Once upon a time, I read the first book in this series...and I was ripped apart.  The danger and uncertainty, the violence and heart stopping moments, the times you didn't know how they could carry on and yet they still managed to...all pieced together, it made for one heck of a story.  

This follow up is no slacker either.  From page one, you're thrown right back into the thick of things, so if you needed a refresher, or chose not to read the first one for one reason or another, you won't be lost; in fact, I was having a bit of a deja vu moment when I first started reading this one BECAUSE it plops you right back in the closing scenes of the first.  From there, you're on your own, or rather you're riding out the story between the two sisters and the very different, and yet only just, trajectory their life paths have taken.  While they both felt they had lost the other, the truth of the matter couldn't have been any more different.  They both made choices given the circumstances they were in, and for better or worse, they have to live with the consequences.  Can the bond of sisterhood heal the wounds inflicted by war?  Is there any way for a lost soul to return to the beautiful life they once lived when the landscape has changed so much?

Step into the pages of history for a story you won't soon forget filled with characters you'll want to remember.  It's dark, and violent at times, but such are the results of war.  The important thing to remember is that victory is never out of reach as long as one still has HOPE.

Right from the start, you could feel the connection between Eve and Justine.  They were sisters through and through, no matter what anyone might say.  They picked at each other, played with each other, cared for one another, and as they grew up, despite their interests veering in different directions, they still made time for one another, and could always count on the other to have their back.  One such time this came into play was the start of a nightmare for both girls...and although it could have surely ended then and there, their desire to live, their desire to protect each other and their family was so great that the unspeakable became the endurable, for the sake of family.

My heart was ripped open from that very moment things progressed so darkly, so violently.  If I could have hugged these two girls through the pages, I would have...and if I could have put an end to their suffering, you bet I wouldn't have hesitated there either.  I'm not a violent person, but surely keeping evil from spreading like the poison it is allows a little bit of leeway?  But I digress...Eve had Justine, and while she took on the heavy role inadvertently handed to her that would get heavier as the years passed, it didn't mean that Eve's journey was any less difficult.  Different hardships, different choices, but in their heart of hearts they still felt the same....family mattered.  They weren't disposable, but the greater good mattered.  Whether it be keeping family safe, protecting a new life, shielding an old one providing aid, or turning a loved one against you to keep them away from harm, it all boiled down it family bonds, and the love shared between them...something the enemy truly knew nothing about.

A great pick for adult readers of Historical Fiction who don't mind becoming emotionally attached to a story and/or its characters...I know I sure don't!  While this book doesn't tie things up nice and neat by story's end, it does give satisfaction throughout, and promises more still to come.

Another highly emotional, evocative, and memorable work from author Jina Bacarr.  I had the pleasure of being introduced to her writing while on another Rachel's Random Resources tour late last year, and the book (The Lost Girl in Paris) really stuck with me.  It wasn't just the story, or the genre, but the way it made you feel, the way it made you believe, the way it made you think long about things long after the final turn of the page.  Whether those things were situations that happened to the characters, or the real life counterparts that inspired their stories, it stayed with you like a newfound friend.  This story was no different...

Right from the start, we form a bond with both Rachel and Kay. They come from entirely different worlds, but their goals are the same...freedom.  Freedom to be who they are without ridicule.  Freedom to be with whomever they wish to be with, and create their own circle of love with family, blood or chosen, and friends near and dear.  But at the smallest level with the biggest impact, they want the freedom to simply LIVE.  Both are on the radar of the evil sweeping through their countries for separate reasons, but both will be caught up in the nightmare that was our world's history, thanks to an individual who believed their own ideals were the only ones that mattered and imparted, nay impressed that upon everyone in their surrounding, no matter the cost.  The thing is...even if it takes time we don't believe we have, good will triumph over evil.  Where there's a will, there's a way, and these ladies are severely underestimated.  I don't mean in a burst of superhero power type of way, but in the simple fact that they know what's right, and what's wrong.  They know they and everyone else suffering under their iron fist, deserve so much better...and they won't stand still and let that suffering be for naught.

It's a moving story, you won't be able to look away from, with characters you'll remember long after the final page.  If you're a Historical Fiction fan, or have one in your life, you should definitely take note!
