Today is an EXTRA exciting day...and no, not merely because I posted something new on the site.  (Hardy-har-har. ^_^)  NO, it's EXTRA exciting because there are TWO posts hitting the blog and they have two things in common.  First, I've read the authors work before.  Second, I enjoyed what I read!  Good combination, right?  So, on to THIS post....

Excerpt

Iris lost herself in Falcon's arms, feeling the world drift away again as her lips melted against his stronger, larger ones. The warmth spreading through her body felt like electricity filling very part of her, pooling at the tips of her fingers where she touched his shoulders then traced along his arms. The tension that had worked its way up her back and through her own shoulders released as his hand brushed lightly down the length of her spine, sending sparks through every nerve.



"Please," she whispered softly, centimeters from his lips as they breathed in each other's warm breath. She felt herself lean towards him, this time not holding back as she moved his arm to her waist, making him wrap both arms around her fully. His secure hold on her was the only thing keeping her upright.



"Anything," he whispered into her ear a few moments later after she had caught her breath.



"Be the one beside me when I enter the masquerade. Be the one by my side when I change it all. I know I can do it on my own or with Nestor but...I don't want to. I want you both
there with me,” Iris said.



The look on Falcon's face, the light in his eyes, showed her the joy he found in her invitation. "I was waiting for you to ask. Waiting for you to want to need me, even if you never will. It would be my pleasure, Izzy. I will always be there for you. Nothing could pull me away." He didn't say the words but they still hung silently between them, the knowledge that anyone who tried to pull him away from her would die trying. She knew she should be afraid, but
somehow he was the only person she knew she could trust, the only one her heart was perfectly sure about, like a tether tied them together, connecting their lives.



"I do need you. Even if I don't, I still need you." She whispered and kissed him harder, forgetting the world outside their doors, ready to explore the man that the boy she had known had become. The man who felt like such a part of her now that she had accepted him. She didn't know what she’d do if she ever lost him. She had never felt a connection this powerful, this all
consuming.



"I love you." He whispered, his eyes gazing into hers, their intensity only pulling her
further into the joy of just being close to him, just letting herself forget the world she wanted so desperately to help, to change. "I want to do something for you."



"What is it?" Iris almost pulled back, not wanting to lose the moment between them but instead she leaned the side of her face against his chest so that she could hear his heart beating.



"I want to show you what it’s like to run without hesitation, without taking away the one part of running that makes it so magical - the freedom. I want to show you that freedom." He
bent and traced his fingers along the back of her legs. They buckled but he lifted her, taking it as an invitation.



She smiled and leaned against his chest. This time he wasn't carrying her because something was wrong. It was like when they were kids and he wanted to show her he was strong enough to support her, that he could be that person who would pick her up even if she hadn't fallen. He walked to the door and she turned the doorknob for him. They found Autumn in the hallway.



"Wanna go for a run?" Falcon asked Autumn, his voice a conspiratory whisper.



"Sure!" She said and smiled lightly when she realized what Falcon was planning. "Every girl should get to feel the aves inside of her come alive."



Iris smiled feeling like she had her team. They were the people she needed and wanted by her side. They were the ones who kept her human and kind, protecting her at all costs. Nestor was upstairs with Nathaniel preparing for his duties in their upcoming plans. The rest of her family was downstairs. As they jogged by, they passed Jarem on the way, heading up to meet Diana. "We’re going running, wanna come?" Falcon offered and Iris laughed.



"If you invite everyone we may as well all go." Iris giggled and smiled widely, looking forward to it, not caring who decided to come. Iris knew that no matter how people surrounded her and Falcon, somehow they were always alone. They were the only two people in on the secret. That was their unusual type of love. It would only grow with time and trust as long as it was never betrayed.



"Sure, why not." Jarem said and smiled. He opened the door to Diana's room and hollered, "We’re going running with Falcon, wanna come?"



"Absolutely!" They heard Diana yell back. She joined them even though she was wearing a short dress. Not bothering to change, she threw a pair of high-tops on with it.



