Halo or not, he's one... HELL OF AN ANGEL by Christi Barth - REVIEW!

Ladies and gents, fans of Romantasy, we're all waiting on pins and needles for the next installment of a particular dragon rider series to release, HOWEVER there is STELLAR reading to be done in the interim, and the title in today's review spotlight is positively HEAVEN SENT...or Hell sent, depending on your angle, but I digress.  In any case, it's the SECOND installment in the Unlocking His Heart series, of which I've read the first book (ADORED IT!), and am just now learning that the series is even called that, but whatever name you put on it, it will be followed closely by a resounding end note, drop mic summary of being AMAZING!  Have I got your attention?  Good, good, that's the plan.  😉  Without further ado, let's take a closer look at...

Unlocking His Heart, Book 2

About the book...
Raised in Hell. Living in Buffalo. And on the verge of accidentally destroying both realms…

Dark angel and actuary Evangeline Thayer hates taking unnecessary risks, but she knows becoming human will be worth it. All the creatures in Hell have bullied her about her negligible ‘power’ her whole life. And don’t get her started on why she has wings if she can’t even fly?!? She just needs a teensy bit of help with removing her power…which is where a very hot, very flirty, and absolutely infuriating Nephilim comes in.

Half-angel Gideon Durand has been fighting demons a long time, but he’s never heard of a dark angel. Least of all one this gorgeous, stubborn, and with the power to completely nullify evil. Maybe in Hell, that’s a weakness—but with an unknown evil on the loose and murdering Nephilim?—that’s a damned useful skill. So Gideon strikes a deal with Evangeline: he’ll scratch her wings…if she’ll scratch his.

Now good and evil are—temporarily—working together. And might even be having steamy fun…if it wasn’t for a rather inconvenient threat trying to unleash the apocalypse, once and for all.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Full disclosure...
...I was just starting this one and encountered one of MANY funny moments that I wanted to share with family members, so I broke into a 15 minute explanation of the series as I've read it thus far to set the appropriate mood JUST to read the quote.  Do I regret it?  Nope, not even a little bit.
The entirety of the book contains moments, dialogue, and feelings you'll want to savor, share, and shout to the world!  I loved the idea of a dark angel...that wasn't actually dark!  Eva was an incredible character, both the woman and the dark angel, and when those two sides came together, even more remarkable.  It was fun getting to know her as she got to know herself.  Grant it, I would rather that she didn't experience all the, pardon the pun, but hell she did go through, including some pretty intense bullying, but she learns, she grows, and eventually can kick some pestilent behind (there's a inside joke there, but you'll have to read the book to uncover it!). The story behind the Fallen and how Lucifer wasn't actually running around the flames and brimstone with a forked tail and horns was enlightening.  Whether it was meant to be or not, it was thought provoking honestly...I mean, he was one of the elite until jealousy stepped in, so who really knows?  Anywho, theological discussions aside (hello...don't come at me, this is a work of fiction; enjoy it for what it is!), when Eva meets her grandfather for the first time, it played out perfectly.  We saw the dark side of him, while we also saw the familial side, introducing the concept of something or someone not being entirely light or dark.  Did I mention Gideon?  Oh my stars, or should I say HEAVENS!  While we got the oh so delicious Rhys in book one, Gideon is nothing to slouch at either.  He comes off as a playboy, though completely upfront and honest with those he "encounters", but there's more to this golden haired nephilim than meets the eye...and while he and Eva are verbally duking it out, protesting doth too much, it was a pleasure waiting for them to get it together.  😏
All in all, an amazing read you won't want to miss!  If you're a Paranormal Romance fan, or simply love a great story filled with whit and humor, all played out while trying to save the world, THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU!
REVIEW starring... Imperfect Angel by Christi Barth
Love.
The course of it never did run smooth.
Add in an unknown destiny, a whole paranormal world you were oblivious to, and total life or death, end of the world type of vibes...and yeah, this one probably won't run smooth either, but you'll LOVE it every step of the way!
