So, recently I've been reading through a slew of ebooks...no, don't get excited, I haven't switched to the "e" team...and they've all been in one particular genre...Fantasy, or more specifically in this case, YOUNG ADULT Fantasy.  You know, the magical, mystical, wonder-filled worlds inhabited by other beings both past and present, and brimming with adventure!  Yes, THOSE works of fantasy, and today's title is no different.  In fact, it's the FIRST in a series (SIX BOOKS...why did no one TELL ME there were SIX BOOKS!) from this new-to-me author, and I must say...ME LIKEE! 😉 But I digress, far be it from me to twist your arm over any title, but nobody said anything about suggestive persuasion.  Ready a spot on your MUST READ list, here comes today's ebook of choice...

Though admittedly I've not read the series, I liken what I know of it (and saw in the film...don't judge me!) to the Eragon series.  There's the wiser, more world wise dragon rider tasked with teaching the next generation how to ride, care for, and bond with their dragons, as well as learn the finer points of protecting the townspeople, just in case.  Of course, there aren't any ACTUAL attacks to worry about.  I mean not at least for many winters...until now.  The introduction of twins Duskya and Ruskya along with the dragons that just happen to choose them seems to have turned the rider world on its wings.  They possess a natural ability that seems unnatural and one mysterious and vicious rider seems to know just why that is...and wants it for himself.  Imagine that... *smirk* ...of course, knowing and obtaining are two VERY different things and he's gonna have to get through some serious talent if he hopes to even get in range.  Of course, he IS pretty evil...so underhanded is essentially his middle name.

Dragons, dragon riders, dragon courage, mysterious riders from another colony, half revealed pasts (what REALLY happened to da?), and obscured futures (what is with this rider and his turquoise dragon?)...the combination of known and unknown balance each other out to provide intrigue so it doesn't simply become a history, but carries on as an oh-so-entertaining-and-enchanting read that I simply could NOT put down!  I had to learn more about Duskya and Ruskya as well as their curious connection that confounds even the most world weary.  When the youngling was introduced with his mysterious healing abilities, I wanted to understand how it was even possible.  Once Carryl joins the group, I had a feeling her status as just a healer wouldn't last long, but watching it unfold was heartwarming.  Learning what REALLY happened in the past eye opening, but seeing just how precariously the future was perched was enough to stop your breath.

So, if you're ready for a highflying adventure filled to the brim with family, magic, dragons, riders, and good vs evil...this is the book for you!  Recommended for Young Adult Fantasy fans in their early teens and beyond; the content is clean and the journey is AMAZING.  What more can I say?

Welcome back to another day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Well, things sure do look different around here and while I'll be missing my "chef" for certain, I think it's safe to say I've cleaned things up enough to take the disclosure of "under construction" off the top of my site, don't you?  Anywho...today is INDEPENDENCE DAY!  The day we celebrate (US side, at least) our freedom with cookouts, family time, and firework displays that light up the night sky.  I, myself, had to work today...*le sigh*...but I can still here them "bursting in air" above us outside, so I hope that you and yours are celebrating it up tonight. 

Here, we're all about the books and today's late day post is a YA Paranormal release that, well...hasn't quite hit the virtual shelves at the moment, but it's coming, just like that zombie apocalypse everyone keeps talking about (just kidding...but maybe not when we're talking about THIS book).  Ready or not, prepare to utilize your flight or fight reflex as we take on today's ebook of choice...

Things only become worse when he discovers he’s immune to whatever makes a zombie a zombie. Fighting zombies was predictable. He knew what to expect. Fighting humans is volatile. They are malicious and treacherous. They won’t stop to get what they want, and Caleb has to figure out exactly what that is.

My first impression...curious, VERY curious.

I'm not a zombie fan, by any means, and the more I say that the more I look back and see that I've actually read a decent amount of zombie fiction at this point, but nevertheless, I stand by my "not a fan" claim....HOWEVER the approach in this one is rather interesting.  It takes us to a world not so far removed from our own that we wouldn't recognize it, and places us smack dab in the middle of life after a zombie apocalypse that was started by mankind.