As they jogged through the house David joined them, leaving the fort to Neal, Garah and Griffin so as not to disturb Nathaniel and Nestor. When they went out the door, Diana led them to the back of the house, going through the garden to a strange trail beyond it. "Is this the fairy trail?" Jarem asked. When Diana nodded, he smiled and looked at Iris. "It's perfect."



"Wooooo!" Diana shouted, crying out like a hawk soaring through the sky. Jarem and even Autumn joined in and Iris realized it was for her and Falcon, egging them on. Falcon set her on her feet and knelt down the way he once had to offer her a ride on his back. She blushed
feeling like that same little girl for one beautiful moment, attaching herself to his back and holding onto him tightly.



The bird calls got louder and louder until Falcon got ready and whispered, "You ready?"


"Yes." She whispered next to his ear and then looked straight ahead realizing, she really did need him. Falcon knew what she needed even before she did. As he started running, she shifted her weight and realized, she fit so well against his back, like they had been molded for just this moment, for him to give her the freedom that her body robbed her of. Suddenly her grudges against her body for being made the way it was disappeared as the wind whipped her hair away from her face. She arched her back ever so slightly to get the full effect and to keep her weight manageable for Falcon as he ran faster and faster. Her heart felt like it was soaring for the very first time. There was nothing like it, the faster he went the more amazing it felt. All she could feel was the earth around her and the link to her aves.



She couldn't help but giggle with glee as she watched Diana pass them, holding her arms out at her sides like wings. The wind was pushing her arms behind her, and her face was lifted toward the sunlight shining through the trees. Jarem sped to catch up with her and they started to race each other, getting competitive each time one of them would pass the other.



Autumn was at Falcon’s side as she called out, "Oh come on, go for it. She'll love it!"



"Faster!" Iris squealed like a little kid, the sheer joy of movement giving her a rush she had never felt before. As she leaned her face against Falcon's, she could feel that he was smiling as he gained speed. He wrapped his arms behind her, entwining his fingers at her back like he was stretching as his position formed a brace for her. She leaned into it and as he went faster and faster. She slowly let go of his shoulders and held her arms out at her sides like Diana. The sun
beat down on her face and arms. As she closed her eyes, she felt like she was flying, really and truly flying.

But it's been a long time since anyone who could call himself a wizard walked the world, and now that world is changing. Children in the city are falling ill; something sinister lurks in the forest. Oscar has long been content to stay in his small room, comforted in the knowledge that the magic that flows from the trees will keep his island safe. Now, even magic may not be enough to save it.

He's got no strings to hold him down and yet he still frets, frowns, and finds life among those living in the Barrows....HARD.  Whom are we speaking of?  Well, Oscar of course!  He's the magician's (Caleb's) hand...a step below apprentice...whose been tortured by one too many for his lack of social graces, inability to understand things we take for granted, and hard wired responses of honest truth when posed a question.  Does that make him any less of a "real boy"?  Hmm...good question.

The title evokes the classic story of a marionette maker and his pride and joy, magically brought to life by the Blue Fairy and set on a quest to become a real boy....but notice I said evokes as in brings to mind, for it's not a carbon copy in the least.  At it's very heart, it merely has some passing resemblance much like a fraternal twin; they are connected in ways you can't at first see, and yet entirely different.  Oscar is more here and now granted with problems and issues that a flesh and blood boy would certainly have to contend with and yet...something is not quite right.  We find out further along how this puzzle piece fits into the whole but trust me, you won't see it coming for the twists and turns....and MONSTER...hide it well.

The history of the Sparkling City, the Barrows, the plaguelands and beyond as well as the magic that coursed through its veins is viable, living through the page and able to be seen through the eyes of our young guides.  Power is a funny thing.  It can both make a person and break a person...it's all in the way it is wielded.  You'll see how powerful fear can be, how the chance to control things that should not be controlled can change not only a place but the the people within, and just how far a kind heart can take you even when you don't know the way yourself.

Oscar was an often misunderstood character whom I'm glad to have met.  He can teach a thing or two to many a reader not only through his adventures but his misadventures.  His cat friends were brave little furry souls that stood by him through thick and thin, offering comfort and solace when needed...as well as a helping paw.  Callie, the healer's apprentice, was much more than she seemed as well.  She was more graceful with people, more presentable and pleasant to glance upon, but...she too had shortcomings that plagued her young mind.  Just goes to show you that no one is perfect...no matter how much they try to be or even how much we WANT them to be.