Our second tour on the blog today, features a NEW RELEASE from Entangled Amara, currently touring with TLC Book Tours.  It's written by an author whose work I've read previously (okay, one other book, but I liked it!), but was in another subgenre, so this was a new adventure for me.  Did I enjoy same said adventure?  You bet your Romance reading little heart I did!  Let's take a closer look...
by
Christi Barth
Entangled: Amara
Release Date:  October 25, 2022
About the book...
Three days ago, all Maisy Norgate had was a stack of bills, about a gazillion jobs, and her sunny-as-hell outlook. Now, thanks to an uncle she never knew about, she’s inherited an ornate skeleton key with absolutely no idea what it’s for–or why she has it. Which is exactly when a ridiculously handsome guy claiming to be an angel shows up at her door and all hell breaks loose…
Nephilim Rhys Boyce cannot believe that Maisy is the new Keeper of the Key. Why would anyone bequeath this warm, bubbly redhead the key to Hell? And to make matters worse, she’s given the key to the first person who asked for it. A demon. Yep, Maisy is determined to make his job–not to mention some seriously inconvenient temptation–as hard as possible.
First a half angel with a very human chip on his shoulder must find a way to convince Maisy that angels and demons do exist. Then Rhys will have to break the really bad news…that she might have accidentally ended the world.
Honestly, it seems that I pull this image out A LOT when I'm reading/reviewing titles published by Entangled.  They just seem to have such a great variety of talented writers, giving us stories that we want to read, and, once discovered, don't want to be without!  So yeah, I'm a fangirl for the publisher, but this story...OH THIS STORY!  LOVE!
Imperfect may be in the title, but the story is anything but!
We definitely have the sunshine-and-grump trope going on, but with a paranormal twist.  I love the backstory that's developed without getting too heavy handed.  I love the unexpected, well ALL of the unexpected that waits Maisy in her journey to possibly, maybe, eventually, probably becoming the next Keeper.  (Hey, I can't spoil the ending!)  I love her style (polka dot pants...rainbow converse...we'd be besties and sharing closets!), her attitude (nothing is too insurmountable to attack with a smile and a happy heart), her innocence (not her fault, totally her Uncle's...even if I do forgive him eventually), and her GINORMOUS heart...that even extends it's loving gaze to her new half-man half-angel friends (well one is more than, in more than one way!).  Even in the face of great evil (Volac...Lillith...shall I continue?), she stays true to herself, and if you think about it, perhaps that was her greatest strength all along!
I want to say SO MUCH MORE, but without rambling, I'm not sure how.  We get a chance to see the mysteries of containment between Heaven and H*ll with all the snark you can muster, all the danger you can throw, and a whole lot of sparks!  Let's just say the Nephilim aren't the only ones flying high!  Speaking of these guys, all are memorable, but Rhys will definitely hold a special place in your heart...and on your Book Boyfriend list.  *wink wink*  There's much to smile at, chuckle with, and many situations you'll feel the need to read aloud to the person sitting next to you.  Trust me, you will.  It's a great read for Paranormal Romance fans that are diehard fans, as well as those that just like to dip a figurative toe into those misty waters now and again.
Silver Dagger Book Tours presents... THE CROSS OF CIARAN by Andrea Matthews - SPOTLIGHT + GIVEAWAY!
The Cross of Ciaran
by Andrea Matthews
Genre: Paranormal Romance
When a fifth century pagan priest is unearthed in Ireland fifteen hundred years after being entombed, archaeologist Caitlin O’Connell is convinced it’s the find of the century. The body is in perfect condition, right down to the intricate tattoos adorning the Celt’s skin. In fact, if scientific data hadn’t proved otherwise, she would swear he hadn’t been interred more than a few hours.
Eager to discover more about the mysterious Celt, Caitlin accompanies the body back to the New York museum where she’s employed, but before she has time to study him, the priest disappears without a trace. Rumors surrounding the event begin to circulate and result in the excavation’s benefactor pulling the plug on the entire expedition.
