Once upon a time, there was a boy after my own heart.  He was a reader, as only a true reader can recognize another reader (no really...check out page 8...you'll see what I mean!), but not only by choice, but by circumstance.  You see, he lived vicariously through the pages all the great adventures that had been.  He was there by their sides as all the treasures persistently pursued were uncovered.  He followed along on every ill-fated quest, or successful expedition as those things available to conquer were...well, conquered.  Now, here he was in the Amazon on a family vacation...with no true adventures left in sight.  After all, they had all been had...hadn't they? 😉

You guys...this was SUCH A GREAT READ!

Seriously, I felt like I was strapping in for a "three hour tour" only to find out that it was SO MUCH MORE.  We're talking Disney's Jungle Cruise elevated exponentially to the next level of adventure!  We're speaking of a captain that would even give old Sparrow a run for his money (no really, he'd probably have him running after money because he's tricky like that...whether intentional or not!).  We're going on about an ADVENTURE with MR. ADVENTURE(son) himself, bursting at the seems with nautical wit, humorous hijinks, and downright dangerous stunts that while you're kissing the dry land you're walking on, you'll STILL be clutching the book and turning pages because you won't be able to put it down...and no it's not because I've glued your hand to the page, either.

Captain Kevin Adventureson is ridiculously memorable...and definitely not hurting in the ego department!  Handsome. Exciting. "Been everywhere, done everything, and looked better than everyone else doing it." Seriously, he's a RIOT whether he's sailing the high seas, scamming tourists out of their vacation funds, or tackling the Amazon's hottest taco.  Dani and Mike are beyond resourceful...a good thing too seeing as their captain is a bit non-traditional.  *ahem*  They have to fend for themselves and do a bit of growing up in order to survive this trip...and just how that all comes to pass is equally exciting!  The bad guys are full of surprises, and really, there's one surprise that is TOTALLY SURPRISING...and even some of the good guys are full of them too!  We'll just sum it up as being good at keeping you on toes.

In the end, it's not AFTen that I get to be this punny in a review...or at it's close! Take it from me (no, really...take it! ), you'll want to catch the WAVE on this massive SHIPWRECK in the making. Between the fab CREW, fantabulous SAILORS TALE, and the unexpected turns to the STARBOARD side, you'll be laughing, hooting, hollering, and generally causing a ruckus this side of the HIGH SEAS while reading an ADVENTURE(son) you won't soon forget!  There, how's that for some nautical wit?  😉

About the authors...

Scott Peterson (aka Scott David Peterson) is currently the Executive Producer and Showrunner of the upcoming Netflix animated series, "The Last Kids on Earth."

 Scott was nominated for a primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program for writing Nickelodeon’s “Escape from Cluster Prime” and for an episode of Disney's "Phineas and Ferb."

He has worked as a writer for Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon, among others, for the last decade. Most recently, Scott has been a story editor for Disney TV Animation on "Milo Murphy's Law," “Phineas and Ferb,” “Kick Buttowski,” “The Replacements,” and “Emperor’s New School.” He has also written for such series as “Brandy and Mr. Whiskers,” “Danny Phantom,” “The X’s,” “Robotboy,” “Tutenstein,” and “Pet Aliens.” Oh, and “The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries.” Remember that one?

Joshua Pruett is a Primetime Emmy Nominated writer and human-author-person who splits his time unevenly between Gallifrey and Los Angeles with his incredible Wife/High School Sweetheart/Knitter/Singer Amanda and their boy and girl-shaped children. He is currently living out a dream come true, writing dialogue for Weird Al Yankovic's mouth on Disney XD's MILO MURPHY'S LAW (2016).

This one has me reading with shades of The Sea Wolf, Moby Dick, The Perfect Storm, and those Discover Channel crabbing shows a few years back, floating through my mind...but in a good way!  A wild, exciting adventure upon the high seas, full of danger, hardships, and uncertainty... but also triumphs, self realizations, and hope. 

We know from the start that the Angie Piper is going down...hence the title...but though we know that for fact, the when and how are still up in the air, as is every little thing that will transpire in-between.  The crew is a memorable collection of personalities.  Straight from the port, there's friendly ribbing, bets, and letting loose before the work really begins, but there is also uncertainty and speculation as to the intelligence behind bringing on board a certain greenhorn.  Seriously, it may not have bothered Danny, but for the love of Pete, I was ready to come through the epage and take those macho muckups down to size.  They weren't even prepared to give him a chance to prove himself, which happened to be the only part that his "friend" really opened his mouth about.  I'm sorry, but Ed really had a lot to learn about friendship despite the years these two had been a duo.  He may have known how to talk to Danny and teach him, but that's only half (if that!) the duty of a true friend. Luckily for him, he's about to learn that lesson...the HARD way...and with terrible repercussions that may end any chance he has to be the better man he claims to want to be. 