So, how do I feel about this one?  Well, I feel pretty good actually.  I started the story thinking one thing, was pushed onto an entirely different path but wasn't left to waste away in the barren plaguelands as I could have been.  Instead, I was shown a world of the author's creation somewhat familar in ways and yet so much more.  In my mind, it's another success story...seeing how I thoroughly enjoyed her first work that was similarly tinged...and I think you will agree.  Recommended for middle grade readers and beyond.  If you're looking for a story infused with magic and a whole lot of heart, this title would do well to be on your wish list.

About the book...

Lila is a polite six-year-old girl who lives with her mama and papa in New York City. She has two cats, and would now like to have a dog–except dogs are not allowed in her apartment building. After thinking about it for awhile, Lila asks her parents if she can have an invisible dog. Her parents agree, and together they decide to name the dog Fluffy. On their way to the pet store to buy invisible supplies for the invisible dog, a black and white Aussie appears from around the corner and introduces himself to Lila, saying, “My name is Fluffy.”
In a series of fun adventures that follow, Fluffy introduces Lila and her family to the invisible people of Iceland, who live inside the boulders of Central Park and the cornerstones of New York City buildings. One day, the invisible people discover that the birthmark on Lila’s left forearm is the sign of their Elven Queen, and just as she turns seven, Lila is made a princess. Can anything be better than that?

What can I say that hasn't been said?  It's cute and it's sweet.  The writing makes it inviting to fans of the Children's Fiction genre both of the target age group and beyond.  Lila is an adorably sweet girl, courteous to everyone and everything, even when it comes to her choice in pets....however as we discover, her "choice" may not have been completely her own but a destiny she knew not of starting to unfold.  Once Fluffy is introduced, or rather introduces himself, we begin to see (well, I saw Fluffy, I don't know about all of you....*hrumpf*) just how EXTRA special she is and how things are certainly not what they seem.  What begins as an innocent desire, turns into a mini-fantasy adventure to let readers indulge their imaginations as well as the possibility of "what if" with two leads that will enchant you with their charm.

So, some pretty big stuff is going on even with it's simpler undertones, especially considering the lead is a SIX YEAR OLD.  Yep.  Sure is.  I even double checked to make sure I hadn't gotten my facts mixed up.  Lila is six going on seven and while I have no problem believing her age based on her thoughts, school experiences, and life in general, at times she seems to be written as much older.  Her decisions are more thought through.  Her consideration of others is much more informed.  Maybe it's just her inner princess peeking out...certainly a possibility.  Anywho, moving forward....I do have two other points to ponder.  First, let's talk cover....

There's no doubt, it's quite lovely.  The little girl and her poochie friend all set up for an afternoon tea....so cute!  Might I interject something though....while it illustrates the characters within, it doesn't really fit the story in my opinion.  Yes, I'll adore it sitting on my shelf, again it is very pretty, but the story has a little spark of adventure and personally, I think an illustrated cover (including some of the images within the story) might have created a bigger reach for audiences, one of those "must have this book" moments.  Just a thought...and while we're at it, one more.  (I promise, I'm almost done!)  As I previously mentioned, the writing style is inviting and I've no doubt audiences will adore it, it is after all somewhat Lemony Snicket in it's approach.  My only moment of grimace is that sometimes, just a few, it seems like it's trying TOO hard.  The descriptive, snarky style is fun but has its limits.  It is easy to go overboard and get lost in every little detail...for the most part though, we make it safely back to the other side.

In conclusion, a book to get little ones using their imagination early, middle readers introduced to a new world of possibility, and older readers a chance to marvel at the novelty of it all.  You'll fall in love with Lila and Fluffy (LOVE Fluffy!) as well as all the "invisible's" we meet along the way.  You'll wonder where the story will take you next as well as where you can meet your own invisible talking dog to call friend.  You'll smile and chuckle your way through the adventure and at book's end...still be curious to see what the author has in store for us next.  Recommended read for middle grade readers and beyond.