*GASP*  shock  *WHOA*

That's right.  What started as something with good intentions quickly got away from those "in control" and blossomed into the monster that it is today.  Go figure.  Flash forward a bit and those in adulthood are few, while the workforce is filled in with the children that survived...and are still trying to.  What's that?  You thought it was all over?  Think again.  They're still trying to figure out how to eradicate the disease and possibly turn the zombies back into humans...albeit living and breathing ones, I'm not quite sure.  Anyway, our main man Caleb survived a whole host of gruesomeness and still lives with the storms it created within him, but the reasons behind his survival were chalked up to luck and skill...until now.  It seems there is more to him than meets the eye, but don't worry...he's still on someone's menu as he attempts to survive long enough to secure his own future as well as quite possibly the fate of the world.

All in all, it was a good read.  The writing was smooth, the story line was without holes, and it left you wanting more in the best way possible.  Now I will say that the whole BZ's and RBZ's thing is a little humorous (name wise at least if you know what it stands for) but while definitely a stretch of the imagination, they still stand squarely on their own two grossly sized feet.  Well done and bookmarks up to author Pembroke Sinclair!  If you're a YA Paranormal fan, love conspiracy theories (come true!), or simply have a hankering for zombie culture, this should be on your summer reading list!

Pembroke Sinclair is a literary jack of all trades, playing her hand at multiple genres. She has written an eclectic mix of fiction ranging from horror to sci-fi and even some westerns. Today, we're shining the light on an ebook title that came to my attention thanks to Pam at Aurora Publicity.  It's a Middle Grade Historical Fiction novel, but we're not talking ancient times...merely 60 some odd years ago.  Wow...okay, when I type that, it seems MUCH longer than in my head, but still, "historical" is interpreted differently by every reader.  Anywho, back to the title at hand. It's a curious read to say the least, but when have I ever REALLY said the least and left it at that...yeah, exactly.  Ladies and gents, cool cats and hipsters of today, join me as we discover today's ebook of choice...

It's a story that takes us back to the 1950's when the Beatniks were attempting to plot their own course through life away from "the man".  It was a time of unrest for many as people settled into the way of things post WWII and while tackling all the changes coming their way was fine and dandy, folks needed an outlet, a way to give voice to the masses.  That voice sought became what we know as Beat Poetry.  It was a way to share their observations, educations, and frustrations, artistically and nonviolently, while prompting the common man to rethink what he's come to accept as the norm.  A few of the bigger names during this movement included Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac...some of which make appearances within these very pages.  Speaking of those pages...

The history is great, the setting spot on, but the characters are what really drive this story to a spectacular finish.  Ruby is an absolute gem.  She's tougher than she seems, can think on her feet, and her heart beats truer than true.  She may not always understand the big picture at first glance, but she gets there in her own time with style to spare.  Ruby wants so badly to be one of the voices of her generation without even really knowing how it's done, but she doesn't let that stop her and in the end, she achieves more than she dared hope.  True, it's not a happily-ever-after the way she pictured, but it is true to the times, the tale, and herself as well as her family, which gives it all the greater impact.

In the end, I caught Ruby's beat like a bird does the winds of change.  The author does a great job of breathing life into her characters and it allowed Ruby's voice to come through loud and clear. Though hipster now, it was Beat back then, and while the style may not always appeal, the message transcends any generational gaps.  A must read for Middle Grade fans of all ages wanting a glimpse into our not-so-distant past as well as a way to feel that hum, that vibration in the air that moved so many to speak out, be heard, and affect the world around them.

Jenna Zark is a columnist, lyricist, playwright, and novelist. Her play A Body of Water was published by Dramatists Play Service and produced regionally after its debut at Circle Repertory Company in New York. Other plays were produced in the Twin Cities, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and St. Louis. As a former staff writer at Scholastic Choices magazine, Zark wrote extensively for middle school and junior high students. Columns, poetry, essays, and articles have been published in TC Jewfolk, Stoneboat literary magazine, Minnesota Bride and numerous other publications. Zark is also a member of a lyricist’s collective in the Twin Cities that performs at local cabarets. She’s still trying to figure out if it’s harder to write a play, a novel, or a song.
