About the author....

Charles L. “Chip” Bell, Jr. lives in the city of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Linda, is the father of two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica, and is a practicing attorney specializing in personal injury litigation, with his main office in Arnold, Pennsylvania.

Born on February 23, 1950, in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania, he grew up in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, and he graduated from Tarentum High School in 1968, attended Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania from 1968 to 1972, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. He served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1974, attended Duquesne University School of Law from 1975 to 1979, and graduated Cum Laude. He has practiced law as a personal injury trial attorney with the law firm of Rosenberg, Sewak, Pizzi, and Bell from 1979 to 2002, and thereafter as a sole practitioner up to and including the present date.

So, where do I even begin because really, the story you start out with is not the book you end up with.  Confused?  Allow me to attempt to shed a cleaner light upon our subject.

This is a story that weaves in and out of itself.  Chapter after chapter, we meet new characters until the game board is set and you're constantly wondering whether we'll reach a checkmate or stalemate.  You read each page growing no closer to a clear understanding and yet you are compelled to continue doing more of the same.  A sign of craziness?  Perhaps...but you won't care.  You simply MUST know what in fact is going on and how the tales of all the players involved wind up.  Now, back to that in and out weaving I mentioned before...

Literally every character we meet can be connected back to another until we come full circle.  Don't believe me?  Watch this...

Start with Cassie, the young lady becoming a tree...

...Jasper, the young guard that watches over her from time to time...

...who's girlfriend is the daughter of Marcus, a gentleman who's lost his keys (piano that is)...

...who is neighbors with the wife of the gentleman who lost his job, LITERALLY (as in the building and all)....

....who has a daughter that is friend's with (however unwillingly) Mrs. Feathersby who lost a wall of her home...

...who lives in the neighborhood of Jake who is a finder of lost things and his father Anthony, who has lost his connection with his son...

...who is dating (somewhat) a young lady whom has lost her way.

TADA!

*catches breath*

It's confusing but curious.

It's infuriating, yet will snare your interest.

It's unusual though easy to understand in bits and pieces.

The ending though....now that threw me for a loop.  To me, it can be taken a few ways...either the tree thought the comment was about her or the person who showed leaves that the comment was said about is the mysterious Floss, bringing us full circle with all the characters.  I'm still pondering this one out in dribs and drabs and yet I don't regret my time within the pages in the least. The author truly has a way of involving you in each of her characters' lives and her knack for pulling it all together was remarkable indeed.

All in all, a read I'd recommend to both Fiction and Fantasy fans who love a strange and unusual story.  This one is told with everyday people who end up in extraordinary circumstances defying logic and leaves you to question which way is up....because truly it all depends which direction you are pointed.

Okay, so for those that have been frequent visitors of my site, you'll know that this is actually a more rare genre choice for me.  I do read mysteries, but a bit more seldom than other categories simply because the cozy ones are often too forward with the who, what, where, and why of it all, leaving me with all the answers and nothing to look forward to.  This one?  Definitely not a case in point.

Emma Lee is a hoot and a half...and that's BEFORE she becomes unwisely inebriated while out with the local heartthrob of a Sheriff (Jack Henry).  *ahem*  She feels like the black sheep of the family, much preferring to handle the behind the scenes work and prep of the funeral home she and her sister run.  All of that changes when she's touched with a case of "funeral trauma"...for the worst.  I mean really, seeing and talking to ghosts was suppose to BOOST your social life, right?  Or was that conversing and mingling with the living?  *ponders* Push comes to shove and well actually because of a potential shove, Emma Lee is forced to deal with her new found "talent" because quite frankly if she doesn't, the recently departed Ruthie Sue Payne will not leave her ever loving soul alone.

The antics, the conversations, the doubts of her sanity both from within and outside...they all add up to a story with character that'll have you stuck to the page like a stray cat to a can of tuna. Whether friend or foe, the characters are memorable.  The story ties things up rather nicely by book's end while leaving you prepped for the next installment in the series.  My only complaint is that we never find out who or why Ruthie Sue's clothes were changed.  Sounds like an odd question but if someone died in pink pajamas and bunny slippers only to walk the after life in something a bit more chic (not to mention it IS brought up in the story when trying to solve the murder), you gotta ask....though in this case we're left with suppositions (my bets on Granny Raines!).

In conclusion, a wonderful start to a promising series.  It combines the humor and warmth often found in Women's Fiction or Chick Lit with a murder most foul that needs solving STAT!  The paranormal aspect works well with all things considered and though a big part of the story, it doesn't overshadow the actual plotline.  The ARC for book 2 (A Ghostly Grave) arrived on my doorstep with this one, so be prepared for another dose of Ghostly Southern Mysteries in the coming days.

