About the book...

Inspired by a true story, Into the Thicket begins with the moment the author’s young son discovered an injured baby rabbit — an encounter that sparked a heartfelt journey of care and connection.

This tender picture book follows a boy and the rabbit he hopes to help, gently exploring themes of compassion, courage, love, and the bittersweet beauty of letting go. It invites young readers to develop empathy and a deeper appreciation for the natural world, showing how even the smallest acts of kindness can ripple through a great, big world.

Featuring stunning watercolor illustrations by acclaimed Ann Arbor artist John Megahan, Into the Thicket is a story families will return to again and again. A portion of all proceeds benefits wildlife rehabilitation and conservation.

This gorgeously illustrated and heart warming book shares the story of one little bunny in desperate need of help, and the little boy that not only noticed, but to the time and gathered the courage to get the help he needed.

Patrick and Ben were brothers, and like they tend to do, ragging on each other, and instilling unnecessary fears in the other is a part of their everyday world. When Patrick needs to get help for the injured baby bunny, those fears kick in because the fastest way to get to assistance was by going INTO THE THICKET. Could he do it? After all, Ben said their were goblins and all other manner of creatures in their waiting to gobble him up. I mean, a bunny would be an additional tasty morsel, and like tangling the proverbial carrot in front of a bunny. But Patrick took one look at that little soul in his hands, and knew he had to do for the bunny's sake. I totally wanted to give him a hug for that maneuver, but I digress. The story doesn't end once the Thicket does...

Reaching the other side is about getting one step closer to conquering his fear, but also one step closer to saving the little kit. Thankfully, his neighbour happens to run a wildlife rescue, and is well versed in assisting little critters that get into situations they can't get out of themselves, but it's not all about her, and she readily admitted that. It's a team effort, and the newest honorary member of that team is Patrick because of his kind heart, his responsible nature, and his desire to see this little one healthy again. I'm not gonna lie, it's touch and go, but I will say this take on the story has a happy ending that not only sees the bunny hop another day, but reminds us that while our help may be needed, wild animals should be returned to the wilds whenever possible.

A lovingly told tale that I've no doubt will inspire a new generation of animal helpers of all ages, this is a book I can see in both home and school libraries as both a story to share, and a source of information. When taken with the beautiful illustrations, it certainly leaves its footprints on the heart, from the gorgeous full color scenes to the whimsically placed wording encouraging you to explore each page to its fullest. A great read for the small to the tall, and a story that I hope you'll check out for yourself and those you care for!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gail Kuhnlein has been writing stories since she was young. Her first self-published picture book, How Happy Is a Lark?, made her as happy as a, well you know. She’s just as excited about her new picture book, Into the Thicket.

Gail majored in journalism and public relations at Michigan State University. She worked in the field for over 30 years, most recently at the University of Michigan’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. People she met at UM were instrumental in publishing her picture books, a long-awaited dream come true.

After surviving multiple life-threatening complications following heart valve surgery in 2022, including several weeks in an induced coma, Gail considers every day as “bonus time.” She savors life with her husband, Tim, just outside Ann Arbor, Michigan. They adore their two adult sons, Davey and Trevor, and bunk with the sweetest kitties in the galaxy.

AWARENESS TOUR: Jane Escapes to the Jungle of Individuality by Jennifer Nestor, Illustrated by Victoria Mikki - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Hello, hello!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.  Today, I'm pleased as punch to welcome an AWARENESS TOUR currently making the rounds through the blogosphere with The Children's Book Review.  It stars a lovely little lady exploring her world just as she was intended.  Ladies and gents, readers of all ages, let's get between the epages of today's book of choice...

About the book...
 This heartfelt adventure follows a young girl named Jane as she tries to navigate the challenge of feeling different in her own skin while experiencing bullying at school. Though she is soft-spoken and quirky on the outside, she struggles on the inside—desperately wanting to belong. Escaping from an uncomfortable moment on the school bus, Jane has a vivid daydream where she enters the Jungle of Individuality: a place filled with animals who all have unique characteristics, just like herself. As she embarks on an incredible journey of self-discovery with some new friends, she quickly realizes her individuality is something she should embrace while also learning self-compassion and being brave when things get tough.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've all had moments of self doubt, times when all we simply wanted to do was fit in and disappear into the masses.  It doesn't matter if we're five years old, or fifty-five years old, it can get to us just the same.  Here, our spritely little leading lady, Jane, is struggling with those same feelings, and her brilliant mother, who loves her dearly, kindly reminds her that she is STRONG, and her differences simply make her beautiful.  She encourages her to embrace what makes her stand out because, really, there's only one you, so why would you want to be anyone else?  On her bus ride to school, her imagination takes her into the Jungle of Individuality, where she gets a better look at what differences can be, and how wildly AMAZING they truly are.  Her animal friends once again bring to life this valuable lesson, in wonderfully illustrated splendor if I do say so myself, that is great for wee readers just getting started in life, as well as older readers that simply need a boost of confidence to be their own brilliantly beautiful and unique selves.
So go ahead...fly your flag, do your dance, speak your peace, slay your day...as long as you do it your way, you can't go wrong!  Remember, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON IN THE WORLD IS SOMEONE WHO IS TRULY THEMSELVES.  It's not about a certain standard, or a bar that must be hit, but about living your life as your truest self, and gathering those friends and family that accept you just the way you are (and vice versa!).  A fabulous addition to any classroom or home library, and a story that will be reached for time and time again.
About the book...
At thirty-six, Susan Sinclair has it all. She's just been promoted to Senior Vice President of Mobile Banking at her firm, a prestigious position bringing fresh creative challenges and a hefty salary increase. Like the shiny new BMW in the driveway of the Silicon Valley home she shares with her husband, Matt, and their two beautiful boys, Susan exudes confidence and style.
Yet despite her success in juggling the roles of wife, mother, and businesswoman, Susan struggles with a secret dissatisfaction. Matt's work in cutting-edge computer research pays less than her job, and with each advance in her career, he has grown more distant. But Matt refuses to admit there is a problem, and Susan forces herself to play along, determined to give her boys the close-knit family life she never had.
Then she meets her new boss, Reese Kirkpatrick. Working and traveling together, she and Reese become a crackerjack team, but little by little, pleasure mixes with business. For the first time in a long time—maybe ever—Susan feels seen and appreciated for who she is. Certain she would never allow their friendship to cross the line, Susan lets herself stray dangerously close to the edge.
A moment of weakness changes everything. Now, unable to stomach the façade her marriage has become yet unwilling to decimate her family by moving forward with Reese, Susan faces a choice that could cost her everything—including her children . . . but possibly bring her more than she can dream.
Praise for Degrees of Love:
"Slabach crafts a relatable, heartbreakingly real story that will no doubt resonate with those at a similar station in life: women who love their families yet yearn for just a little more—to feel wanted rather than needed, to feel passion rather than complacency. In engaging prose and through skillful storytelling, Slabach captivates with an all-too-familiar story that raises questions with no easy answers."
- Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)
"This does not read like a debut author’s book. Slabach shows herself to be adept at portraying the complex emotions of the human condition. Her characters live and breathe on the page in a way that every author strives for, but few actually manage. Susan’s struggles ring true, and the way she handles everything makes her a very likable and relatable character."
- Sarah Perry, San Francisco Book Review, 5 Stars
"Profound, heart wrenching and very emotional, it is hard to believe that Degrees of Love is a debut novel by Lisa Slabach. This is one of the best novels I have read this year."
- Rabia Tanveer, Readers' Favorite
