is tomorrow) and now we're bringing things back to another "horror-ific" word for some readers....CHICK LIT.  AAaaaaah!  Just kidding.  I love the genre despite the less than friendly welcome it receives at times and today's title is perfectly fit to show the world that you can't keep a good writer down which leads me to proclaim....

All that popular Chick-Lit author Mercury Lauren wants is to have one of her books reviewed by the New York Times Book Review - just one - and she'll do almost anything to get it. In this contemporary romantic comedy, with a nod toward Pride and Prejudice she crosses swords and hearts with the Editor-in-Chief of the NYTBR in a madcap adventure that takes her from her home in Westport to a yoga retreat to a golf course in Florida. Will she get what she wants and will she finally be happy if she does? Only one thing's for certain: nothing will stop her from Pursuing the Times.

First off, love the title actually functioning within the story; too often to we see a case of mismatch where they go together like oil and water.  Second...hello?  Did you read the synopsis?  Did you click to read the excerpt?  Trust me, I did and it deals with the book world as we know it, authorial talent waiting to be discovered, the hard climb to the top, and the lengths it apparently takes to get an invite to the National Book Awards ceremony.  Umm, yeah....Mercury?  Good thing you were talking to her over the phone because you might have had some face to save, or dirt to wipe off your nose.  (LOL.)  I must say, Mercury's characters is easy to know...and see yourself in just a smidge (~whistles~).  

It takes a fast paced and satirical look at the world of Chick-lit, the writers that inhabit it, and the potential not-so-friendly distance between them and their authorial counterparts.  Some look down on the genre, automatically saying "nay" to a title as soon as they hear that "tell-tale" genre (like Frank)...but you know what?  THEY ARE MISSING OUT...as I can only presume the potential readers/reviewers of Mercury's work are in the book; including the New York Times Book Review (take that Frank!).  Crossing my fingers she gets a chance to live out her story...or at least dreams a new dream.

Final thoughts...what a tease!

With the excerpt as fun filled and snarky as it is, one can only guess what's in store as we read further...but my money's on a fun time indeed with many cases of "foot-in-mouth" disease, eraser logo or not.  (Inside joke...read the excerpt, you'll see.) I'll be checking this one out further next year (darn...I have to wait to find out what the deal is with the RICE acronym!) but if you're looking for your next read of the moment, feel free to check this title out on Amazon as it's available for download now.

Sounds dark and creepy, right?  Well, sorta.  Curious is more how I would describe it.  If one continues to read the excerpt, which I of course did, you discover that his experiment is about to have the plug pulled on it, ending all the work he's done....and all the lives he's created, for better or worse.  There's one person yet to be added to the mix that comes as a shocker (yes, I know...a shock even at this early stage in the game but it's pretty interesting!) and should definitely add some moral dilemmas if not hope to escape the end that seems to be intent on wiping them out....

Final thoughts...what a tease!

The novel is labeled as YA cyberpunk....a sub genre I'm not certain I've actually read before, but this one may change all that....and suggested for fans of Ender's Game, Neuromancer, and The Hunger Games....

Have I read any of those?  Nope....not even the last one and still somehow this one is sticking with me.  Go figure.  Adding to the wish list for now but be sure to stay tuned to the blogosphere for more news on the upcoming tour!  There's LOTS of fun to be had...trust me...I've read all about it.  ^_^

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the site that aims to feed your need to read every day of the week.  It's Groundhog Day!  Any guesses as to whether the little furry weather predictors will see their shadows today?  I don't know about you, but I'm hoping we get a few more weeks of winter.  Spring/Summer is fine and all...but I LOVE the cool weather (and live in FL, go figure...).  Anywho, today's post might be giving you a little whiplash ala Groundhog Day (the movie) style with the author's work featured...but look again.  It's not the SAME person as last week...they just happen to be connected to them.  How?  Marriage of course...and you gotta love author couples that support each other's projects equally...especially when they are this good! The Stuttering Tattoo

Opening with a daydream typical of most teenage boys....*ahem* _shakes head_...we meet Steven, Steven Bishop. No, that's not the stutter referred to in the title, but a means to get his attention from the clouds of fantasy land to math class. Moving along, our main character isn't the star of his class or captain of the football team, nor does he talk much (a way of avoiding ridicule for his speech impediment....kids - heck, people - can be so mean!)....which leaves him in a clique all by his lonesome. At least until Rebecca Moore walks in...