In the end, it's definitely top pick for adventure seekers, both of the armchair and real life varieties, that puts you right there in the action, for better or worse.  Though a rough and tumble crew, the way they come together when all heck breaks loose, will steal your breath and stir your heart.  Danny is the unlikely hero in this group, but that heart of gold and innocent determination refused to be extinguished.  (Hooyah to you Danny!) So, strap on a life vest and prepare to be amazed as you climb aboard the ill-fated Angie Piper for a final voyage she, nor we, are likely to forget.

About the author...

Raised in southern California, Chris Riley moved to the Pacific Northwest for college, where he quickly grew accustomed to the colder climate. Since college, he has worked through a variety of careers, until becoming a school teacher for students with special needs. Ambition not yet quenched, he began an additional career in writing, and has had nominal success with the short form markets, before delving into the longer narrative.

Chris’ debut novel, THE SINKING OF THE ANGIE PIPER, is a coming-of-age story about an Alaskan crab fisherman who learns what it takes to be a man from his best friend with Down’s syndrome. Compared to as both “literate and heart-pounding,” the novel combines the elements of human survival, forgiveness, and tear-jerking triumph, against a backdrop of the harsh, Alaskan seas.

A little vague perhaps but it alludes to potential excitement, don't you think?  Well, I thought so at least.  Anywho, toting the merit or potential of a title you've not read is well and fine but instead of supposing about it, I do believe I'll let you hear it from the horse's....I mean author's own words.  Take it away Mr. Joyce!

My name is Andrew Joyce, and I write books for a living. Gina has been kind enough to allow me a little space on his blog to promote my new book, MOLLY LEE. The story is a female-driven account of a young naive girl’s journey into an independent, strong woman and all the trouble she gets into along the way.

Now you may possibly be asking yourself, What is a guy doing writing in a woman’s voice? And that’s a good question. I can only say that I did not start out to write about Molly; she just came to me one day and asked that I tell her story.

Perhaps I should start at the beginning. 

My first book was a 164,000-word historical novel. And in the publishing world, anything over 80,000 words for a first-time author is heresy. Or so I was told time and time again when I approached an agent for representation. After two years of research and writing, and a year of trying to secure the services of an agent, I got angry. To be told that my efforts were meaningless was somewhat demoralizing to say the least. I mean, those rejections were coming from people who had never even read my book.

“So you want an 80,000-word novel?” I said to no one in particular, unless you count my dog, because he was the only one around at the time. Consequently, I decided to show them City Slickers that I could write an 80,000-word novel!

I had just finished reading Mark Twain’s

Huckleberry Finn for the third time, and I started thinking about what ever happened to those boys, Tom and Huck. They must have grown up, but then what? So I sat down at my computer and banged out REDEMPTION: The Further Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer in two months; then sent out query letters to agents.

Less than a month later, the chairman of one of the biggest agencies in New York City emailed me that he loved the story. We signed a contract and it was off to the races, or so I thought. But then the real fun began: the serious editing. Seven months later, I gave birth to Huck and Tom as adults. And just for the record, the final word count is 79,914. The book went on to reach #1 status on Amazon twice, and the rest, as they say, is history.

But not quite.

My agent then wanted me to write a sequel, but I had other plans. I was in the middle of editing down my first novel (that had been rejected by 1,876,324 agents . . . or so it seemed) from 164,000 words to the present 142,000. However, he was insistent, so I started to think about it. Now, one thing you have to understand is that I tied up all the loose ends at the end of REDEMPTION, so there was no way that I could write a sequel. And that is when Molly asked me to tell her story. Molly was a character that we met briefly in the first chapter of REDEMPTION, and then she is not heard from again.

As I had wondered whatever became of Huck and Tom, I also wondered what Molly did when she found Huck gone.

I know this has been a long-winded set up, but I felt I had to tell the backstory. Now I can move on and tell you about Molly.

As stated earlier, Molly starts out as a naïve young girl. Over time she develops into a strong, independent woman. The change is gradual. Her strengths come from the adversities she encounters along the road that is her life.

With each setback, Molly follows that first rule she set against self-pity and simply moves on to make the best of whatever life throws her way. From working as a whore to owning a saloon, from going to prison to running a ranch, Molly plays to win with the cards she’s dealt. But she always keeps her humanity. She will kill to defend herself, and she has no problem killing to protect the weak and preyed upon. However, when a band of Indians (for instance) have been run off their land and have nowhere else to go, Molly allows them to live on her ranch, and in time they become extended family.

This is from a review on Amazon:

“A young female in nineteenth-century rural America would have needed courage, fortitude, and firm resolve to thrive in the best of circumstances. Molly Lee possesses all of these, along with an iron will and an inherent ability to read people accurately and respond accordingly.”

I reckon that about sums up Molly.

I would like to say that I wrote MOLLY LEE in one sitting and everything in it is my pure genius. But that would be a lie. I have three editors (two women and one guy). They kept me honest with regard to Molly. When I made her a little too hard, they would point out that she had to be softer or show more emotion in a particular scene.