This is a little ray of sunshine in an otherwise monotone world.  We step into the pages with a young girl and her pup as she greets the world with a smile and her trusty yellow umbrella.  It makes grey skies blue.  It turns frowns upside down.  It makes the perfect accessory for any outing, outfit, or outlandish mood...all by itself.

It's a security blanket without the nap time draw.  It's a creative spark without a flame.  It's a positive outlook given a form everyone recognizes as something that protects us from the storm...as well as something that opens up a realm of possibilities when options seem limited.  The adventures the little girl has with her yellow umbrella will inspire many children to think outside the box...as well as some adults.  (^_^)

Throughout her adventures, you can't help but be captivated by the illustrations.  Simple yet powerful with details spared and to spare; each scene has something to share in its extraordinarily understated way.  But...the fun doesn't stop there.  Though storybooks are moved along by their pictorial contributions, the story in this one though apart from the action at times, allows you to float down the river, sail through the night sky and ride along with the little girl (and pup!) as they ride the trolley.  They narrate yet only just allowing room for your imagination to take care of the rest.  Perhaps my favorite scene of all is when her color choice is being explained...gotta say, I have to agree.  Yellow may not be everyone's color, but it definitely brings a smile to your face.

It starts with a trip to the movies with dear old Mom for a viewing Elizabeth and Janessa are less than happy to attend...yep, you guessed it, the equally loved and loathed Pride and Prejudice...continues with a search for a modern day Mr. Darcy, and finishes with...well, I can't exactly say as that would be ruining the surprise, but let's just sum it up as a journey worth the taking with a BIG reminder that dreams and fantasies are nice, but if the reality doesn't stack up, those blinders will fall of one day soon, hopefully not leaving you high and dry.  You feel for our leading ladies , are grateful that a chance was given to both romantic options, and finally see the hearts of many for the truths they naturally hide.

This is the story of Humpfree Camel and his quest to find his humps.  Once you get done laughing at that sentence, let me know...because while there is humor abounding within these pages, there is also a distinct message of JUST BE YOU because you are special, you are important, you are a one of a kind original...and in Humpfree's case, he really is.

He grows up knowing he's different but not in the "I'm-good-with-that" sorta way.  It makes him uncomfortable, so much so he embarks on a quest for his humps.  He looks everyone. High. Low. On top of...and below. He finds many a makeshift substitute and yet nothing feels meant to be. Down in the mouth and head hanging low, he's just about given up.. until "redemption" comes in the form of a snappily dressed explorer with a little food for thought to share.  The rest as they say is history. ..in the most smile inducing way possible.

Perhaps the coolest part of this little beauty outside of the AWESOME illustrations and ADORABLE story is the fact that it has a tie to real life. There is actually a "humpless" camel that has more recently been discovered, a fact readers are encouraged to investigate at story's end. Ms. Dweck includes a few fun facts to entice the curious thinker in you along with a warning to NEVER irritate a camel (*-*) should the occasion arrive. It's fun, it's informative; it's a beauty to behold and another reading treasure of Ms Dweck's creation I'm proud to say "been there, read that"...and highly recommend for all ages.

Welcome October...every SPOOKY one!

Hi guys!
Welcome back to a BOO-tiful edition of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers...the place where we host guests with the most, even when the subject is SPOOK-tacular!

That's right!  It's October!  Time for pumpkins.  Time for tricks and treats. Time for Fall fun ranging from falling leaves and family time to haunted houses and ghastly ghosts.  All this talk of Halloween-type escapades had me thinking of a childhood round we use to sing when I was little. Perhaps you've heard it...if so, sing along; if not,  welcome to the cool kids club (^-^).

Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?

Well, I do suppose it would be now don't you? But before you get too creeped out remember not all ghoats are exactly scary.  (Just don't tell THEM that.)  I mean from movies lore, there's Casper, whose name itself includes "Friendly Ghost", then you have...umm, well you have...huh.  Well, I'll be a ghostly apparition.  I'm failing miserably at drawing up any other friendly spectors, but perhaps today's featured title will float you in the right direction. Get ready, get set...BOO! Today's book of choice is....