What Solomon Saw and Other Stories by Mary Dean Carson

Today, we're shining the spotlight on a short story collection that's all about love in its many forms.  Now, that statement can be taken many different ways and in this case, it should be because while some stories focus on the classic "girl meets boy", others focus on heavier topics such as infidelity, trust broken, and taking a stand.  So if you're ready to take the plunge, join me as we dip out literary toes into today's book of choice...

As I said, this is a short story collection that covers a broad spectrum of love.  Overall, it works, but I wasn't a SOLD customer at first.  Upon reading the very first sentence, I almost turned my head the other way.  No, really.  It wasn't so much what was said but the words chosen to relay Lester Johnson's desire to see a particular portion of Libby Tatum's anatomy, the story of which shares the title of the book.  Thank goodness I kept on though because further along, you understand it's merely where the story is set, the time period in which it occurs, and the age of the characters telling the story; acceptable for a short story, but not my choice if it was a full length novel.  Anywho, to save you and I both some time while still getting to the nitty gritty of today's title, let's break things down by individual story.

1.  'What Solomon Saw'

The person in question is not actually a person, but a tree and BOY OH BOY did "he" get an eye full....especially when that lightning set things in motion.  Random force of nature or act of God?  Hmmm...

2.  'The Army Jacket'

Shows us that patience and understanding can solve even the biggest of problems, but having a little something extra never hurts either.  Glad to see good judgment was used in this case.

3.  'Oh!  Canada'

If you can't trust the one you're with, who can you trust?  Hard to guess with the starring duo in this story but in the end, all the bad washes out.

4.  'Rich as Pluff Mudd'

Reminds us that just because others seem to have the perfect life, below the surface things can be much much different.  Acting out isn't only for children...

5.  'Speckled Bird'

I thought for sure with this one we would be dealing with a suicide but our leading lady is made of much tougher stuff and the promise she makes in the end will have a smile crossing your lips no matter how hard you try.

6.  'Girl Interrupted at Her Music'

A moving story dealing with an all too real fall out from the tragedy that was 9/11.  Life would never be the same for anyone after that fateful day but this account breathes new life into it all over again.

7.  'A Split in the Seam'

 I was highly entertained by this one especially when the daughter thought for certain she was going mad (who wouldn't?!).  In the end, that bitter sweetness that comes from sharing life and love touched my heart when secrets and possible futures were revealed.

8.  'Avalanche'

An accident on the mountain and an unfamiliar pair of expensive boots leads a widow to uncover just what her husband was up to or if his heart was in the right place.

9.  'Liar, Liar'

What they don't know can't hurt them...well, this story will prove THAT statement wrong.  One lie leads to another leads to another leads to confessing to one thing in order to avoid the truth at hand only to wind up with....well, certainly less than you started?  Phew!  Too much work for me, thank you very much.  I'll take the truth and live with it.

10.  'The Penitent'

I most much surprised by this one.  I never saw the twist coming.  Most startling if you're a big believer in the sanctity of religious roles regardless of circumstances...but still, moving.

11.  'A Whore for Thursdays'

Definitely not what you think it is...or for that matter what the widow thinks it is.  Can't say more or I'll spoil it but you'd be well advised not to go into shady massage parlors and ask for a Swedish.  Okay?  Okay.  *ahem*

Though I'm not usually a fan of short stories (what can I say...I like to spend more time with my characters and their lives before giving them up), once I got into this collection, I was stead fast in reading it through to the end.  I was also surprised by some of the connections that are made throughout the book as some characters come back around to add more detail to their lives and circumstances.  (Nice touch!) My favorite amongst them?  Hmm, I'd have to say 'A Split in the Seam'.  Why?  Well, it's hard to put my finger on exactly one point or another but I think the mother daughter relationship portrayed even after death, and the realization that no one is ever truly gone when they are wholly loved.

In conclusion, an interesting mix of both characters and stories that you're sure to find a personal connection to along the way.  Though shocking sometimes in actions, each person introduced has something to add to the story that leaves its mark for better or worse.  Good for a single sitting or taken in dribs and drabs, but best enjoyed in your favorite reading nook.

Writing stories came late, but the seeds were planted early. Growing up on the front porches of North Carolina was where Cason listened, and in time, learned to be a storyteller. In 2000, she submitted "What Solomon Saw" to Chicago Public Radio's Stories on Stage. It ended up becoming one of six finalists and ultimately spurred her to enroll at the University of Chicago's Writers Studio where she won the 2008 prize for fiction. Since then, she has been a featured writer at Chicago’s Story Club, cofounder of Indigan Storytellers, a workshop for oral storytelling, and creator of Wine, Women and Stories, an Indiana literary salon that raises money for a variety of arts-related causes. In addition to the Writers Studio prize, Mary Dean also won the University of Memphis Pinch Award and California's WestSide Story Contest. Mary Dean lives along Lake Michigan with her husband. Together they have six children. She is completing her first novel.

