So, recently I've been reading through a slew of ebooks...no, don't get excited, I haven't switched to the "e" team...and they've all been in one particular genre...Fantasy, or more specifically in this case, YOUNG ADULT Fantasy.  You know, the magical, mystical, wonder-filled worlds inhabited by other beings both past and present, and brimming with adventure!  Yes, THOSE works of fantasy, and today's title is no different.  In fact, it's the FIRST in a series (SIX BOOKS...why did no one TELL ME there were SIX BOOKS!) from this new-to-me author, and I must say...ME LIKEE! 😉 But I digress, far be it from me to twist your arm over any title, but nobody said anything about suggestive persuasion.  Ready a spot on your MUST READ list, here comes today's ebook of choice...

Though admittedly I've not read the series, I liken what I know of it (and saw in the film...don't judge me!) to the Eragon series.  There's the wiser, more world wise dragon rider tasked with teaching the next generation how to ride, care for, and bond with their dragons, as well as learn the finer points of protecting the townspeople, just in case.  Of course, there aren't any ACTUAL attacks to worry about.  I mean not at least for many winters...until now.  The introduction of twins Duskya and Ruskya along with the dragons that just happen to choose them seems to have turned the rider world on its wings.  They possess a natural ability that seems unnatural and one mysterious and vicious rider seems to know just why that is...and wants it for himself.  Imagine that... *smirk* ...of course, knowing and obtaining are two VERY different things and he's gonna have to get through some serious talent if he hopes to even get in range.  Of course, he IS pretty evil...so underhanded is essentially his middle name.

Dragons, dragon riders, dragon courage, mysterious riders from another colony, half revealed pasts (what REALLY happened to da?), and obscured futures (what is with this rider and his turquoise dragon?)...the combination of known and unknown balance each other out to provide intrigue so it doesn't simply become a history, but carries on as an oh-so-entertaining-and-enchanting read that I simply could NOT put down!  I had to learn more about Duskya and Ruskya as well as their curious connection that confounds even the most world weary.  When the youngling was introduced with his mysterious healing abilities, I wanted to understand how it was even possible.  Once Carryl joins the group, I had a feeling her status as just a healer wouldn't last long, but watching it unfold was heartwarming.  Learning what REALLY happened in the past eye opening, but seeing just how precariously the future was perched was enough to stop your breath.

So, if you're ready for a highflying adventure filled to the brim with family, magic, dragons, riders, and good vs evil...this is the book for you!  Recommended for Young Adult Fantasy fans in their early teens and beyond; the content is clean and the journey is AMAZING.  What more can I say?

Today, we're striking novella gold with a quickie read from a new-to-me-author I do believe you're going to REALLY get into.  It's a Supernatural Thriller that begs readers to check their own proverbial closets because you never know when that skeleton is going to come back to haunt you...or worse!  Ready or not, let's jump into today's book of choice...

The story itself is curious and twisted.  We have Angels that aren't quite as angelic as we've come to believe, people with hidden pasts that you would never suspect anything off-color of disappearing in VERY unusual (and painful!) ways, and the end of the world being a much more ACTUAL TIME than some distant perchance happening.  Yeah...like I said, TWISTED, but in an entirely GOOD way.  Well, not good like good, but good like interesting.  Follow me?  GOOD!  (^-^)  Have you really ever given consideration what the "end times" would be like?  Probably not outside of your Sunday sermons, but this one brings it front and center.  Some say the next time around, the world ends by fire...not my chosen way to go (I'm thinking in my sleep with no foreknowledge of it going to happen nor pain in the process of), but it might be preferable to what these so called Angels are bringing.  I'm telling you, they're asking, nay demanding a soul to justify its life...CREEPY...and how are you really suppose to answer that?  IS there a correct answer because their word seemed to be pretty final here.  *gulp*  At least until they meet someone that just might have them figured out...

Father Montgomery is an interesting man of the cloth.  What's that?  Ah, yes...he IS a priest in fact and being so makes him a man of God.  They are able to act as an instrument of Him here on earth, pardoning sins, bringing others into the flock, and spreading his Word.  They are without fault...or are they?  Everyone has a past...even a Father...some are just worse than others.  His indiscretions?  Sorry, can't be the one to reveal them; you'll have to read the story to gain insight into this noble man.  The truth of the matter is though that his past and the path he took following those events are what lead him to be where he is right now and despite it seeming like the utterly WRONG place, it's exactly where he needs to be...for his own sake and that of the world.

