Sorry, couldn't help myself!). Word to the wise, there is a passage or two that very well may turn your stomach, but if you can manage through (as they are short!), you're in for a VERY interesting ride. I gotta say, this was QUITE the read!
It's the beginning of a trilogy, and though one usually puts a lot of hope/faith in that start, nothing could have quite prepared me for this. Once upon a time, Caitlyn was a Lady, ruling in both familial and marriage titles fairly beside her husband. All was well until one day, death came to her door in a most atrocious, most obscene, most fantastical way...the delivery of her husband's body...in THREE BLOODY PIECES.
OMG!
Seriously, can you imagine? Wait, no...don't. Too much, too much...and yet that is just the beginning, which begs readers to ask...what could possibly happen next? Ah, yes...what indeed! What we encounter next reminded me vaguely of the Braveheart trials...those too big for their britches conquering the supposedly little man next door to advance their land holdings, servant quota, and women...but not all is lost in this particular case as Lady Caitlyn flees with her husband's trusted hands to seek refuge from one that could still offer such things...then again, nothing short of salvation ever came without a price and Lady Caitlyn is about to learn just have steep a price she's paid and will still pay for the rest of her days.
Ah! I just, I don't even know where to start! From the title battles to lusting after lords that would be king, black magic and deals whispered in the dark, alliances forged and trusts broken beyond repair, lives taken and those changed for all time...there is SO MUCH going on here, it'll keep you flipping epages long into the night. NO, really...I read this in basically the course of a day while still having to put in a 12 hour shift, so yeah...definitely compelling.
The author really puts you there in each scene, whether you like it or not, so you feel the what they feel, smell what they smell, see what they see, and shrink back from the darkness lurking just beyond the fringes. Let's just say that by book's end, if I didn't already have the next one on my radar, I'd be seeking it out post haste because that ending...eek! It's just too much to bear NOT knowing what will happen when...and with that one in control...and what about the spell...?!?!