I set out to write a book where every chapter ended with a cliffhanger. I wanted the reader to be forced to turn to the next chapter. And I pretty much accomplished that, but I also wrote a few chapters where Molly and my readers could catch their collective breath.

One last thing: Everything in MOLLY LEE is

historically correct from the languages of the Indians to the descriptions of the way people dressed, spoke, and lived. I spend as much time on research as I do writing my stories. Sometimes more.

It looks as though I’ve used up my allotted word count (self-imposed), so I reckon I’ll ride off into the sunset and rustle up a little vodka and cranberry juice (with extra lime).

Today, we're chasing away the end-of-weekend blues with a Children's Fiction selection that's set to hit shelves this week.  It comes to us via Greenwillow Books and is the first installment in a brand new series from first time author Nicholas Gannon.  If this is only the beginning, I can't WAIT to see what's in store for us in future installments!  But I digress, it might be a bit more helpful if I actually share the book that I am excited about before the actual excitement.  ^-^  Ladies and gents, explorers and adventurers of all ages, please join me in welcoming today's book of choice...

About the book...

Archer B. Helmsley certainly has THE DOLDRUMS. He has grown up in a house full of oddities and treasures collected by his famous explorer grandparents; a collection he wishes he could add to. But when Archer’s grandparents go missing on an iceberg, his mother—aware of his explorative “tendencies”—forbids him from leaving the house (except for school).

Yet Archer still longs for adventure. With his friends Adélaïde L. Belmont—who may have lost her leg in a crocodile attack—and Oliver J. Glub—who is always prepared for everything that could go wrong—Archer realizes what his first grand excursion should be: rescuing his grandparents from that iceberg in Antarctica.

 

And so together they make a plan. A plan to escape Archer’s home, to live a little, and to leave their eccentric town. It's a good plan. Well, it's not bad, anyway. Of course, nothing goes quite as they expect. But in the end, the truest adventure is friendship. And you don’t have to go all the way to Antarctica for that.

To me, it reads like a cross between A Series of Unfortunate Events and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (both of which are remarkable reads, so if you haven't sampled them and have not the foggiest notion of what I am referring to, feel free to educate yourself on them at your earliest convenience ^-^). 

 

 

 

The story itself is curious.  I mean, how else can you truly describe a story that introduces your lead character so simplistically and yet fully all at once?  That's what I thought.  Curious indeed.  Archer is a wonderful lad simply wishing to break out of the box created for him by his parents to not only live a life of adventure but rescue those that saw fit for him to dream of it...his grandparents.  The fact that they have been lost on an iceberg is no deterrent to him, in fact it allows the flames of hope to continue burning....and with good reason.  They ARE adventurers and explorers themselves with mad skills that range from living on the back of an elephant to assisting a sea captain in need so well that he saw fit to grace them with his eye (yeah, I'll let you ponder that, but it's not gruesome like it sounds).  How's a little (okay, HUGE) iceberg suppose to have taken them down?  According to The Doldrums Press, easily...but don't believe EVERYTHING you read.  Thus begins Archer's story, but it's certainly not how it ends. 

 

Character wise, we have a lovely mix that starts with our leading lad, continues with his sidekick chum Oliver, and marches forward with Adelaide.  Now, the middle was friends with the former not for adventure but companionship.  Despite the fact that he found Archer rather odd, he was one of the few that would speak to him and tolerate his eccentricities, and thus a friendship was born.  When push comes to shove though and the REAL quest is about to begin, his yellow belly may just prove too strong a pull...you'll just have to wait and see.  As for latter soul mentioned, she's a ballerina without a stage.  Put on the sidelines due to "mysterious circumstances" (of which we are privy but the same may not be so for her compadres), she's an open book on her here and now but the past is something she'd rather not get into.  She's certainly had a rough road for such a young lady but it hasn't put a damper on her spirit which is as feisty and vibrant as ever.  It makes for a very interesting addition to this little group of friends, sparking more forward motion than they probably would have achieved left to their own devices.  Suffice it to say, I enjoyed the lot of them...even those you'd rather not meet face to face (aka Mrs Murkley...mostly).

 

 

 

 

The author takes his time allowing us to get to know each of the characters with a section for Archer and Oliver, one for Adelaide, and then finally the trio that they now are.  The inclusion of artwork within its pages only adds to the majesty of the book's presentation.  Seriously, the illustrations are beautiful and the color palette chosen matches the tone of the story (something that will make more sense as you read).  It has elements of whimsy and seriousness, cause and effect, choice and consequence, with a healthy dose of adventure...just not in the way you might imagine.  Confused?  Don't be for it won't help your situation.  The only way out of this quandary is to READ IT, then things will become crystal clear.  Recommended read for adventure seekers of all experience levels.  If you have an active imagination, and love stories about the things that really matter, this is definitely a tale for you.
