In a Village by the Sea by Muon Van

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're diving into a Picture Book selection via JKS Communications and Creston Books.  It is unique in the path it takes to relay a story that so many have lived while making it accessible to even the youngest of readers on some level.  So in pre-celebratory fashion for the upcoming Vietnamese Family Day (June 28th), I give you today's book of choice...

About the book...
Written in a spare, lyrical style using fresh, evocative
imagery, this richly illustrated picture book is about
longing for the comforts of home while braving the
adventures and perils of the wide world.

The perfect book for teaching about diverse cultures
and lifestyles, children will delight in this beautiful
story which pays homage to the vanishing fishing
culture in Vietnam, honors courage and sacrifice, and
celebrates hearth and home.

Everything said above is certainly true but it's one thing to read the description and an something else entirely to experience it.

The story itself is told with very few words.  In fact, if you're above the target age group, I guarantee that you'll be scratching your head upon initially finishing the read.  Why?  Well, because that's when we tend to over think things instead of taking them for their face value.  The story is as simple as it's presented but it's also fueled by a heartfelt desire to share what the author's family and others went through every day in order to provide for their loved ones.  Being fisherman of the sea can be a wonderful occupation and it preserves traditions worth continuing, however it is often fraught with danger, disaster, and despair...and not just for those riding the waves.  Each time a boat leaves, it is not the fishermen alone that travel its decks, but the hearts and souls of those loved ones awaiting their return home.

Here those loved ones are depicted within each scene as they go about their daily lives awaiting the return of the boats.  It shows how everyone and everything is connected down to the smallest of the small, in this case the cricket painting the picture of the boat riding the waves that we were originally greeted with at the start.  It's curious to see how everything adds up and to recognize different things within each picture from the one prior.  I especially loved the inclusion of the dog.  What can I say?  I'm a pet person...but the entire package as a whole does wonders to convey the hopes, and dreams of a culture trying to preserve its traditions.

Recommended read for the young and young at heart.

Life Lessons from a Four-Legged Friend: Lola and Tattletale Zeke by Maria Goldman

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, I bid you to SIT and STAY because the title in the spotlight is going to make you want to BEG for more.  Don't worry, there IS more where this title came from as it's actually part of a growing series starring one ADORABLE fur-baby set on sharing little life lessons with her adoring fans.  Ladies and gents, feel free to turn a time or two to find your most comfortable position and prepare yourself for today's book of choice...

In this sequel to Lola Goes to Work (which I have not read but looks JUST as sweet!), Lola is a pup on a mission...to deal with her little brother Zeke.  Now, I know what your thinking, how does she have to "deal" with him?  Well you see, he has this incredibly bad habit of being a tattletale (hence the book's title) and it's not until the tables are turned on him by one tricky black kitty that he truly understands how his actions have affected his kid sister.  The next opportunity to tattle presents itself and Zeke...is there with a kind lick and a comforting paw.  Lesson learned!

Dog lover or not, I can't imagine how anyone could read this little gem and not fall in love with this pair.  Beyond the cuteness factor (because let's face it, these little Yorkies are ADORBS!), the humorous situations they get into will bring a smile to your face and the lessons imparted will carry it straight to your heart.  Though the words are limited, they marry well with the pictures so that even the youngest readers have something to cling to while the oldest among us revel in the same enjoyment.  If you have any doubts about how endearing this little pup is, check out the video starring the author and this wonderful little therapy dog below...

...need I say more?

Taste Testing Tuesdays...LITERALLY!: The Case of the Missing Carrot Cake by Robin Newman

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're approaching Taste Testing Tuesdays from a more literal angle.  That's right!  Instead of just sampling a book (which is of course MORE than enough fun), we're going to dive into a book that is not only a fun read but a tasty one too!  Are you game?  Then grab your best sleuthing costume and prepare to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!  Today's book of choice is...

A Wilcox & Griswold Mystery

About the book...
Captain Griswold and Detective Wilcox are two hard-boiled police mice and MFIs—Missing Food Investigators. When Miss Rabbit’s carrot cake goes missing the day before her big party, Griswold and Wilcox must investigate a farm full of fun, colorful suspects—and it will take smarts (and a delicious dose of humor) to crack the case.

Introducing the MFI...short for Missing Food Investigators.  Namely, Wilcox and Griswold, but enough with the niceties.  We're only here for the facts.

Fact #1:  Miss Rabbit's carrot cake is missing.
This causes great alarm in the rabbit household and with good reason!  It's suppose to be one tasty cake!

Fact #2:  She placed it within easy reach of pretty much EVERYONE on the farm.
Miss Rabbit didn't earn any brownie points here for keeping the cake safe, but she never imagined someone on her farm would be devious enough to take it!

Fact #3:  There's many eyewitnesses that have seen some funny business recently.
How funny the business is depends on the sharer of the story but let's just say that the owl and the pig have got some inside information.

Fact #4:  There's only one way in the rabbit hole and one way out.
An interesting thing to assess, but not an easy thing to figure out.  An inside job?  Someone aiding and the sticky fingered filchers?

Fact #5:  The MFI always get their man...um, woman...um, critter?
They are the ones to call in times of crisis...and when baked goods are missing, it's time to bring out the big guns.

In case you couldn't tell, I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this one!  From the exterior presentation to the internal illustrations, the who-dun-it story to the final reveal, there's something to keep you curious and turning pages whether you're tall, small, or somewhere in-between.  The characters may be animals but they've personalities to boot, easily distinguishing themselves from each other.  My favorite, aside from the MFI agents, would have to be Hot Dog.  How can you NOT love someone that's in the man's best friend category and can cook too!  Story wise, it's short enough for young readers just starting out to have fun with just a little help, while older readers will get a kick out of the overall layout and development.  I can honestly see this one fitting in well as a read aloud choice for classrooms as well as a fun way to while away a summer afternoon.

Recommended read for First Chapter fans young and young at heart with an eye for mystery and a taste for just desserts!  Oh and for that extra tasty tie in to today's post, at book's end you can find a recipe to make your very own carrot cake!  Now how's THAT for a delicious way to carry the fun right off the page...