The rumors are not far off the mark though. After being buried alive for betraying his goddess and his priesthood in the dawning age of Christianity, Ciarán wakes to a strange new world. Alone and frightened in an unforgiving city, he stumbles upon the only thing familiar to him and seeks sanctuary within the church walls. With the help of the parish’s pastor, Father Mike, Ciarán slowly grows accustomed to his surroundings, though he’s plagued by dark dreams and the disturbing sensation that an evil from his past has followed him into the future. But a more immediate danger lurks on his doorstep.
Caitlin is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery concerning her missing Celt, and when she meets her Uncle Mike’s new handyman, Ciarán Donnelly, she’s convinced the handsome Irishman knows more about the theft than he’s letting on. Yet, even she can’t deny the attraction between them, simmering below the surface and blurring the lines between her personal and professional life. But will Ciarán’s secrets draw them together or shatter their future forever?
Andrea Matthews is the pseudonym for Inez Foster, a historian and librarian who loves to read and write and search around for her roots, genealogical speaking. In fact, it was while doing some genealogical research that she stumbled across the history of the Border reivers. The idea for her first novel came to mind almost at once, gradually growing into the Thunder on the Moor series. And the rest is history, as they say.
The DJ wrapped his beat headphones around his neck as he said, “All right, all right, all right y’all. You know the drill, you have ten minutes to meet your mystery date, but if that special someone slips into your bubble, don’t be afraid to hit that buzzer. On my mark...” He lifted a mini foghorn and sounded it, “Go!”
Immediately, a burly redneck sat across from me. His Confederate flag tattoo covered his triceps, scissors had cut off his sleeves and frayed pieces of strings remained. I examined what I could see of his face, but the dip in his mouth instinctively made me want to gag as specks of it covered his tobacco-stained teeth.
Samantha and I sideways glanced at each other as I smiled sweetly at him and held out my hand.
Hi, I’m Kristen.”
Well, sweet cheeks. I’m Cleetus.”
So tell me about yourself, Cleetus,” I said, mustering up as much courage as possible for the next ten minutes of my life.
He leaned in towards me. “How about me and you get out of this joint?”
Excuse me?” I said sitting back, not knowing whether to feel appalled or disgusted by his gesture. Who am I kidding? It was definitely both.
I said, how about we take this back to my place and pick up this conversation in a much more comfortable setting...”
Umm… I think I’m good. Next!” I yelled, catching everybody’s attention.
Next? You’re nexting me?!” he said, raising his voice.
I was taken back by his tone, I knew I had insulted him but let’s face it. He was a creep. He should have taken the hint and just moved on but from the looks of this, it was about to get ugly and quick.
Hey, Hick! I think that’s enough,” Samantha started to stand, ready to come to my defense.
I quickly beat her to the punch. I was a woman, yes. I had an immune disease, yes. But I was not weak. “Yes, next. Now leave before I have you thrown out,” I snarled at him.
You high-class skank. You think you’re better than me, don’t you?” he spat, reaching across the table grabbing my arm.
I was about to yell for the bouncers when a tall, broad man grabbed his shoulder. Cleetus quickly released my arm but I could feel a bruise from his grip under the skin as I rubbed my arm in an effort to ease the pain.
His eyes were an onyx color and his five o’clock shadow definitely piqued my interest, especially his build. His suit pants hugged his hips in all the right places, snug on the hips and loose fitting the rest of the way down. They were one of those expensive ones, specially tailored. My eyes wandered upwards, loving his tightly fitting jacket. The man was fit, and my hands itched to touch him.
I didn’t have time to admire him anymore as he took the situation I was in into his own hands.
I think the lady has asked you to leave nicely and more than once,” he stated bluntly.
I'm a Native Texan, born and raised close to the heart of the great Lone Star state. I am 31 years old, and I was born in January of 89' and got to grow up during a great time. I honestly don't consider myself a Millennial, and really hate that title. Also I'm a part-time working secretary and a full-time mother/housewife, as well as a Lupus Warrior.
Having Lupus, means a life of inside living, and the sun is known as my arch-nemesis, my personal kryptonite. I wanted to leave a legacy behind, something my kids could one day look back on and say, yeah my mom did that.