Okay, so first things first, as soon as I saw the cover, I was captivated.  It reminded me so much of the couple from The Princess Bride that I simply had to know more...and that's coming from a reader that doesn't dabble in the pure Fantasy realm that often.

Now, second thing to note....I didn't just receive the book for review but a special little package... 

....including the beautiful hardback, tour badge and two Fairytale Brownies to indulge in during my read.  Admittedly, I have eaten one...the other I am saving for a rainy day (or not so rainy, perhaps just a chocolate required sorta day which I foresee in the VERY near future ^-^).  Anywho, getting back to the reading at hand...

Martak and Marianna are a wonderful couple, both compelling and innocent in their encounters until passion ignites emotions in them both that they've never experienced before.  Though they've never been touched by love of this magnitude, they are unable to deny it (nor should they!), leading us to witness their firsts on all counts....including heartbreak.  Now, it's not in the way you might think.  Neither has done anything to the other, they are merely pawns in a game being played by Good and Evil to determine the light or darkness of our days.  Poor dears...they never knew what they were in store for but then truly, what lovers do?  When all is said and done, a horrible deed has been carried out but I dare say with love to guide the way, the wounds left behind can be healed.  A hard story to read emotionally with all that happens but certainly memorable.

As for the presentation, who doesn't like a good storybook?  I mean, I know I do and the formatting serves us well here.  The full page illustrations are not as often as you might think (bummer) but when they do make an appearance, they are worth the extra time to explore.  Along the way, we have smaller pictures to break up the text depicting key objects important to the characters or illuminating something to come in a more symbolic style.  The rich colors draw the eye while the scenes portrayed bring otherwise mundane circumstances to life....okay, well except the initial meeting of Good; that was pretty big illustrated or not.

In the end, it's a story I'd recommend for Fantasy and Storybook fans alike, so long as they are in their late teens or adult years; once again, the story is mostly chaste, but there are instances more sensual in nature as well as those that I wouldn't wish on my enemy (don't worry, he is dealt with....*hmpf*).  Come for the illustrations, stay for the story, and leave with another couple of which to remark upon the next time you think of "great loves".

After earning an MFA from Syracuse University, Roth moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where she worked as a registered art therapist, helping emotionally disturbed and developmentally disabled children, before earning her Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education. In 1991, Roth co-founded Getting to the Point, Inc., a premier consulting firm that specializes in helping corporations attract high level executives to Pittsburgh. A member of the National Speakers Association, she has published numerous professional papers and articles. Today, we're kicking off a stroll through the blogosphere, courtesy of  Historical Fiction Virtual Blog Tours, for the first book in a new Young Adult series that's really going to grab your attention.  Don't believe me?  Well, I'm speaking from experience and had I the time to work it in for a review, I would have happily read it myself but alas, ye olde schedule is full so I have to leave the reading to all of you.  That's right.  I'm expecting one of you to report back to me with all the goodness that this read was because from what I saw, it promises much.  Ready to go ladies and gents?  Your wish is my command.  Today's spotlight shines on....

About the book...

Snow White was a pet name her mother had given her, but her mother’s dead now. Adelaide hates that name anyway. A rampant fever claimed Adelaide’s mother just like a thousand others in Cologne where the people die without Last Rites and the dead are dumped in a large pit outside of the city walls. Adelaide’s father is determined to obtain a funeral for his wife, but that requires bribing the parish priest, Father Soren. Really, I mean how can you NOT be curious?

A Snow White retelling?  Definitely a 'wish list' addition for me.

First off, I'm loving the cover. The combination of scenery and face shot forces you to take it all in versus focusing on only one aspect.  Then you have the little dig of "...not all fairytales end in happily ever after"...color me curious!  Now, why am I curious...

I'm curious to know just why she hates the name she was "nick'd" with.  I'm also interested to know why seeking justice is going to make her lose pretty much EVERYONE.  That's gotta be one BIG secret!  Can't help but wonder who it's been eating up inside hiding it too....and those my friends are just the thoughts that crossed m mind in reading the synopsis.  Imagine what would happen if I opened the cover!

About the author....

Besides being the award-winning author of The Fairytale Keeper series, Andrea Cefalo is a self-proclaimed medievalist, hopeless bookworm, and social media junkie. She graduated with honors from Winthrop University in 2007 where she studied Medieval art history and children’s literature. The next three books in The Fairytale Keeper series—The Countess’ Captive, The Baseborn Lady, and The Traitor’s Target—will debut in 2015 and 2016.