New student with apparent devil-may-care attitude, Becky (as she advises the class she prefers to be called) is not your average "beauty"...she's a rebel with a penchant for collecting collateral damage. Seriously...first day of school and we're talking a tire slashing!?! I'd recommend steering clear of her to our friend here....but I believe he is too enchanted by her "charms" to listen to reason. *reads more of sample* Yep, definitely done for. But there's more here than first meets the eye....and saying that after reading an excerpt only is a fairly big deal.

It seems there is some back story of a reason for Steve's downward spiral relating to his mother's departure....not death, but something as shocking in a sense that threw their family dynamics out of whack. Speaking of shocking, the turn of events by sample's end? Whew!

 

 

Final thoughts...what a tease!

The reference to Steve looking like Johnny Depp to which he replies "that old?" (okay, THAT makes ME feel old...) and the hot-and-potentially-heavy make out scene turned grotesque ala Saw (think body parts...and I'm not talking still attached to a living, breathing body...*-*), though at different ends of the spectrum, work well.  Another book from a male perspective (something to note for those seeking suggestions for reluctant boy/teen readers) that seems to have a lot of potential, if I do say so myself.  I wouldn't be too surprised if this one ends up on my TBR shelf soon.

The Bro-Magnet

And through it all, he's pretending to have no interest in sports, which Helen claims to abhor. As things heat up with Helen, the questions arise: Will Johnny finally get the girl? And, if he's successful in that pursuit, who will he be now that he's no longer really himself? THE BRO-MAGNET is a rollicking comedic novel about what one man is willing to give up for the sake of love.

Odd choice for a female reader?

Not really.

Consider it the male equivalent to a beloved chick-lit/chick flick favorite, Bridget Jones Diary.  After reading the sample (30+ pages!), the first thought that popped into my head is....wow, so THIS is what happened to Bridget Jones' brother...if she had one!  No really!  It's as coarse and as brash as the works mentioned; full of that down trodden and yet persevering spirit we love.  It's the other side of the proverbial coin in the world of relationships or lack thereof....and an interesting perspective to view things through (did I mention funny?  Yep...definitely funny!).

Final thoughts...what a tease!

Will it make it into my reading rotation?  Only time will tell....but if the preview is any indication, this should certainly be one to watch for.  Curious to find out more?  Check out the extended sample on Amazon...but be warned teeny readers, I'm recommending this one for older teens through adults only.

Okay, first off...the town's name is Secret.  No, not like the books by Pseudonymous Bosch....but actually Secret!  Clue #1 that there is a mystery afoot.  I mean really, how can a town NAMED Secret not HAVE secrets, you know?  Anywho....obvious clue #2...the synopsis alludes to Katelyn being run out of town, and the extended sample I read online (3 chapters....a goodly amount to get your interest piqued) adds to the back story that it was at the tender age of 17.  A bit early to be spreading your wings permanently, so you can't help but wonder what sparked her flight. 

Then we have Nick Juno, the former boy now man (and mayor no less!) who obviously had something to do with said secret (the actual secret, not the town...although he did and still does live there....stay with me ^_^) and in my opinion still holds a flame of interest in fair Katelyn despite the intents of others.  Who?  Well, let's just say that his son's (cute little boy too...there's this incident at school that leads to a father son talk about lying that will totally make you smile) nanny wouldn't bat an eyelash at any request from her employer...though she does bat her lashes AT him quite often.

Final thoughts...what a tease!

Though not my usual forte genre wise, after reading the 3 chapter preview, I'm hooked!  Fingers crossed that my first impressions pan out, and if they do, I just might have to check out another title or two from the author's bibliography.  As I shan't be reviewing this title for a few more months, I thought I'd give you guys a taste of it today and if you're taste buds are ready for a bit more, definitely check out the preview I linked to above for a 3 chapter jaunt into the story.  Good stuff if I do say so myself.  ^_^

I was lucky enough to partake in a recent 'First Look' event for a new children's title coming this September to a bookshelf near you.  It's a fantasy type adventure with creatures galore but enough human heart to reach a wide audience....in my opinion of course.  ^_^  Hmm...I think I feel a post coming on...because really....

A Creature Most Foul

Wow.

What to say about this one?

It seems the city of Huron is calling for its protector, its steward...to stop the Rones from committing a peril to one and all.  Sounds ominous, right?  What if I told you that message was being conveyed mentally, ESP-ish if you will, to a 14 year old boy....from another time...on Earth....the former brother of Mon?  Yep....things just got a bit more interesting.