Thanks to the encouragement of friends and family, I found a passion in writing paranormal romance books. Anything fantasy usually suits my novels and I tend to be able to reach anyone in multiple genres. Most of my story ideas come to me in the most unexpected time and places, such as my dreams. They will plague me non-stop until I get my rear up and write it out.
I like to explore new types of characters such as Sandmen and Boogeymen for example. I really wanted to give them their own world, such as A Sandman's Forbidden Love.
God has granted me success that I never imagined was possible., which led me to my obsession with the paranormal. Now, I know shifters aren't real but Angels are another story. So Angels are also a part of my obsession, I will sit on the computer doing extensive research on both Sandmen and Angels trying to get my facts straight.
Then, on the side, I create Art Journals that can be cross generational from thirteen to sixty years younger. My goal with these types of books is to reach people who need that extra feel good in their lives.
Hi there!
A Date With a Vampire
Love Bites, Paranormal Dating Agency Book 1
by Abbey MacMunn
Genre: Paranormal Romance
You are cordially invited to join Love Bites, Paranormal Dating Agency. Where fur, fangs, feathers, and the occasional human, meet their match.
Witch Harper Clarke is pretty sure misfortune follows her around like a bad smell. Her spells end in disaster, her dating agency for supernaturals has an embarrassing lack of clients, and her love life is a washout. So when a vampire signs up to the agency and she can’t find him a match, she agrees to date the vamp herself.
Charmer Damon Vertefeuille has it all; power, status, wealth, but becoming a vampire to get his errant brother out of trouble isn’t what he expected. Newbie vamps aren’t supposed to be dangerous, but one look at his witchy date and he has a sudden desire to sink his fangs into her neck.
Thing is, she wants his bite.
Chemistry sizzles, but when Damon’s brother threatens to tear them apart, the lines blur between loyalty, love and dark desires.
Does my bum look big in this?” Harper Clarke twisted her torso, casting a critical eye over her appearance in her bedroom mirror.
You look fantastic,” said Zarya. “Stunning, in fact.”
Coming from Zarya, who had no trouble getting any man she desired with a mere flutter of her eyelashes, and that haunting siren’s song of hers, was indeed a compliment of great magnitude, but Harper still wasn’t convinced. “This is supposed to be my lucky black dress, but I don’t remember it being this tight the last time I wore it.”
Lucky? That would be a first for you,” her friend jibed. Then she choked on her drink.
Karma.
Yeah, okay, so I’m not the luckiest of witches, but I can live in hope, can’t I?” She grabbed a cushion off her bed and threw it at her. “I thought best friends were supposed to be supportive.”
Zarya fended off the cushion assault with her arm. “I am. I said you look stunning, and you do.”
Harper drained her glass of prosecco. “Thanks.”
You’re welcome. So, who are you going on a date with? A Fae? An angel?” Her eyes widened like an excited child. “Ooh, a werewolf, maybe? I’m a sucker for an alpha male. Does he have a friend?”
No, he’s not a werewolf, he’s a vampire.”
A vamp? Are you mad?”
No, I’m not mad. His paperwork says he only turned four months ago, which means he won’t be dangerous.”
What paperwork? Wait…” It didn’t take her long to suss it out. “Oh my God, he’s a client from your dating agency, isn’t he?”
Bingo. Harper might have known she couldn’t keep a secret from her friend for long.
No… yes. He might be.” She glanced at Zarya, noting her disapproval. “Don’t pull that face at me. I know it’s not exactly professional, but I haven’t been on a date in goodness knows how long, and he sounded so charming on the phone, and not at all ‘Vlad the Impaler—”
Wait, you arranged a blind date with a vampire?” she interrupted. “What if he is dangerous, or worse, ugly?”
Vampires are never ugly, everyone knows that.”
Abbey MacMunn writes paranormal and fantasy romance. She lives in Hampshire, UK, with her husband and their four children.
When she’s not writing, she likes to watch films and TV shows – anything from rom-coms to superheroes to science fiction movies.
