Nicole Oke is an award-winning children’s book author, mother, and member of the wildland firefighting community. She is based in Boise, Idaho, where she works at the National Interagency Fire Center and spends her spare time as a Girl Scout leader, helping to build tomorrow’s leaders.

Nicole is a champion of social-emotional intelligence. As the parent of two girls with big emotions, she understands the importance of teaching children the skills they need to identify, process, and regulate emotions.

Based in New Zealand, Richard Hoit has been illustrating children’s books for over twenty years now. Studying art and art history, he has had a passion for drawing and painting all his life.

Over the years he has worked on a wide range of projects from illustration work to posters, blankets and cookie tins. However his career has gone from strength to strength working fulltime on children’s books, magazines, educational publishing and picture books.

Today he continues to illustrate children’s books with different publishers around the globe and has his work published worldwide.

This was...this was...quite a trip!

As you already know, I'm newer to the Graphic Novel genre, and while I respect the work, time, and effort put into them, it's not my usual choice. Recently, I've fallen down the rabbit hole of a few tours that came my way that had me branching out. Do I regret my decision? No, I can't say that I do, however the adult ones I've run into are far more complex than I would have at first imagined.

When I think of the story format, I envision pictures telling a story with dialogue and descriptions throughout. These in particular are creative, dark, and fully imagined versions of tomorrow where the world as we know it, truly no longer exists. Can you imagine going through life WITHOUT emotions? I mean, it might give us less of a roller coaster sometimes, but it would also dull the actual experience of a roller coaster, literally and figuratively. So, no more screaming in mock terror at the exhilaration of speeding down a hill. No more heated arguments of over who gets to control the remote tonight. NO more stolen moments in the bedroom, heated glances across a crowded room, or intimate moments shared. No more laughter, crying, cheers, jeers, or otherwise outward emotion signs of interaction. You'd do away with the bad, but also all of the good. CAN YOU IMAGINE? In this case, breaking any of those emotional barriers isn't just a slap on the wrist offence, but potentially...the end of your life...from a creature that can't be reasoned with, that can't be talked down from their decision, heck...may not even have the mental capacities to actually process an alternative solution...and kills without remorse or exception.

The panels here tell this story in living color, and yet there are still many moments that are left up to the reader to fill. This collection of eight installments into one omnibus edition allow readers the chance to follow each person's story from start to finish without the pins and needles waiting in-between. You get to see how far a mother will go to avenge her son, while fighting for the human race. You see behind the eyes of a man so in control of himself that it ends up being his ultimate downfall. You see how desperate times may call for desperate measures, but also that there will always be those willing to take advantage of people in times of need. You see the highs of humanity and the lows, while you try to figure out exactly who the monsters really are...

A great addition to your must reads for graphic novel fans that love an "end of the world" type story where it may not seem probable, but it's not impossible, and there's no guarantees that anyone makes it out in the end.

About Peter Milligan:

Peter Milligan is a legendary British writer of comics, film, and television. One of Entertainment Weekly’s “it” writers of the early 2000s, Peter Milligan was at the forefront of the revolution in comics which were created for a more sophisticated, adult audience.

Shade the Changing Man for Vertigo offered a skewered look at American culture, while Enigma, Face, The Extremist, and Rogan Gosh pushed the boundaries of what comic books could do. Milligan was the longest-running writer of the cult horror comic Hellblazer, and his take on Human Target inspired the TV series. For Marvel, the hugely-popular X-Statix was a radical reworking of the X-Man paradigm, described by Kevin Smith (CLERKS etc) as “the most well-observed scholarly analysis of media-manipulation filtered through a pop-culture lens ever committed to the page”.

Sally Cantirino is a comic artist and illustrator currently based in New Jersey. She has been self-publishing comics and zines since she was a teenager. The title is not something that truly stands out on its own (though the cover is starkly gorgeous!), but the story within will touch your heart in so many ways. It’s been a hard year for Maisie Cannon, ever since she hurt her leg and could not keep up with her ballet training and auditions.

Her blended family is loving and supportive, but Maisie knows that they just can’t understand how hopeless she feels. With everything she’s dealing with, Maisie is not excited for their family midwinter road trip along the coast, near the Makah community where her mother grew up.

But soon, Maisie’s anxieties and dark moods start to hurt as much as the pain in her knee. How can she keep pretending to be strong when on the inside she feels as roiling and cold as the ocean?

What did I expect going into this one?

Honestly, I'm not certain. I think I was rather curious to see how the title played out, the significance of it, and what the overall message of the story would be. I read the "about" when the tour opportunity came along, but had since forgotten the ins and outs, and rather unlike me, didn't read the back cover prior to starting. So, you might say, I was in a sea of mystery, waiting to discover treasure of my own...and boy did I ever.

I'm not ashamed to admit this book had me in tears. Yes, several times in fact, I was so moved by Maisie's journey, so touched by her struggles, so confident in my own recognition of having been there too at various points in my own life that I was connected to her full heartedly. She was just a young girl reaching for her dreams, and fate, circumstances, a moment of careless freedom that should have been fine, turned everything south, leaving her unmoored in a wintery sea (often described as cold, choppy, and lonely). Her friends were all connected to her dream. Her life was fully focused on one day dancing before an audience as the prima in a show she was destined for. What was she to do when the unexpected sidelined her...but try, try again? It wasn't the trying that was the problem, but the pushing of things too far, too fast. The allowance of all the hurt she was feeling, both physically and mentally, to get the better of her. Alone, she may have continued to be the hurt person that hurt others...but with the help of her family, once she lets them in whether she wants to or not, she can take the first steps needed to find herself, her center, and her possibilities once again.

OMG...okay, I need to stop now because I'm seriously tearing up just typing this. Suffice it to say that there is SO MUCH HEART, SO MUCH UNDERSTANDING, SO MUCH of the things that everyone feels in some fashion at some time while struggling to figure out up from down once again that it's a book that really needs to be in the hands of young readers...AND beyond. It carries messages of not only acceptance and validation of the various emotions we go through, but also the strength found in familial and ancestral ties, the courage we can glean from our histories, the power of choice, and the impact we can have on not only our world, but that of others. Do yourself a favor, grab a copy for yourself, and share it with a friend...I think you'll be amazed at the doors it just might open up.
