Dreams.
Glimpses of the lives and adventures we wish to lead that fill our heads as we sleep, and leave us come morning...or must they?

This sweet story filled with colorful images and bursting with imagination reminds us that dreams are not something to let fade into oblivion, but treasures to hold on to.  Whether it be an actual gold doubloon from a pirate voyage, some sifting sands from the Egyptian dunes, or a bolt from a mysterious spacecraft journey, the dreams we hold dear, and the moments or memories from them, are special.  However we choose to keep hold of them, from bits in a jar to journals, is the important part and unique to ourselves.  It doesn't matter what the pieces or writing mean to someone else, so long as they help us keep the stars in our eyes, and those dreams in our hearts.

All in all, it was a lovely rhyming tale for the whole family at story time or bedtime fit to awaken the dreamer in all of us.  So, where will YOUR dreams take you?

LIZZIE'S DREAM JOURNAL by Charlie King - REVIEW!

Hi guys and gals!
Welcome back to another bookish day here at Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Once upon a time, there was a girl. She was a reader, through and through, letting the stories she climbed between the pages of carry her away to lands unknown, times unfamiliar, and adventures beyond her wildest dreams. This same girl would share her adventures so that fellow readers could experience a glimpse of her journey, and be tantalized to embark on one of their own. Then it happened...one day she came upon a title that, while intriguing, wasn’t quite making the connection she was use to enjoying between the written world and herself, and the book was put aside for another time.

You see, fair readers, while not every book is for every person (no matter how much we would like them to be), the right book can still come along at the wrong moment, and catch you off guard. Whether it be your mood, change in season, work life, personal life, or something completely random, there are wrong and right moments to pick up a particular title. So, yes, while I was to read and share this one once-upon-a-year-or-so-passed, now was the right moment (...and much thanks to the author for their patience and gentle nudge towards this title once again).  Without further ado, let me get to the title at hand, so that you can be off on your own adventures! Prepare to step into a story within a story as we explore between the pages of...

About the book…
After the death of her father, Lizzie Barnes’ life takes an interesting turn when her mum brings home a journal.

Lizzie decides to use the journal to write short stories involving her beloved teddy bear Rodford and his arch-enemy Dr Ofdor, a villainous grizzly bear.

She soon notices it is no ordinary journal as people around her begin to have dreams based around her stories.

When Lizzie begins to experience the dreams for herself, she finds that as the creator, the rules of the journal can work against her.

Lizzie, with the help of Rodford and a rat named Ridgeley, must explore the different worlds while facing the dangers she created, including Dr Ofdor, to free herself from the workings of the journal.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This read around, I was able to fall right into the story. I could feel the loss Lizzie and her family experienced. I could understand the fall from hero status that happened with someone she loved, and the confusion as to how it could possibly be true. I was worried about her mental and emotional well-being as she navigated these unknown waters even more alone as she pushed people away in an effort to find her footing. I was so grateful when she started writing again because that outlet to express herself and explore her inner thoughts was something so enriching to her soul.
The adventure portion really begins when her creations take on a life of their own. I was as astonished as she to read, see, and hear what was happening, but ever so curious as to the why, and how of it all. I admit, I didn’t take too kindly to some of her characters, Dr Ofdor being a given because HELLO villain, but Rodford was a surprise. Yes, Rodford...her trusty teddy bear friend come to “life”...I just had an odd feeling about him, which was justified to a degree, but I’ll let you figure all that out on your own. The one “person” I had no qualms about was Ridgeley...in life and in dreams. In life, his presence was guiding, as he tried to step in and come to Lizzie’s aid against the bullies without causing her more trouble...and yet his story’s end was rather peculiar to me. I couldn’t justify what happened in order for it to settle in my mind. In dreams, Ridgeley the rat is a spur of the moment character that loves to pop up in the nick of time, but I never had a moments hesitation about him. His little ratty heart seemed pure, honest, and loyal...something he unfortunately ends up proving time and again as the adventures grow rather dangerous!
All in all, it was a story that showed loss affects everyone in different ways, bullying is never something to be simply accepted, and life can get brighter even in the darkest of times. The ending for Lizzie and her family felt true to heart, and it brought a smile to my face (and a tear to my eye) to see the return of one of her own beloved characters.
About the author...
My name is Charlie King. I am an author from Croydon, England. My first books, The Lyons Orphanage followed by The Lyons Legacy are self-published while Lizzie's Dream Journal has been published by CAAB Publishing. There has been positive feedback on both books which is a great vindication for myself in regards to writing.
I always considered writing to be a hobby no matter the content. That is why I like to use this site for my own personal blog where I discuss topics like sport, film and TV, society and observations of an author's life as well as write satirical articles to bring a lighter side to my writing.
I have had an interest in English and writing ever since I was young and it has stuck with me throughout my education. I have a BA Hons in Journalism with English Language from the University of Portsmouth. When I finished university, I found that Journalism was no longer for me but I still loved to write so instead I wrote in my spare time.
The thought of writing a book crossed my mind many times over the years; I even tried to write a book a long time ago around the age of ten/eleven but it was terrible and lucky not seen by any eyes other than my own. The thought of that book put me off from thinking I could write a decent book. However, with time and the right idea, the writing improved but there is always room for improvement
I enjoy the balance of writing and creating stories with living in the real world, working as a legal assistant in a law firm.
I will continue to write no matter how many people read it. Writing is and always has been my passion.
About the book...
This is the story of Nicky Hanniky, a young poet who gets taken to fairy land and has so many interesting adventures she forgets to be sad about her Grandma’s death. Featuring gracious fairies, singing gnomes, and galloping unicorns, this fairy tale is suitable for kids aged 10 to infinity, including grown-ups who wish to revisit fairy land, and romp once again in the forests of friendship and dreams that never die.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"'Never too old to have an imagination,' Grandma Vee would say...." (pg 7)
...yes, I would have to agree.

