RRR presents... THE RAIDED HEART by Jennifer C. Wilson - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

HI there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today is a two post sort of day, so that means a bit more scrambling on the set up/typing side of things for moi, and a whole lot more bookish fun for all of you!  Sound good?  Great....let's DO THIS!  This post is all about a current Rachel's Random Resources tour circling the blogosphere featuring a Historical Fiction pick that gives me a slight feel of the life/times of early settlers and the like...but you be the judge.  Ready or not, here comes the title in the spotlight...

The Raided Heart
by
Jennifer C. Wilson

About the book....
Meg Mathers, the headstrong youngest sibling of a reiving family on the English-Scottish border, is determined to remain at her childhood home, caring for the land and village she’s grown up with. When an accident brings her a broken ankle and six weeks in the resentful company of ambitious and angry young reiver Will Hetherington, attraction starts to build. Both begin to realise they might have met their match, and the love of their lives, but 15th century border living is not that simple, as Meg soon finds herself betrothed to the weakling son of a tyrannical neighbour, Alexander Gray. When tragedy strikes, can Meg and Will find their way back to each other, and can Will finally take his own personal revenge on Gray?

Right from the start, the author placed me directly in the story.  I could feel the cold winds blowing in a long, desperate winter.  I could sense the mounting panic as supplies ran low and their trepidation at whether or not their loved ones would return as "saviors" or "sentencers".  I could hear the hoof beats as things became more unsettled, and the shiver of hope that ran among the villagers, traveled down my spine as well.  When things looked bleak, I held my breath.  When the tragedy of the heart that was the unexpected (sort of) betrothal of Meg to the wrong suitor came to pass, I couldn't stop my stomach from churning, despite knowing times were different then and battles were settled, stronger bonds made through the blending of families.  The potential for things to perhaps turn out all right in the end was palpable, even when it was merely a tiny glimmer in a darkening world.

Suffice it to say, it made an impression and though not my usual read (time period wise), I certainly found myself lost between the epages a time or two.  Oh and yeah, I've TOTALLY read another work by this author previously, and I remember being equally swept away (and that very title happens to be the one up for grabs in the giveaway)!  So, if you're a Historical Fiction fan that likes their stories to run more along the lines of adventures lived despite the harshness of the land/life, this one needs to be on your must read list STAT!

About the author....

Jennifer C. Wilson is a marine biologist by training, who developed an equal passion for history and historical fiction whilst stalking Mary, Queen of Scots on childhood holidays (she has since moved on to Richard III). Enrolling on an adult education workshop on her return to the north-east of England for work reignited her pastime of creative writing, and she has been filling notebooks ever since. In 2014, Jennifer won the Story Tyne short story competition, and has been working on a number of projects since, including co-hosting the North Tyneside Writers’ Circle. Her Kindred Spirits novels are published by Crooked Cat Books and her time-slip novella, The Last Plantagenet?, by Ocelot Press. She lives in North Tyneside, and is very proud of her approximately 2-inch sea view.
