About the book...
One day, Odette the ant wakes up feeling stressed. After realizing that all she does is work, Odette decides to leave her anthill in search of the freedom to create her own world. Along the way, she meets Marcus, a lost mouse, and together they discover simple ways to feel better. Inspired by her journey and this wonderful new friendship, Odette finds her way back home to the colony with a new sense of being.

Odette’s Alphabet is a mindful story that offers a map to handle big emotions with kindness, unity, and courage. Fun and easy activities support each of the chapters, along with letters of the alphabet to provide additional opportunities for learning while encouraging young readers to explore meditation practices.

Sometimes a Picture Book is not just a Picture Book, and the same can be said about alphabet books too.  Surface level, this one looks like a cute story about an ant name Odette, and, from the second half of the title, we deduce that it will include the alphabet, at least according to her.  A curious concept, but not as unique as the actual product.

This is in fact not a simple Picture Book or Alphabet Book, but rather a learning tool disguised as both, filled with friendly images of our little ant friend, and her friends, to draw the eye and the attention of little readers.  It is in fact a story containing an alphabet journey, but only as it applies to the progression of Odette's story.  It is in fact a cute way to make the concepts explored relatable to younger readers.  What concepts?  Ah, and that is the million dollar question, now isn't it?  You see, the story takes us along Odette's journey from stressed to blessed, so to speak, as she finds balance, understanding, and inner peace, while making a few new friends along the way.

Have you guessed it yet?  The big reveal is that it introduces little ones to yoga, meditation, and other mind quieting techniques, and invites them to try out some of the things Odette learns along the way.  For example, K IS FOR KINDNESS has you breathing for specific counts, and reminiscing on kindness you've been the recipient of, as well as things you might be able to do for others...and the other moments are just as special, just as mindful to not only entertain, but help kiddos build healthy tools to get them through some of the harder things life may bring.  A great read as a story in one go, or as a progressive tale shared one letter and activity at a time at the end of a busy day.

TCBR AWARENESS TOUR: My Old Friend, Then by Katherine Davis-Gibbon - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we welcome The Children's Book Review as we join their AWARENESS TOUR for a Picture Book title that asks little readers to take a moment, slow down, and appreciate not just the future and the past, but the present.  Ready or not, fair readers, here comes today's blog tour guest and ebook of choice...

About the book...
A child ponders … who is her best, most loyal friend? Is it her constant companion, Then, who regales her with extravagant stories of their shared past and imagined future? Or is it precious, patient Now, with whom she sensitively explores each new moment that unfolds?

My Old Friend, Then explores mindfulness the same way that kids approach life: with curiosity, humor, and unspoiled sincerity. Pairing accessible and relatable language with vivid, quirky illustrations, this book invites readers to share in a young girl’s journey as she grapples with the trappings—and delights in the boundless potential—of her own brilliant mind.

This colorfully illustrated work invites little ones in to explore concepts of time and grow an appreciation for living in the moment.  Now, obviously, it doesn't do so in quite those terms because it's talking to wee readers not above them, so instead of timelines, and streams of stats, you have the introduction of Then and Now as friends.  Then is always there to remind and contemplate things since passed, but Now brings to life moments that turn into memories and create the colorful tapestry of our lives. Together, they show the lead child how important they both are, in their own right, and help teach those kiddos reading along the same lesson too.

Try to remember back to when YOU were a child.  Were you more concerned with the present and all that was happening?  Or were you perhaps more concerned with things that already happened, and what adventure was around the next bend?  It's okay...it's GOOD to look in both directions, so long as we don't forget to celebrate the time we have now.  The old adage of "the past is history, but the present is a gift" certainly has itself grounded in truth, and in this story it makes the concept more accessible to little ones, granting them the go ahead to stop and smell the roses, even in our go go go world.