I admit, I was kept pretty much on the edge of my seat throughout the 128 epages...and that's harder to accomplish with me when reading an ebook.  I know, I know...you don't want to hear it, but you know what I'm getting at... ME + EBOOK = NOT-AS-HAPPY-AS-WITH-PAPER.  There, that's all I'll say on the matter.  Getting back to my point, the author manages to pull some theological threads into his story without stepping on any religious toes.  There's enough to draw the curious reader of a faith based background but not so much that it crosses over into a Christian Fiction title.  No, decidedly not a Christian Fiction title.  I found myself constantly curious about the connections between what was happening in the community we were based in as opposed to the little tidbits and news blips from abroad.  Were they connected?  How and WHY?  Did it have anything to do with the experiment?  Were scientists trying too hard to play God?  So many questions and so few answers, but just enough of the former are sated to make this a MUST READ for your afternoon reading adventure.

Today, we're shining the light on a title I read last month but in all the hubbub of Thanksgiving and what not, I've not had a moment to truly reflect on it and share my thoughts...until now.  It's a title that came to my attention from the author himself, and from the start, there was something about it that caught my attention.  I responded to the pitch, got something scheduled, and the rest is history, or rather TODAY.  ^-^  It's a work of Fiction

In my eyes, this is certainly a character driven story with the events surrounding them taking second fiddle.  That's not to say they weren't well crafted, historically accurate, or important, they were...it's just that the PEOPLE were more so.  It is with that affirmation of MY truth that I dive right into introducing our leads.









Raleigh led a decent life though the fact that he could never really own his feelings for Mona shaded him a bit for me.  I get it, to a slim degree...he was trying to be the cool guy and admitting their connection was anything other than friendship would have changed life for him.  He meant to do right, tried his hardest but sometimes the times got the better of him.  It wasn't just the times as in era either.  With the passage of time, he made choices along the way that would change his future more than he ever dreamed.  When he was saddled with Barbara, my heart broke for him.  He didn't really deserve that heartache and betrayal...no one really does...but he did gain something out of it as well.  Now on to his counterpart...


Mona was a very interesting character.  Seen as "feebleminded" most of her life, her opinion of herself was never very high (no thanks to her Aunt), but it didn't stop her from enjoying every minute with her whole heart.  Truth was, she fell in love with Raleigh from the very start and though the fire itself was put out that fateful night, the flames in her heart only smoldered waiting for the right moment to reignite.  I couldn't begin to imagine the way she was treated; I mean I guess I could from the story, but in reality, I would've had to hurt some people. *-*  What her "guardian" did to her was absolutely obscene.  To think, decisions like that could be made on her behalf just blows my mind.  People do get their comeuppance and those that deserved far better eventually into their own.







Raleigh and Mona...not a couple you ever imagine happening and while it never truly materializes on paper...it doesn't mean it isn't there.  That was half my initial issue with the ending.  Once the final words marched passed my eyes, I let out a resounding...WHAT?!  That's it!?!  You end it there!?! ...but after thinking about it for a bit, I realized that was really the whole point.  There are SO many possibilities in the story (and in life) and while some seem to know it from the start, it takes others time to get there.  Mona was the former, Raleigh the latter, but they both reached where they were meant to be in the end.


Overall, a story that stays with you long after the final page is turned (or clicked).  I myself was very impressed, much more so than I at first imagined I would be....don't you just love when that happens?  Recommended read for adult Fiction and Historical Fiction fans due to some content surrounding events that transpire.

About the author...

I was born in Portland, Oregon in 1951 and grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho. I’ve earned degrees from Stanford University and the University of Washington, and have worked—full– or, as currently, part–time—as a lawyer since 1976.

My interest in creative writing predates the start of my first novel, Beyond the Sand Creek Bridge (2012), which was thirty years in the making. At present, I’m pleased to be riding a robust wave of creative energy. It has been a long time coming, but it’s here now, and I feel blessed to have the time and capacity to make the most of it.

I have four children and six grandchildren. My wife, Rochelle Wyatt, is a talented Seattle-area actress. Since 2009, we have lived in a beautiful cabin-like home overlooking Lake Sammamish, fifteen miles east of Seattle in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leddy Harper had to use her imagination often as a child. She grew up the only girl in a house full of boys. At the age of fourteen, she decided to use that imagination and wrote her first book, and never stopped.

She often calls writing her therapy, using it as a way to deal with issues through the eyes of her characters.

She is now a mother of three girls, leaving her husband as the only man in a house full of females.

The decision to publish her first book was made as a way of showing her children to go after whatever it is they want to. Love what you do and do it well. Most importantly Leddy wanted to teach them what it means to overcome their fears.