This is the story of one little girl's adventures through the magical realm of fairy land, but how and why she ended up there are not nearly as cheery.  You see, she's had a terrible pain inflicted on her by life that's not only affected her spirit, but her very dreams.  All that was within reach, all that was possible, has dulled to a lighter shade of gray, with no hope in sight of pulling out of the doldrums she'd landed in.  Though not normally something to be that afraid of, after all everyone is entitled to their period of mourning, Nicky happens to be spending the summer at camp...a very special camp.  How is it special?  Well you see, it's the place her Grandmother use to come every year, a place that sparked many stories shared from generation to generation about fairies, pixies, unicorns, and dragons.  Of course, it was all written off as the fantastic imagination of someone wishing only to delight and entertain her family, but what if it was something more.  What if they weren't stories but actual adventures?  What if the dangers alluded to in them were just as alive today as they were back then?  What if one moment you're swimming with a newfound friend and the next your being drug to the depths by a creature you wouldn't even imagine in your darkest nightmares?  What if is about to become more than just a supposition...

I must say, the flights of fancy and wonder that abounds throughout the story were definitely a blast.  Can you imagine bouncing on clouds, sliding on rainbows, or exploring the fairy gardens?  How about a unicorn sighting, meeting a gnome, and frolicking in wind that plays with your hair (not tangles but styles)? Yes please...BUT, the darker aspects like the Drowner and the Harpy, you can keep.  *-*  Seriously, they are pretty foul creatures and we haven't even spoken of the dark magic that uses these two for it's own devious purposes!  Let's just say there's a balance in fairy land and without Anika guarding that fine line, it may crash and burn before any fun is had.  Nicky's take on all that is transpiring is quite grown up for her age, yet her reactions feel right in step with the guidance she has received in life.  Her grandmother sounds like she was a blast and it was heartbreaking to watch her struggle with the loss.  I was glad for her making the acquaintance of Anika, despite the circumstances being anything but ideal, and her time in fairy land was as wonderful as gazing at a rainbow...which I now wish I could slide down as well!

Overall, I enjoyed my time in fairy land and meeting all the creatures of lore. Favorites among them, if forced to choose, would have to be Umka, for her cheery spirit and desire to see the best in all, and Anika, for her desire to assist those in need, protect the innocent, and treat others fairly.  The only hang up I had was in regards to the length of the novel.  Originally, it was intended to be a series, but after some rethinking, reworking, and revising, the author decided to remake it as a standalone.  I do have to wonder though if the author's additional efforts on expanding the tale this way were wise.  We're talking a jump from 56K to 86K in word count, equating to 32 new chapters, and some bits felt like they fleshed out a bit too much.  Truth be told, the parts she shared that were cut would have made for other fun adventures in this magical realm, and I think we might have gotten to spend more time with Anika as well as Nicky, deepening that connection for them and us. So, fair readers, there's a question for you to ponder and perhaps respond to.

Recommended read for Children's Fiction fans that enjoy the sweetness of youth, the magic of fairies, and the power of dreams.

Max and Marla by Alexandra Boiger

Max and Marla is an adorable read from start to finish.  The moment my eyes lit on the cover, I knew I was in for something magical.

No, really!  I'm not overstating about this book or its merry brethren. There's just something about this particular genre that captures your imagination like no other.  It sets your mind reeling in so many directions from the simplest combination of words or beautifully complex illustrations.  Things you may have never pondered come to light while those ideas you've ruminated about on and off over time finally reach a stage of full development.  I'd like to believe that the reason for this magic is as simple as the freedom these books give us to interpret, explore, and change our worlds...and whose to say it isn't?  You can't tell me that you haven't had your melted by or a smile grow from ear to ear after reading a storybook at some point or another.  It brings out the kid in all of us and that's something we should never let go.  Back to the book at hand...

The story is simple yet true.  Dreams are not achieved lying down and life is much better with a friend by your side through thick and thin.  Yes, the words certainly have a shine of their own, a fact I won't discount in the least, but for me, the illustrations had my heart from the start.  I thought I recognized the style of the artwork and upon looking into the author's previous works, I did.  (She's the creative mind behind the art in the Tallulah series!)  That being said, even if I hadn't seen the style before, I would have fallen in love with these two.  Max and Marla are equally adorable as they help each other reach their sledding goals and when the going gets tough, they...pull together even more because THAT'S what friends do!  It was heartwarming to see them work as a team to get the sled back in tip top shape, even if one of them tuckered out before the job was completely done.  When they were preparing for the day, the process of getting all bundled up for the weather had me in smiles for miles as little Marla's was wound up to her eyes in a scarf and Max wrapped his own to match.  Their trips through the winter snow were beautifully represented with backgrounds that easily place you by their side as the wind whips and the snow flies. ~shiver~

In the end, the overall message is clear...one should never give up on your dreams, no matter how big or small THEY or YOU might be.  Bookmarks up to the author on her first dual role endeavor.  I can't wait to see what she has in store for us in the future.  Recommended for readers of all ages, shapes, sizes, and species...after all, what would little Marla say if we excluded her woodland friends?