With Merrows and scuccas and all other manner of fantastical beasts and devices, you are in for a wondrous adventure to say the least.  I was skeptical at first, given my penchant for disliking high fantasy novels at times, but this one keeps it grounded enough for the likes of me  The cast of characters is wonderful.  From Nikolas to Grand (his grandfather), Tim (his disbelieving brother) to the Wendell sisters (comprised of a shopper, protector, and chef in the making)....even Xantheus and Daniel (fantasy gamer and grand-high science geek respectively) bring their own flair to this motley crew.  The chapters transition the story between character voices and time frames smoothly, never leaving you behind in the stardust.

Final thoughts...what a tease!

I can't wait for the full book release this September.

Kindred Spirits

Scheduled for release June 2011, this book falls in the genre of Women's Fiction.  Now that's not to say a man wouldn't enjoy reading it (fellas what say you?), but it was made for female readers and all their girlfriends to delve into the spirit of friendship, life long connections, and reminiscing.  Can I also say what a great cover that is?  The colors are warm and inviting...and from what I've read so far in the teaser, that's got to be the group of friends we're going to get to know within the pages.

Curious what it's all about?  Here's my brief take...

Lynne is at the end of her time by circumstance as much as by choice.  The threads of life are pulling her away from all she holds dear slowly and surely but to cut the string early means to leave behind family, and friends.  She loves her family through and through, reflecting on that love through pictures on the mantle but friends like these only come around once in a lifetime too.  Lucky for her they are here to stay through the good times and those that try even the strongest of ties.  Lynne, Beth, Carol, and Mary Kay...the gals that make up the Ladies Society for the Conservation of Martinis complete with a myriad of memories to fondly hold dear.  What adventures they must have shared...what secrets they carry still.

Lucky for me, it won't be a tease for long (hehe).  It seems that the author is on Twitter and I happened to catch a tweet, or rather a retweet, from Dutton Books regarding the upcoming title and TADA...the rest is history.  *watches mailbox*  --insert surprised face--  *It arrived!*  Very curious to discover what secrets they may have (as all good friends do) and share in the life and times of these fabulous ladies.

Sorrow's Knot

Now before you go racing to the bookstore to pick up a copy, know this....it is still listed as a WIP (that's 'Work In Progress')!  I discovered the excerpt via a tweet and clicked out of curiosity...boy am I glad I did!  According to the information listed at her website, this will be a Young Adult novel set for release hopefully in early 2012 (Oh the horror, the agony of having to wait so long!) from Arthur A. Levine Books at Scholastic.  Curious what it's all about?  Here's my brief take...

Otter is the daughter of a rather powerful binder named Willow.  In their world, binders are those with power that help keep both their land and people safe from all the lurks beyond their borders through the magical bindings of the ward; for it's not simply crop eating deer that must be kept out but much darker and dangerous things that their magic is protecting them from.  Shadows, gants, slips...all names for various creatures with seemingly no mass that still occupy space with their voracious hunger and deadly desires.  A girl like Otter would be a feast to their famine should she ever find herself on the wrong side of the ward...good thing there will always be those around to keep watch and defend it...right?

Bright Young Things

So...this title doesn't officially come out until October 12th, 2010 (at least as of this post) and all I can say if WOW!  I was fortunate enough to obtain a sampler of the book from HarperTEEN on Twitter (THANKS!) thus allowing me access to the first 80 or some odd pages...which after reading, I passed along to a friend that was moving way way WAY out of town so the sampler now has a new home.  HOWEVER, the memory of the read remains strong.  How about a little inside peek?

Letty Larkspur and Cordelia Grey...two souls from a small town filled with a wanderlust to seek bigger and better things.  Their destination?  New York City...with its bright lights beckoning and an easy road to fortune and fame, how could they not desire it?  Breaking free of their pasts and pre-planned futures, they dream big and fight hard to get where they want to be...in the spotlight.  But wait!  Ms. Larkspur has been honest in her pursuit, but Ms. Grey....she has another agenda, no less noble in cause, but hidden nonetheless....and we all know how kindly we take to friends with secrets.  Cordelia Grey's secret?  It affects the lives of Astrid Donal, Darius Grey and Charlie Grey....to say the very least, but it's much too good to spoil here.  Let's just say with her spunk and drive she could either go very far...or get herself into A LOT of trouble.  As the last page of the sampler turns, she is at a turning point in her young life....just where it goes from here though is anybodies guess.

Grant it, it's not quite as long as the printed version I had, but it's still quite enough to draw you in.

Final thoughts...what a tease!

This title now resides firmly on my wish list.
