Today, we're celebrating the BOOK BIRTHDAY of the latest release in The Academy series from author Tessa Bailey via Avon Books.  It's a Contemporary Romance series with A LOT of punch (interpret that as smexy times), at least if this installment is any indicator, so definitely vying for a spot on the bookshelves of ADULT READERS ONLY.  Trust me though, even if you're not one for the "full treatment", the story is still worth pursuing.  So grab your party horns and don your hats, it's time to meet today's ebook of choice and book birthday celebrant...

About the book...
Is there a problem, Officer?
Jack Garrett isn’t a police officer yet, but there’s already an emergency. His new firearms instructor—the one who just dropped every jaw in the academy gym—is the same sexy Irish stranger Jack locked lips with last night. The Olympic gold medalist and expert markswoman is now officially off-limits, but Jack’s never cared much for rules . . .

Katie McCoy’s been cooped up in a shooting range for too long. A wild love affair is just what she needs to let loose, though she never imagined it would be with her smokin’ hot trainee. She cannot get involved with Jack—but a quick fling? Perfect. Falling hard for a charismatic recruit with an equal amount of sex appeal and secrets?

Bloody stupid.

Jack’s charmed the pants off plenty of women (literally), yet few have ever looked beyond his perfect surface. Until Katie. He’ll do anything to keep her in his life . . . except tell her about his past. But a tiny lie of omission never hurt anyone, right?

She's an Olympic medal winning sharpshooter with nary a notch on her social card.  He's a cadet with potential who chooses to use a different set of skills to make his personal life more interesting.  From backgrounds to goals, life choices to desires, they couldn't be more different than oil and water...and yet they have a way of exposing one another for who they really are.  They say the truth hurts and believe me these two are in for a world of pain, but the fact of the matter is they are SO MUCH BETTER for it in the end.

Here's the thing...I liked the characters (Jack, Katie, and all their friends), I was into the story (boy from the wrong side of the tracks meets girl from across the pond, both damaged in unseen ways, but struggling to be better versions of themselves while striving to conquer the obstacles that stand in their way), but the language and graphic scenes had me scrunching my face in distaste.  What can I say?  I prefer the sparks and steam as opposed to full on BAM!

Here's the other thing though...by book's end, I still would have waded through those things I wasn't fond of JUST to find out how it all came together because again, the STORY IS GOOD!  I love how the gorgeous Jack had a past that was less than wonderful (okay, not like liked, because really, so sad...but he had imperfections and not everything was handed to him which made the god-like-man more human).  Seeing him open up and grow as a person was tremendous.  I enjoyed seeing Katie find her way through tragedy while following the signs to her potential future (~tear~).  She brings out the best in him, making him want to be more than a pretty face, and doing things for other, while he brings out the woman in her, letting her find herself in more than just her career.  Their kisses alone could set the night on fire, so just imagine what the rest would do...*ahem*

In the end, a fan of the story, just not of the exposure.  But you know, to each their own!   If you like red hot romance with strong characters, a dash of innocence, and a storyline beneath it all, this is certainly a book for your wish list.  As for me, I might just have to keep my eye out for the next one in the series because honestly, I'm curious to see how the potential couple alluded to is going to survive each other...LOL!

About the author...

Tessa Bailey

New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans, and laptop, and drove cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend, and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband and daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.
